Sometimes described as Portland's "art house theatre", The Nickelodeon is a cozy six screen cinema located in the heart of the Old Port. One of Portland's treasures, the Nick has been operating in the Old Port for over 40 years, and screens mainstream indie films as well as current blockbusters. Surrounded by the best restaurants and cafés Portland has to offer, it's super easy to park and combine a dinner and a movie. The garage next door is a sure thing if you're not into street parking, just know it's closed on Sundays. I probably see a dozen or so films a year at The Nick--I like to see all of the Academy Award nominated films, and this is the place to catch all of the best picture nominees. In the past few weeks I've seen I'm Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Brutalist at the Nick. A great experience every time--I've walked right up to buy tickets with only one party or two parties in line, at most. The selection concessions offered is reasonable, and includes vegan options. Seats are comfortable, however, they aren't the giant recliners offered at the big corporate cineplexes. Also, you can buy tickets in advance, but you are not able to reserve a particular seat. This is a old school sort of cinema, and yes, the bathrooms are upstairs. They are clean, and you can say hello to Audrey Hepburn on the large Breakfast at Tiffany's poster on your way down the stairs. People really seem to enjoy $6 ticket Tuesdays. Otherwise, tickets are $10 for a matinee and $13 for an evening ticket, less for children and seniors. The Nickelodeon is one of my favorite places in Portland, one of the few institutions that's managed to stand the test of time, and I hope it is able to stay around for another 40 plus years. read more

Tuesday nights are usually when I pay The Nick a visit as tickets are half off brining your total to $7.75 after tax. With today's climbing cinema costs I appreciate The Nicks dedication to remaining affordable. On Tuesday we enjoyed a large butter popcorn, cherry coke and watched Megalopolis which we do not recommend. Might be top 10 of the worst movies ever made. read more

Horrible movie theater. Of course with all the rain everyone wanted to go to the movies today. I purchased our tickets on Fandango. When we arrived there was one line for purchasing tickets and scanning tickets. It took too long. Then we finally got into the theater only to discover that the air conditioning was not working. The theater was also filthy. The conditions were so bad that we decide to leave before the movie even started. I would not recommend this theater. read more

Caught a flick this evening and it was a very pleasant experience. The staff at the concession slash box office were very nice. The sound and picture quality was good. The theater itself was small - I guess the euphemism is cozy, but I did find it cozy. I think I prefer this style to a massive multiplex theater. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the Nickelodeon. To me, it sort of embodies Portland's indie, homey spirit of old (I'll echo what others have said: this is one of the few spots remaining in Portland that still has that small-town vibe to it - it makes me nostalgic for the Portland I originally fell in love with 'lo those many years ago). It's darker than other theaters, it's got a certain charm because of it's older architecture and aesthetics, they're far more relaxed then most other cinemas as they don't really mind if you bring in food from the outside (which is always kind of nice!), it ALWAYS smells good, it's a warm place to go in the winter and a cold place to go in the summer, they sell vegan cookies and coffee!, and they show a really diverse variety of movies including blockbusters, documentaries, silent and foreign films, locally-made ones, etc. If you're looking for something newer, more modern, more fancy, with big giant recliners and loads of amenties... this might not be for you. But if you've got an old soul, like the idea of stepping back in time a bit, and can appreciate simplicity... it's hard not to fall just a little in love with this place. read more

Had a really good experience here. Had some time to kill and I decided to watch Dune for a second time. The theater was nice, simple, and clean, and the staff was really friendly. I was waiting for a pickup and the staff pointed out an out-of-the-way spot where I could wait inside. It seems they have daily specials and matinee showings. I'd definitely come back! read more

