Started the day with a deckhand that was rude. The people who got into fish good brought their own bait & tackle. Would have been nice to know to have a little notice that if we brought our own tackle and bait it would have been a much more productive day. Tackle that was supplied was less than adequate. Had to ask several times for a weighted jib to reach the bottom where the fish are rather than too light and with the drift had little chance of catching a fish. Lastly I ask myself: Why am I paying for a 5 hour bottom fishing trip when part of the excursion was dedicated solely to the people who wanted to crab? That's pretty messed up and not fair to the people who paid to fish not be a spectator to the crabbing. Overall was a very disappointing experience. read more

He tried to net a fish which he was not successful and the guy lost the fish. Then I caught a canary fish but the captain took it and didn't bring it back?!?! I am a charter captain in Alaska, called Sherri and she was not understanding of how captains work as a team to put people on fish. As a charter captain I have never come back to the dock with such a poor catch. My brother, nephew and me went on a 10 hour Salmon, bottom fish and crabbing trip on Sept. 7th 2024. I believe the boat was the Sea Pirate with a female captain (unfortunately I can't remember her name), To start with I felt that there was too many clients on board.(12) with only one deck hand. There was limited room to move. On top of that the boat was a complete mess. Tackle was majorly disorganized and worn. We rode out about an hour and a half to the salmon grounds and started trolling. The port side of the boat had what seemed like repeat customers that definitely got special attention from the deck hand. More times than I could count, the captain would make a sharp turn and everyone's lines would be tangled up, making a huge mess. The deckhand kept telling her to please not turn so hard. Then the port side guys would always have help getting their gear untangled first and their gear back in the water first. (They caught 4 or 5 salmon between 4 of them. Us on the starboard side got 0 and I think the guys fishing directly out the back got 1.) I had 1 nibble and my bro and nephew had nothing in 5 hours. Then we switched up to bottom fishing. (Which means all different gear and setup.) The port side guys had their own personal gear with all new tackle and the rest of us used the boat provided equipment, which was a bit worn for wear. They ended up getting their full limits of bottom fish and lingcod. We ended up with 3 fish total, me not catching any of them. Not even a bite. Like I said before, the deck hand was 100% committed to helping out the port side guys. (They must've tipped good.) On the way in, we all pulled crab pots that were nice and full. Each person got 9 crab, which was pretty good. When we got back to the dock, the deckhand misplaced our 3 fish and somebody else claimed them. We didn't bother arguing about that, just really disappointed the trip was crap! We were planning on going with Dockside Charters out of Depoe Bay but they were booked that day. We went with them last year and it was an amazing trip. For one, the boat we were on was spotless! They took real pride in keeping their equipment clean and organized. Plus we slayed the fish without any real tangle ups. This trip with Newport Tradewinds was opposite. The boat was a filthy mess and we spent more time out of the water trying to untangle gear than we did actually fishing. We decided that we will never come back. read more

Scam. Paid $1000 deposit for a 10 hour charter. Reserved the entire boat months in advance. Walked in the day before and confirmed the reservations and times. The next day, while unpacking the car at 6 am for a 7am departure, my wife came out of their office and said the captain left at 530! The woman at they desk was rude. This is appalling behavior for a business, and it seems like they are not being forthcoming or truthfully about why they canceled our trip. Did someone give them more money? We had to fight with them to get our deposit back because they said we missed our 530 departure--they said they called to say the time changed, which is untrue. No boats leave at 530, and you have to show up an hour early to board at 430. That is ridiculous, and not how reservations work. We did everything we could to make sure we had all the information correct. They just decided not to honor our contract. We wanted our family trip to be memorial, and unfortunately, it is. read more

Like this place. Several boats operate out of this office. We spent the morning on the Enterprise. Nice crew on the boat. Boat was fairly new and in excellent shape. Bring your own snacks and drinks, and anything else you think you might need. Took a half day trip for rockfish and crab. Deckhands were on the ball, always where they needed to be when they needed to be there. The boat provides quality Daiwa reels on Ugly Stick rods with appropriate terminal tackle. For your catch, cleaning / filleting and vacuum sealing / freezing is available for a nominal fee. A good time was had by all! read more

