My mom was taking great care of. I thank God that she looked so natural. My mom was not big on makeup and they made sure they placed as little makeup as possible, leaving her looking like herself. They gave her a manicure and pressed her hair to her favorite style. Very respectful staff and sympathetic to not only our needs but our feelings in our time of need. Very responsive to any questions we had and kept us in the loop of all movement with my mom. Limo was on time despite us living outside of the state. Very respectful and caring limo driver. April 2026 even after loosing my son ,A R Leaks on 78th and Cottage Grove , Chicago, made it the worst experience for me of 73 years on earth along with our family's pain and frustration. They lied ,gave us false information concerning government sponsored crime victim's funds, made false promises, price gouged , missed and re-scheduled appointments on short notice while out right playing on our grief and lack of experience. Every time we complained about one of the funeral directors ,they'd give us another director who would reassure us only to repeat this vicious, insensitive and blood-thirsty cycle all over again . And when we thought it couldn't get any worse, after arranging a viewing of the body for the night before the funeral and after billing us almost $10,000.00, they refused us the viewing and ended up sticking us in the smallest chapel they could have possibly found. Jenkins who greeted us the day of my mother's service at the Matteson location on 10/11/2025 - Most kind, accommodating, and a true gentleman. The organist was awesome as he had everyone in the room clapping and singing during the service. He was wonderful! Rev. Sondra who presided over my mother's service was absolutely outstanding! She knew nothing about us, but when she concluded the service, she had everyone in attendance laughing, engaged, and joyful. I felt comforted by her words and I cannot appropriately praise her as she ROCKS! I spoke to Leak jr. I was sent to him by a family member who highly recommend the funeral home. Leak Jr never followed up after two conversations. He set up an appointment and wasn't present. I had to make calls to see why my schedule appointment was not cancelled and why it was not taking place. I was told to go to another site to make the arrangements. I was quoted one price not asked all the questions that should have been asked and then told my bill would be an extra $2400. This raises serious concerns about the funeral home's due diligence of professionalism and accountability. This raises serious concerns about the funeral home's due diligence. They failed to properly verify me to come view my husband's body before the visitation. Instead, I viewed minutes before. When I arrive, I was told what room. When I went in, I immediately came out and told them they sent me to the wrong room. That person in the casket didn't look like my husband. I voiced concerns about the presentation of my husband's body. His face was shining with gold tones fluids coming out of his eyes like he was crying. I asked to speak with someone. They sent in Leak jr. I didn't know whom he was until later when I made a complaint. Instead of Leak jr. helping he became defensive, very dismissive and also very rude and sarcastic. I was devastated. The behavior that was displayed to me was very disrespectful in my time of grief. This entire experience has left a bitter taste, with the lack of unprofessionalism and compassion from the funeral home at a time that should have been dedicated to honoring my husband's memory. I will never refer anyone to this funeral home. I had a meeting with David and voiced my concern and issues to him all my concerns about how I was treated and whom this stranger was in the casket that wasn't my husband. Staff event said that the man in that casket doesn't look like Mr. Scott. He was a handsome man. David informed me he would address my concerns. Never happened. I didn't receive any calls of follow up. My feelings were dismissed. This was a horrible experience for me in my life with the sudden passing of my husband. I pray that in the future that families in their time of grief that this establishment will do better. My family has been using Leak and Sons formerly known as AR Leak since the 1960s. My mother grew up with the Leaks in Arkansas and this is why we have been committed to using their services. There have been some hiccups over the years but Spencer Leak Sr. would generally correct the error and apologize to the family. We are currently using Leak and Sons again for my nephew who was active duty military. The mother was told to call the National Cemetery to arrange a time for the burial. That wasn't her job but she called so there would not be any delays. My nephew will receive honors at the airport when his remains arrive. Only nine family members can attend. A call was made to Leak and Son to determine if the number given was a TSA regulation or a transportation issue. After speaking with Brian, it was determined that I will not give business to Leak and Sons again. When families are grieving, compassionate communication is the least one can ask of from any provider. read more

