I had fun but I would love to see some change at this rink. I grew up very spoiled by the ice rink that was in my small town in Wyoming. It was seasonal but it was free to skate there because of local donors. There were always multiple staff who skated around the rink to make sure everyone was safe and guided people around those who had fallen or were creating unsafe situations for all the skaters. The figure skaters only practiced in the middle of the rink that had cones around it to prevent any public members from confusion and entering that space. You were asked to follow the direction of the skating and not go against the flow. There was a mandatory break halfway to clear the ice. This rink is a far cry from that. Skating is honestly a hazard here! I had to check in mid skate to see if I was still in public skate because there were so many figure skaters on the rink doing whatever they wanted. Skating wrong ways, blocking the path, zig zagging between skaters, all the things figure skaters do.I had a few almost run ins myself. I don't understand why public skate can't be a fun time to skate around and around without worrying if you're going to have a head on collision with the figure skater. I felt really frustrated because this wasn't the first time that I've come here and had this happen. Can there be a designated time for the figure skaters to practice? I get it.. share the ice but when it's a literal free for all it's hard to predict where to skate and stay safe. I'm familiar with how to stop safely but for newbies this is really unsafe. I want to take my nephews here but is there a time when it's truly a public skate? read more

This is a great facility! The ice quality is excellent, and the newly freshly painted colors to match the Winterhawks give the arena a sharp look. The facility is well set up with great amenities, including large locker rooms, a nice beer garden, and a convenient snack shop. It's a true hub for ice sports, hosting adult and kids league hockey and figure skating, plus open skating sessions with both skate and skating helper rentals available. The vibe here is definitely improving, and I'm really looking forward to the upstairs bar and restaurant that is reportedly coming soon! A cool, reliable spot for everything ice-related. read more

Sherwood Ice Arena is our closest skating rink. The staff is pleasant, the ice is cold. My daughter has been doing lessons for the winter session and she's loving it. I think the lessons are pretty affordable but I think a 50 minute lesson would be better than 30 minutes. They barely get enough time with the 30 minutes. I like it here, but honestly, the costs are HIGH. $20 for open skate?!? Really? Then $7 for those skate along things?! That's a LOT!!! Maybe add time or bring costs down...just a suggestion!! read more

This rink used to be a fantastic place to skate -- friendly, well-run, and welcoming. There was a kind, polite staff member who always made customers feel valued. Unfortunately, things have gone downhill since the new ownership took over. The schedule changes frequently, often without any advance notice. We visited the rink for the public session on 7/13/2025 after checking the schedule on your website around 10 AM that same morning. Based on the posted times, we made the trip expecting to skate, only to arrive and be informed that the session had been moved to 1:15 PM without any notice. We weren't alone; many others had shown up, equally confused and frustrated. As a long-time customer, it's disappointing to witness the decline. What was once a thriving community is now struggling, and customer service has reached an all-time low. The rink seems more focused on collecting payments than delivering on its promises. Ice time can be canceled or taken away without warning, and there's little regard for the commitments families and skaters have made. It's no surprise that the number of skaters has dropped significantly. This is no longer the place to grow your skills or be inspired by a strong skating community. What was once a vibrant and supportive environment is now unrecognizable. As of September 1, 2025, they no longer offer free public sessions for those enrolled in Learn to Skate. These kids are now only allowed to skate twice a week, as included in the Learn to Skate package. It used to include unlimited free public sessions. I'm sure that at most other places, public sessions are free for them to help kids practice, and decide whether they love skating enough to pursue it at a competitive level. Sadly, it doesn't seem like the new owner is willing to support these kids--instead, the focus appears to be on money and keeping them in Learn to Skate. If the current attitude toward customer service continues, I'm not sure how much longer this rink will survive and what is the future of new generations will be. I sincerely hope they reconsider their approach -- both for the sake of their skaters and the future of the rink. read more

