The Kare-Kare is still just as amazing as I remembered. I love that they rotate their menu, which gave us the perfect excuse to try a few new dishes this time around: Fishballs (4.75/5): These had a great texture that felt more like a fish cake, and the sauce pairing was delish Crab Rice (4.5/5): Really enjoyed this! It had a delicious flavor and a rich, risotto-style consistency NY Strip (4/5): A solid, basic steak. Nothing incredibly unique about it, but it was still well-cooked and tasty Eggplant Omelette / Tortang Talong (3.75/5): Decent, but this one just wasn't particularly to my personal taste. Ube Cheesecake (3/5): You can definitely taste the authentic ube flavor, but the texture was a bit grainy and the sweetness level was a little too high for me. I honestly want to try EVERY SINGLE ITEM on the menu. ＊Longanizza Sliders $16 Weekend special. As a longanizza lover, this might be the best slider I've had in a long time. Super juicy pork patty with bang bang sauce. Heard there's a chance it'll stay on the regular menu if enough people show it some love! ＊Kare Kare Mafaldini $28 Inspired by Filipino kare kare, they toss fresh handmade malfadini in a rich peanut sauce with shrimp paste instead of serving it over rice. Tried Next Door Provisions for the first time, and I can see why it's so hard to get a reservation. Every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious, but the Kare Kare was on another level--it was so good it almost made me emotional. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, making it a great spot for an intimate dining experience. That said, the space is quite small, so it's not ideal for larger groups. There are many regional omelette varieties of national import. Taiwan has its o-a-tsian with oysters, India has its bread omelette, and finally I was able to find somewhere near NYC making the Philippines' famous tortang talong, which uses a splayed eggplant as its foundation. The rendition here is quite good but a bit bourgeois, with a few dainty flowers sprinkled in - and no banana ketchup in sight. While this was the dish I came in search of, I ended up preferring the bibingka pancakes. These are some of the best pancakes I've had in recent memory, with a not-too-sweet, buttery dense core and a salted egg yolk in the center that adds to the richness. The environs are a bit sterile, as the restaurant extends into the lobby of some new wrap construction apartment building that wouldn't be out of place in suburban Dallas. I hope they eventually find a more accessible location closer to the core of Jersey City's historically Filipino community in McGinley Square. read more

It's in the middle of bumblef*ck nowhere NJ, so unless you have a car, you'd need to take a bus, then a scooter, then a camel, to get to this place. And that makes me extra mad because I just recently sold my camel. (Pause) I've been reminded that Uber/Lyft exists. Oops. Anger dissipating. Back to the food. The delicious, delicious food. There was nothing that we tried here that wasn't world class. - Coconut Chia Pudding: Typical it sounds, but typical it's not. This ain't your crunchy granola, Lululemon concoction. I don't know exactly what they put in this pudding (besides maybe crack), but it was rich and flavorful and more coconutty than a Bounty bar. - Kare Kare Mafaldini: A hearty mafaldini meets a succulent beef brisket, and they get married in a savory peanut sauce. The result is the tastiest wedding your mouth has ever been invited to. - Kansi Shanks: Picture fall-off-the-bone meat cooked with nicely charred greens you've never heard of (batwan?) and fruit like long peppers and jackfruit. You'll want this for the carnivores in your crew. - Bibingka Pancake: I literally still fantastize about the fluffiness of these incredible cakes perfectly skilleted with coconut flakes, butter, condensed milk, macapuno cream, and surprise salted duck egg yolk. Picture Japanese souffle pancakes made by a SE Asian perfectionist. You've pictured heaven on a plate. As a special bonus: This beautiful cafe is covered in plants. A good mix of how food should be with a twist of ingredients like pasta and other herbs. The dessert we got was disappointing. It was hard, like a rock. We were told it just came out the fridge. The cutest little cafe -- a westside JC gem! Located in the Agnes, the interior is super homey, bright, and spacious. There's a decent amount of seating with additional seating right outside in the Agnes lounge as well. A great place to enjoy a meal, coffee, and WFH. I usually go to the 440 Starbucks a block away but so glad this place opened (support small businesses instead)! The service is excellent, everyone is super attentive and kind. They take the time to talk to you and really get to know you which is super sweet. The food is also great; I got the BLT and iced latte with an extra shot of espresso (bc I love caffeine obviously). The BLT has this tomato jam in it which makes it super unique and the bread is brioche which adds to the amazingness of it. I'm very pleased and impressed with this restaurant. The fusion is incredibly smart and authentic. I can taste the Filipino flavors merged with other asian & italian flavors. My personal favorite is the Kare kare mafaldini and the squid ink palabok. My spouse's favorite is the katsu sando. We are also very impressed with the pork belly adobo, gnocchi sardi and the tortang talong. I also love and appreciate that they were able to provide chicken tenders for my baby. It's totally off the menu but they were able to make one for my son. The chef/owners were very accommodating and welcoming. The resto is such a cute place to chill and enjoy a meal. Brilliantly executed Asian fusion that excites while being delicious. The owners are a friendly couple, and they take tremendous pride in their food, which exudes warmth. It's comfort food like you've never had. My wife and I drove here from a half hour away after seeing the eclectic menu, and we're glad we did. We tried the peach salad, the malfadine kare kare, and the ube basque cheesecake. The salad was a refreshing summer option, the kare kare was a buttery peanut stew with strips of pork belly over perfectly cooked pasta, and the cheesecake was packed with ube flavor. Will definitely make the drive back to try other items! The restaurant can be a little hard to find, it's tucked on the back side of the Agnes apartment building, and you have to turn the corner on the right after parking in the lot next to the dog park. read more