What a wonderful little cinema. I love that the Nick shows both major blockbusters and lesser-known indie films. I also love that on Tuesdays tickets are $5. I also love that their popcorn is super buttery, the staff is super friendly, and that each screen and theater is cozy and warm. It's definitely all got an old school vibe; that's what I love about it. Bathrooms are up the stairs - check out the fun Audrey Hepburn poster - and thankfully there are several stalls so you never have to worry about waiting and missing parts of your movie. This is the kind of theater where you come for a date night, or a solo matinee - either way, the staff is willing to chat with you about movies, give you suggestions/recommendations, and wish you a good rest of day. Recently, i've taken to heading out to the theaters with the reclining seats when catching a movie. Yesterday, I ended up at the Nickelodeon and realized there were some very real reasons that set them apart from the fancier theaters in very positive ways and wanted to give the Nick and their staff some love. 1. Location. No other movie theater in the area is placed in such an excellent location. You can walk for coffee, food or fun before or after your movie. 2. Parking. You might be doubting this one. The other theaters all have gigantic and free parking lots. The Nick validates parking stubs at the adjoining garage. $3 for five hours of parking is actually a SWEET deal for this part of town, and most movies are short enough that this will leave you time to catch dinner or a drink as well. 3. Selection. This theater is definitely FAR more likely than any other in the area to include a few more interesting indie choices in the mix. Thank you! 4. Staff. Very friendly and always willing to talk movies. The seating isn't that uncomfortable and they have $5 movies all day on Tuesday! Suggestions: The concession stand could use a major overhaul! Maybe start offering more local treats like Holy Donuts or bags of Little Lads?? Also, stay away from the White Castle burgers. Although they can be a crazy great indulgence, $5 for 2 is just plain crazy! read more

My husband and I were looking for a decent time for a movie and found the Nickelodeon had the perfect time. We arrived a few minutes late to the movie due to parking and grabbing our snacks for the show. The theater was packed with limited seats remaining. We slid into two seats at the back of the room to not disturb the other viewers. The seats were horrid! We literally felt like we were almost on the floor!! The movie was great, snacks wonderful, service from staff great and friendly and environment clean and neat. Not good seats for a 2.5 hour movie though. The Nick is great-I love it! The Nick is really supportive of the local film scene, if that wasn't enough they also have $5 Tuesdays. I've been to a number of film fests there and it's always my favorite venue. The staff is fun, they recognize you and you will feel welcomed and at home. I come to Maine a few times a year. During this time I might see 4-5 movies depending on what is playing. Why? It is sooo cheap! 6 bucks before 6pm everyday, 5 dollars all day on tuesday and 6 bucks after 6 for college id on thursday ( yes I am 32 and still have a college id sue me). The concessions are even cheap. The popcorn is delish and so is the buttery topping. They often have a good mix of art house and blockbusters. If you aren't feeling regular concession stuff, cvs is up on congress and my personal have old port candy co. is on fore street. They are super cool about you waltzing in with huge dunkin donuts iced tea btw. The only minus, its freezing in winter and summer. read more

Not too shabby! While it isn't your big city megaplex with reclining seats and hot fresh food coming out all the time, how can you say no to $5 Tuesdays?? Easy answer, you can't! With the $5 or so that I save compared to most other theaters, I can do the following: - contribute to my nonexistent savings account - buy a large popcorn all for myself, and season with the complementary seasonings - go next door and get a bubble milk tea from BubbleMaineia (sp?) While you're not supposed to bring giant meals in, the wonderful ticket sales people that I have run into have always been nice about letting me finish my drink inside. Two thumbs up! read more

Okay so most of the reviews tell you that the servioce is pretty poor, the seats are a bit uncomfortable and the screen has a grainy hue to it overall but what do you expect when you are paying 5 dollars all day on Tuesdays and 6 dollar matinees. I took my son to see Madagascar 3 at a normal theater and yeah, the ambience was nice and comfortable, but it cost us over 50 dollars for the two of us ... IN A MATINEE!!! So, dont expect a wow kind of experience and also, if you have to go to the bathroom, you might want to go when the movie is still playing and not wait until it ends because the line is about 15 deep to go. This cinema has definitely been around awhile. It most certainly has a nostalgic feel to it. I was in town and had been wanting to see Bohemian Rhapsody and chose the Nickelodeon to come view it. Prices here are reasonable. Between my small popcorn and ticket I spent less than $15. A small popcorn is more than plenty for a couple of people to share, the bag they serve you in is rather large. The cinema could definitely use a little remodeling as some of the insulation was falling out of the ceiling in the actual theater. The seats are comfy enough to sit and enjoy a 2.5 hr flick. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Screen was nice and clear and sound quality was great! read more

