I used to grab a sandwich at Cold Spring Cheese Shop quite often on my trips to cold spring, but…read morelately I haven't really been enjoying my stops here. This time around I ordered the salami and blue cheese and the roast beef special. The cheese and bread are all super fresh, but that didn't stop the roast beef sandwich from being a bit bland. The salami and blue cheese sandwich is a favorite of mine, and again was super fresh, but the sandwich was small and doesn't come with any veggies. I think the reason I am giving this two stars, and not three of four, is because of the ambiance and service. This time we waited around 20 minutes just to order our sandwiches, as there was only one person in the front, and they spent 15 minutes letting some people ahead of us sample cheese. The shop was packed, but the line was barely moving. We also saw the employees stick his nose in some mortadella and sniff it... not sure if that was a quality check but it was a bit of a turn-off. The shop itself is cute, but it has no bathroom or indoor seating, which is a must after a long car ride or hike (the area is famous for hiking). There are two outdoor tables, but they are extremely cramped. We sat down with our baby and there just wasn't enough room for us and the three ladies next to us, so my husband ate standing up. The cheese itself is quite nice and the staff is quite knowledgeable about what they products they offer. However, I like to stop here for lunch, and the lunch menu is limited to sandwiches. There are only a few sandwiches offered (maybe 5 and two specials) and they don't rotate through menu items very often, so I feel like I've tried each sandwich they offer multiple times over at this point. The sandwiches are usually quite bare and don't come with many veggies or variety. So that being said, I've been returning less because I'm a bit bored by the offerings.

As a local, I've stopped into Claude's several times over the past few months. Sometimes after a…read morelong paddle on the Hudson, sometimes while showing friends around Cold Spring, and sometimes simply because it's convenient. Most recently, we grabbed two sandwiches for pickup. My opinion hasn't changed much over those visits. Claude's makes perfectly acceptable sandwiches. They're fresh, they're filling, and if you're already in the village and looking for something quick, you'll probably leave satisfied. I've never had a bad meal here. I've also never had one that made me think, "I can't wait to come back for that." That's really the theme of Claude's for me: convenience over destination. At roughly $45 for two sandwiches, I start expecting something memorable--whether that's exceptional bread, standout ingredients, creative combinations, or flawless execution. Instead, everything lands squarely in the middle. The ingredients are good. The preparation is good. The speed is generally good. It's all...good. Just not great. Living nearby also means I can't help but compare it to other local sandwich shops. If I'm looking for a dependable classic, I'd personally head to B&L Deli. If I want one of the best sandwiches in the Hudson Valley, I'll happily drive one town south to Benny's Brown Bag. Both leave a stronger impression and offer better overall value in my opinion. One thing I'd encourage is embracing customer feedback a little more openly. Every local restaurant receives honest criticism, especially in a town where you have diversity in your customers. That's not necessarily a bad thing--it's often the fastest path to becoming exceptional. Reading through responses to reviews gave me the impression that feedback is sometimes met defensively rather than viewed as an opportunity. As someone who genuinely wants independent businesses in Cold Spring to thrive, I'd rather see that energy directed towards improvement. This isn't a restaurant I'm rooting against--quite the opposite. I'd love to see Claude's become the sandwich shop people plan their trip around instead of the one they choose because it's available. Right now, it fills an important niche in the village, and there's certainly value in that. If you're visiting Cold Spring and everything else is packed, you'll likely enjoy your meal. If you're specifically chasing the best sandwich in the area, I'd suggest venturing just a little farther. Sometimes "good enough" is exactly what you need. I just think Claude's has the potential to be much more than that.

The bread is fresh and just enough crunch as you bite into it. The filling is a good ratio of meats and other fixings that you have everything in every bite down to the last one! I love the menu concept of their recommended curated sandwiches and toppings, but space to build your own combination on the card provided. Genius. It's a take out spot, so perfect to order and take on a hike or find a spot outside to take in the views. There is no seating associated with the store front. A few downsides to mention... 1. I believe they opened recently but the hours are a little tough. Friday- Sunday 10-5pm hopefully that changes. 2. There are no prices anywhere on the sandwich menu or on the build your own card so it's a surprise when you get to the register and I wouldn't say that sandwiches are cheap. All in all I would highly recommend if you're in the mood for a good sandwich!

They didn't ask how I'd like the burger cooked, and the patty was cooked to a standard doneness. It wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but it was hearty, satisfying, and definitely filling. Nothing beats an ice-cold beer after a hike. Compared to Manhattan, the prices were very reasonable, making the meal feel like a great value. One of the best parts is the location right next to the railroad tracks--you can enjoy your meal while watching the trains pass by, which gives the place a unique charm. If it's your first time visiting Cold Spring, I'd recommend starting your trip here.

THIS PLACE CHANGED - not in a good way…read more We loved this place in the past. It was at the end of town with a nice large outdoor seating area. Well, this joint fills up with NYC nature seekers and think they are in Gramercy park. Therefore the servers pre judge you for being a snooty invader who keeps the joint open. One incident the greeter greeted me with " that dog is not included in your party?" When asked if outdoor seating is available. 8 tables were empty. Another time, same greeter, told us the wait was 40 mins. I utilized the rest room to only see that there were empty booths inside. We were dog less and she did not ask nor had the time to ask if we wanted to sit inside. The last time we went, late July, there was no snotty greeter. The greeter was one of the servers, so she had to sweat both jobs. Had my 10 pound dog! No comment. We sat down and waited. And waited and waited. Then an obviously overstressed male server, who was sick of his job, dropped some menus on the table and asked what shall he get us. Well sorry we did not research the menus on line before hand. Waited again. Finally ordered. We needed condiments. Waited. The place was packed. Two servers. The train blew by with its horn blasting. A drink would have helped. The burgers are good. Gonna try to eat inside one more time before I write this place off. Sad.
