Since we had only a short time there, we wanted to experience as much of the local food culture as possible. As we met and talked with locals, one place kept coming up: Fresh and Wild. So, naturally, we had to check it out. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by a gentleman who I believe was the owner. We then met the chef, a young woman who clearly knows her way around the kitchen, and her brother, who seemed to be the true "Jack of all trades," making sure everything was running smoothly. The chef took our order: Peruvian fish, black beans and rice, along with a sushi roll. And let me tell you... WOW! The food was sooooo good fresh, flavorful and absolutely delicious. My wife and I literally sat there shaking our heads in amazement at how good everything was. To the entire Fresh and Wild family, thank you for making two visitors from California feel right at home while serving up some incredible food. The ice was still frozen and the fish cold. I hoped it was just maybe some fish juices or something on the outside of the vacuum packed bags, ice packs or something inside the box and not the actual fish. Unfortunately, this was not the case. It was the fish that had the fishy odor. I cooked one 1 pound pack and froze the other. It still had a strong fish smell after being cooked and on the plate. This was disappointing because the fish itself tasted great but the smell brought a dish that should have been a 10 down to a 7. This may have been ok if it was salmon, but for sea bass that I'm sure was very expensive, this should not be the case. I don't know what happened but I'm not as excited to eat the frozen 1 pound pack I have left.

A few things about the seafood market - they can't filet or clean your fish for you so it means you need to do it yourself- maybe it's licensed as wholesale or their lease doesn't allow for it. About 1/2 the product is frozen fish but remember they are serving an Asian clientele so many want species not available locally so there is a wide range of fish species from Southeast Asia. The fresh fish is limited to what's seasonal and fresh so variety of fresh fish changes and is larger quantities of a smaller range of fish. Everything is either alive in tanks or presented in ice so I don't follow the review that says things in the floor- Asian customers are very discerning about fish being alive or extremely fresh. Prices are great I have received stone crab in colloidal size for the price of mediums and they were almost 1lb a claw. Live crabs and lobsters are under $10 and usually the fish is fairly priced and below the supermarket prices. Rolling up, it seems this is a market that caters more to commercial clientele, but they are open to the public too, which means you get access to all the goods. Walking in I noticed live seafood tanks that looked specific to fish, but couldn't see anything in them. I'm assuming you just had to ask. In the first case I saw nice looking shrimp and shellfish, and around the corner there were whole fish, including many of my favorites I don't often see for sale. Mutton snapper and hogfish, both around $8/Lb, lion fish at $5, and some lesser known species of grouper and smaller delicate fish as well. This selection is what makes me give them a higher rating. We were there late in the day, and the cases were mostly empty. I assume earlier in the day there's more! It's worth noting the whole fish still had guts in tact, so if you want to buy one you might ask them to clean it for you. We were on the hunt for stone crabs, and when we called they said they had them, but when we got there they were all in the freezer. Freezing shellfish definitely changes them, and not for the better. I can't imagine eating frozen stone crabs. In fact I've never heard of buying stone crabs frozen at all. So we didn't.
