The size of Amoeba overwhelmed me, but positively. This place was easily way bigger than my local…read morerecord shop, let alone any record shop I've been to in the past. Amoeba offers a VAST collection of vinyls, DVDs, CDs, stickers, and magnets. My partner and I collect vinyls, and we didn't leave disappointed.

I still remember when this location was Park Bowl, but that was (gasp) over thirty years ago when…read morebowling was still a popular social activity. I myself was on a bowling team named the Orient Express, and I wish I still had my red team shirt with the dragon on the back. But I digress as this has been an independent record store since 1997, an offshoot of the Berkeley store on Telegraph. Digital downloads be damned, this shop is focused on physical media...CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes, Blu-rays, and of course, vinyl. Even before picking up spares at Park Bowl, I recall that moment in my youth when I made the monumental decision to switch my record purchases from vinyl to CDs. Nowadays, vinyl is making a comeback among a younger generation looking for a higher quality, more realistic sound quality. I saw these Gen Z audiophiles flipping through the long LP bins in search of the elusive underground classic their stereophonic friends could appreciate and envy. Personally I could find nuggets of my own. Albums like The Very Best of Spike Jones (Photo 10) and The Complete 2,000 Year Old Man (Photo 5) resonated with me. I was happy to see individual LPs consolidated into boxed sets like the Linda Ronstadt retrospective. Beyond the music is the expansive DVD collection of movie titles both classic and obscure. There's also books and collectible merchandise like pop-culture lunch boxes and celebrity prayer candles. I'm not sure I need a candle that deifies Aubrey Plaza, but it's good to know where I can get one. RELATED - Exploring the Haight? GameStop has some seriously scummy business practices. I made a preorder for an item and paid in…read morefull upfront. Never got a call or notification that it was ready for pickup. After waiting 2 weeks, I finally called the store myself and was told they had sold out, but they'd let me know if they got a restock. The very next week they called and suddenly said they had it in stock, but I had to come pick it up that same day or they wouldn't hold it for me anymore. After rushing to the store, they then told me I still had a balance due because the price of the item had increased by 33%. How does that make any sense? If a customer already prepaid in full during the preorder, the agreed price should be locked in. Raising the price at pickup after taking someone's money weeks earlier is ridiculous and feels extremely dishonest. Between the lack of communication, selling out my preorder, and then trying to charge me more afterward, this was one of the worst retail experiences I've had. Would not recommend preordering anything from GameStop, especially TCG as the prices are pretty much market price and not MSRP compared to other retailers

Only place in SF I know of that has Topps at MSRP. Honestly, a Mega is like $.25 a card. If you like Baseball even a little, why not?

at first, i was a bit confused since i mistook this store for a walk-in shop and didn't know about…read morethe pickup deal. i didn't have an exact product in mind, but i settled on pokemon cards before the person in front of me was done. the man (or possibly owner?) was really helpful and engaged a lot with customers to make sure he knew what they wanted or what they were inquiring. im just a hobbyist card collector, so i didn't know what specific series of cards i was looking for, and he just suggested the cheapest ones, which were what i was going for. initially i was nervous and didn't know if there was a pack limit, but he clarified its just so people don't buy out the entire stock (which is very good for business, since it happens all too often at retail spaces!) even if you don't have an order or know the exact product to the precise detail you want, staff is very helpful in giving you options :) a nice place that id stop by every week if i were local!!

The employee seemed offended that we didn't know the process and told us they did pickup only. Not once did he inform us on the actual website. Secondly the employee from the back came out to "answer" our questions, which he also was offended we were inquiring about a set that came out 6 weeks ago. He informed us we were "6 weeks late". He then proceeded to tell us incorrect information about the sets. Which feels was done on purpose. Pricing? These are scalpers, unauthorized resellers. These are the kind of people that weigh/scan packs and open all the hits. They were showing us set boxes with the shrink wrap missing, but were selling it to us at scalper pricing. (Meaning they weren't doing that thing were target rips open the shrink wrap so only collectors buy)

If your idea of a good time is an afternoon spent rambling around in a 5000-plus foot maze among…read morethe books, then Green Apple Books is for you. What I love here are the carefully curated staff selections that are found everywhere. There are always unexpected finds and books you'd never unearth online all housed in this labyrinth of a store. The tables of discounted and used books upstairs are worth a browse. The atmosphere is welcoming, dusty, and this old Victorian house is perfect for wandering. One of my favorite Sunday rituals: browsing until I find something unexpected, and then heading down Clement for dim sum, some thrifting, maybe a Kamei treasure, a strawberry crepe, and some Asian groceries. A Green Apple visit makes the outing complete. San Francisco still has a few good remaining bookstores, and the selection hidden in the winding nooks and crannies at Green Apple, keep it near the top of my list.

Once you go inside it is a tight place but cute. They have new and used books , two floors. What I liked were the flashcards in front of books giving a little description and thoughts on books. I felt some new books were overpriced. However their clearance and sale books were a great deal. I got an art book for $6. Service was not personable. I was not greeted even at register when I was ready to pay. The lady just charged me. She didn't offer any bag either. It was a little awkward. I love visiting bookstores. However, this one might be the one least friendly I encountered. Overall they have a good selection of books.
