This is a great place to browse around when walking in downtown. There are always interesting/unique gifts and candy. And even if you're not buying, it would be hard to not find most of the items entertaining. They have a huge selection of magazines, ranging from common ones (e.g. EW, the Economist, Men's Health, etc) to hard-to-find international ones (e.g. Vogue from different countries). The prices are pretty standard with the more obscure ones are more expensive. The service is great. I once was looking for a magazine that they had at the Sac location, but was not yet in Davis. The guy at the counter said that they could request it from the Sac location and place it on hold for me. I received a call the next day, and was able to buy it that day with no issue. Love eclectic things. I was a band geek in high school about a hundred years. Haven't changed much. I love this store. People were very helpful and I actually found what I had been looking for for a long time. My daughter goes to Davis. We live in the Sacramento area. I don't get to go to Davis often so this store was a geeky happy treat. Will go back closer to Christmas. I'm getting tired of doing most of my shopping on line, Amazon. This place has everything kids & grownups hanker for (every time we drive by my kids yell "candy store!") and I confess to trudging in there on more than one rainy day occasion to buy my kids a gummy rat or candy bracelet and be done with the whining. They eat the little rodent tails and I look at literary magazines. What could be better? Also, I buy most of my cards here. Not cheap, but really well selected and thoughtful. Plus Andrew-- lovely man. Ask him for recommendations about your husband's next cigar purchase or other manly accessories- he knows everything. This place is a gold mine of study munchies, quirky items, and food for thought. They have tons of magazines and newspapers. They have a collection of unique glass bottle sodas from in the sac area and the wider country. They are always chilled. My favorites: their dry lavender soda, leninade, ginger beer, and BAWLS. There's over 20 varieties. They also have a huge collection of candy. All the classics you'll find at a grocery store plus many more that are specialty and or imported. Bueno is a delicious European chocolate I get here. Hammonds sea salt caramel chocolate bar is really good too. They have lots of haribo and other gummy candy too. They have lots of cards and quirky gifts. Mustache themed items, quote items, and nice stationary and notebooks. If you want really unique school supplies, come here. read more

They are alive and well at Newsbeat, where you can stand and glaze over the pretty pictures of magazines that adhere to your interests (and maybe even buy one out of guilt). I am giving this 5 stars because it's a good little shop. I generally go to Newsbeat for the sole reason of getting an Its-it (my favorite ice cream treat). But they also have an amazing magazine, candy, cards, and quirky gift selection! As kids, my sister and I got to pick out an Archie comic- the selection of which would keep us occupied for plenty of time for my dad to browse. In a rare experience for me, this is a place I used to work and like it as much now as I did before my term of employment. I wish I could say the same for every job I've held. The owners take such care with everything that the store carries, and put such work into experimenting with new products, the inventory stays perpetually fresh and interesting. Not that you would always even be able to tell when something new appears--there is such a variety of, well, things to browse through here that it's hard to keep track of it all. Their magazine selection is phenomenal, better than the perhaps larger but far blander selection at Border's. Their candy selection is unbeatable--curse you, Violet Crumbles, for being so delicious, with your tempting honeycomb lattice beneath a chocolate mantle. I don't know if they still carry these, but they used to sell out almost as soon as the new shipment arrived. Anyway, I'm digressing wildly here. The point is: if you live in Davis, you have to go here, and you have to become a regular. It is what is done. read more

AGGHHH i love this place so much. this is THE place to buy your tobacco/cigarettes. their rolling tobaccos are on the slightly expensive side, but at least you don't have to commute to berkeley to get certain brands! they also have really cool vintage(?) items, candies and mints and such. it's a really fun place so at least drop by and have a look around :) read more

I love Newsbeat! I'll admit I do very little magazine shopping here; I mostly come for the waters, sodas, and excellent selections of cards. It's a nice place to drop in and buy someone a thank you card or sympathy card that doesn't come from Target. The staff has always treated me with courtesy. When I have more time I love poking around the aisles and seeing what they have in the way of gifts. It's very cohesive and not thrown together the way a lot of boutiques are. read more

