Since the services, I have consistently contacted Cage Memorial--approximately every two months speaking with Bethany, to ask when my aunt's death certificate would be available. The last time I called was in May 2026. I was repeatedly told that the delay was due to the medical examiner's office. On August 26, 2026, I called again and spoke with Roland. I was placed on hold for approximately ten minutes. When he returned, he told me that the death certificate was there. When I asked when it had arrived, his response was, "What difference does it make? It's here now." I found that response extremely dismissive, especially after waiting so long and repeatedly following up. I went to Cage Memorial that same day with my sister to retrieve the death certificate. Unfortunately, the situation became even more upsetting disrespectful, and aggressive. Roland yelled at us, made derogatory comments about our skin color, and continued yelling at us as we left the building. He also stated that he had no empathy for the situation. Losing a loved one is already an incredibly difficult and emotional experience. Families should not have to deal with additional stress, hostility, or disrespect from the funeral home and the owners handling their loved one's arrangements and documents. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Cage Memorial to anyone. I encourage families to research their options carefully, compare prices, and read reviews before choosing a funeral home. The way a family is treated during one of the most difficult times in their lives matters.

Then we had her remains sent back to Chicago for interment. Cage Memorial worked with a local Atlanta funeral home to bring our mother home to Chicago and then arrange the usual and customary funeral arrangements. They were patient in dealing with our small family and navigating the requests of the three family members involved in making the arrangements. In 2025 our family decided to move our grandmother from a remote south side Chicago cemetary to the same location as her children. Yet again, this was a complex process, requiring special permits from the city and coordinating with the original cemetary to move our grandmother. These transfers only take place May to September, just to complicate things even further. Cage was so professional in their handling of the challenges in this process. They kept things simple for the family who do not live in Chicago, communicating via text, email and offering digital documents for signature. The family couldn't be there on the day of transfer, but Cage kindly took photos of the procedure. I have the highest regard for Cage Memorial and recommend them for you funerary needs. The quality of care and value of their service was high.

In the middle of making my dad's funeral arrangements. My baby sister was in a physical altercation with an employee of Smith and Thomas Funeral Home. No staff members apologized to the family or even attempted to remove the violent employee from the premises. I sadly was in the middle of the physical altercation and I am currently 5 months pregnant. 2.) While making our funeral arrangements the next day. The owner Mary Smith was micromanaging every step of planning process. There was constant calls and she kept demanding to have our life insurance policy brought to her. I believe these matters could have and should have been handle once we left the office. 3.) My father was not dressed in the appropriate attire that I picked out and informed the funeral director of my selection. When I asked a staff member why is my dad dressed that way. They informed me "Oh I don't know, Ms. Smith instructed me, oh there is nothing I can do". My siblings and I were faced with complete disrespect and disregard. It wasn't until I threaded to make a formal complaint that my wishes were taken seriously. 4.) During my father's visitation the owner Mary Smith, verbally attacked me. 5.) At my dad's funeral that same employee Eunice Young who attacked my sister was apart of his funeral service. Mary Smith and her staff had no regard for the disrespect and violence me and my siblings endured. Losing a loved one is a difficult time. Losing a parent is a very hard pill to swallow. A company such as Smith and Thomas Funeral Home who has been in business this long. Should have been more professionally and more respectable. Due to my siblings really wanting to use their services that is the ONLY reason we went with them. Sadly, my father Eric Smith was the vice president of Smith and Thomas Funeral Home. He worked there for 26 years. This establishment found every way possible to constantly disrespect and disregard his children. I highly advise NO ONE to use their services. Always available and had an answer to every question I had. Very helpful and I believe that most of all very understanding. As you all know we are going through difficult times with the Covid-19. Other funeral homes were giving me a very hard time and they seemed overwhelmed with work and even making me upset to the point that I would end up crying. Monica instead gave me her full attention and to this point answers every call very politely. My husband's wake was 6-7-20 everything was how I would have wanted to be. Since my husband had all his family in Mexico they were able to provide a transmission of the ceremony via their Bormann Funeral Home website(same owner). Maybe in the very near future they can just have it directly through their own website address. Everyone in Mexico were able to view the ceremony online, and were very happy that they were able to say their goodbyes to my husband. It really felt as if they were present. This service can definitely be improve by increasing more light in the room so it can look less dark when it is been recorded live, just a few people told me about how it looked dark. I don't know how new this live recording is in the U.S but definitely it was truly appreciate it that they were able to provide that service. No extra cost! At other Funeral homes they are charging at least $80 dollars. My husband remains will be sent to Mexico, therefore I am still waiting for the consulate's office to give us the Go! It is not up to the funeral how fast that can be done. But do let me tell you, they take care of all the paperwork that needs to get done to make this possible.