My family and I were just here no longer than 24 hours ago. The service we received was unprofessional, ungodly and unacceptable. There were caskets with bodies left in them open. The staff was rude; cursing at us. They had no true respect for our loved ones. The trauma that they inflicted on our family will last. From the beginning with the service personal who came to get my cousin and take him, Leak and Sons were rude and unprofessional. This place is like a factory it's liken to a factory assembly line. This place had so many deceased people it was unbelievable. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. I then noticed that there was another deceased person in the same room across from my cousin, there he lay in his casket. I thought how can this be!! We had no privacy, empathy, or compassion. When my father in law went home to be with the Lord, Leak prepared his body with complete care. While his home-going service was at his church, the visitation was on site at Leak. The entire process was easy and the staff was caring. Mr. Leak Sr himself made an appearance at the church in his signature gold tie and white hair. The limo service was excellent - and during the largest snow storm of 2018 the procession to the cemetery was well organized and thoughtfully planned. you do not know what tomorrow will bring. My nephew was killed in a tragic car vs two 18 Wheeler truck accident on 11/2023. The service was held at AR leak and son on 79th and cottage grove. After entering the service I ask a staff member for an obituary and was told these are for people that are sitting. I stated that I'm about to sit and this is my nephew the man told me " I don't give a damn who he was". I was dumb struck how can a staff member at such a prestigious funeral home be so cold and callous? Shawn L Nelson's funeral was 7/28/18. I did not appreciate the Pastor or whomever he was making the service about him, I tried to tell this to the owner he never returned my calls to this day! But to make matters worst! My brother remains has been sitting in storage at the Country Club Hills location since 8/1/18! And no one from there has called me!!! I had to find out from a family member who had no contact number on file?! And today would have been my brother birthday!!! Do you know how much hurt I am feeling at this point!!! I felt it only fair that I write an update after my most recent experience with Leak & Sons. My grandfather passed at the end of May and my grandmother entrusted the funeral services to their facilities. I was rather hesitant about the decision due to my family's previous experience 3 years ago. However, I am pleased to say that this encounter was drastically different for the most part. Nearly everyone was more than accommodating during the planning process. We were even provided with transportation from the train station for several family members coming from out of town for the services. Mr. Spencer Leak Jr. was very patient and understanding throughout this process. Just about any request my grandmother had he was able to honor. And for that we are truly grateful. The only major drawback was that some of the other workers were not as friendly. We had a slideshow DVD made by the nice gentleman that who handles the obituaries and my grandmother wished to have it played during the visitation. They sent someone in to handle the Audio/Visual work and he was rather surly. He asked questions about the formatting of the disc which I was unable to answer as it wasn't made by my family. This seemed to irritate him and he waved me off to try to figure it out himself. In any other setting I'd be able to brush that off. I work in Customer Service and deal with short tempers 5 days a week. However, in this instance we were standing just a foot away from my grandfather's remains, my weeping grandmother, and dozens of attendees. This type of attitude in such a setting is most definitely not acceptable. Aside from this encounter and some shortness from other workers, we were mostly pleased with the services. Unfortunately, we couldn't help but notice my grandfather's nose looked slightly bent which did bother us a little. Despite this, he did look very good. Definitely looked like his old self (he had been sick during his last days). And the comments from other reviewers about the amount of activity going on is definitely something to consider if you wish for a more calm setting. I had an open casket with someone inside wheeled by me as I was leaving the restroom. I also walked by a couple of small rooms with open caskets lying in wait. But, I completely understand that this is a very busy location and this is a business, after all. Overall, it was definitely an improvement from our last experience. The experience with Mr. Leak Jr. and the staff at the Country Club Hills location was phenomenal. They are the entire reason I even bothered to update my review. They alone deserve 5 stars. But, I sincerely hope that the workers from the Chicago location re-evaluate their empathy levels one day. Some reviewers complained about noise from other rooms/chapels infiltrating their space, but we didn't use the facilities so I can't speak to that. Others took issue with services rendered, or mentioned the lack of a sense of caring or compassion. These facets of Leak & Sons' offerings, however, I can address. We lost my dad suddenly on a Saturday afternoon, and Leak was recommended. We contacted them and were promptly attended to. They allowed us a few hours of additional time after pronouncement and release of the body for the family to gather and say goodbyes (per our request) before sending the van for removal. The attendant was understanding and very helpful. Our funeral director, Tanya Walker, was awesome! She was very patient and thorough, walking us through every step of this difficult process with compassion and grace. We were given useful suggestions and options for everything from attire to internment, programmes to disbursement of insurance policies, caskets/urns, and everything in between. She was helpful, but not pushy; knowledgeable, but not a know-it-all; attentive and communicative without being overbearing or overwhelming. I was pleased, also, that the pricing structure was very clear, and each item/product/service was clearly delineated, explained, and left to our discretion. I appreciate transparency and honesty in all business dealings, and Tanya displayed both during the entire process. She was a total bright spot during a very dark time! Another positive about Leak & Sons is that they offer (or partner with someone who does) most every additional amenity/service you might need: florists, printers, limousines, etc. Although we didn't use their florist, the printer was great, bearing/working with us despite several changes, a short lead time, and a ton of photos! The limousines were classy and clean, and the drivers were timely, professional, and courteous throughout our lengthy day of arrangements and activities. Kudos! In closing, I hope to never need their services again, but if I do, I would not hesitate to choose (or, even, recommend) Leak & Sons Funeral Home in the future! read more

