Looking at the reviews before mine, it sure seems like this shop has provided some mixed experiences. I did not know about this shop until very recently (I only went to Maplewood for the first time a few months ago). Before talking about the shop itself, I will say that during my recent visit the staff was very nice (this included two young women and one older one - possibly the owner?). I overheard them having several conversations with customers and they all seemed very familiar and friendly. Of course, this is just my experience, so take that as you will. No. 165 (so named for the building number) is an absolutely adorable, comfortable and whimsical shop in Maplewood. They sell all sorts of items ranging from novelty items, candy, clothes, stationary, dish towels, purses, soaps and more. Everything in the shop is either meant to be charming, beautiful or tongue-in-cheek and I love that combination. Interestingly, I saw a note on the counter that indicated at some point last year this shop was going to close, but a strong reaction from the neighborhood helped the owner to change their mind and keep the shop open. What that meant on a practical level is that during my visit a lot of the shelves were definitely more bare than I think they would normally be. This decision is recent, so I am hoping that means in the next couple months the store will restock and have more to offer than it already has. Usually frequent the shop and I'm happy to visit it, but imagine my surprise when I walk in and see MAGA candies and Trump chocolate bars by the cash register. Maybe in some places, but in Maplewood? Unbelievably tone deaf. Will not shop there again until those are removed. read more

I live down the street and I bought so many gifts and decor for my house. Today I went to the store and said hi and nobody responded, then I got a few items on sale and the owner in a rude tone said she cannot wrap sale gifts (one of them was not on sale) and she did not even offer a bag or something to wrap by myself. I just got a basket for myself and she throw it into a bag in a bad way. I went to the bookstore words to buy a present and they were much nicer. I'm really into small local business and I wish they could be as kind as other stores and give more value to the beautiful downtown. Now I understand bad reviews due to lack of kindness of owner. read more

One and a half stars for the variety and quality of gifts, and one star for the location. Rounding up to three. I really want to love this store, but the staff is so cold. I don't need overly friendly, or even warm, but a little kindness would be appreciated, and I believe would pay off big time. read more

This shop is absolutely adorable and I make it a point to stop in whenever I'm visiting but the one thing that really turns me off is that no one says hello or even bothers to ask if I need assistance. Maplewood Village is quaint and all other stores are very welcoming and the shop owners/associates are friendly. I wish I felt that same vibe when I walked into this store. I'm all for supporting small businesses but only when I feel like my business is appreciated. read more

The buyer has a good eye for unique, high quality goods, particularly accessories. I've likely spent $750 on gifts during my 3 prior visits, all of which have been more than satisfactory in terms of value and service by knowledgeable staff. Today I had the misfortune to meet the owner. As someone else wrote in a review that Yelp has classified as "unrecommended," she was outright rude. Outside of that encounter the place deserves 4 stars, but you won't see me there again. I can get rude for free! read more

Such a fun store in downtown Maplewood. There are fun little gifts and stoking-stuffers that will always make you laugh to your right, home decor to your left, and women's clothing towards the back. May be a tad on the more expensive side, but its always fun to look around anyway! read more

My partner purchased some gifts for me from this store and I absolutely loved the gifts. I couldn't wait to get there to shop. I went there yesterday on 2/13/16 and there were two young ladies and one older Caucasian lady standing behind the counter. As soon as I walked in they stared at me and turned their heads. As I got closer to the counter they still didn't speak until I said "hello" so that they could all hear me. Only the older woman spoke and the other two said nothing, however, everyone else that walked in before me and after me was welcomed into the store. Bad business. I will not go to that store ever. People spend your money across the street at Kokoro. The items at Kokoro is better and the staff is much friendlier. read more

I reviewed a few years ago but wanted to do again. I come from Manhattan just to go to this little store. The gifts are so different and very thoughtful. There are a lot of little trinkets with cheeky sayings, cute houseware and scarves/accessories. I'm sick of giving people gifts from large businesses so this place hits the spot. I will continue coming here for gifts as long as it's open. The owner is absolutely lovely and the staff is very attentive. I had a great experience there today!! read more

This is a perfect little shop in Maplewood's downtown area. It's an ideal place for a last minute gift. 165 has apparel, handbags, jewelry, housewares, gag gifts, gourmet candy and tons more. They carry brands like Budda, Alex & Ani, Blue Q, Fishes Eddy, and Solid Threads. Cool stuff. You'll always find something! read more

This is a great little store with a wide variety of unique gifts (from funny to sentimental) that change from season to season. The atmosphere is warm and eclectic, with its exposed brick wall and high tin ceiling, and a pleasure to linger in, especially in winter when it's cozy and there is complimentary cocoa. The staff is polite and available to help without being all over you like in some stores. In fact if you ask a question they always go out of their way to help you find what you're looking for. The only down side for me is that the clothing selection is pretty small with priced higher than I usually spend on casual clothes. All in all though this shop is a gem and I always leave with a purchase and a smile on my face. read more

One of my favorite stores to grab a gift. They always offer to wrap the smallest, least priced item to the most expensive in the store. They are usually friendly but never have gone out of their way to ask if you need help. The store has lots of good gag gifts as well as nice gifts. Housewarming items, cute jewelry, and scented soaps, lotions, and perfumes are my favorite. read more
