A beautiful state park located at the top of the Door County peninsula on the Lake Michigan side. It wasn't too busy for a Saturday morning. Very cool shaded trails along the coastline. Also some great places to sit (on the rocks) it's crazy the difference of temp from the solo parking lot to the beach area. This is one of the smaller state parks in reference of driving around cause it's a short drive from the ranger station to the main parking lot. Very beautiful!

Beautiful park with majestic views and white sand. We tried seeing the northern lights but with all the smoke we missed them but we enjoyed the trails and peaceful nature around us for the evening.

What a great spot to take a hike! I think this park is underrated because it doesn't have traditional camping. There are 16 hike-in campsites with pit toilets nearby. I don't do pit toilets, so this is a big nope for me, unfortunately. The hiking, however, is great. There are 26 miles of hiking, and on our most recent visit, we managed about 10, by hiking in three different spots. We started out on the Newport trail and strayed off onto the Sand Cove Duck Bay trail. This portion was not clearly marked, and we often wondered if we were even on a trail, until we finally saw some signs confirming that all was good. We took the Newport trail until is met up with the Rowleys Bay trail, and circled back towards the trail head. This, alone, was almost a 5 mile hike. Next, we drove to a different part of the park and hiked the Sugarbush trail, which was another 1.3 miles. Our final visit was to the far north end of the park, where we hiked the Hotz trail, another almost 3 miles. The Sugarbush trail is at the end of a dead end road, and it feels like you shouldn't be there, because there is a house just off the road. However, there is a clearly designated gravel parking lot with a trail map, so you know you're in the right spot. The Hotz trail is also at the end of a dead end road, however, there is a small park with a parking lot located there, as well. We decided to have a little picnic, then hike the trail. There is a cool stone arch at one entrance to the trail, and the others just exit out onto the road. We've hiked here several times before, but for some reason, we never strayed away from the Fern and Lynd Point trails. This is a big mistake! Get out and explore more of what this park offers....you won't be disappointed! 45/2022

Our favorite Wisconsin state park for hiking! The north half from lot 1 is almost 7 miles round trip!'nn

    Trails are well marked.

Thi is a nice well maintained park. The trails are well groomed and marked. We hiked the Newport loop 3.8 miles. The path was mostly shaded. There are several walk in camp sites along the trail. Bring mosquito spray, you'll need it.

Great place for a Fall hike with trails of different difficulty levels and distances. Nice views of the Shoreline too where you can hike a trail loop that is near the water and gear the waves rolling in. Pet friendly with dogs on a leash required. It was more crowded this past October weekend than we imagined it would be so we kept our masks on much of the hike. Convenient parking here too.

DO NOT MISS! Newport is the first state park in Wisconsin designated by IDA as an International Dark Sky Park, one of just 48 parks in the world to earn the distinction. (Check out this link for more info on this) https://www.darksky.org/newport-state-park-designated-wisconsins-first-international-dark-sky-park/ We are city-folk and normally only get to see the brightest stars. To see the night sky from this park is AMAZING Go during the day to drive through the park and walk to the night viewing area. Then come back at night to view the stars. Be sure to speak with the WI DNR park ranger for more information.

This is a great park to get away from some of the hustle and bustle of motorized transportation of all types. There are hiking trails of all levels of difficulty in the park, with some of the more scenic trails tending toward the rugged. This is not a car camping park - you must backpack, bike, or cart your gear into the sites. The advantage of this is that the sites are mostly spread out. You definitely get more privacy and solitude. The main trails that lead to all the sites are good enough that you can use a bike, cart, or wagon to wheel your gear in. Each cluster of sites has a pit toilet, and each site has a fire ring with grill grate and one or two benches. There are also food storage boxes to keep the raccoons and other critters away from your food. There are good drinking fountains with spigots to fill your water containers at each parking lot. The staff seemed courteous and friendly, which is not always a given at some state parks. Lastly, the beach is pretty nice and is a perfect place to cool off in the cold water on a hot summer day.

Newport park is an excellent place for day hiking in door county. There's a small beach close to parking overlooking Lake Michigan. From that point, there are several trails you can follow, ranging from 2 to 7 miles. The trails are flat, which it makes them easily enjoyable for everyone. A couple downsides: 1) There are massive numbers of mosquitoes in the summer. Come prepared. 2) the boundaries are not clearly marked between the trail and campsites. 3) Apart from the beach, I could not find so many scenic areas along the trail. Despite all that, I could never give a national park less than four stars because this land is so dear to my heart.

We hiked Lynd Point/Fern loop and enjoyed the hike and the views! We didn't see any markings on the trails, but we survived :)

Newport State Park is a wonderful way to see Lake Michigan from the beach and take beautiful photographs from the beach. If you go off one of the main paved trails onto the shoreline trails, there are no signs until you reach 3 camp sites. You just keep walking though, because it is a just two hour walk on the trail to the parking lot. The beach is by far the most epic aspect of Newport State Park. The trails don't have much Lake Michigan scenery and I see the same plants/trees as elsewhere in Wisconsin. Newport State Park doesn't have as pretty unique landscape as Cave Point County Park. The main trails are in great shape yet the trails near the shoreline have hundreds of sharp rocks and tree roots not for weak legs. I hiked the Newport Trail, because the entire Europa trail is a gigantic loop around the outer park boundaries and didn't have that kind of time or water/food to finish that (takes whole day).

