Would give 0 stars if possible. Don't waste your time at this place. Was absolute trash, so don't get sucked into this place regardless of others reviews. The fried mozzarella and anchovies starter was flavorless and included one tiny piece of something that I guess they called an anchovy. We then ordered the carbonara, which was just as disappointing. Pieces of curdled egg, super oily, flavorless pasta and don't get me started on whatever "meat" chunks were included. Still unsure what it was. My wife ordered the gnocchi dish which came out in a sizzling dish, think sizzling fajita plate, that was not gnocchi at all. Fried cheese smothering a bread like something underneath. We pushed our dishes aside to finish our wine and decided we would get the bill and go elsewhere for lunch. The server came by a few minutes later to ask on things. We stated it was no good, so he removed the plates and never came back. We sat for another 10-12 minutes finishing our bottle of wine and not one visit from the manager or our server. I left cash on the table for the wine and we left because they obviously weren't interested in trying to make things right or offer us anything else for lunch. Stay away from this place! read more

I was REALLY looking forward to a meal in the Jewish Ghetto. My travel companions and I were talking about it for days and were really excited to try the unique cuisine. When we arrived we had a hard time choosing which restaurant to go to especially since the people standing outside of the restaurants were desperate for clients (it was a monday night and there was hardly anybody). We eventually decided upon Nonna Betta primarily because of the Anthony Bourdain endorsement. I think that either Anthony Bourdain wasn't served by the same chef or the restaurant became incredibly lazy since his endorsement. The food was TERRIBLE which is pretty astounding given the fact that my friends and I were the only ones in the restaurant. Firstly, the appetizers were bland and flavorless (fried zucchini and mozzarella). The fried artichoke was burnt and unappetizing. I was extremely disappointed with the entree. I had ordered the fish, per the server's recommendation and it was so salty that I felt sick and couldn't finish the meal. Nonna Betta a great find. Located in the Jewish ghetto of Rome has unique dishes on their menu that you can't find any where else. Their specialty cod dish is fantastic!!! Absolutely fabulous! My friend and I were staying nearby, but chose this place for dinner based on Yelp reviews! The artichoke is a must along with their fried mozzarella which we were hankering for the next day. Her fish was excellent as was my pasta thought on a very hot plate! We also got the kosher wine which was yummy and much better than the ones I had tried. They make it themselves so! Excellent kosher food right in the ghetto, across the street from the synagogue. I had the falafel with bread and my wife had the fried artichoke. Both were outstanding! The service was top-notch and the staff couldn't have been more friendly. It you find yourself in this area, this is a great place to plan lunch or dinner. I'm giving the restaurant 4 stars instead of 5 because the service was so slow at first. Once we got a table, we had to wait at least 30 minutes to place our order and that was only after the guests at the table next to us called another server over. Once we switched servers, things were moving much faster. We ordered the Jewish carbonara, oxtail soup, and the antipasto nonni betta. My husband and I went into this restaurant because of the good reviews and a poster of Andrew Bourdain outside the restaurant with a quote "Best artichoke in Rome." Place is a disaster; poorly managed; horrible service. Our waiter barely spoke or understood English which is rare in Rome - a tourist mecca. I asked him for the artichokes Bourdain seemed to be raving about and was suggested the Nonna Betta artichokes which was actually one artichoke and cod tempura and something else which was a mystery. Quite frankly the worst artichoke I had in Rome so far and we've been here a week and I've been sampling artichokes everywhere. So not quite sure why Bourdain thinks these are the best - his bar must be set pretty low. I ordered cod baccala, a house specialty and my husband went with lasagna. My cod was so salty I could not eat more than half before giving up. My husband's lasagna was barely edible. There was a huge crowd in this restaurant so obviously it's quite popular. But for me it was really the worst food I've had in Rome. And don't let the "cucina kosher style" above the door and on the menu fool you if you are looking for a kosher restaurant. This restaurant is not kosher - meat not kosher and they serve meat and dairy. My husband and I are not that religious but want those who are to beware. Skip this restaurant if you're looking for an extraordinary Roman dinner - there are literally dozens of excellent restaurants within walking distance. read more

