I was visiting from out of town and the coaches and members were so welcoming! I'll definitely return when I'm visiting in the future.

Kyle was very responsive when I reached out about dropping in and Casey coached an awesome class.

We selected this day for my first time (read: I am super out-of-shape, do not go to the gym, etc.) because it was low on cardio, focused on different stations of strength-based work, and easy to be modified. For example, if you move to a station where you are to lift weights, you could select 10 pound weights or 30 (or whatever) that is best suited for your needs. I wasn't nervous about coming because I've been to gyms of similar formats before. I was weary of embarrassing my friend in front of her other friends and coaches due to my lack of physical ability, but she assured me that no one would be judgmental and everyone would be encouraging. She was exactly right. Even better, no one seemed to give a rat's ass about what I was doing. And I mean that in a positive way. How nice to be able to work out and not feel like anyone is looking at you. That said, the coaches did keep an eye on me, to make sure I was doing the correct format or to offer me tips and modifications when it was obvious I needed it. I really enjoyed training at F45 this week, and I wish I lived in town so I could go back more often. I might want to check with the facility to see if they offer packages where you can purchase like a 10-class pass or something, because then I could join my friend when I visit from out of town or am home for holidays. I highly encourage anyone in Mount Pleasant or who lives in the area of an F45 to try out a class. You will not regret it!

The instructor was really nice and it was easy to follow. This was one of the most challenging workouts I've done in a long time! I love HyLo for the showers alone. The women's shower is a full room, with marble walls, and all the accoutrements you'd need--soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, towels, and even a scale. My only complaint is that they don't have makeup remover or any hair products in the bathroom when I'm getting ready after my workout, but I just bring what I need from home. The HY classes really work you in the cardio department. They all use a combination of spin bikes, rowing machines, free weights / kettlebells, ropes, TRX things (idk what they're called), and body weight to perform a lot of exercises in a short period of time with a lot of energy. Similar to what I assume some crossfit classes include. The LO classes use a special board to use your body weight and weighted poles or rubber bands to strengthen your body using your own body weight. This is most similar to pilates, barre, or yoga. All of which I'm terrible at, as I have the upper body strength of a newborn baby. Both classes totally kick my butt and make me feel like I've really worked my body hard! Highly recommend!

Instead hey have a few scattered machines that you have to set your mats in the middle of. This place gets packed fast during peak hours. About 5P during the week nearly every machine is full (something to keep in mind when you join and note that it will be worse at the start of the new year as people try to tackle those new year resolutions. ) I ended up switching gyms during the summer when they offered free memberships to teens. If it wasn't busy before it was then as parents used it as a daycare and you would have groups of 3-6 teenagers all hanging out, crowding machines but not working out. It was a nightmare. I don't know why this one is so much worse than the other locations but I hope they figure it out. This is also advertised as a 24hr gym but they close at 7p on the weekends. There are no scales in the gym to track your progress because I was told it might offend some people. (You're either in the gym to be loose weight or build muscle so scales are important to have.) Over the weekend they installed new equipment. That has bumped my rating up from 2 to 3 stars.

If you live or work downtown, this gym is your best budget option, as it's a short drive on the James Island Connector, and peninsula gyms are pricey. This is also a good gym option for those visiting Folly Beach who may want to get their workout in. The eight TVs on the walls have a great variety of trash TV for your workout enjoyment, including Bravo, Food Network, and several ESPN channels. I appreciated that none of the TVs were set to news, because I like to escape the dumpster fire of the world when I work out. I have a Planet Fitness Black Card membership, and this is certainly one of the nicest locations in Charleston.
