A true hidden gem of the Allentown food scene. Went here the other night and was blown away. My…read moreexperience with African food is pretty limited and I've been meaning to fix that. This was the perfect place to explore the cuisine from the continent. I had the pilau which consisted of rice, beef and veggies. The beef was so tender and the seasoning on the dish was perfect. I also had the chickpea samosas which were wonderful and the freshly made mango pineapple juice was delicious and super refreshing. The restaurant itself is so intimate and the African art all over the wall was fun to look at as we dined. Chef Tina is not only a brilliant cook but a warm and welcoming host too. They could tell it was our first time so they talked us through the menu and made spot-on recommendations. She even saved my meal by stopping me from dumping on her special hot sauce without trying it first. I tested and it was a bit too intense for me but if you love super spicy food then you will be in heaven. A great meal and worth the price I think. Just be sure to bring cash for tip or tell them to add it on before swiping your card. They definitely earn a big one here. Can't wait to go back!!

We had also ordered the homemade pineapple mango juice as well as The fufu & egusi stew. Overall this restaurant was delicious !

This was my final visit to Eatwell African Restaurant. I placed a pickup order and arrived early. I…read morewas told to wait until the scheduled pickup time. That would have been acceptable, except when I returned at the exact time given, I was told to wait an additional five minutes. What is the purpose of scheduling a pickup time if the order is not ready at that time? Customers' time should be respected. This is not an isolated incident. I consistently experience this issue with the same server. The attitude is dismissive and unprofessional. It often feels as though I am inconveniencing her by simply picking up food I have already paid for. The treatment toward women in particular is noticeably unpleasant and uncomfortable. If you arrive with a partner, the energy shifts in a way that feels intentional and inappropriate. Customer service is a choice. The repeated lack of professionalism, courtesy, and respect is unacceptable. Even when the food is decent, the experience overshadows it completely. I did not enjoy my meal because of how I was treated. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this establishment to anyone. Respecting customers' time and providing basic courtesy should not be optional.

The service was good and we appreciated that they had a hand washing station available on the main floor for use. For our appetizers we ordered puff puff which was my personal favorite. It was warm and delicious. We also ordered a scot egg, meat pie and veggie spring rolls which were also good. For our entrees, I went with goat, jollof rice and plantains and both of my friends got fish. One got the red snapper and the other got a white fish which they enjoyed. As far a my meal it was decent but the goat and jollof were more tomato based than I expected. Good flavor but definitely not the best I've had. I also would've liked if the plantains were sweeter. The only issue was that the prices on the menu did not match the prices on our check. They were higher on our check, which can be frustrating if you're expecting to spend a certain amount.

I've been on a quest to get back to the roots and eat some African food! I'm glad that I was able…read moreto eat at Soul of Africa after being highly recommended. Let me start by saying this, do not expect high levels of customer service. When I arrived, they were having some issues with POS system. I waited several mins prior to someone speaking to me and asking to take my order. Nonetheless, the gentleman here was t super talkative but was nice. Okay onto the food. If there one thing to take away from this review: BE CAREFUL WITH THE HIGH SAUCE. This not American high sauce, this shit is no joke. Try a dab before you sprinkle it onto your food or it could potentially ruin your meal. Jallof Rice - I thought it would have been a little bit more flavorful but it was tasty Red Snapper - BOMB! Cooked to perfection I would 100% order again Plantains (not show ) - also delicious. I'd definitely Rec commend and I look forward to going back and trying some other authentic African dishes.

The Cassava leaf soup that I purchased had one piece of hard chicken for the entire small container, too much Palm oil and the spices were overwhelming to make up for being taken advantage of via lack of. I'm pissed, disappointed and I will make it known that the food now sucks, they will nickel and dime you for things that was at one time included like beef, goat meat etc.

When we were toddlers, it was natural to eat with our hands…read more But as soon as we managed to hold a fork and spoon, we were expected to use utensils. As children and adults, using your hands to eat was frowned upon. Fried chicken and a few other dishes were exceptions. Although, to be honest, I'm one of the few people in the world who grew up eating fried chicken with a knife and fork. Let me introduce you to Ethiopian food, where utensils aren't usually used. I guess you could call it a hands on experience. The best way to experience it in central New Jersey is at Dashen Ethiopian Cuisine in New Brunswick. https://www.dashenethiopiannj.com/ Dashen, managed by a husband and wife team - Alemayehu Hailu and Tsigereda Lemlemayehu, also offers a full bar and a big screen TV for sports events. It is a delightful place for a special meal. They also do catering. The meal starts with injera - a spongy, fermented flatbread that is spread over a large serving plate. The other foods are placed on top of this sort of sour dough bread. All of the dishes - meats and vegetables - are well cooked with fragrant sauces. They are served with a pile of folded injera. How do you eat it? You rip off a piece of injera and use it to grab some meats or vegetables or scoop them up. Then you pop it into your mouth. The sourly fermented bread and other dishes make a great combination. Whether you go for meat or vegetables, the keys here are the spices. There's a chicken dish called Doro Wot. It is simmered in a special spice sauce with onions, garlic and ginger. And served with a hard boiled egg. There are dishes of cubed beef and ground beef, and lamb. There's a lamb stew called Yebeg Alicha with onions, garlic, ginger, peppers, turmeric and other spices. The same spices can be applied to a fish fillet, salmon or shrimp. But my favorites are the vegetables. There's Misir Wot, split lentils simmered with special spices, onions, garlic, tomatoes and ginger. Gomen is collard greens with onions, spices, garlic, ginger, tomatoes and jalapenos. Tikal Gomen is cabbage with the same spice combination. Kik Wot is yellow split peas cooked with garlic, ginger, tomatoes and special spices. Dinich Alicha looks like a mixed vegetable plate with potatoes, carrots, string beans, garlic, ginger, tomatoes and spices. The food can be very spicy or quite mild. Talk to your server so you order the dishes that are to your taste. The best way to eat Ethiopian food is on a combination plate. Go with a small group of friends. Have a combination plate of meat dishes. Order another combination plate of vegetarian dishes. That will give you eight to 10 different dishes to sample. Different beans and meats and vegetables. There's a variety of textures and flavors. And eat it slowly. In fact, don't just eat it. Savor it. Really enjoy each delicious taste. Eating Ethiopian food at Dashen is not just a meal. It's an experience. You can get takeout or delivery. But it is so much better in the restaurant. I urge you to get out of your culinary rut and visit Dashen.