If you're looking for a cool place to do some ice-skating, maybe take a date or just get out of the house for a fun activity, then this place is trash. If you are a serious competitive skater and are looking to work on your advanced skills, you'd probably dig this place. I am the former and I thought this place was absolute trash. With rental it costs $25 which is a bit steep. I had to change my skates 3 times because every pair they gave me were so dull that I kept slipping on the ice. And before you get on me about not owning my own skates, I live in California and so I didn't have room for them in my luggage. When I finally gave up on getting a pair of decently sharp skates and resorted to just enjoying it the best I could, there were two very arrogant and pompous kids skating around doing triple axles, hockey stops, and generally just treating it like it was their own personal ice rink without any respect to the others who are skating. Even they had a team logo on the back of their shirts and the coach of the team was not even approachable because she was too "busy working." The rules on the website are 21 in number and are very clear and explicit yet most of the people who seem like regulars at this place were in constant violation of the rules. Specifically rules 3, 7 & 8: 3. Always skate in a counter-clockwise direction around the ice surface unless instructed otherwise. 7. Excessive speed, racing, horseplay, and games of tag are not permitted. 8. Figure skating maneuvers are not permitted when there are 50 or more skaters on the ice. The employees were not willing to give a refund despite this and their solution was to just yell at the figure skaters. Rule 20 states to skate at your own risk, but that assumes that the other 21 rules would be enforced. This place is a lawsuit waiting to happen. read more

Hubby has been playing hockey here for 5 years on an adult league. They do offer open skate, learn to skate classes, hockey leagues and figure skating as well as birthday parties. The ice arena does have a beer garden that is open during all adult league games. I wish the snack bar was open at those times as well. read more

Ice rinks are very difficult to come across nowadays- there is the Sherwood Ice Arena, and the Beaverton one where the Winterhawks practice. There is of course the Lloyd Center rink, but it's tiny and meant more for children. The Sherwood rink, though, is full size and offers hockey leagues and open skating. It was $25 for the open skate session which comes with rentals- if you bring your own skates, it is the same price, which is peculiar and I am not exactly sure why they do that. They also do not offer a season pass which is a bit disappointing, as I would love to come on a weekly basis to become a more proficient skater. The rink itself though is very well taken care of, and they have a pro shop and a very, very small bar which sells Labatt Blue! Lots of seating for games, and even a very tiny arcade/toy machine area. What I also thought was interesting is that there are several businesses located inside of the building, though I am not sure if any of them are still in business (including a toy store.) I am actually thinking of buying my own skates and coming back on a regular basis, as it's good exercise and something I quite enjoy. read more

I've been a figure skater for about 5 years, but retired competitively a while back and want to keep my skills up. In my time in the skating community, I've heard nothing but good things about Sherwood. Since I was visiting Oregon, I decided to drive close to 2 hours from Eugene to Portland to check out the rink. Pretty big waste of gas money to be honest. Walking into the rink, the guy at the front wasn't the most receptive "receptionist" I've met, which is fine. The problem is that I was turned away because I didn't have a coach to accompany me which I thought was weird, considering every other skating rink I've visited allows guests on freestyle. I left the rink back to my car, and looked on the website's Freestyle guidelines. Surely enough, nothing on the website said anything about requiring a coach on the ice for figure skaters to attend the session. I decided to head back inside to ask to be safe, and ended up waiting around 10-15 minutes with no one at the front desk. I had ended up going over to the Pro-Shop next door to ask and see if they had any information, they didn't which is okay since they could be an independent shop. I had left to go back inside again, which was now about 20 minutes past the session I had hoped to skate. Another guy helped me at the front, which he was super kind and helpful and did in fact let me know that figure skaters were allowed on the ice whether or not they had a coach on the ice. He had even offered to give me a discounted price for the next time I came in because of the long wait, which was very kind of him. I had also learned that the prior "receptionist" was in fact the janitor that had to cover for him while he took care of other things. My issue here isn't the wait, it's the fact that I was given the wrong information and subsequently had my time and money wasted on my trip here. As someone who has worked in customer service, it's very upsetting when an employee has the gall to lie to my face and give me false information. I appreciate the help of the guy who helped me after though, his customer service and help alone is the only reason I could think of giving this place higher than a 1 star rating. I do not plan to return to this rink in the future, as the negligence displayed by the one staff member was unprofessional and highly irresponsible. read more