Cave Point is one of those places you just have to see when you're in Door County. The views are incredible, the waves crashing into the limestone cliffs are mesmerizing, and there are plenty of spots to stop and take it all in. Whether you're hiking, kayaking, taking photos, or just enjoying the scenery, there's always something going on. We got a little bit of everything in one visit, and it made for a memorable stop. Definitely a must-see Door County destination.

This is a great park for just hopping out to get an amazing view if you're not up for hiking. We did a loop from Whitefish Dunes state park that included circling through this park as well; it was a great half day hike. The views of the caves and crashing waves from above are amazing. This is definitely a park that might be challenging for anyone with small children who struggle to follow safety rules as there are very steep drops and it's important to stay a safe distance from the edge. The new connection between this and Whitefish dunes is really nice and features a few blowholes which spout water from below when the waves are particularly high.

Marinette Waterfalls - there's Good News and there''s Bad News. On top of that, we need to know The…read moreGood, The Bad and The Ugly. The Good News: Marinette County bills itself as the "Waterfall Capital of Wisconsin" and judging from the amount of fast water on the rivers in the county, there is plenty of evidence to back up that claim. The county tourism people would like you to come visit and tour the waterfalls. The Bad News: No one publishes a dedicated map to help you find the waterfalls and plan out a route to see them. There are too many to see in one day, possibly even two days. Without a map or a plan, you're liable to take three or four days to see them all and do a great deal of criss-crossing and back tracking to accomplish your goal. Incidentally, Marinette County does publish a map on their website that has waterfalls in the legend. It is one of six maps on the website and is not identified as a "waterfalls" map. It is the first of three maps listed as "Marinette County Waterfalls, Recreation & Snowmobile Maps" but once you print it, there's so much detail you can't see much of anything. It is next to useless as a PDF file, too. Now for the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The Good: Some of these waterfalls are breathtaking and well worth the effort to see them. The Bad: Others, not so much. The Good: Some are easy to reach without an real hiking experience. The Bad: Many are at the end of unimproved trails and will require some creative hiking to reach them. The Ugly: Some of the trails are a bit dangerous and downright scary to reach. A few caveats for potential waterfall hunters: 1) Most are off the beaten path, several miles from main highways. 2) Most of the access is on narrow, gravel roads, shared by enormous logging trucks. If you like your car to be kept in pristine condition, waterfall hunting in Marinette County is not for you. Drive with care! 3) Most of the waterfalls are in county parks. A nominal daily fee is required, however, once the fee is paid for the day, the permit is good in all the county parks. 4) Plan your day(s) before you head for Marinette County to go waterfall hunting. 5) Many of the waterfalls are actually whitewater rapids, very popular with rafters and kayakers but not so exciting for people looking for dramatic drops. I took a few hours and located the waterfalls on a map app and located the GPS coordinates. I was surprised how many of them are actually close together, but how far out some of them are. You actually have to go to Michigan to see waterfalls on boundary waters. My own favorites? Dave's Falls, Four Foot Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Twelve Foot Falls, Strong Falls and McClintock Falls. There are others that I need to go back to Marinette County to see.

In a whim, we decided to stay one night here to tour the historical landmark town. So glad we did…read more We got a site, #18, in a Thursday night, by making a request on the website. We have had luck with all the parks finding openings within a week or two of our travel (thought we tend to travel during the weekdays in the summer) The historical iron smelting village is fascinating. The state has done a wonderful job preserving the various community buildings, the iron smelting factory and some of the homes in the community. It is truly a loving, outdoor museum. Great information on signs and plaques throughout. We visited about two-hours before sunset on a Thursday evening. We rode to the historical village and were able to ride our back to the campground , after sunset. The village is bikable which is a great if mobility is an issue. There's a lot to see and it's spread out. Excellent photo ops around sunset. The sun sets behind the community area and the buildings can be nice "props". The sun also reflects off the rocks of the Niagara Escarpment which makes for a pretty photo. We biked the handicap road back to the campground. It's an easy and direct route between the two areas. There are clearings among the trees to get a wonderful, private view of the sunset. The trip is worth it simply to check out the historical community. What a gem in the UP. The campground was fun, yet busy and crowded for our tastes. Site 18 is good for a tent with some fairly flat grassy areas around it. The bro G bird behind and to one side of had RV's and were flexible about letting us spread into their site to find a good place for our tent. Similarly, the neighbors to our right, #20, camped in the bed of their truck. They struggled to find a level space and were concerned about mid with possible space. They parked partially on our site. It all worked out; we had great neighbors, but it was a bit of juggling. The fire rings can also be closer to a tent than we prefer. The washroom was close by and was clean. Small number of shower stalls to share with lots of people. Other sites looked larger and might have offered more privacy. The star of the show is accessibility to Lake Michigan. Wonderful sandy beaches. Lots of good walking, hiking. We would return to have more time to check out the peninsula. We had dinner at a fun restaurant in the water, not far from the campground (10-minutes): The Dock Grill & Bar. Nice people. Beautiful patio view of the water and good "bar food" options. The Shell gas station also has a mini mart with good meat and deli items, some grocery selections and frozen food.