We had a great experience with Newport Tradewinds. We did the 5-hour bottom-fishing trip with the crab pot add-on. We were on the Enterprise (which was clean and well kept), and Dave and Aaron were great. There were 10 people on our boat, and almost everyone caught their limits. Mostly rockfish, but also some ling cod. Three times someone caught two fish at once (one on each hook). Our captain (Dave) moved us around a fair amount to put us over fish. Each crab pot pulled in 12 large and delicious Dungeness crabs (after females and too small ones were returned to the water). When you return with your catch, you can get your fish filleted for $1 a piece, and Mark will cook the crabs (perfectly) for $1.25 each. They'll remove the shell and guts if you want, but you can also take the crabs whole. You can get your fillets and crabs to go in a bag, or they can vacuum pack portions for you for an additional fee (I don't know the breakdown, but it was $29 to vacuum pack 12 filets and 20 crabs). Barry let us know that frozen and vacuumed crabs will stay fresh for up to a year. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. We would happily fish with them again. read more

What fun! I can't tell you how many times I have gone out (lately on the Sea Pirate) and limited out. Halibut, Crab and Rock Fish. Captain Dillon does a great job and just does NOT give up! If they are not hitting in one place, he will start playing the ocean and find them (they can run but can't hide from him!). Plan on 9 or so hours with Halibut and 6-7 hours for Rock Fish and Crabs. Bring plenty to eat, sun screen (or waterproof clothes on the bad days) and have fun! read more

Started off the morning being told to be there at 5:30 am, for check in. Once I arrived, was told oh sorry boat doesn't leave till 7am and actually left at 7:50. Went to drop crab pods that took another 45 min. From there went a fishing spot a hour away fished for 45 minutes 50 min max and was told we are heading to another spot, then as we are heading there, get told fishing is done gonna pick up the crab pots. I went out yesterday with Captain Rob on the "Misty" for rock fishing. I have been on many charter boats up and down the coast. Captain Rob is AWESOM. He dose a WONDERFUL job of narration and explaining what and why things are happening. Why and when to do what for safety, how to catch more fish, he worked hard moving the boat to keep us on top of the fish and continually explained how to work the bait so we could maximize our catch. 9 of us on the boat, and I do believe we limited out on rock fish and also a good catch of crab. I go on a few charters and private guide trips every year. With the beautiful oceans everyone was booked full so I thought I would give this outfit a try. I booked my 8 yo daughters 1st ocean rock fish trip on Friday 8/9 for the following Sunday afternoon. On Saturday evening they called and said there weren't enough clients for an afternoon trip so I had to switch to the morning. I was hesitant as it is a 2hr 20 minute drive and we would have to leave by 4AM (very early for an 8yo) but agreed. Then she called back ten minutes later saying the afternoon trip was on. We get ready and make it almost 1 hour to Newport and they called apologizing that the trip was cancelled. Not due to weather as it has never been better in the summer, illness/ injury, mechanical failure; all these would have been disappointing yet understandable. No, it was for lack of clients despite them saying it was on just 14 hours prior. Two hours wasted and $15 in fuel were the least of my worries. They are on speaker phone as I am driving and my daughter hears. Immediately she bursts into tears. Had I been able to get a picture of her face it would sum it all up. The look she had at that moment is probably the look you will have if you book here and get the same service we did. I have been out many times in the ocean on charters; with a couple other outfits in Newport, with a couple in Depoe Bay, a couple in Garibaldi, as well as some in Massachusetts and Florida. Some were great fishing trips, some not so much and that is to be expected as it is called "fishing," but none had ever pulled something like this. I don't know if it was the office or a boat captain that pulled the plug on the trip. I do know that I would not trust an outfit that would make my daughter cry and not so much as off her an apology. read more

