Given that I live basically next door to Nighthawks, I'm ashamed it's taken me this long to review them. They've become my partner's and my go-to spot for an impromptu date night, and our place to duck into with our friends when we want a cocktail but don't want to walk the whole three blocks to the Shop. The menu has a wild array of offerings, all featuring locally sourced ingredients, but I admit many of them have seemed a bit too wild for me-- I like good food, but when I have to google half the ingredients in a dish, I'm not likely to take the chance on ordering it. But Nighthawks has me hooked-- on their fries, their burgers, and oh lawd, their brunch. We finally made it over to brunch a couple weeks ago, and I summarily devoured a biscuit sandwich with house made sausage, pear puree, and house made American cheese. Add a cider mimosa on the side, and if I hadn't had to work that afternoon, I'd have sat there all day just waiting to get hungry again. The burgers and fries are top notch too-- the patties are flat and have a gorgeous char on the outside, and the fries are skinny shoestrings fried to crispy perfection. They can add as many crazy things to their menu as they want-- as long as the burgers and the brunch remain, they'll keep my business in perpetuity. read more

tldr false inclusive atmosphere, poor staff communication, didn't receive full order. i think these guys are racist. ordered 2 drinks and calamari, somehow we got the wrong dish. server looked at us blank faced when he noticed. said he'd go put in the correct order, didn't. quite literally just came back and offered the bill. we took his offer cus dudes energy and service were almost comically bad and we had actually had stuff to do afterward. as two darkskin black fems we were pretty aware of the fact that everyone with lighter skin than us received excellent service (or at least complete) service. hostess with purple glasses was very sweet tho. gave us the table we wanted without insistence. so kind! read more

I really, really wanted to like it. I had read great reviews, and this region is desperate for more places that are worth spending money out on. The space is cute, the waiter was friendly, the drink selections exciting. The weakness is--the food. The fries were limp, lukewarm and not salted, and the veggie burger completely lacked structural integrity and wasn't particularly tasty. The delicious cheese on the burger was a saving grace, but not enough to redeem the whole experience. Unfortunately, we won't be going back. read more

Wow! Went to the bank and then wanted to go out to the market. While walking to the market I passed this place. The menu had vegan options which is great... It also had bottomless mimosas for 20 dollars!?! What!!!?? The food was so high end I couldn't believe it was coming out of this cute little cafe. The decor is a very jazzy New Orleans feel. My server Amanda was a pleasant and attentive person and all around lovely. I'm honestly blown away at this little hole in the wall. I think this may be my new Saturday tradition. So I had a Thursday off and planned an epic day that included getting back on my local handmade veggie burger wagon. Lucky for me nighthawks opens at noon and on Wednesday and Thursday have a burger fries and mystery beer special. I don't need to tell you all that beer in the middle of a day in the middle of the week with a burger is a magical experience. They have outdoor seating, no indoor and pickup is a breeze. The fries are 1990s McDonald's era flavor (though with a pinch more salt than I prefer) and the veggie burger. Made with as far as I could tell mostly pinto beans, the bun (toasted or grilled with butter) tried mostly to hold this monster together inside. Spoiler alert it failed. The cheese also tried to hold it together and actually there may have been a bit too much cheese. Or the burger size cause a lot to leak out. The accoutrements though are where it's at. Flavor wise everyone should get this with carmelized onions. The pickles and the special sauce go amazing with the burger flavor. Texture is similar to a burger patty except for the falling apart bit. So far this thing is winning the race. And it's getting tough now. No less than I'd expect for a restaurant that's competed for the NYS beef council for best burger. read more