We are so, so glad we chose Next Door Provisions to cater our wedding reception at White Eagle Hall. Chef Ruby and James were fantastically helpful, open-minded, kind, and generous throughout our planning process and day of reception. Coordinating our NJ event from across the country via phone and email was easy and fun - we could always count on a prompt and thoughtful response from NDP's co-owners. They worked hand-in-hand with our day-of coordinator to manage allergen info and handle food delivery on the day, which was a huge time and worry saver. Oh, right - the food. In a word, incredible. We got to dine in at the restaurant and taste their standard dishes as well as the large-format catering versions at our reception. Everything was insanely delicious. Our guests raved about the buffet NDP created all night long (even a few very particular titos and titas). There was more than enough for everyone and leftovers the next couple days. Catering can be such a mixed bag - you eat the penne alla vodka and forget about it the next day. We are so grateful that we got to have a truly unforgettable meal at our reception and it's all thanks to Chef Ruby and James. James explained their restaurant's concept and vision, so that there wouldn't be any confusion. Brought here by friends who either wanted to try, already tried and tried & also lived in the area. I was down for the foodie experience. What a great, clean, welcoming space! Like a cozy hangout, I almost expected big dumpy pillow chairs to chillax in by the windows. (there were none BTW). The guy behind he counter had a genuine, Welcome To My Place smile, and only then I knew he had some great food to share. I had: Mango Guava drink. He made me 2-step when he told me it would have ginger in it, and I said, Yes, pleeease! Tasty stuff, and gave me a warm vacation vibe. That ginger hit the mark, and balanced nicely with the sweetness of the juice. I didn't care it was $7. I dunno what coffee folks pay for coffee, but I considered this my treat. Pork Belly Adobo. Oh snap! Such a cool way to present and serve and enjoy pork adobo! A great purple rice portion with a pinch of crunchy garlic on top (i wanted more garlic) and some fingerling potatoes, just firm enough but not crunchy, and some kimchi with the perfect spicy, un-salty tartness. I gobbled it all up. Yumz. Ube Basque Cheesecake. Niiiice. I cherish my carbs. This made me nod in agreement of the goodniss. Fought myself to put down the fork. Great flavor, not mega sweet, great crust, a sweet sour cream dollop, and the coconut strips were great, not over jellied & firm, like I've seen on other sweet treats. The lil flower placement made it feel like my reward for killing that adobo dish. Had a taste of my friend's Yuzu Cheesecake & enjoyed it, but that brilliant tingling yuzu finish wasn't gonna take me to the end. Great space, great staff, great food. Next Door Provisions is a gem. This Jersey City spot is so welcoming and offers fresh takes on some comfort foods and some staples. It's on the bottom floor of an apartment complex but is new, clean and modern. The place leans into a slightly retro bohemian look - mid century type furniture, neatly dangling plants, tastefully stacked books. It's intensely inviting. We stopped in on a rainy morning and a man greeted and served us warmly - even explained which local farms grew the produce. I got their biscuits and gravy that was intensely savory and delicious. This place is one of the best in Jersey City imo. Food alone, probably in my top 3. My gf and I ordered 3 dishes, the katsu sando, spicy chicken ramen, and bibingka. Gosh, where do I start. The katsu sando was perfect, layers of delicious and complementing flavors and textures. A nice piece of fried chicken, with a good proportion of slaw, on perfectly toasted bread (brioche?). Not too greasy. Came with a small side or popcorn. A different, but very welcome take on a typical katsu sando. The spicy chicken ramen was also perfect. A nice, wholesome, milky-looking broth, with swirls of red. Delicious, hearty, but light taste coming from some creative combo of seasonings. Straight ramen noodles cooked al dente were a perfect match. Reminds me of a new take on well made tonkotsu ramen. This was my first time having a bibingka and it was delicious. Considering the creative takes that this place puts forth in their food, I'd guess that it's different from a traditional bibingka. That aside, i'd say it was a thicker pancake, but not dense. In fact, very fluffy inside. The outside had a thin layer of crisp to it. There was a salted egg in the middle that we took little pieces of to enjoy with the sweet pancake parts surrounding it. Coconut shavings were sprinkled on the top and some kind of tasty butter in the center. All very very tasty. I had both of their fruit drinks. The Mango Guava drink and Yuzu Cider. This is not just fruit juice. This place elevates everything they make. The mango guava drink is mango and guava nectar combined with ginger honey tea (I think is what one of the owners said, who are also very nice, personable people). If you need a healthy morning boost, get this drink. The Yuzu Cider was a different type of delicious. A very well balanced combo of apple cider and yuzu. Yuzu was not overpowering or overly sour. We also took to-go their pork belly adobo, ube cheesecake, carrot cake, and a few cookies. Half of these have already been eaten and we definitely need to go to the gym this week. The space is on the smaller side, but has a very pleasant vibe and aesthetic. Modern, lots of plants, well lit with natural light. Costs are on the pricier side, but for this level of food and service, it's a steal in my opinion. The owners James and Ruby are lovely people. Very knowledgeable, hospitable, and just warm people. I have more good things to say, but I'll just leave it at that. If you're into asian food, go here and you won't be disappointed unless you prefer your food very traditional. Fusion lovers would love this place. It's a nice blend of familiar yet new flavors.