I think people who are happy with this funeral home's service are use to receiving poor customer service. I am not. As we approached the funeral home on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, a lot of people were hanging around in front. Looked strange, but not a huge problem. I entered the funeral home and was greeted by a receptionist. Not a problem. I informed them that I wanted to speak to someone about services for my dad. Not a problem. They took my name, told me to have a seat in the waiting room and someone would be with be with me in moment. OK, again not a problem. We turned the corner and 2 families were ahead of us, waiting. After 5 mins, a young lady who worked there sat down at the table in the waiting room, pulled out her earphones and said nothing. OK. not good. We sat for 30 mins without a hello, someone will be with you, sorry for your wait, etc. NOTHING Employees were walking by, some with other families, some without but not ONE word from anyone. This is typical bad customer service. You don't leave families just waiting.. Act like you have compassion and customer service skills. We left and another family as well. Ridiculous. read more

I have been getting the run around for my mother's death certificate since September 2022.

If you like Walmart, you will love this funeral home. That's what I will call them. The Walmart of funeral homes. So many people outside of the building you would have thought it was a night club, and waiting for a funeral director was like being in the social security office's waiting room... My mother passed away 2 weeks ago, and I literally left the hospital and went to the funeral home to have her remains released to them. First, the guy that filled out the form for the release, tried to get me to 'Let him prearrange the funerals for my loved ones', and wanted to know why this one hadn't been prearranged. He went on telling me how someone had just had a $6000 funeral for only $1500, because they had prearranged it... Excuse me, my mother just passed away an hour ago... When my brother, my daughter and I went to meet with the funeral director, my daughter noticed that she was texting on her cell phone most of the time we were sitting right across from her, and someone, we found out afterwards, that it was Mr. Leak, had the TV blasting in the room next door. My daughter had to ask the director if she could have them turn the TV down, which she did... It was Mr. Leak, she said, he's hard of hearing. On the day of the 4PM visitation, we were told that someone would call us in advance, to tell us we could come view my mother and approve her appearance. When 2 o'clock came, and we still hadn't been called, I called them, and was informed that they just had just gotten her. My brother and I decided to go to the funeral home, as it was getting close to 4 PM. After we arrived, my mother's remains weren't ready until 3:15. And I didn't like the way she looked at all. First, she looked like she weighed about 350 pounds. Her body literally went from one side of the casket to the other. Since people would be arriving in less than 45 minutes, my brother told me to say she looked ok. But when people started visiting, everyone noticed how big she was, and she was not big when she passed away. Someone even told us she looked like they had put too much embalming fluid in her. We went back to the funeral home to complain about her appearance, and the young lady at the desk asked us if she had been on a ventilator when she passed away, and that that was the reason why she was so huge. And there was nothing that could be done about it. After having contemplated a closed casket because I was ashamed to have her seen looking like that, I called Leak & Sons the next morning, and was told that the embalmer or Mr. Leak would call me back to explain embalming to me... Mr. Leak called me back and said that my mother had had edema (fluid in her body) when she passed away, and that after death it attacks the lungs and neck area and spreads until they do the embalming process... (Even though I had gone to them the same day she left this planet, they didn't retrieve my mother from the hospital until the next day) Mr. Leak said that he would have someone attend to her as soon as they got in, and make her look more comfortable. We went back over that morning, and she looked the same. Add to that, wilted flowers from the next door flower shop. I called to ask that they be replaced, and they were, with added baby's breath and roses, but the ribbon banner was wrong... Instead of Beloved mother and grandmother, it had Beloved Mother and Grandson... The funeral was the next day at my mother's church. The hearse was there when we (the family) arrived, but no one to take the casket from the car to the church. The funeral director failed to mention to us, that we needed our own pall bearers, and since this was my first time planning a funeral, I had