There is seating at a counter running around the cooking area in the middle of the restaurant. They also do lots of orders for pick-up. It's fast as lightening as well. Everything is cooked right in front of you and is ready in just a couple of minutes. However, as the sign says, it's hamburgers - but they are great. Been a while since I've been to Nick's so stopped in with the family on the way out of Brookings. Great tasting burgers but that's about it. No highchairs or kid friendly seating. In fact one of the employees seemed a little unhappy that we would bring our kid to their establishment. Burger to bun ratio is poor. A 2oz patty on a bun that just enveloped the patty. Expensive. Here's a rundown of the prices: 2oz hamburger $1.59 Double 2oz $2.99 Cheese + $0.40 We had 6 between the three of us, a bag of chips, and one *glass* of soda and it was almost $14 and both of us adults were still hungry. For your buck, I think there's more filling options out there. The burgers tasted good, but flavor doesn't make up for the premium in cost. I think last time I was there they were $1/ea which goes with their slogan "Buy 'em by the bag". Oh. And the creepy blonde hair guy, please stop trying to pull off the "olde tyme burger joint" character. Seriously you were freakin' my wife out and it's just weird. read more

Absolutely my favorite place to eat in Brookings for lunch. Friendly staff. Awesome food.

The burgers taste great, but sanitation is a concern. The staff placing the condiments on the burgers did not have an apron covering her shirt. When she would reach over the burgers to get the condiments, her shirt fell across the food. I hope she had not, for example, rode bike to work and worked up a sweat, or cuddled with her dog or cat, before working with my food. I would not eat there again only for this reason...not sanitary. read more

Tiny, delicious burgers. Order at least two or three. Very simple philosophy: nothing on the menu but burgers, chips, pie and something to drink. I recommend three (with cheese and ketchup), a bag of plain chips, and a coke. Sounds simple, but it's a wonderful throwback to the "Golden Days" of good old fashioned mom 'n pop soda fountain shops. It really is as good as everybody says. A bit pricy, but the food is delicious enough to warrant paying a bit more. Try it -- you won't be disappointed. read more

Just drove over 230 miles for my favorite burgers at Nick's. The price is currently $ 2.00 each. That is over the hill for me. The burgers seemed smaller than I had on my last visit. $2.00 is beyond reality for ~2 ounces of meat I probably drove past several good hamburger shops on the way. No more Nick's for me. I used to go to Nick's as a kid with my Dad 40 years ago, when the place was half the size it is now. I take my kid there now. I think the prices are a tad high for a simple burger (I always just get a burger with onions, nothing else) but they do it quickly and deliciously. Beef and bread are always fresh. Nick's hamburgers are easily some of the most quality in town. The one downside is that they are a bit expensive but they have a reputable name so they are able to do this. If you are new to Brookings I suggest you overpay and enjoy the most quality burger in the area. They also have phenomenal breakfast burgers. MMM read more

The atmosphere and history of this place are the real draws but burgers at Cubby's are better and for what you pay you have a small portion of food. I have been eating Nick's burgers since 1965 when my Mother in law, Fern Borstad (RIP) took me there for the first time. Every visit to Brookings over the years has included a couple stops at Nick's for those wonderful burgers. I am a hamburger lover and rate Nick's as "None better". We live in Northern Wisconsin, so Nick's is just 560 miles away. We have Nick's shirts and sweat shirts, and have met many folks in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan that have been to Nick's and recognized the logo. Now that I am thinking of them, I better plan a Brookings trip soon. read more

Best burgers ever. If you are within 100 miles of Brookings head for Nick's. You'll never regret it. The last time I was there a woman called from the Denver airport on her way to Sioux Falls. She was concerned that they'd be closing before she could make the 90 mile drive.
