How is it that I lived in Davis for 5 years, never came to The Candy House, then on a visit back to Davis for a conference, I discovered this great little gem? I really should have explored the town more back then... Anyway, The Candy House of Davis is awesome. It's a little shop with a lot to offer. Lots of chocolate, lots of truffles, lots of fudge, lots of love. The guy who runs the shop is so nice - he clearly loves what he does and loves connecting with people. I ended up ordering a box of 10 truffles and got to pick each piece. Since it's Mother's Day this weekend, I also got to pick a cute little box and card as well, which was a lovely touch. Afterwards, he asked me what sample I wanted and I tried some fudge with walnuts - delicious! Fudge was so smooth, and the nuts added a good crunch to it.

This is an eclectic little chocolate shop on the outskirts of downtown, and I would highly recommend you stop by. You really can't go wrong with chocolate, so there's not much NOT to like about this place. We got 6 truffles and a chocolate covered caramel, and had a fun taste test among ourselves. The owner was super sweet and gave us all free samples after the purchase -- HEFTY samples, that definitely were worth a decent amount. Plus the place was quite and perfect to sit and hang out with some cute music in the background. Maybe I'm in a post-chocolate high, but I definitely think Candyhouse of Davis deserves high remarks :)

I had to check this place out after receiving a box of truffles from my boss for Christmas. It's on third street just east of the train tracks in downtown Davis, and as soon as you walk in and get buffeted by a rich chocolate fragrance, you'll know you've found the right store. Their offerings go way beyond truffles. I bought a slab of English toffee which although delicious, I wished had more buttery toffee flavor (I docked one star). They have a wide selection of chocolate cast in different shapes: airplanes, roosters, the still-talking but severed head of Bill O'Reilly (just kidding on that last one). But do check out the truffles! Thirty different varieties of "the Pyramid Truffles of Le Chocolat Elegant" with a convenient key to their outside designs that reveals their inside treasures. These will be my secret weapons of mass seduction next Valentine's Day along with a bottle of Domaine Chandon's Blanc de Noirs. Try fine chocolate with this champagne and you'll know exactly what I mean. Do not let this technology fall into the wrong hands or we bachelors are all doomed (to raise our game even more)!

After breaking the ice and mentioning that it was my first visit to the Davis location, while my spouse had been there a few times before, the employees became more relaxed and accommodating. I appreciated their friendly service and the generous portion of the Kava Cloud Breaker. The Davis location offers plenty of flavors to choose from, which made for a great experience. The Cloudbreaker immediately met my taste buds with bitterness and then left my tongue completely numb for several minutes. Perhaps those sensations would have paid off if they were followed by a calming or THC-like effect, but I didn't experience any change in mental state. The comfortable atmosphere saves this establishment from 1 star. Dim lights, leather couches, chill music, and colorful tiki wall art make for a decent study spot or date night. However, if you're hanging out at a business, you gotta support it, and to support it, you gotta buy something -- I can't see myself buying anything kava-related with any ounce of enjoyment. Surely there must be some variation of a kava drink that tastes delightful. I don't want to spend any more money finding out though.

There is a lot of table space in the cafe and when UC Davis is in session, I've found many of the tables to be occupied by students doing just that. Mishka's Cafe has been around since 1995 and is a beloved place in Davis. It's a traditional cafe that has a welcoming atmosphere. When you first walk into the cafe you'll see the food case just to your left. It is filled with cafe items such as croissants, muffins, and cookies. There are savory items as well as sweet. I found the quality of the food here to be quite good and unique. Sometimes cafe food just feels like it came from somewhere else, but even if these did, they have a uniqueness about them. For example, the chocolate croissant is very flakey with a good amount of chocolate in the interior. It really surprised me! I also found the ham and cheese croissant to be very rich in flavor. My only gripe about either or these items was the heating method. I'm not sure how they are heated up, but they feel as though they used one of those quick heaters to quickly get them ready rather than a good toaster to get the items nice and crisp. As good as they are they were a bit limp due to the heating method. In terms of coffee, it's perfectly adequate. They have special offerings as well as their traditional menu. I found the coffee to be mild and friendly. It's not too strong nor very unique. It's just a solid cup. Sometimes that's really all you need.