My roommate introduced me to NewsBeat and she goes nearly every day (well, not now that it's Lent and she's given up chocolate) but that's because they have a wide assortment of European and American chocolates. I recommend the Chocolove brand; there's a love poem in every wrapper and nearly 12 different flavors (crystallized ginger in dark chocolate is my next endeavor). Also, if you like gummi candies, they have over 10 different kinds of Haribo gummies and they change them throughout the year. They also sell gum in square boxes with funny phrases like "Pocket Maraca" and a lip balm called "Go Intercourse Yourself." It's always fun to go see what new cards, stationary and magazines they get in, plus I saw that they're expanding their magazine library so look out for new titles. read more

This is my favorite store in Davis. It has more magazines than I even knew existed. They have the best calendars in town (in Dec-Jan). And, they've always been very friendly to me, even when I don't buy anything. I always bring my out-of-town friends here, and they tend to get stuck in the candy aisle. If they don't have something that you want, they are able to special order items... just ask. Dogs are welcome in the store, and they'll even offer your dog a treat. read more

They have an awesome mag selection. Import candy choices are off the charts, If I smoked I would be pleased at their tobacco selection. I get a lot of holiday cards here. Basic soda selection, some exotics, water obviously. They are not overcharging for anything -if you think that you got to used to shopping at Wall-Mart and HA we caught you- All the people who work here are nice. 2.5 stars I hate to be the one to break their 4-5 star streak, but I just had a negative experience there. Basically, the guy behind the counter treated my friend and I like we were thieves, which I've never gotten before. On top of that, he was very rude. I understand that with this type of small business, you have to keep a watch over all your goods. But damn, the hostility! I was looking to spend $$$ on an array of monthly edition poetry books (which they had). He thought I was looking to stuff them down my pants (which I won't). In the end, I decided not to give them my business and my friend and I walked out having bought only a Twix chocolate. Yeah they have neat stuff, a vast selection of all kinds of 'zines. If it weren't for the a-hole employee, this place would have gotten a 4. I'm not saying don't go here. I visited this store with my six year old son. My son paid for some candy with a twenty dollar bill, wich the (rude) cachier insisted was a ten. He refused to give us our deserved change, and then forced us to leave his store. Outside a group of teenage boys were sitting on the sidewalk, making minimal noise. The owner came out and said, and I quote, "Loud teens make me want to kill someone." Overall, the service was very poor and the employees were quite rude. This might be one of my new favorite stores in Davis. I can't really say much about the magazines; I hardly gave them a glance, but they have the most excellent selection of unique, cute letterpress greeting cards I've seen anywhere around here. Maybe I'm just a sucker for pretty type and letterpress, but I was thoroughly impressed by their selection (for every occasion!). This is definitely the place to come if you want something a little more unique than a generic card from Target. This is the best place to go if you're looking for a variety of items, such as magazines, candy, tobacco, and sodas. Sure you could probably get these things at plenty of other stores, but Newsbeat offers obscure versions of these items hardly available elsewhere. I often find myself wandering in to browse whilst on other business downtown and discover that i have spent far too much time there when i check the time. Their selection of weird zines, gummie candies and European chocolates is enough to draw me in anytime I'm nearby. And the It's-It's and Choco-Tacos are a plus too. Having some time to explore downtown Davis, I just stumble upon this fantastic huge newsstand. The selection is worthy of a magazine browsers dream. Ever since I moved out of Davis, I've longed for Newsbeat. Not only do they have a selection of imported candy that rivals that of Cost Plus, they are one of the few place I have been able to find It's It Ice Cream Sandwiches. Who knew this place existed? I didn't until an acquaintance kept name dropping Newsbeat. They have all the magazines that I need to have and most likely can't afford. It makes me feel like just because I am out of the Bay Area, I am not totally lacking my culture fix. Plus, the candy selection is extraordinary with many types of licorice and chocolates to choose from. My new addiction though lies in the cards, great selection and no need to go to Papyrus when I can get some cool designed cards from independent card makers. read more