just assumed that the funeral home took care of that. Embarrassing can't describe how we felt when people started arriving, and the casket was still in the hearse. We had to wait for enough men to get there to do it for us. After the funeral, the lady in the hearse, who was very kind, gave me a bag with the remaining obituaries, the memorial book and thank you cards... no envelopes for the cards though. I had to make another trip back to the funeral home for the envelopes. I wanted to just buy some to avoid going back there, but because of their size, I couldn't find any to fit. Finally, it's been over a week, and still no death certificate so that I can handle the administrative business needed after my mother's death. I placed my dearly loved Grandmother in the hands of this funeral home and as the rating displayed, it could have been better. My family as others paid an exhorbant fee to have our loved one placed to rest in one would hope in a professional and orderly manner. The chapel was hot, my grandmother's make up was not up to par, after the fact of the funeral home staff being given a picture and specific instructions, the " funeral director" in charge the day of services gave incorrect information and it took what should have been at least a 30 minute drive, took an hour to get to the cemetary..snails pace.NOT GOOD. There was a small detour in which the hearse driver completely ignored...REALLY?? Travel in the suburbs much??? As long as this establishment has been in business one would assume they would have a better level of service. I will not be using these services ever again nor attend a service given at this facility. Death is a part of life - we know, but when your emotions are already high and dealng with grief, the LAST thing you need is incompetence and negligence! During this whole COVID-19, there are many restrictions and limits; which is why it's even more important to have open communication with the grieving families - NOT THE CASE WITH LEAKS! They misrepresented their cremation process with poor communication with me/my family and lack any professionalism - 30 minute wait on the phone to be hung up on! My mother service was kind of sloppy. They gave me a pastor who never did a funeral before. All he knew how to do was tell jokes to "lighten the mood" the ceremony was him telling past events in his life and not acknowledging my mom. He did no reassuring or review of the obituary before the service to at least familiarize himself with the decease. This is like the Chuck E. Cheese of funeral homes. It's too big with too much happening at once. Went to a service yesterday, and could barely hear due to someone singing at the top of her voice probably into a microphone in the next chapel. So loud. Then the preacher in the next room was a loud one. When the service from the other room let out, the noise was insane. Talking, yelling. This place obviously needs more soundproofing, better scheduling, anything to make services more respectable. I have an extra star because they seemed to be respectful of the grieving family. My boyfriend's sister passed very unexpectedly, and her son (in his early 20's) planned most of the arrangements through Leak & Sons. I realize Leak & Sons is a very old business that has been serving the Chicago south side for a few generations, and in fact some members in my boyfriend's family have gone to church with the Leaks for years. I however found all services sub-par, and lacking efficiency and they all seemed quite new at it, not like they've been thriving for generations. The family of the deceased was told to be there at 4:30. We arrived at 4 and they have several very large parking lots around the building for visitation attendees. We went in the front doors, and there's a large reception counter, where we gave the name of the deceased and said we were with the family. The receptionist told us "Oh no, that body isn't ready yet. We don't start until 7pm." Hmm... that'll be a problem. Boyfriend immediately started getting agitated. "You can wait in the waiting room though." Aaaah, the waiting room. Crazy bright lighting, square room with shoddy laminate flooring, a few chairs (like 12) around the outside of the room, crooked frames on the walls, a water cooler, and 5 doors. This room is anything but quiet or serene. People were coming in and out of these doors every 40 seconds. In one, out the other. In the 3rd, out the 4th. It was SO disruptive. Then the whole family arrived, and we were all sitting in that room for about 40 minutes. I asked the reception if there was a coat room we could all put our winter coats in. Nope. No coat room either. They finally show us to the visitation room, where the deceased was. There was some dreadfully sad piano music playing over the speakers that we eventually requested they turn off. The room was set up like a church. Viewing lane at the front, and the entire room filled with pews. NO area to gather, talk, congregate. Was strange. Not even a place to sit so that you're facing someone else. Then, while the family found a seat to sit in and be quiet for a few moments, staff continually came in and out through the doors to place plants and flowers up at the front of the room. Even when the family was sitting quietly and there were tears and grieving, in they came again and again, all walking back and forth in front of the deceased. Incredibly disruptive, and then they kept moving them all around, and shifting where they were. They had no table or anything for the family to lay out a few photos. There was a single box of tissues in the room. Come on!!! This is a business that's been around for generations. Overall, I found the place and the service to be disturbing, not quite thoughtful, and pretty disorganized. The actual room was pretty, parking convenient, but if you want a more comforting experience, and a service that makes sure you are at ease throughout the process, I say keep looking around. read more