New ownership took over in 2020. Unfortunately, they do not honor punch cards purchased before the transition. Moreover, they raised the price of free skate to at least $15, including rentals. There is no discount if you own your own skates (as I do). The last time I went for free skate, the ice was all rough and choppy by the end. It seemed as if they did not Zamboni it halfway through the session as they used to. They did at least put in new benches with cubbies underneath in the lobby area. read more

While I love supporting skating, ice and roller, the support needs to go both ways. Charging $25 for a session is obscene. Plus no discount on price if you own your own skates. What a scam. Those of us with skates are paying an included fee whether or not we use the service or not. You would have more goodwill if the price was lowered for everyone. My partner had never been ice skating so I thought it would be fun to take him. The staff members were all very nice. I've only been ice skating once about 15 years ago so didn't know how this would go for me. Skates are different from anything I'd used before, but my partner was able to help me secure them. They weren't very comfortable but I don't blame them for that. They need to update their locker system. Quarters? Seriously? I laughed because I felt like I was a couple decades back in time. No worries, we just ran my purse back out to the car. The place was pretty crowded and tweens are not exactly a considerate bunch, so they just kind of get in the way, every step of the way. I realized very quickly this was not an activity for me and got off the ice. It was really dark in there, but not sure better lighting would have helped me any. My partner spent more time on the ice and really enjoyed it. I was surprised by the limited open skate hours, but I'm sure they know what works to make money. Even if I enjoyed skating it was just too crowded for me. Didn't feel like this is a good environment to learn how to skate. I'm glad I took him though because now he's at least tried it. read more

Our hockey family is sadden by the news that this facility might be closing permanently. We just relocated from Tacoma to Colorado and we spent many holidays and weekends at this facility. Truly a top notch rink and one of the better ones we visited over the six years that our family has been involved in hockey. We pray that the owner can find a solution and keep this rink open for the local hockey players, figure skaters and others. There is always been a shortage of ice rinks and losing one at the caliber of Sherwood is a bitter pill to shallow. Youth athletes on ice need more rinks like Sherwood not less despite their referees biasness (kidding...lol). I want but will not make this political. Be ready for nostalgia! This place is great fun- a throwback when you first walk in, but one of the cleaner rinks I've been in. Very friendly staff, never really had to wait in line for much, and as a former competitive skater, the ice is wonderful. Seriously! I was shocked that the public ice-skating prices have gone up so much, actually doubled! The last time we went it was only like $12.50 per person, because I remember it being very affordable previously. I understand that they had to gain back some ground from being closed with the pandemic. But this will make it unaffordable for me to take my kids back even though they would like to go back again soon. We have such good memories of this place, taking friends to skate and doing a birthday party there... I'm so disappointed that it's so expensive now! I hope the prices go back down at some point! Not bad of a skating place, probably cheaper compared to the skating rink at Lloyd center which is a bit overpriced for me, skate fee was 9 dollars and skate rentals were 3 dollars, so it wasn't too bad. They have public use hours so I'd recommend that you check them on the website first before coming here, if you come a bit early, it might be less crowded and it will usually build up in crow over time. This used to be great and friendly place to skate for both public skater and regular figure skaters who spends almost everyday practicing. There are so many advanced skaters at this rink and it is starting to bring recognition locally, regionally and even nationally. However, management has progressively become more hostile and rigid with so many new rules that has nothing to do with providing safe and pleasant environment for these regular skaters. It seems like it's all about profit and nothing more. As soon as Lloyd center closed its rink, pricing of ice time went up significantly as well, almost doubled on certain passes. I would not recommend this rink for skaters who wants to become figure skater! Portland area need a new rink for sure. read more

