Next there was my uncle in 1998, and my sister in 2010. Now my dear Mother has relocated to heaven and we are using Taylor to prepare Mama, as the services will be at her church. So we met with a truly wonderful and helpful gentleman - Mr. James Sandifer. He was amazingly compassionate and helpful. He walked us through the process, gave advice, communicated with us constantly, and was simply our guide and support through the process. We then spoke with Mr. Allen, who also was extremely kind and compassionate. His role is to oversee the funeral cars. He was very kind and empathetic - truly caring. Then Mr. Townsend, who prepared my Mom. He called yesterday to offer condolences, and to let me know that he finished preparing my Mom earlier than planned. He then told me that she's beautiful. When we arrived today to see my Mom, both Mr. Sandifer and Mr. Townsend were with us and offered tremendous support and compassion. My Mom looks angelic ... perfect. The casket Mr. Sandifer helped us select is perfection - very feminine and ladylike - like Mama. The job they did was in excellence, and they made us feel really special and they cared for my Mom with extra kindness. Thank you all so much ... so very much. You have been there for our family consistently over the years, and you've always done a job that is above and beyond. Thank you so very much ... you have no idea how much we appreciate you! God bless you all ... as long as you're there, you are and will be the choice for our family. Thank you over and again! Tracey Marshall

It became clear very quickly that this funeral home is focused on money and volume, not compassion or care. Our service was rushed from start to finish. We were repeatedly interrupted with unrelated parking announcements. In the middle of my mother's honoring song -- a moment that mattered deeply to us -- the staff told us to turn the volume down so they could make yet another announcement. Although we arrived on time, they still cut our service short just to move on to the next one. Her slideshow wasn't even properly set up. Only one screen was turned on, leaving half the room unable to see her photos and memories. That level of carelessness during a final tribute is unacceptable. There were no tissues for mourners, no direction or support from staff, and no sense of leadership to help guide us through such an important moment. The entire experience felt cold, rushed, and transactional. To make things worse, they removed one of her songs from the obituary without explanation or permission. That was a personal detail we carefully chose to honor her life -- and they simply erased it. For a service that cost nearly $10,000, we expected respect, professionalism, and a facility that reflects dignity. Instead, the aesthetics are dated, uninviting, and in need of serious investment. The staff appears untrained, overwhelmed, and more focused on packing in back-to-back services than honoring the people entrusted to them. My family has used this funeral home for years, but after this experience, that ends with me. My mother deserved better, and families deserve to know what they're walking into. I hope people start paying attention and choose a place that truly cares instead of one that treats grief like a business transaction.

I was in town to help a family member complete the arrangements for her mother's funeral. Staff was told multiple times that we had not planned a funeral sevice before. But, from the 1st meeting that I attended I got an uneasy feeling about the level of service she'd receive. There is no continuity of care with staff. Too many different people to deal with when you're grief stricken. This resulted in fractured or downright miscommunication. Timelines were unclear adding to stress. Questions we had were often meant with blank stares. I could write a book about everything that went wrong or was mishandled but don'thave that kind of time. Suffice it to say, this business needs to level up their front-office professionalism and processes. They need to understand that families are grieving and at their weakest point. And, just because someone has attended funerals that doesn't mean they know the ins and outs of planning. This is THEIR business. It should run like a well-oiled machine. Now for the positive. Although the obituary needed a lot of re-work over 2 days the printer (who we had to insist on speaking wirh directly) was easy to work with and went above and beyond to get it right once she understood what was needed. She is the reason I'm adding a star. Otherwise it would be 1 star.

We discovered the stain and they refused to pay the expedited shipping fee because they said it was too much. The services was the next morning and they gave me their word they could replicate the design on it. I found out the day of the services they did not put the correct design on the back panel. I was devastated! The obituary was terrible. It looked unprofessional and we followed exact guidelines to get it done on time. I spent days working with the printer to get the obituary the way we wanted it. We missed the first hour to see my mom dealing with the printer. They were unorganized and we spent all of our time trying to get things done rather than grieving for my mom. I would not recommend Calahan Fineral Home. I am still devastated at what we went through dealing with them.

Then we had her remains sent back to Chicago for interment. Cage Memorial worked with a local Atlanta funeral home to bring our mother home to Chicago and then arrange the usual and customary funeral arrangements. They were patient in dealing with our small family and navigating the requests of the three family members involved in making the arrangements. In 2025 our family decided to move our grandmother from a remote south side Chicago cemetary to the same location as her children. Yet again, this was a complex process, requiring special permits from the city and coordinating with the original cemetary to move our grandmother. These transfers only take place May to September, just to complicate things even further. Cage was so professional in their handling of the challenges in this process. They kept things simple for the family who do not live in Chicago, communicating via text, email and offering digital documents for signature. The family couldn't be there on the day of transfer, but Cage kindly took photos of the procedure. I have the highest regard for Cage Memorial and recommend them for you funerary needs. The quality of care and value of their service was high.

The late Mr. Clarence Seals (proprietor and owner) has been like member of the family providing A+ guidance and services during some of the most difficult times in our lives. As world-wide pandemic COVID-19 continued, we unfortunately lost my aunt at the age of 82 on April 18, 2020. Although her death was not due to the virus but another illness, several years ago she undoubtedly requested that Seals Funeral Home handle her final arrangements (just as her late husband and other countless family members requested). Everything was pre-paid in full. Due to the pandemic her wishes could not be granted for a funeral service with attendees and a memorial celebration would have to take place at a later time. It was agreed that a burial service with three family members, the pastor and six pallbearers would take place at the cemetery. On April 27, 2020 at 10:45 am everyone had arrived and ready to commence at 11:00 am. Everyone except the hearse bearing my aunt's body that is. The cemetery informed us prior that once we arrived, we could not leave our vehicles for safety reasons. At 11:20 am and fearing a problem with the hearse had occurred, I contacted Seals Funeral Home. When an older woman answered the phone I explained the situation and asked nicely if there was a problem. This woman began yelling at me and telling me that she didn't know what the problem was and that we would have to wait; the hearse will arrive shortly. I immediately assumed that my aunt's goddaughter must've called before me and asked the same question because I later discovered she received the same rude response. Who knew? We're sequestered in our cars waiting. This woman at Seals was yelling so loudly that my husband could hear and asked what was wrong with her. I could not get one word in as this woman continued to rant and berate me. Finally, she finished, the only thing I could say was okay and thank you, and then she abruptly hung up the phone. The hearse was 1/2 hour late. Until today, my father, grandparents, maternal grandmother, uncles, aunts and cousins have received the best service from Seals Funeral Home. In the past, I have also recommended their services to friends and associates.....NEVER AGAIN! I later found out that the woman I was spoke to was Mrs. Ethel Seals (the owner's wife)! If Mr. Seals were alive today, this would never have happened. He valued his customers and they always felt secure leaving their loved ones in his care. It's tragic that his wife did not provide the same comfort to us today, and I pray that no other family will ever have to endure such treatment.