This group used to be my go to for deep sea fishing, unfortunately over the last few years their services have declined in value and the customer is the one that pays for it. This year during Salmon season was the final straw. They decided to run 6 hour trips to a fishing grounds that is mainly reserved for 8 hour trips. Mainly due to the fact that it takes over 2 hours to reach the fishing grounds and the same amount of time to return. Needless to say, not worth my time. In a 7ish minute tutorial Captain Andrew gave I was the second person on our boat to catch a fish. Even more hilarious is that I kept catching fish. Just got back from a 5-hour bottom fish and crabbing trip on the enterprise boat. It was an all round enjoyable experience and I would totally come back again to these guys! The boat- very clean, 50+ footer. The captain and deckhands were extremely helpful and courteous. They did not pressure us into tipping them at the end, but the tip was well deserved. The trip- meticulous and organized well from the get go. Staff at the store were super helpful in helping me chose the trip that I wanted. It was scheduled for 7am-Noon. We gathered at the shop around 6:15am, boarded by 6:45 and left the dock just after 7. We were fishing by 735. There were about 14 of us on the boat. The water conditions were a little rough at times, but our captain handled it well. No one got sea sick, which is always a plus! We dropped off our crab pots about a mile out from the dock and picked them up on our return. The fishing- we fished a few different spots for about 10-15 mins each. Everyone caught their limit of 7 assorted rockfish (all were black seabass). Unfortunately no one caught a ling cod. One guy caught a Coho salmon, but had to release it because he did not have a salmon stamp and also because of the barbless hook rule in Oregon ( barbed hooks for rockfish). Overall, it was a productive trip for fishing. On our return we had about 7 crabs per person that opted to crab (the limit per person is 12). We made it back to the dock by 11pm, 1 hour before the proposed time. We were all happy. At the dock, there was a crab cooker and 2 fish cutters. They can fillet, gut, gill and scale your fish for between $1-2. Inside the shop they will freeze pack your catch for $1-2 and even freeze it for you for FREE if you are coming from out of town and need to bring it back. Great company, people and an awesome time! After booking a FULL day, 10hour charter for the holiday (two months in advance), we purchased fishing licenses for the three of us, with the additional Salmon tags and shellfish licenses, (Total $200) then we were informed the day before the trip that they were not doing anything more than a six hour trip that day. Sadly, and without choice, we drove the 200miles and accepted the short tour (for $300) We wish they had informed us that ALL wild Salmon that we caught would be thrown back and ONLY farm raised Salmon (with micro-chips in their heads) would be allowed. WE WOULD HAVE NEVER AGREED TO BOOK THE CHARTER !! After $500 we were allowed to keep only one, unhealthy, 4 pound, fish. ALL of the other, healthy, fat, naturally robust, Wild Salmon that we caught were thrown back and we were all thoroughly disappointed. The crew was great...especially the guy that helped us (can't remember his name, he had a gazillion tattoos though) he was the friendliest and most helpful The boat did rock a bit more than my tummy liked (and when they pulled up the crab pots the smell made me almost toss my cookies) but overall it was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to do it again. Sea Pirate II was an awesome boat! Captain and deckhand was great! Very professional and made sure we caught fish and a ton of crab!! Make sure you get a crab pot! Have the crab cleaned and steamed at the dock that is a must!! Of the two ladies that cleaned the fish one was great the other was not good(butchered our salmon)!! Watch them clean a few to see which one has the better knife skills. Get your salmon cut into steaks if you do fillets you loose lots of good meat. read more

Always a favorite spot. I come out from Baltimore, Maryland about once a year, and try to fish with them 2 or 3 times. They get you on fish. Even with no experience you'll have fun and catch fish. They supply the gear, but I always bring my own. I've never had a bad experience with any of the crew. They're good people, so don't forget to tip. And bring some Dramamine or ginger snaps if you don't want to get seasick. I've seen at least one seasick person on every trip. Also, definitely rent a crab pot for the extra $20. They drop it off on the way out, and steam your crabs for a buck each and fillet your catch for a buck each back at the docks. Great times! read more