My dad recently passed away and we chose leak to do a memorial service. When we met with the staff, we were held in a large open area with other families and had to wait at least 45 minutes after our scheduled appointment with spencer leak sr. When they called us in finally for the appointment, he passed us off to another director. She was helpful, but not well versed in the process. We decided to use the Jackson Chapel for our services. It was the least outdated of all the rooms available. We were doing a cremation so only needed to have a few photos of the deceased and a dvd tribute for the guests. So, during the days prior to the memorial we were trying to finalize the details and couldn't get our calls returned. My mom had to stalk the assigned funeral director on her day off to just get a response. As a result, I had to ask for a new funeral director to handle our service. We arrived to check out the room we were assigned, when I got there to go over the setup with her, there was a body in an open casket just out in the open. Clearly no respect for your loved ones. I was so glad we were not having funeral services here. I had to walk around this poor woman's casket to finish our arrangements. The day of the memorial service, we were told to arrive for a 3pm start of services by 2:30pm. Once we arrived, we were told that the chapel we reserved was still being used by another family that was running over. So we would have to have our guest gather in an empty chapel until the other party decided to end their service. Mr. Spencer Leak sr. came by after I argued with a funeral director to get him. He said this is all I can do for you. So I told him I wanted a refund of the room charge and we ended up using the alternate chapel for my dads services. At this point, there was nothing we could do. They had our $$$. In the end we received a refund for the room charge and made the services work. I would give ZERO stars for this place if I could. I'd love to have channel two news' Pam Zeckman do one of those undercover investigations on this place. To make matters worse they tried to get us to use their florist which is attached to their building. We go to visit the florist and she's a family member of the Leak's. the flowers they provided were rentals and made of plastic. LMAO!!! When we were remotely thinking of choosing a floral spray for the memorial services. We were told: I'm sorry I don't have a matching pair as one of the flowers was stolen from the last funeral. I wouldn't use this place if it were the only choice I had. its been aprox three months and counting and I still have no death certificate for my fiancé who passed 7/18/2018. I call every day and no one seems to know anything . one lady was/is on vacation (Ms Barbra) and the funeral director that was oh so "helpful" before they were paid is now not able to help me as this is not her dept. smh I can't believe that they can treat people like this and still get business. I hate that we ever used them and would tell anyone who will listen to run in the opposite direction! I have filed a compliant with the BBB and I hope this place is investigated. No family should have to hound you for something we paid for and that we need to handle business. EB L. April 4, 2019, my husband went on-line, found and requested Leak's Funeral Home to recover the remains of his dear mother who had passed in her home. This initial contact went well. However, after arriving in Chicago three days later from Atlanta, Ga. began a rocky up and down encounter in the attempt to plan mom's funeral services. Sunday, we met with a representative to begin to set up the service which went well at this point. What was really disturbing was the misspelling of mom's name in the obituary announcement article. When notified, it was corrected without an apology. In all fairness the viewing went well and we were very pleased, However, the next day, the day of the funeral, we were called about finances that were being handled by another source. We had nothing to do with the insurance and up to that point as far as we knew, financing were resolved and payment made. It was upsetting that we were being pulled into this scenario just hours before the funeral, this was inappropriate. At the funeral the gentleman who was assigned to our family was rude, non-compassionate and inattentive to us. When he was asked about the time of the arrival of musician, we were told the musician would get there about 10 minutes prior to the service. Minutes before mom's service, the musician came in and was briefed on the musical selections. However, he sang the wrong song and played the other songs in the wrong key which proved to be too high for everyone singing except him. It was a disaster. After not being able to get information as to when we could get the death certificate. We had to leave Chicago without it and call back to vital statistics and get it on our own. Not very helpful... Lastly, I called to speak with Mr. Spencer Leak Jr. to voice our complaint. He was immediately defensive and condescending in his statements. He too, was rude... The service is terrible and unacceptable! They give families a time to come to make arrangements and keep you waiting for hours. NO Empathy! They retrieve your loved one's remains and keep you waiting after that because they have your money and business now. They're taking advantage of black families in the community they serve. Leak & Sons provided the services for my Dad and I don't know what I would have done without them. It was like going to family members for help.
