This is a classic old school small town café - 3.5 stars. Next Door Café is about what you'd expect. They're mostly average. But with a little effort and fine tuning, they could easily be 4 stars...they mostly need to cook the food properly and pay more attention to customers. If they threw in a few local ingredients and better seasoning, they might be able to charge slightly more and possibly elevate everything to 5 stars if they wanted to go that route. Everyone knows there's lots of awesome dairy, eggs, meat, and veggies in Wisconsin, right? The main focus, like most small town cafes, is breakfast. So that's what we ordered. They also have burgers, sandwiches, wraps, slices of pie, along with giant cinnamon & caramel rolls - yum! They have home-made local maple syrup and preserves too! I grabbed a bottle of maple syrup to take home. Both of our breakfasts were decent, nothing to rave about. Pretty much everything was really big though. And the prices are very reasonable. So you can get a bunch of food without breaking the bank. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: 1. My hash browns weren't cooked all the way through. So they had that weird, slightly crunchy mouth feel consistency inside that you get from raw potatoes. Yuck! Easy fix though. 2. My friend's apple pie was under cooked and watery. So it pretty much melted and lost its shape when it was heated up. The crumbles on top were soggy. The apples were crunchy and weren't cooked all the way. It might have needed more emulsifier thickener too. I expect WAY better from a home-made, home-cooked cooked pie. Disappointing! Again, easy fix. 3. Finally, the service kinda sucked. The girl serving us spent most of her time hanging out and talking to an older dude sitting at the back table. (They obviously knew each other.) We heard all about her mom's divorce, a dispute with a co-worker, etcetera, etcetera. I don't mind this sort of thing...but only if you take care of customers first. There was only one other table of customers. But it took her forever to take our first orders. And she never came around to offer us more coffee until she finally returned much later, after all of our food was gone. Customer service first, goof off second. Once again, an easy fix. All of the negatives could be a fluke. It might have been much better if we came on another day. But our first (and only) visit was mostly underwhelming. -Daddy Maxx Retro

Nice little local cafe on main street in New Richmond. It's nothing fancy, but with good food and service at a reasonable price it's worth checking out if you're in the area. We had the scrambled egg skillet, haystack skillet (a biscuit, covered in hashbrowns, eggs and gravy with your choice of meat), and French toast. The skillets were fine, but the French toast really stood out. The batter they use was very flavorful and the toast was grilled to perfection. We used a $30 for $15 Yelp deal so the meal, with a piece of bourbon pecan pie to go, was crazy cheap. But I'd go back for the French toast even without a deal.

I had one of the breakfast skillets. Eggs, hash brown, sausage, and bacon all mixed into one great breakfast. Price was reasonable and service was good. My kids had plenty to eat as the pancakes were large. We even got some breakfast to go for one member in our group that decided to stay in bed. Thanks for a great breakfast!

In the end, the three of us agreed that we definitely had a 5 star experience. We arrived at opening and we happened to be served by the owner himself - a really nice guy. He gave us a brief history of the bar, which is extensive. The Old Saloon has been around with the current name since 1975 (the building is a lot older). The current owner has been at the helm for 30 years! Obviously, he's knows what he's doing. Our food was excellent...everything from the Ellsworth Cheese Curds, the wings, the salad, the burger, the Chicago style hotdog, and the savory mac & cheese soup! Of course, since this is Wisconsin, they have a great selection of beer on tap. The prices were amazingly reasonable to. We probably would have paid double in the Twin Cities. The décor is cool too. Apparently, the owner's wife is the chief decorator and she does a great job. I particularly love the vintage and antique stuff. They have some very old and rare original neon signs, an old Schwinn Phantom, and an antique penny scale. There are a few reproductions here & there but most of it is totally original. Cool! Thanks for a great experience! Thumbs up! - Maxx

The bar had a few large screen TV's with various sports on and there is a big (separate) game room area for kids to be occupied while parents can enjoy a drink. However I did find it weird that the men's bathroom has a one way mirror that overlooks the playroom while using the urinal? A few reasons I couldn't go higher than a 3 on this experience. First of all it has to do with the "quick" service. I ordered a bowl of soup, which was huge! It came out hot and pretty tasty... but my main course came out only minutes after. So I had to make a decision... power through my soup in hopes to still have hot food when I was finished. Or eat them both at the same time... I chose the latter. For my main course I had the Fish and Chips. 3 pieces of fish, two that were stuck together, served on top of a small pile of over done fries. The fish was crispy on the outside but a bit mushy in the inside. the bartender, who was very nice and friendly, was way too busy to refill my drink because she was busy making drinks for the entire restaurant. I finally stopped a waitress to get a refill. Judging by the atmosphere and the relatively good crowd, this seems to be a well liked local place. So I have to believe that I maybe my fish and chips were just a one off. I also thought that the entree was fair priced at $15, but $10 for the soup was a bit much. (And now that I look at the menu (the next day) the soup is listed at $5.99...makes me wonder why I was charged $9.99??). Maybe the $6 is for a cup? It doesn't offer a cup or a bowl on the menu, just a price of $5.99. Shame on me for not noticing and asking I guess!
