Apparently they don't serve steamed rice? Confusing. Anyways, vegan options are a bit subpar.

The interior is big, clean and modern decor. Menu is big with delicious options and reasonable prices. Food also came out quickly! My only feedback would be is if they had some photos on their menu to be more clear as to what the dishes are and how they are prepared.

What's appealing here is that their Instagram advertises daily specials so you can get some dishes for a great discount (like 40% off). We tried the braised combo (pork ear, pork intestines, fish cake), Taiwanese egg wrap, braised pork sauce rice with deep fried pork chop, and yam taro mochi balls. The braised combo is pretty solid - I didn't really like the funkiness to the intestines (I generally enjoyed it in barbecue settings) but the fish cake was fantastic. I also liked the texture of the pork ears. The Taiwanese egg wrap was a bit tasteless, so I wouldn't recommend. Braised pork sauce rice is the lu ruo fan which is a large portion with seaweed, bean sprouts, and soup on the side. Pork chop was flavorful and juicy but not crispy batter, which is okay. Yam taro mochi balls were sweet and chewy. I don't like taro but I loved this dessert! Service is okay. They give a water jug for self pour but the water jug was of questionable cleanliness. The specials were not discounted so we called it out and we weren't told that we had to put the order with a server, not the QR code, so it was a strange interaction. They ended up honoring the discount. Also, they shut down ordering 1 min before 10:30pm - guess they didn't want more money as we wanted to order 1 more dish and they preemptively told the kitchen to close. Sure it's fine no big deal, it was a lot of food.

It may be a hidden gem tucked away in Gordon Head! === 2. FOOD For this takeout order we tried... Shrimp Swirl Egg on Rice: As you can see in the pic, there's not a lot of swirl egg in there, but over the dish was pretty good without being too salty. Szechuan Green Beans: They were decent; good flavour, and in my (subjective) opinion, not too spicy. === 3. SERVICE It seems like one can converse in English or Chinese; the staff certainly spoke Chinese to each other even if most of the patrons were non-Chinese. They all wear masks - in a respectful manner per the Chinese culture. Service was reasonably quick. === 4. ENVIRONMENT Was this a western diner-style family restaurant before? I'm not sure, but it doesn't fit the typical Chinese restaurant stereotype. Dark interior with the old-school lights over the tables suggest it was perhaps an ABC Country restaurant or some other diner-ish establishment before. Regardless, those with wheelchairs and baby strollers can fit in just fine and parking is somewhat plentiful outside in the shopping complex lot.

It was a bit spicy and peppery but the spices were not too overwhelming. The Har Gaw and Sui Mai dim sum were really good too. The service was very attentive and the servers were friendly. We will definitely go back.

Yelp reviews were mixed for restaurants IN Chinatown, so we broadened our search a bit. We found Hope Key just a few blocks outside Chinatown. Yelp reviews were really good, although not as numerous as we had hoped. We decided to give it a shot. We were NOT disappointed! Brenda and her brother James were the most gracious and hospitable hosts. My wife's name is Brenda, which drew an immediate bond and when we found out her husband's name was also Bill, we were instant friends. We ordered the sweet and sour pork over noodles (it was the special that evening) and the spicy szechuan chicken over rice. Both were excellent. We liked the pork better. The chicken was not real spicy, in our estimation. But the flavors were excellent. I'm not sure why they don't have as many reviews, since they've been in this location for 20 years. If you want great Chinese food, try them out!

Mama Wing worked with us to make a menu that worked for our whole family, and she was so delightful every time I spoke with her. There was very few waiters that were working that night making it harder to get the waiters attention. The food on the other hand was good and bad. I ordered the xiao long bao and it was very good. The flavor was on pointe, but the dough felt a little under cooked at the bottom. We had also ordered the potstickers which were amazing. I had ordered the mushu pork. It was good, I had never had it before. The flavor was there, and adding the sauces made it much better. My friend had ordered the mama chicken lollipops. I think she was expecting something else and wasn't satisfied with the quality. She and asked if she could get it taken off the bill as she didn't eat any. I would love to go back and see what recommendations the restaurant has because we didn't know what to order.
