Sherwood Ice Arena is our closest skating rink. The staff is pleasant, the ice is cold. My daughter has been doing lessons for the winter session and she's loving it. I think the lessons are pretty affordable but I think a 50 minute lesson would be better than 30 minutes. They barely get enough time with the 30 minutes. I like it here, but honestly, the costs are HIGH. $20 for open skate?!? Really? Then $7 for those skate along things?! That's a LOT!!! Maybe add time or bring costs down...just a suggestion!!

Hubby has been playing hockey here for 5 years on an adult league. They do offer open skate, learn to skate classes, hockey leagues and figure skating as well as birthday parties. The ice arena does have a beer garden that is open during all adult league games. I wish the snack bar was open at those times as well.

Not nearly enough tables for the amounts of people here. And have now spent 20 minutes in line at the concession stand.

If you're here for the sport, the ice is always fantastic; consistently solid and well-maintained, which is clearly why the Winterhawks use it as their practice facility. However, the rest of the facility definitely shows its age. The stands are nice enough, though they are located on the far side from the entrance, making for a bit of a trek if you're carrying gear. The lobby isn't huge, and the locker rooms are a tight squeeze, especially if you have a full-roster adult hockey team trying to gear up at once. On the positive side, you can tell they are making an effort to modernize. The lobby, locker rooms, and bathrooms have been renovated, which is a huge improvement over how they used to be. The staff is also very friendly and helpful, whether you're there for a tournament or just a public skate. It's a classic, "old school" rink that has its quirks but remains a reliable staple for the local hockey community.

The Zamboni was on the ice when we got there (about 10am), but despite the website saying open skate was 10:15-12:15, the throngs weren't allowed until 10:30. Hopefully they will extend until 12:30. Anyway my daughter is excited to start lessons even though they don't start until after the new year.

Well, it's not a huge seasonal event like the Holiday Ice Rink Union Square in San Francisco and it's probably only one-fourth the size of The Rink at Rockefeller Center, but it's the Winter Village at Orenco Station Plaza! Yippeee!!!! OK, so first off, I'm new to the area but was told about this event happens every December. I didn't think much of it, until I started seeing them construct the ice rink. Then I knew something special was happening. But before I get into more details about skating and Winter Village, I just wanted to disclose that most of my information is primarily from their website versus what I've seen and experienced. Now onto the details: ~ When is it? Well, Winter Village opened last November 29th and will end January 5th, 2020. You basically get about five weeks of fun! And I'm actually somewhat surprised that no one has written up a review for this by now. ~ Main feature? Well it's the ICE RINK of course! A small one that's only about 115 feet long and 26 feet wide. It is outdoor, but covered by a huge white tent. With all the rain as of recent, it's actually good that the ice is covered and protected. The rink capacity can hold up to 70 skaters during a session. You do have to sign a waiver prior to skating, and sessions are about 90 minutes each. You can find their skating calendar and session pricing here: https://www.hillsboro-oregon.gov/home/showdocument?id=24060 ~ In general, prices with skate rentals are: Adults $13 Children (ages 4-11) $10 Children under 3 FREE! Want a discount? Bring your own skates and get $2 off. Or military and First Responders (and family members) get $1 off. ~ Features I've seen: Kids skating in special strollers. Cool winter decor and colorful lighting everywhere. I've seen the rink reserved, closed during some sessions for private events. So yes, you can rent the entire place all for yourself if you need to plan a private party. A great idea if you plan to have a season ending get together with coworkers. I've definitely seen it busier on weekends versus weekdays, so plan accordingly. ~ What I didn't expect from the village? The Winter Market on Sundays (10-3pm). Yes, a tiny farmers market with about 8 vendors selling things from home-made chocolates, specialty soaps, some flowers, a pie guy, a glass blowing vendor, I think I even saw a booth with veggies, a bakery booth with pastries, and a small band of local musicians playing Christmas songs. I thought it was just cool just seeing the community come together, regardless of how cold conditions have been lately. Well, there you have it! I would've given five-stars, but honestly I was sort of expecting more when you call something a "village". Maybe it hasn't snowed enough yet. Or maybe I was expecting it to be busier everyday around the area, but the good thing is, it's not. It is next to the MAX station, but really no heavy foot traffic. Support your locals folks, take your family out for some cheap skating fun, and happy holidays!

She has been skating for about 7 years total. We had heard good things about the program at Lloyd and decided to give it a try even though we live less than 10 minutes from the Sherwood rink. I'm so glad we did! The value you get at Lloyd can't be beat. If you happen to miss a class it's easy to pick up another class as a make up plus you can attend Open skate for free and get a punch card to bring a friend to Open skate a few times each session. Freestyles are also less expensive than other rinks in the areas. If you have done a learn to skate program there are some more advanced classes you can take like Choreo & Moves. The coaching staff is awesome, knowledgeable and patient. They go above and beyond to make students feel welcome, safe and included. (Special shout-out to Lydia!) Lloyd Center is also great for folks just wanting to skate for fun. Much of the day is available as Open skate and there are in and out privileges for the day. That means you can skate, pop off to grab lunch or shop and then skate again. It's a great little outing to do with friends or family.

It included the skates. It was particularly busy that day but manageable. You can rent a locker for $5. After touring the gyms I came away with the impression that Stafford was by far the best gym in the area. The staff is superb and the gym and equipment are clean. Beginning during the end stages of COVID restrictions, it was so nice to experience outdoor swimming, the hot tub, and social time with other members. Swimming is my main experience at the club so here is what you should know: * Six lane outdoor salt water pool that is open year round (I've done laps in the snow, sleet, and hail). * You can reserve four of the six lanes and it is very competitive to get times, especially during the warm weather months when you are competing for space with the swim team, swim lessons, and aqua aerobics classes. * The other two lanes are left open for first come first serve usage and swimmers are encouraged to share. * The outdoor hot tub is for 14+ over. I have only taken one yoga class at the club and all classes have you reserve your spot. If you cancel less than 12 hours in advance or are a no show, you are charged a $10 fee. Personally, I don't mind since the reservation system makes me accountable and if I don't have a reservation, I'm less likely to go workout. The club is a nice mix of serious athletes (I'm surrounded by masters swimmers and triathletes), retirees, and families. Prior to my membership, my teenage son was a member for two years and loved the weight room, sauna, and steam room. The club as been open for awhile and is definitely showing its age and is need of some maintenance upgrades in the pool area. That being said, I have been very happy with my membership here and the personal feel, literally being greet by name when entering and exiting, and the wonderful customer service. This club is very different from the large national chains, so to each their own. Definitely recommend a trial membership at this club as well as others in the area to see which is the best fit for you. [1] I am currently re-watching this classic sitcom and while not aging well in the post Me Too era, still good for a lot of laughs.
