It is reasonably clean, doesn't have an unpleasant…read moresmell, but our room had problems--some cosmetic, some not--that make it unlikely we'll stay there again. One of the ceiling tiles was mostly pulled off. Though the sides of the shower stall looked recently replaced, the floor of it was coming apart. More concerning, the door looked like it had been recently jimmied open, and the frame of the window screen was pulled out from the window (see photos)--it wouldn't be hard for someone to pull out the full screen, and if mosquitoes were out they'd be getting in your room. The dresser had a notice taped to it stating that one of its legs was broken--instead of printing out the notice, why not fix the leg? Some of the towels had a distinct yellow stain--we made a point of using the whiter ones. Be aware that the room door locks automatically, and you can't set it to stay unlocked--if you close it behind you, you will be locked out, so check to be sure you've got your key before leaving. We didn't learn this the hard way, but easily could have. At least it was quiet, and close to where we needed to be. I have seen worse, though next time I'm in the area, I'll be looking for something better.

Since the "renovations" the prices really increased. But the unit and building we stayed in didn't show any signs of improvement. The unit smelled of smoke, the furniture was well worn and needed replacement. The view was less than desirable, we could see part of the parking lot and the side of the hill just around the overgrown bushes. There were also large weeds and vines growing up thru the decking. Additionally the smell in the hallway leading to the condo less than pleasant. It smell like a mix of bad take out and rubbish. Sadly I think this will be our last stay at The Highlands.

I can't even make out with my wife for fear of my grandma coming in and catching us. All kidding aside, Joe and Nikola are wonderful hosts and can get you most anything you need. Very cheap rates, but tiny spaces. Very outdated. Very welcoming. How did such an antiquated motor lodge end up with such a complicated streaming set-up? It's just Roku, but for folks over 60, it may as well be translating Swahili. We watched a few free programs then gave up and hooked up my dvd player. The complimentary breakfast cracked me up. It was a few bagels pulled from the fridge, a carafe of lukewarm coffee (that tasted surprisingly good), a couple boxes of cereal and a bowl of fruit. It was every bit like my aunt Helen's kitchen. We were in luck. Nikola just made banana bread. It's really not too funny when you consider the breakfast was better than last week at the Days inn, Marquette. No one was in the lobby when we arrived, but we txt the owner per her emailed instructions and she arrived within a couple of minutes. She gave us all the instructions we needed for the stay. They even have a cork board to leave notes in case you need anything. Very much a small-town-charming type of thing. The place was very chilly when we arrived. However it warmed up a bit by the time we returned for the day, and the extra blankets were very cozy. My fiance Jeremy and I slept like a rock! So, it's not a hotel. We had no expectation of anyone coming into the room for a turn down service. There were no door signs to say "please clean" or "please do not clean" like in a hotel. However, someone came into the room during our stay. They didn't clean anything. They simply opened the window and replaced the bathroom floor mat. You would think, if you're coming into the room you would make the bed or something? Nope, just changed the mat and opened the window. It was VERY strange! Otherwise the place felt safe and secure. It was quiet in the evenings. We enjoyed some wine by the fireplace before bed each night. They have a fenced in back porch area with grass and lawn furniture. I think that would be really great for families with small children. We had a nice chat with both owners on our way out. They really are very friendly with a lot of great local recommendations. All in all it was a nice and relaxing trip. I would definitely stay here again.