The cinema world is actively changing, and the recent trend is that cinemas are providing patrons with reclining chairs and comfy leather seats. However, there is something to be said about historical cinemas that are keeping the charm and aesthetic that they have established for years. Nickelodeon cinemas is one of those historical theaters that has maintained it's charm. The theaters are smaller and the seats are somewhat old, and the venue is definitely darker and dim, however, I genuinely feel like these characteristics add to the rustic and historic charm of Nickelodeon. One of my favorite things about Nickelodeon is that they are one of the limited places in Maine that show many indie movies, or even some local movies. This is something that I greatly appreciate, as if it weren't for Nickelodeon, I would have to travel to Boston or other metropolitan areas to see an indie movie. read more

Love the nostalgia of the Nic. The theatre is NOT fancy-in fact, it is practically falling down around you, the seats are oldish, and the screen quality & sound are not superior. What it is: the place for independent films, a great dinner and movie date in-town, friendly staff, $5 night on Tuesday's cannot compete with any other entertainment in any city in Maine. Stay away from the popcorn -trust me. It's awful. Go see the independent and one-run shows they offer. Super cute theater tucked into Portland's bustling metropolis. While the young man that was suppose to open the theater was late to work keeping a swarm of people outside in the swirling beginnings of a snow storm, our mood was quickly brightened by the welcoming homey feeling in the lobby. Low ceilings and dim lights enveloped us into a better world. The theater was small and warm, and had cozy seats. A group of us piled into two rows in the middle of the theater. While I may not be young and love loud music, I do believe when they turned on the movie that it could have been a smidge but quieter. One of my younger friends commented on it too so I know I'm not a cranky old bitty..yet. Overall, wonderful theater and would gladly come back! read more

I don't know about you, but the Nickelodeon Cinema makes me quite nostalgic. Do you recall the days when a movie ticket didn't cost ten dollars? When you could get a soda AND a large bag of popcorn without emptying out your wallet? Stepping inside the Nickelodeon is like taking a step back in time. Oh, did I mention it's in walking distance from most hot spots in Portland? Sure, sure, you can't expect to be blown away by a 500-seat theatre, with sound that rings in your ears and a screen so big you can't see it all without whipping your head around. However, the Nickelodeon provides gives you that good old-fashioned "let's go see a movie and be able to have money left over" feeling. Because of the $5 Tuesdays and the $6.75 bargain matinee I will give this theater 5 starsbecause of the 5 dollar tuesdays and in the 6 dollars 75 cents bargain matinee I will give the theater 5 stars otherwise I probably would've gone for 4. Maybe I'm spoiled being from San Francisco and having an entire candy store at every theater you know the kind where you get a bag and then you go from bin to bin and put in the different types of candy that you like as much as you want of each.. Nachos hot dogs pretzels and of course ice cream sundae is a milkshake and an espresso bar so I have to admit that I was a little underwhelmed by the concession stand but the service was far better then I would experience back home. And also it is nice not having to pay $12 tickets and $10 matinees. The $3 parking is pretty awesome too don't forget to validate your ticket. A great little theatre, right in the heart of Portland. In fact, Portland would not be the same without it and it's various incarnations (anyone else remember $1 Tuesdays from the early 2000s?). This place has always been my favorite theatre in the area, and it always seems to get the kinda movies that I want to watch. I've even seen one of my friends get married here! Portland no longer has an art house cinema. The Movies on Exchange closed, which is unfortunate. For all the blather about Portland's culture, this isn't blot on the city. With The Movies on Exchange relegated to the city's past, the Nickelodeon is the last vestige of what movie-going should be. F*ck Netflix and Amazon, movies were meant to be watched on the big screen, in the dark, with someone you love. That experience can't be duplicated in your living room, even with your mega flat screen, and it sure as hell can't be replicated from your crappy digital device, no matter how many pixels you have. While certainly not the Bijou, or other big city movie palaces of yore, it still fits the bill for anyone willing to get up off the couch and see movies as they were originally intended. I like that parking is next door, and you don't even need to venture out into the elements (save for a 50 yard walk from garage to NIckelodeon front door. We hit the late afternoon matinee for "Selma" and it was half full. Maine winters are long and harsh, and Saturday afternoon matinees help take some of the sting out of the longest, darkest season of the year for me and my better half. A movie, with an apres-movie drink and appetizers mixed in makes for a fun winter outing, too. read more

