Hands down, the WORST restaurant I've ever been to. Paid 70 bucks for three people, for half the buffet that was sitting under the heat lamp for hours. It was truly disgusting. I don't know where all these good reviews are coming from, probably staff at this place. I wouldn't take my dog there. It's that bad. My kids laughed the whole time at how bad it was, taking pictures and posting them on their social media accounts. Laughable laughable laughable. I order weekly from Hong Kong house as I live just down the road. June 29th 2020 I ordered skip the dishes and it showed up with a bug deep fried right into the batter of a deep fried prawn. At first I was like no way but sure enough it was. I brought it back to Hong Kong house and they gave me a refund. Where is the sanitation??? How do bugs get in the food if the facilities are clean?? Disgusting! And worst part was I told them I was a long time customer and they didn't even offer me anything to encourage me to return. Do not care about their customers. read more

It has definitely gone down hill in our last few trips. It used to be very special, with delicious sauces! We ordered 5 special dishes each time and had it about every three weeks. Then the last few times we stopped raving about it. We found not as much shrimp in the shrimp dishes and the sauces not quite as good and less sauce. The black bean sauce never had the beans, the greens not as much garlic flavour. It was like they were being a little bit stingy with every thing. This is too bad as it was the best Chinese food in town! Change of ownership is showing. read more

Went there for lunch smorgasboard on a Saturday, Very large open concept resturant. Went up for my first plate then a tour bus pulls up full of tourists. It was so indescribably revolting that I find myself absolutely hell bent on warning anyone in, or planning to visit, Nanaimo NEVER to eat at this god forsaken hell-hole, this wretched, stinking, rancid abomination and insult to Chinese cuisine. We ordered spring rolls. I think they were left over from the buffet and quickly refried. The "plum sauce" came in sachets. I knew we were in trouble. The egg fried rice arrived and went cold before any main courses materialised. The meat in the Kung Po Chicken must have come from an extra-special factory. One where they save the fattiest, nastiest scrapings of an intensively reared bird's rectum are collected, frozen, and bagged up for the lowest bidders. The "beef" in the strangely absent black bean sauce was off white / grey. It was about 90% pure fat and gristle. These guys couldn't be using cheaper ingredients if they tried. So this occasion marked the first time I ever got up from my table and told a restaurant's management that I wasn't eating it, and wasn't paying for it. The manageress ranted and raved at us. "We been in business 12 years nobody ever complained." "REALLY! I said. Well as of tonight you can NEVER say that again. Because I'm complaining!" Then she tells me not to get angry. I'm not angry. I'm just insulted that she thinks she can get away with serving us meat that's barely fit for a dog to consume. As I suspected, the anger was all hers. I'd affronted her ego. "We been serving everyone in Nanaimo. Everybody say they like it. Now you say you don't like it. But this is YOUR problem. It is not OUR problem." I hope you're reading this Ms. Manageress. Because I must expose you to as the charlatans that you are. I bet it's your white Mercedes parked outside isn't it? Made from the huge profits derived from 12 years of serving chicken and beef abortions with tinned mushrooms in pre-packaged MSG-ridden sauces and calling it Chinese food to the people of Nanaimo who really, really should know better. Visited Fri March 4 evening. I generally dislike buffets as they encourage binge eating. Don't come here to too often, you'll ruin your girlish figure. Pros Lots of good food around 20-30 items including soups, meats, salad bar and dessert. It's definitely not fine dining, there were several fried items which are a personal weakness :) Place was about 80% full, high-turnover = generally fresher food. Service was acceptable. Ice cream, 6 flavours some were empty tubs and hadn't been replaced yet. Cons Some food trays were empty, guess it's hard for them to keep up with all the guests. They don't bother to seat you, you look for an available table on your own which kind of sucks walking around aimlessly. As the servers clear your plates, their server station is clearly visible so I could see the pile of garbage/scraps and it did not look appetizing haha. You have to walk up to the cashier to pay by credit card. Parking lot was full and hard to find a spot. Damage - $56.55 for 3 adults. Protip - I think they had the same price for weekdays and weekends which is good. Some buffets charge different pricing on weekdays and weekends. read more

Well if you are looking for an "all you can eat" buffet then this may be the place to go in Nanaimo. Many selections make it difficult to try them all without stuffing yourself. Food was hot, Ginger fried Pork was fantastic as well as duck, sweet and sour pork, breaded Almond chicken and shrimp dishes. Good selection at the salad bar and cake and ice cream too. My favourite all you can eat buffet/take out Chinese food restaurant on the island. The food is always consistent and I can look forward to the same experience each time, I think it would be really cool if the restaurant got a facelift! something new and brighter. The ONLY problem I have with the Hong Kong house is that I checked out the health inspection report on it and it was rather appetite killing. Unfortunately I value my safety more than a big plate of chow mien and will not continue to dine in or out of this restaurant until they are given a low rating on the inspection! read more

Had been to the Hong Kong house many times over the years. It has been ok and sometimes really good. Lunch yesterday with my elderly mom, my wife and my sister was terrible. We had the buffet. We arrived at about 12:30 so the selection should have been good. It was not and what was there had been sitting since they put it out . Dried out or soggy! They got 1 star for the soup. it took 4 visits to get a refund we hate the place and will never go again!!!!!! a new server got hired, she forgot to turn the heat on the buffet, everything was ice cold we did not eat left everything on the plate and they made our friend pay and it was her birthday. they tried to charge our friend for 4 people and only 2 ate but they charged her for 3. it took 4 visits before the owner would pry the 20 bucks from her greedy till and refund the birthday girl for a dinner that was not eaten. read more

Went on a Tuesday night and it was quite busy, always a good sign. The buffet had a good variety and the food was.hot and fresh. The restaurant was clean and the service good for a buffet. Ordered takeout and was told it would be 25mins. Knowing they would be busy on a Saturday night I took my time and arrived about 35mins after ordering. I was told it would just be a "little bit longer" and 35mins after I paid, I finally got my food. Over an hour to prepare my few dishes seemed a bit much considering they were already cooking for a buffet. Quality was ok but found a nice sharp chicken bone in my Chow Mein. JWe ordered a meal for 3 and a couple extra dishes tonight. Not only was it way more expensive at the door than the menu online stated but it had to be the worst food that we have had in a long time. The Beef Chow Fun was over cooked and tasteless, the Chow Mein is the most horrible we've ever had, dry and gross. The deep fried shrimp weren't clean and a total turn off. Sweet and sour pork, swimming in juice. The only thing that had any sort of flavor was the chop suey, and it was nothing to write home about.. $75 for a dinner for 4, no seconds, no leftovers. Was a horrible dining experience. There was a long black curly hair in the chop suey of the smorg. The serivce was horrible. The waitress just came over pulled it out, put it on the floor, and then walked away. The managers were very rude when we said we weren't going to pay for food we didn't eat because we were too disgusted. They were all yelling away don't even come back and what not and then they threw the change at my dad and the counter then walked away. Huge selection and they are constantly keeping the dished full to the brim. I would call it a nice standard Chinese restaurant. Very busy on weekends and not bad during weekdays. I would easily recommend this to someone. read more
