Summary: Melissa's is a Barbershop run by, as far as I can tell, one lady by the name of Melissa…read more To clarify, this is a Barbershop and not what would be considered a Salon. Price: I don't remember exactly how much my haircut was, but I think it was about $12. I remember getting a student discount. I'm not a student, but look young. I returned the money I saved in form of a tip because I felt guilty. Experience: I like to think I'm not too picky when it comes to hair cuts, but I am actually quite picky in choosing a place to get it cut at. For example, Supreme Cuts down the street seems like a really chill and hip place to get your hair cut, but the main type of cuts they do are close cuts and shaves. My hair is medium length and I like it shaved on the sides and clippered on top. Melissa's seemed to be more appropriate and more familiar, so that's why I came here. The first time I went in I was asked what number I wanted. The only thing I've ever ordered by number before are combo meals from fast food restaurants, so I was a bit confused. Luckily, Melissa explained what she meant and worked with me to get a cut I wanted. The cut I walked out with much shorter than I had ever had before, but it was darn comfortable! Quality of cut alone, I'd give it a 5. Why not a 5 then?: The atmosphere of this place is not really my cup of tea. I'm a quiet person that has an aversion to loud talking and politics. Both times I came here, Melissa gets talking with some of the regulars (who by the way, she seems to have a lot of and people seem to love her), and she really lets out what's on her mind. This can come out in the form of expletives, opinionated discussions, and general conversation. One time I think the counter on the "f word" probably went over 50. I'm not against swearing and the discussion was never distasteful, but I'd rather sit there and make quiet smalltalk. I'm not sure it's fair to take a star away for what is all-in-all a fantastic haircut, but it's enough to make me slightly uncomfortable. Overall: Great cut with a lively environment. Not the kind of environment that's right for me, but lots of her regulars seem to enjoy the place. Weird hours caused me to head to Redken in Canandaigua today and that was more my style and atmosphere. Although I will say that the haircuts from Melissa's are probably some of the best I've ever had.

Very highest quality haircut. Super professional…read more Not a real Barber shop in that they are now heavily reliant on appointments. You can go in the shop and see two people ahead of you and think you are good. Then you realize that half the barbers are only taking appointments and the other two are taking walk-ins that signed up on the computer as indirect appointments for the next available barber and then left the shop to come back in an hour. So they are extremely busy all the time and walk-ins are a thing of the past. If you want to build your day around a very good haircut, they are excellent. They used to be walk-in and cash only. Take a number and wait. If it was crowded then maybe you stayed or came back another time. Now, you have to login to a computer, give your name and number and select from who is available for service and THEN it will tell you the wait time and schedule your appointment. Maybe. The computer is not prominently displayed, so you just have to know where it is and how to use it. All of the excellent barbers are attending their clients or studiously avoiding your gaze, so you are left to your own devices to get in the system. The place has always been busy and used the first in first out system. I am not sure what problem this system solved, but I saw several clients coming in and not knowing what was going on because it was literally an iPad laying on a counter near the now-empty number machine. It's now a hair salon that cosplays as a traditional barber shop, albeit a salon that gives a great haircut.

This is 2023 and Narrative Space is now almost exclusively a barber shop (they don't sell boots and…read moreshirts anymore). I looked online for a hair-cutting place that did both men and women (I am a woman). I didn't want a fancy-looking salon. Narrative has a lovely, old-fashioned look and feel. Their web site said their prices were $40, $45, or $50.00. MUCH too expensive, but I realized I was paying for ambience. My barber was Michael Clark. (One got whoever was free when you arrived.) I showed him 2 sets of drawings of the cut I wanted (front and profiles, the difference between the 2 sets being where I wanted the main curve to be: a little higher or a little lower. To begin with the outcome: The drawings clearly showed that the hair should be even with my chin. It ended up, in fact, 2 inches too short...... just below my ears. The cutting experience was very weird. On 4 occasions, he grabbed the hair at the very top of my head and repeatedly pulled it up and down, as if he were washing something on a scrub board. I don't know what on earth that was about. The way he was separating strands and cutting was quite baffling to me. There seemed to be no organization to it. Unfortunately, I was unaware of how short it was getting. I was focusing on it covering my ears. At the end, it didn't even fall nicely and I had to do some repairs when I went home. Unfortunately it was too short to do all the repairs it needed. He had paid no attention to my drawings or instructions. I knew what the price was before I sat down in the chair. This is embarrassing. I paid $70.00 for this cut.
