An absolute gem in Nanaimo!…read more upon the recommendation of a very good buddy, on my way to tofino, i passed by nanaimo for a hearty lunch in this family owned Vietnamese restaurant. Staff and owner very hospitable and welcoming! never in my wildest imagination did i expect to find excellent Vietnamese food the city of Nanaimo. this restaurant puts many Vancouver restaurants to shame. Their level of dedication to their craft is admirable and impressive. For appys...We started with fried wontons and the beef roll. My on my, the wontons were crispy-liciously goood! They were not your typical chinese fried wontons...the wrapper is paper thin and had a yellowish colour. And its because they used the spring roll wrapper to make It, making it super extra crispy. The pork filling was hot and juicy. Seasoned perfextly With a touch of cumin. One bite, and you will be in wonton heaven. the beef roll was truly a unique masterpiece. Whoever thought of putting a friend spring roll inside a salad roll and enveloping it with grill beef is a total genius!! You get a plethora of different textures and flavour profiles. With every bite, you get crunchiness of the spring roll, smokiness of the grilled beef, green leafy vegetables, and juiciness of the pork filling...all rolled into 1 roll! How could you possibly go wrong? Its a masterpiece like that of the mona lisa! We also tried the beef curry. Succulent pieces of beef slowly simmered rich thai curry sauce, Complimented by soft jasmine rice. Not a vietnamese dish, but executed with perfection. Curry was rich and robust. Quality coconut Milk and curry paste was used. Now..unto the pho!!! the ultimate test of an excellent Vietnamese restaurant is the PHO. More specifically, the PHO Broth! the PHo here is nothing short of spectacular! You can tell bec of 3 important factors. One, the aroma. Two, the clarity of the soup ( aka i how clear is it). And three, the taste! ( how deep the beef essence is!) This place exceeded expectations and passed with full flying colours! One sip of the broth, reminded me of vietnam. It was absolutely amazing! Head and shoulders above many restaurants in vancouver. Plus, no msg was used. We never felt Thirsty or craving tea. I could tell there was a lot of time, labour, and love invested into making the broth. No shortcuts! Just sheer excellence from chef. I feel very blessed to have been a patron of such fine vietnamese cuisine. Definitely a must try when in the city of Nanaimo. Service was quick and efficient. Will i repeat? As many times as i can! ;) Cheers! Happy eating!

I feel a bit conflicted about leaving a review for a single novelty dessert, but I specifically…read morecame here looking for this one-of-a-kind item! And I haven't seen many other people reviewing it either. So here's a review for others like me. If, like me, you were going to Nanaimo and decided to look up the Nanaimo Bar Trail, you may have seen that the Noodlebox here offers a "Nanaimo bar spring roll." What a cool idea, right? I absolutely had to try it, but we'd already had a big breakfast, so my sister and I popped in here for a quite bite just to try the dessert. And they very kindly gave us three of the spring rolls instead of two, which is a plus! Unfortunately, though, the spring roll tasted... basically nothing like a Nanaimo bar. And I know it's a spring roll and it's going to be different, but this was a spring roll filled with banana and a sprinkling of spices. The custard dip was nice and the portion size was good, but there was nothing chocolatey about it at all, and the overwhelming taste of banana made me wonder if they were just taking a banana dessert spring roll and calling it a Nanaimo bar spring roll. So, while this sounded cool on paper, I did end up feeling that, while it was tasty, it wasn't at all what I had been hoping for. Overall the Noodlebox location seems nice and the staff were friendly, so I can't fault them anything else. I do think I'll make a point to return here for lunch next time I'm in Nanaimo, just so I can give the rest of their food a genuine shot - but we were on a wild dessert quest, and sadly, this point on the list didn't really deliver.

Service was good but the food was horrible, no flavour but oil and Medium spice was way too hot.read more

On a weekend trip to the island my family was hungry on our drive to vic so we decided to stop here…read moreafter getting off the ferry. It's a small establishment with interesting decor. You order from the front counter and are given a number to retrieve your food once it is completed. The young woman at the counter greeted us when we entered and explained the menu items to us a well as any highlights they had going on. After perusing the selections we ordered. Wifey and i ordered a half and half wonton+dumpling soup. Added rice noodles. My mom ordered the cup wonton soup. And my bro ordered..I actually forgot what he ordered. I think he also got half and half with noodles. We were instructed to sit any where we liked in the seating area as it was empty and told we could help our selves to water. There was a glass water dispenser on the counter by the front with glasses stacked beside it for customer access. After waiting awhile our food was ready and we went up to the counter to collect our trays with food. My first bite of the wonton was ok. It was a nice wonton decently sized but not what I would consider big nor small. Flavor was nice I think I ordered shrimp wonton. Though nothing mind blowing imo. The dumpling however.. was super delicious. One of the better dumplings I've tasted in a very long time. The flavor was delicious and joyous. There was a slight ginger flavor permeating my mouth with every bite along with the tenderness and juicyness of the dumpling. The noodles were decent not over cooked but for me didn't add anything other than more sustinenance for my hungry belly. Had I know how delicious the dumplings were I would have only ordered them and them alone!

I was familiar with Cantonese and Szechuan styles of Chinese food, but I'd never heard of Guangxi…read more I'm definitely a convert and need to seek it out! They are known for rice noodles. Unlike Vietnamese bun which is thin like vermicelli, these were quite a bit thicker, almost like a round fettuccine. As appetizers, we had the duck egg rolls. We managed to eat them before taking a picture.... they were finally ground duck in egg roll wrappers. We also had the sliced pork belly with garlic sauce. I remembered to take a picture before it was completely gone! It was one of the most amazing things I've had. It's cooked and thinly sliced pork served cold, with crisp and refreshing julienne carrots and cucumber. It's served with a thin dressing that includes fresh garlic. The whole thing is cool, sharp, refreshing, and satisfying. Finally, I had the noodles. I borrowed somebody else's picture, because I forgot to take it before I dumped the toppings in. It comes with two or three different kinds of pickles, toasted soybeans, and green onions. The idea is to stir those into the noodles and eat them first, like a cool noodle salad. Then... you dump the broth on top and enjoy them like a Ramen or a noodle soup. It was absolutely amazing. As a Texan, I'm no stranger to spicy food, but somehow the spicy broth caught me at the back of my throat rather than just the tongue. You should definitely give this place a try! It felt authentic.. most of the customers in there appeared to be Asian, which is usually a good sign.