Anthony Bourdain was not lying, the fried artichokes are good. VERY salty - which is what they should taste like (in my opinion). Amazing hummus and pita bread. The seating on the inside is a little tight but once they set up the outside tables things got a little better. This restaurant is outside of the normal busy sections of Rome and you walk through a quiet Jewish ghetto to get there. Terrible, terrible customer service. The waiters were extremely disrespectful. I'll explain the situation: we ordered artichokes, pasta, and an eggplant dish. After we finished the artichokes, the waiter comes over and says, "can I get you anything else?" And was ready to give us our bill. We said, yes, our pasta? We finish the pasta dish and are waiting for the eggplant...and waiting...and waiting. Very difficult to flag down a waiter. Then, one comes over and asks us if we want dessert. I explained that we were waiting for our eggplant but we no longer want it because we had waited for 25 minutes after finishing the pasta dish. The waiter replies, "25 minutes? It was not 25 minutes. Im the one that brought out your pasta!" I said, are you really going to argue with the customer about this? Also, it is clear that forgot about our next course if you asked us about dessert. We got the check from another waiter (who brought it over without us asking) and we paid. As we're down the block, we hear the waiter screaming after us and accusing us of not paying!!!! Can you believe this!!!!!!??? We showed him the receipt and he ran away. THIS WAS THE RUDEST , MOST UNCOMFORTABLE DINING EXPERIENCE! Love this place! Everything we had here was good. Of course, the Jewish-style artichoke. Yes, Anthony Bordain was here and loved it, ignore that review (or read the restaurants explanation of the location). I had the paté that was hearty. The eggplant parmesan was overcooked but had good flavors (so maybe ask them to remove from oven early ). My mom had the baked lamb that she really enjoyed - tender meat. And my sister had some linguini with beef that she really enjoyed, especially the flavors of the light sauce. It is right in the heart of the "Jewish ghetto", had nice / helpful servers that helped with recommendations for our food. Plenty of outside tables. My review is not about the food which was good although I must say I can cook oxtail just as well as theirs was. Just braise the oxtail in liquid at low temp for 4-6 hours. We went yesterday for lunch. Took 45 minutes for our food to arrive. Everyone who came after us got food before us. It may have something to do with what we ordered. My wife ordered tripe and I ordered oxtail. Asked one server for bread, five minutes later asked another server for bread and then asked a third one for bread. They all arrived at the same time with bread. It's like all the servers were serving all tables and no one was assigned to a particular table. We were the first guests here on a Thursday night at 5:45PM. This place is tucked in the Jewish neighborhood, right next to Portico Octavia ruins. A friend of mind recommended that we try this place while in Rome. Service was excellent - they made us feel very comfortable. Had the fried artichoke, which was a first, and it was good. I had the tartaglione in the house meat sauce and my friend had the eggplant parmesan. It was good, hot food, but not the best. Our bread was stale so we asked for olive oil and vinegar. Recommended by our hotel for traditional roman food. It's kind of hard to find tucked away in the middle of the Jewish district where it's hard to park a car much less drive. First time in Rome and we were a little disappointed with Nonna Betta, given all the good reviews. I was very much looking forward to trying Carciofi alla Giuda (Jewish fried artichokes), and the artichokes at Nonna Betta's were our favorite dish of the meal, for sure. We ordered a salad of fennel, oranges and olives, which sounded good on the menu, but turned out to be bland and the flavors didn't meld at all in the magic way some salads can. We had the vegetable minestrone, which was pretty good, and the Nonna special fish, which was a white fish with a nice sauce. Pretty tasty, but too salty for my taste ($20 Euros for a non generous serving). Like many (all?) Italian restaurants, they charged for bread and water. We didn't have wine. Dinner was 39 Euros. As we walked away, we just felt nothing really wowed us, and found ourselves wondering if we should have chosen one of the many other nice/task looking kosher restaurants on that street in the Jewish ghetto neighborhood. It is a wonderful fun area to be in the evening, and not far from the amazing Pantheon, so we certainly recommend you go to that neighborhood and try something! read more
