I would have given it 4 stars because the titas behind the counter were rude to my husband when he was trying to order (they had their friends jump the line and the friends even went behind the counter to get their food while my hubby patiently waited for them to finish ordering). I am a Duke (lol) of Philippine Bread House because I patronize them often making it highly convenient to walk a few feet to Cafe Pilipino. The cafe serves as a Turo Turo style table of food. You point point at what you want and they scoop it up. You can do combo platters or order by container. The menu is not exactly clear so i question the receipt often with good reason. The food is hit or miss. I have had some dishes that were good but more often had dishes that were meh, just ok. You have to watch as they dish out to prevent getting an unfilled container or getting a container full of fat with no meat. No indoor or outdoor dining. You can get your fix for authentic Filipino cuisine at this little gem of a Filipino cafe near Journal Square. It also looks to be family owned with a few grandmas in the back working their magic and youth managing the customer-facing front. This is a well kept combo shop, housing a Filipino bakery on one side, and the cafe with both hot and cold food available. If you are not already familiar with Filipino food, it is very strongly flavored and has lots of salt. So get your glass of water ready. I highly recommend either their chicken or pork adobo. Also, when they finally get the ingredients again, halo halo is always a great Filipino dish. Generally, the prices are pretty cheap for their Filipino pastries. However, they recently upped the prices on their buffet menu from around $5 for a meal to over $8. Before it was a no brainer to get the combo meal with 2 entrees for $5.25. But now that same meal costs $9.25! That's a 60% price increase! Even when I gave it a chance during my last visit and purchased to the 2 entree combo, I found that the serving sizes actually decreased! I only got about 5 small pieces of meat, one piece of potato, and a ton of old and slightly dry rice. It was more like a sample appetizer than an "entree." (Check my posted images) Normally they have seating inside, unfortunately they haven't pivoted during the pandemic and did not setup any outdoor seating. They have limited customer capacity, shut down indoor dining, required customers to wear masks, and the staff also wears masks. I'd have given the spot 4 stars or better but, after the 60% price increase the value just isn't there anymore. Paying $10 a pop is pricy for a small lunch sized meal from a buffet. If it was made to order, perhaps it could stand. But this is a to-go buffet, with food that's been sitting there for hours. After all, we're not in Manhattan. You can tell some of the reviewers are such "Karens" & complain over stupid things. They complain that the food isn't that good, yet they also complain that it's always packed in the weekend. If their food is really bad, then why is it always packed in the 1st place??? It also depends what time of day you go - obviously the earlier you go, the fresher the food is (and more selection). Great food at a cheap price. It's located in the Philippine Bread House with the typical cafeteria-style set-up that you'd see in a food court at the mall. There's plenty of seating, they have a big flat-screen TV in the corner that's always tuned into The Filipino Channel (TFC), and there's a small parking lot next to the building. I've always set high standards for Filipino restaurants because I'm so used to the homemade meals that my mom cooks, but I've been coming here for the past decade and Café Pilipino has yet to disappoint me with its authenticity, variety, and flavor. They even serve bubble tea and halo-halo (a popular Filipino shaved ice dessert). I've had many dishes here over the years but during my most recent visit, I ordered the bopis and paksiw na lechon, and I tried my friend's binagoongan. Everything was really good. My friend and I each ordered two dishes served with 2 cups of rice - only $5.50 per person! What a bang for your buck!!! I'm deducting a star because although the food is very tasty, it's often served cold and the parking lot is so tiny that it's almost always a pain to get in and out of. I used to love this place, coming here once or twice a week after work. Since the pandemic that decided to only stay open until 5pm so no chance for me to stop by coming from Newark. By the time I get there most of the food are gone. I try to avoid coming here during the weekend because the place gets packed but since I can't make it during the week I stopped by one Saturday. The employees are friendly and the food is cooked fresh everyday. I've been coming here since I was a kid. They have plenty to choose from at breakfast including tocilog, tapsilog, and my favorite, longsilog (sweet longanisa sausage). This comes with a scoop of fried garlic rice or pancit and a fried egg ($5 total). This is far from healthy, but it sure is tasty. Back in the day, you would get 2 heaping scoops of rice, but they've weened it down to a conservative single scoop. BUMMER. An extra scoop is $0.80. If you want to get another dish instead of the fried egg, pay an extra $0.75. During the afternoon, they extend their lunch and dinner selection, which often includes sinigang, barbecue (Filipino-style kebabs), adobo, kare kare, dinuguan, lumpia, and much more. The menu changes everyday depending on the availability of ingredients. Most likely, you'll have the best and freshest choice if you arrive earlier in the day. The food is very traditional, which is why you can get a similar meal all over Jersey City for about the same price. I prefer going here because they have some parking, which is always at a premium in Jersey City these days, and the vast selection of desserts in the bakery. I was called for jury duty and decided to go to my good friend Yelp to help me decide on where to eat for lunch. This place had pretty decent reviews so I decided to give it a try.... My initial reaction was that this place has poor customer service. I was literally waiting in line and the counter person finished the transaction with the person in front of me and then walked away to go sit down to eat. I'm like hello... I'm 5'8 and pretty hard to miss, no explanation or anything. I looked at her table where 2 other employees were enjoying their lunch and completely ignored me. I thought to leave but I caught that eye of another employee behind of the hot food counter and she helped me, she was quite pleasant. I ordered the adobo pork with fried rice and okra. The pork was very tender and tasty, the rice was flavorful also, but it included the crunchy bottom of the pot rice that I do not like. Even at home I throw it away and didn't expect that little "treat" to be included in my rice. The okra were tasty, different from how I've tasted it before, but I liked it. In the meanwhile, several kids came in to have lunch, a school must be in the area. However, this table full of employees made no effort to quickly finish their food to allow patrons to sit and enjoy their meal. I noticed an elderly couple holding their tray of food with nowhere to sit and not a motion made by the employees to get up. I quickly finished drinking my Thai bubble tea and offered them to take my table and they gratefully accepted. If you decide to go to this spot, it is connected to a bakery, so here are the ordering instructions: If you want hot food, go directly to the hot food counter to place your order, get a tray and put your food on it and then go to the cashier to pay and then you can get a seat, unless of course it's lunch time and the employees decide to take a break and it's lunchtime for the kiddos in the area. It's alright. The price is cheap so you shouldn't expect much. I was disappointed because the food was very oily, it could have been better with presentation (food was spilling over the styrofoam cup - not an IG-worthy photo), and the staff was distracted - almost not friendly. I wish they leveled up the carinderia experience but sadly, did not. :( read more