Josh finally has a new brick and mortar place. After going to several pop ups of his over the last year or so. I was excited to try this new place. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. There were appetizers as well small plates that could be used as apps. The menu has options for all food lifestyles. Vegetarian, Vegan, gluten free as well as meat options There was a nice selection of beers on tap as well as in the cooler. A small but unique and thoughtful wine selection You can choose the type of burger as you will as toppings you want. Hubby got the vegetarian burger. I got the beef burger. My friend who was with us that is vegan as well as gluten free got an Incredible succotash. I ordered the German potato salad as my side. Did not disappoint. Veggie burger with cheese and onions, probably the tastiest, most filling veggie burger Ive ever eaten. Had me closing my eyes and sighing. Came back for a second meal and had turnip "pasta", turnips have no business tasting this good. Im not against meat, mind you, but I love the creativity and skill put into these vegetable dishes. I was led to believe this was a farm to table restaurant with locally sourced beef. We went for burger night. The burgers obviously were patties that are bought frozen in boxes in local grocery stores. The waitress didn't even bother to ask how you wanted them cooked because they were all cooked the same out of the box with a horrible flavor. What a joke but the joke was on us. Nighthawks is a place that seems to be doing simple things pretty well. I'm on the fence between 3-4 stars. But rounding up due to the service and the burger. Service was excellent. Kind. Prompt. Explained to us that they have a fuller menu wed-sat. We were there on a Tuesday so it was a small menu but with a $15 burger deal. It's a burger, fries and a beer for $15. Or soda if you prefer. My cheeseburger was very good. The patty wasn't too thick or too thin. They serve them medium rare but had no problem making mine medium well when I asked. The bun was fluffy yet held up nicely against the burger. The special sauce which is mayo based was good but all four of us who dined there agreed they were too heavy handed with it. The fries were short and fresh cut. I was a big fan of them. They had a chicken sandwich on special which consisted of a chicken thigh in a hot honey sauce with slaw. We found the sauce to be neither hot or sweet and felt the slaw had a fishy taste to it which we did not enjoy. My husband and I have been on a chicken sandwich tour as of late and this one just didn't hold up to the chicken sandwiches of Dove & Dear or Caskade. I would recommend this place for a burger. And I would certainly try them again on a night with a full menu. Waitstaff keep up that kindness and service excellence. You're doing a great job. read more

I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to eat. The waitress started off by saying what wasn't available to order. I ordered some focaccia egg thing and the egg was not fried. It was runny and gross. I also asked for no pickles. Pickles were present. Who serves eggs and pickles?! When my food came back (presumably fixed), it was so smothered in this thick grease-tasting and yet tangy sauce, it was barely edible. It was sloppy and gross and not worth $13. I hope they either seriously overhaul their menu or their chef because this food was gross. read more

These burgers are AWESOME! Whatever sauce they put on is heavenly... just make sure to have plenty of napkins as it can get a bit messy! Staff are nice and friendly. This is probably one of my favorite dining experiences in Troy! I cannot recommend enough! I went in for brunch last Sunday! My waitress, Sarah, was very knowledgeable about the menu and helpful navigating through my dietary concerns! I am dairy free and gluten free, she was able to explain what I could order and the kitchen was able make accommodations. My partner ordered the donut. It was the best donut he has ever had! We rolled into Troy in the evening looking for a good place to sit down and relax, have a drink and dinner. We happened on Nighthawks and found everything we were looking for. Excellent food; we had the escarole salad, fried chicken sandwich, and the regular hamburgers. All was excellent. They have a large drink selection and special requests caused no problem. Went here unplanned before a show at Troy Savings Bank and it was a great accident! They were crowded before the show but accommodated us as walk-ins at the little back bar. Despite being really busy, the service was pleasant, attentive and helpful. Their cocktail menu is very creative - we tried 2 from the menu and both were delicious, high quality and generous. Ordered the Brussels sprouts appetizer to share, so good! I love olives and appreciated how present they were on the menu. Four drinks, an app, and two dinners and our check was under $100! Everything was good, including the atmosphere which is both cozy and fun. I will be returning. read more

