I took a few days off and bunch of friends and I drove up to Whistler. The plan was to play a few high end golf courses, bike a bit, and in general chill for a few days. The first course we ended up playing was Nicklaus North Golf Course. Everything here is top rate! When you drive up you are greeted and someone looks after your golf clubs. The pro shop guys have a friendly disposition, and readily engage with customers. We got to the course a bit early so we had lots of time to go to the range and warm up. The range is a bit small but it allows one to work on all facets of the game... driving, iron play, chipping and putting. Unfortunately, my game did not improve because of the warm up! The golf course itself was in immaculate condition! I don't know if there is a water restriction in Whistler, but the fairways and greens had a lush green hue! The mountain and water views on the course are nothing short of spectacular! My average photography skills do not do this golf course justice. I have to say it was not the best conditions to play golf. I've played this course a few times and I kept telling people this is an easy course! The Golf Gods punished me for my brash and boastful nature today! There was a strong unpredictable wind and it was difficult to really gauge distances. I shot 45 in the front and than had a clusterF#&k of a back 9 and shot 51. I was disappointed with my 96, but I guess that's golf.... you're always thinking you can do better... I think the green fee is a bit pricy... (north of $150 range), but if you only play this beautiful course once or twice a year you are treated to some of the most beautiful views you can find on any B.C. golf course.

I didn't play well here but still I consider this to be an easy course. The fairways are wide and forgiving. If you can (and that's a big IF for me!) keep your drive relatively straight, you can pretty much pin back your ears and wale away! I like Whistler golf course. Right in the heart of the Whistler area this course stands as a testament to man's desire to be perfect! Easy as it is we still can't play the perfect game! In golf the goal is to minimize and mitigate your errors... even on an easy course like Whistler golfer have to manage their mistakes. The course was in excellent shape. The fairways were green and flowing. The greens were a bit on the hard side (or maybe it's that I don't have a high trajectory on my balls), I couldn't keep too many approach shots on the putting surface. The bunkers were excellent. As my friend said... 'it's nice to know when you pay over $100 for the green fee there is sand in the bunkers!' Haha! Whistler golf course is very flat and walkable. I was lazy and carted but on a nice day it's a perfect walk in the park. I recommend Whistler Golf Course to all golf lovers. It's a beauty and a joy to play!

We rented our snowshoes from the main lodge, which also had cross country ski rentals (apparently 90km of cross country trails, whatever that is in miles), snowboards, tobogganing, and so many more wintery things that are completely separate from my understanding of normal outdoor activities. I mean, where else can you find biathlon lessons? Obviously the surrounding area is gorgeous in winter, a wonderland of quiet white stillness, forests and forests of evergreens, and creek beds lined with powdery snow and ice. There are frequent signs and maps to keep you oriented along the snowshoeing trails, which was great for us noobs. You can do anything from short out-and-back trips to several miles of strenuous trails. One star docked because I thought the snowshoes were pretty pricey for a rental - a flat rate of $16 regardless of the time you spend with them. They definitely did not seem to be in high demand either as there were dozens of pairs behind the register. Maybe instead do an hourly rate instead? This is in addition to a per-person entry fee to the park. Also, some of the cross county skiers were surprisingly rude when we stepped on their track - I get we were in the wrong, but have a little grace and chill out just a bit.

It's a trek to get there, even after you park, but so worth it. We started with 9 of the "bottom" 18 so we could stay close to the trail when it started pouring. Heard the upper 9 are incredible, fun to throw downhill a stretch. On those we did it could often be tricky to find the basket behind the course's rolling rock hills and swaths of trees. Inevitably someone would see the next basket or tonal and paths were well laid to follow through to the next launch pad.

The holes cover varied terrain, and most of them have a long and short distance to the hole (if you really want more challenge). I didn't find it difficult to move from hole to hole, as there are arrows pointing in the correct direction, and maps of each hole at the start. There's a porta-potty at the halfway point of the course, and some maps scattered throughout. Overall this is a really fun course, and I'm glad I made time to visit while on vacation. I'm taking off a star because the course itself was super difficult to find. We wandered on foot from the Valley Trail for a while, and found one sign that led to a fork with no further direction. We didn't fare much better in a vehicle, and ended up parking in a random lot. I saw a sign in some of the trails that was pointing to "Disc Golf Parking" but there were no signs when driving in by car.

There are a plethora of bike shops around the Whistler area, and when you search online, this is…read moreone of the more recommended shops due to it being one of the few local, independent shops still around. I'm all for supporting local, but this shop has proved why large conglomerates are able to take over areas so easily. Being a small, independent shop doesn't mean you can get away with providing shoddy services and rude attitudes to your customers, as this place does. I rented a V10 here to ride at the bike park earlier in the summer, and I thought I was being pranked with how poorly tuned the bike was for my weight and size. It's as if they tuned it for a 300+ lb bodybuilder. I inputted my weight (140lbs) and height on the registration sheet, and it seemed to be completely ignored. I get that bike parks are extremely rough on the bikes, but practically maxing out the suspension and tire pressure will do nothing but provide an extremely poor rider experience and also risk injury. Maybe that's the strategy: wear out the riders by practically giving them no suspension so they ride less, resulting in less wear and tear on the bike? I consider myself an advanced rider, and as I did my first run down Crank It Up, I couldn't help but wonder if riding down cobblestones in Paris Roubaix on a tireless road bike would've offered a smoother experience as I was getting absolutely beaten to shreds on the bike. My buddy, a former bike shop mechanic, tinkered around with the tire pressure and so on before we brought it back to the shop to get the bike further adjusted. We were introduced to the presumably lead mechanic, the older Australian gentleman. As we explained the situation and what we did, he began to talk down to us for tinkering with the bike because we could have done some irreparable damage. I get that there are people who foolishly think they know more than they do, but I can't even wrap my head around how much damage we could have done taking air out of the tire or adjusting the compression on the fork. We had a four-day rental and brought the bike back four times within the first two days (not including the returns where we voiced our thoughts) with the same exact complaint before the Australian mechanic seemed fed up with us and decided to check out the suspension, only for them to realize that the bike had a completely damaged suspension and that it needed to be replaced. When you're paying more than $200 a day for a rental, you expect some level of service and functionality from the tool that you're using. Unfortunately, that was not the case for me. Despite all of the "adjustments" that were made, I felt like I was cosplaying as a first-day jackhammer operator riding that bike. My forearms and hands were absolutely beat because of the lack of a working suspension system, and I was mentally drained from the dread I endured knowing I would have to go back to the shop each time for adjustments and endure a condescending interaction with the mechanic. I'm sure the bike shop deals with beginners all the time who have a hard time conveying their experiences or blame the bike for their fatigue when, in reality, it is the physical nature of the sport. However, I ride multiple times a week, have no issues riding some of the more technical parts of the mountain, and conveyed this information to the bike shop, expecting them to be a bit more sympathetic and provide even a baseline level of customer service. Unfortunately, that was not the case. There were several other bike shops that my buddy and I stopped by within the Whistler Village that treated us better than Evolution, despite them being conglomerate-owned. I'm all for supporting local, but I can't in good conscience recommend this place, especially to beginners. With the way they set their bikes up, someone can seriously get injured or worse. If you receive even double the service I did, you'd leave disappointed and feel like your money was wasted. This bike shop is sadly an extremely poor steward of the sport and strongly highlights the negative, pompous attitude of biking culture.