Friday night so it's good for the kids to it might make a little more money if they had a broader selection of food for the concessions and it would be nice if the check in process was a little faster on Friday nights. Be sure to bring quarters if you want to use the lockers! They cost 50 cents each, and only take coins. The fellow skaters are nice and considerate, but the employees could improve in this area. Our 6 and 8 year olds love to skate now...This was not always the case. At first they were a bit cautious and were not use to "falling" so often albeit they are adventurous. The instructors take every precaution to teach proper technique to increase the likelihood that students remain upright. Within a few weeks the girls were actually skating! Now they cannot wait until Saturday classes roll around. The oldest is now taking private lessons weekly and loves her "coach" Alyssa who is also the Director of Skating. She epitomizes patience and care for each student she coaches and it shows in all of their faces when she greets them. Here is the thing. The girls have learned to "fall" and get back up. Their balance and their confidence has grown as well, Moreover, they have met some "new" friends along the way and "earned" their own skates. They still continue to fall but with much more grace now. read more

My kids started skating here 12 year ago and we have spent many hours at the rink. New owners now and the place has gone to hell. Jacked the open skating price to $25 per person. it's now cheaper to go to the movies. Wish the old owners still owned It. Us to be a nice family friendly place. My children take lessons and public skate here all the time. This is the cleanest facility in Portland. The staff is great and know my family by name. Friday Night Disco Skate is great. Mostly middle school age kids, my younger skaters (5,6, &10) feel right at home and comfortable. If your looking for some hockey time, they have a variety of options. My girlfriend is an avid ice skater and we've tried all of the rinks around the area, but this is hands down our favorite. The ice here is always well maintained and the staff are helpful and friendly. We also very much enjoy the late night public sessions where there are lights and good music. I also chose Sherwood as the place to propose to my girlfriend. I emailed Michael and he was extremely helpful in getting things set up. I arrived and everything went exactly according to plan. All of the staff came out afterward and congratulated us. They all really made our experience magical and we will remember that day for the rest of our lives. read more

Open skate is usually a great time and the ice arena is a wonderful facility. The staff, however, leaves much to be desired. They were not very friendly when we checked out our skates. On the ice, there was a "guard" out the whole time, but she was just chatting and skating with her friend the whole time we were there (the last hour of open skate). She ignored a group of three teens who were skating back and forth, going the wrong direction from the designated flow and nearly running into people for at least half an hour. In the last ten minutes, I approached this guard and asked her if skating against the flow was against the rules, and she said it was. I asked her why she had ignored the group of teens mentioned above and she couldn't give me an answer. I watched her skate by this group twice and say nothing before we decided to leave. read more

Sherwood keeps their rink cleaner than our other local rink. While the place gets trashed during public session, it is cleaned shortly after and ready for hockey in the evening. Staff is young but competent and friendly. Plenty of parking and has skate shop attached which is owned by two WONDERFUL men. The ice is nicely cut but can take a beating after the Hawks skate on it. Locker rooms are cleaner than most and have showers. I've never tried the rental skates. read more

My first visit 6/14/2013 The lighting in the skate area was dark and dangerous. No ambient lighting. Viewing areas were chained off. And your 1 guard for both sessions of open skate left the rink on enough occasions that I alerted the lobby staff. Dayna, who identified himself as the manager, and 2 staffers informed me that it is stated on the website that Friday nights are disco nights and therefore the house lights are left dark. I can't find this info on your site. Dayna also assured me that my concerns were of no consequence , citing multiple times that SIR has been operating for years without incident. The first guard of the evening, left the ice unattended several times to socialize with the DJ, hug and visit with other guests . The second guard of the night left the ice so much that Dayna could not find her. Blocking fire exits in a dark and unsafe environment is not something your manager should happly defend. Dayna failed as a leader and representative of the faility on my visit and needs to really be retrained. Since this complaint, I have received 2 emails from Michael apologizing and offering some explanation and proposed the solutions. read more

We had a pass for one admission for four and the jerk at the front desk took it upon himself to argue it was but one get three free. It clearly said "one admission for four"... after they made us feel like we were ripping them off I decided to shamefully pay and leave it alone. Even my son made a comment about he guy.