Great place and a super addition to the Troy dining scene. The space is intimate and homey--the name, Nighthawks, is a dead-ringer for the Edward Hopper painting (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nighthawks), as well as the Tom Waits LP "Nighthawks at the diner." On to the food and drink! The wine choices were spot-on. My date and I had glasses of a rose that was nice and cold with a bit of a ballsy bite. The super-nice glassware (and healthy pour) didn't hurt, either. The kids had burgers that were superb. I had hot dog scrapple--a variation on the Philly/South Jersey delicacy, amped up with a great mustard and pickled veggies. Date had a veggie burger, which she loved. The concept is great--you've got perennial pub fare menu in one column, and another, weekly locavore farm-to-table menu in another. The salads were farmer's market-fresh, with pickled rhubarb and other goodies. Not for nothing, but the key to a place like this is that they cook what's in season--so no tomatoes, yet, in salads and on burgers, for example, for the time we visited, but yes to spring greens and pickled onions as sides. It's about top-notch ingredients--so it's no Five Guys, if that's what you're looking for. Looking forward to coming again. read more

New favorite restaurant in the region! When I saw that a "farm to table" place was opening up in Troy, I was skeptical, expecting some kind of Brooklyn-style, edison lights and poured concrete place that pretty much sticks to the same overpriced 5 menu items and one super sad meatless dish. Needless to say I was blown away by how original, delicious, and welcoming Nighthawks is. There's a new menu every week with super creative, seasonal items that you'd never think of joining together. Like kohlrabi and camembert, or braised turnips and pimiento. Both of which were equally amazing and unforgettable. (FYI there are burgers and veggie burgers always on the menu for your less adventurous friends and family). The cocktails, wine and beer list are solid as well. Also the decor and general vibe of the place: friendly, warm, and vaguely post-punk. This is the place I'll take out-of-town guests to show off Troy to. read more

I really don't know why people are raving about this place. We just had dinner there and it was the worst meal we ever had. We had the pork shank for 2 and in the food service industry you know it's pretty hard to screw up a pork shank, but they did. Love it! The food and service was wonderful. The bartender was so nice and gave us a tasting of our drinks before ordering. I can't say enough how delicious the food was. I went with my friend on a dreary Sunday really looking forward to what I ordered off of the small but seemingly delicious menu. I ordered an asparagus, ricotta and sourdough open-faced brunch dish. It LOOKED great, but the sourdough was burned. I sent it back. I never do that. I ordered a cheeseburger off of the lunch menu instead, which was never presented to us upon being seated. In addition to being disappointed, we waited for an absurd amount of time to order, meanwhile, multiple tables around us had been served, even though they sat after us. We had to consistently remind our waitress to bring napkins and silverware. There was a sandwich board above the counter that looked like it had really great salads, and when I tried to order one, we were told it was only for dinner. I love food, have worked in many upscale and trendy restaurants both upstate and in NYC. I know food and food service well. I don't think I'm high maintenance, but we left feeling like the whole experience was a total bust. I don't know why people like this place. It bummed me out. Okay bloody marys though. Solid place - I'd describe it as a farm-to-table diner with flair; explained: -farm-to-table: The burger is a good, basic cornerstone of their menu. At $10 it may *appear* expensive for what you get, but when you factor in the upped price for farm-to-table meat as well as home made pickles etc. it's a reasonable asking price. Quite tasty in my opinion - I really liked it. -diner: It has a feel of being run like a diner (how you're seated, how your order is taken, etc), but then... -FLAIR: Their decor/ambiance is really nice - this is a place I would want to hang out for a while. Additionally they have a solid wine/mixed drink list, and being open til midnight they blend that line between restaurant, diner and bar. Which it is more of, I cannot tell, but I know for certain I'll be back. Chef Josh Coletto continues to impress me with the farm to table menu that changes constantly and the creativity behind the dishes they put out. I see a clear French influence with local American ingredients from local producers. Go in with an open mind for dinner time and you will not be disappointed. The boyfriend isn't usually much of a breakfast person, but he had a bite of my sandwich last week and wanted one of his own today. And I tried the brioche sticky buns with maple glaze and mixed candied nuts...oh my, sooo delicious (and the picture does not do the size justice). Also, bubbly orange juice.
