We visited here a lifetime ago in early March, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Check dates, because they may be temporarily closed.
This incredible light show takes place at the Chichen Itza archaeological zone after sunset (beginning times vary, but they will let you know exactly what time when you buy the tickets). You have time to explore the area of all the buildings on the site, which are all illuminated in colored lights that continually change. You have about 30 to 45 minutes to walk around and see this marvelous site bathed in ethereal lights, making the site seem even more other-worldly.
You are then seated to see a light show that is projected on the Pyramid of Kukulkan (aka the Castle). The show tells the story of the Mayan religion and history, and specifically life at this ruined city. While the introduction is narrated in English and Spanish, the main show is only narrated in Spanish, but even if you don't speak the language, the show is spectacular. It lasts another 25 or 30 minutes.
In 1988, Chichén Itzá was declared "World Heritage" by UNESCO and it is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. By day, the site is open for regular viewing as well.
Tickets cost $520 MXN, which is about $20 or $25 US, and it's completely worth it.
I highly recommend this show (experience)--I've never seen anything like it.