Being a former Cambridge MA resident I hold a spot in my heart for the tiny Church Street movie theatre and this place fills that void. The theaters are small but comfortable and they are clean. I never feel like I'm straining my neck or crowded in with a bunch of other movie-goers. The space allows a viewer to get sucked into the show. The prices are also good. Having mostly frequented matinees, $6 does the trick and the movie selection is always good. They've got the latest release or sometimes an independent film. The location is also key to the equation. Perfect for the walking tourist or citizen, one can enjoy lunch in the Old Port and catch a show, or do some shopping and get a movie in before dinner. I will certainly be keeping this location as my Portland movie destination. read more

They employ a rag tag crew of funny, friendly staff that aren't beaten down by the corporate machine. Nickelodeon Cinemas has to be my favorite place to go to the movies, in the Portland area. Being sort of a city girl I like the location of the Nickelodeon, and how close it is to restaurants and bars - making it easy to do dinner and a movie or a movie and drinks! I almost always check the Nick's schedule first if I'm looking for a specific movie that I know is in theaters. They do have a limited selection but you avoid the mega-mall theater kind of vibe and the Nick sometimes has indie / off-beat movies you can't find at other theaters here in Portland. I usually park at the garage right next door because they validate parking and it's only $3 cash, which is a pretty good deal - unless you luck out with a street spot nearby. Tuesday nights all movies are $5 and it's the best! I heard that the Nick dealt with some cleanliness issues in the past but I haven't had a sour experience yet so don't turn you nose up at the Nick movie goers. I like the more intimate experience I have at the Nick with the smaller theaters versus the larger cinemas in town. Everyone even clapped at the Hunger Games last weekend - which I haven't experienced since seeing a movie in theaters in London! Nickelodeon, stay classy. read more

Ive had some issues here... Today, in the theater that mockingjay is playing, it smells like POOP, or maybe someone threw up? Employees here are great, but they arent empowered to do anything. Was once here for a movie and they refused to turn off the house lights- movie was dark, so it was very hard to see. Every so often, its not nasty, and i continue to come for convenience and price- but only ocassionally. read more

I went there on a Tuesday and enjoyed their $5 Tuesday special (what a great price!). The staff there was very friendly, and it wasn't too packed. However, the snack options were a bit limited to the most standard movie theater selection. If you are looking for ice cream, gourmet coffee, locally-baked goods, pick n' mix candy, sweet flavored popcorn, you unfortunately won't them here. All in all, a good place to watch a movie. Resolved this incident with the staff attendant after repeatedly explaining our position. Despite having tickets we were suspected of 'sneaking in' Clearly management needs to step up and take responsibility. Spend some money to clean this place, hire more staff, provide staff support and training for decent customer service, and improve the process for selling and checking tickets. Apparently, despite having tickets, my wife was expected to wait in a line of 15 people at the ticket counter to explain that she was not 'sneaking in' and THEN proceed to the lobby. Till then, customers will continue to be stopped and reprimanded for suspicion of 'sneaking in'. Avoid this...Cinemagic awaits... read more

The Nickelodeon used to be a cheap second run theater in the late 80's and early 90's. It is far from that now, gone are the old clunky seats, worn carpets and $1 Tuesdays. I sorta miss those days, but it really is the only place to see a movie downtown and it certainly could be worse! Films tend to be on the artsy side and are new releases. Seats are comfortable and prices are reasonable. Don't expect stadium seating or imax though! read more
