The mead is delicious, the people working there are very knowledgeable and helpful and the classes are highly informative.

Awesome, hyperlocal spot run by people who are passionate about their product and happy to impart…read moreall that mead knowledge you never even knew you wanted as you enjoy your quaffs. Until recently, I had only tasted mead in Ireland and known it as a sickly-sweet beverage. But these are subtle, flavorful, crafted meads. My absolute favorite was the Queens, which reminded me almost of a dry fino Sherry or complex, rich, dry white. They also mix up some fine mead-based cocktails, including an excellent Raspberry Lemonade with a raspberry-tinged mead mixed with seltzer and fresh-squeezed lemon juice. I'm generally a beer person and was a bit skeptical, but was totally sold (literally - walked out of here with a couple of bottles and some paraphernalia.) The space is industrial yet cool - more like visiting a brewery than a winery. They have board games as well as a gravelly outdoor area where you can hang on a nice day. Only weekend hours for now as the business (hopefully) grows, but a great place to hang and sample something new and high-quality, or pop-in for a cool take-away gift. Whether you're already a fan, or if all you know of mead is some Viking or Renaissance Faire crap (though in Addition to classic glassware, they do also sell a goblet if that is indeed you thing), you simply must stop in this excellent new spot. Only opened on weekends for now. They could use some better signage - we did drive past before doubling-back to find it - but this is a place we'll worth finding and trying.

Clean, neat, quiet... tanks in tasting room-nice products. Go for the Meadjito! Tasty!!read more

Especially for someone who likes cider and wine, the Meade has a nice, refreshing flavor. The different flavor nodes of the honey make it sweeter and not bitter (personal preference). Awesome sit in areas with TONS of games for socialization with friends. In this order are my favorites!! Wally, Whip, Lemon, Bouchot, Ginga, Cherry, Hoppy, Pecan

Bergen House is a craft meadery that opened in Middletown, Connecticut in September 2020. It was…read morefounded by army veteran Talon Bergen. He first began experimenting with homebrewing when his brother-in-law gifted him a Mr. Beer kit. The first batch of Bergen's homebrew was awful, but the kit came with an interesting book that he read over and over again. He soon became fascinated with the science behind brewing and fermentation. Later on, a friend gifted him a bottle of homemade mead. Bergen's wife Emilie liked it much more than any beer she ever tried, so he decided to try his hand at crafting mead. Mead is a fermented beverage made from a mixture of honey, water and yeast. It is the oldest fermented beverage known to man (predating beer, wine and cider). Like his first batch of beer, Bergen's first batch of mead was also awful. After several months, Bergen finally began making mead that was drinkable. The Bergens later had an idea to open their own brewery. After seeing how many breweries that Connecticut already had, they instead decided to open a meadery. The Bergens found a space in Middletown's old trolley barn building to house their meadery and taproom. Although not the state's only meadery, Bergen House is the only one to have its own taproom for on-site consumption. I recently visited Bergen House for the first time after going for a long bike ride on the nearby Air Line State Park Trail. I was greeted by Emilie Bergen who was very friendly and talked to me about the different meads. There were eight different meads on tap during my visit. Each one has different spices and fruits added for flavoring. I ordered a sampler flight which featured "Crime Scene" (Rye Bourbon Barrel-Aged Sweet & Sour Cherry Mead), "Local Buzz" (Dry Mead made with local honey from Hilltop Apiaries), "Wally" (Off-Dry Mead made with wildflower honey, green tea and Citra hops), and "Grapefruit Meads Business" (Wildflower Mead flavored with rosemary, grapefruit & ginger). The latter two were my favorites! Emilie also gave me a small sample of "Bochet": a traditional French Mead made with wildflower honey caramelized before fermentation. I ended up taking home a growlito of "Wally", which tasted a lot like a honey-infused New England IPA. I had a great experience at Bergen House and I look forward to returning!

We arrived around noon w out a tasting reservation but got lucky there were spots available. We were greeted by a very friendly staff member outside and told us they had a jazz fest going. Music later and complimentary Mardi Gras necklaces etc! We went into the shop for our tasting. Gift shop and wines etc so nicely done arranged available for purchase.. We had a seat at the tasting bar and had a wonderful time choosing and tasting wine and spirits. I love how u can mix and match and try wine spirits beer and canned mixers. $16 pp including a wine glass. We added a cheese cracker plate for $8. Cheese was yummy! Loved it. Attentive and knowledgeable staff. The pours were once ounce and they did feel on the smaller side, and would have preferred a tasting w a bit more but that's just me! Highly recommend, will do the wine tour next time. We had reservations at J's Restaurant which was excellent. Afterwards we sat at a table to listen to the live jazz music. There was a QR code to order food and drinks. Will definitely give that a try next time. Beautiful location and staff always smiling.

I was pleasantly surpirsed to get seated with no reservation for a party of 2. I do recommend having a reservation though as it can get busy. The atmosphere is great for people who like sitting outdoors on a nice day as there are a ton of tables with umbrellas to keep people cool. You are able to scan a QR code to order anything off the menu and the service is great as the staff brings you the drinks to your table. For food they will text you when to pick up from kiosk. As for the drinks my friend and I both got the sangria, raspberry bellini, and fall sampler. All of the drinks were really refreshing and worth the price. The charcuterie and pretzel bites we got were also great for a nice winery day and the menu is pretty expansive so I want to try some other items in future visits. There were a lot of bees at some of the tables near where I sat and they often crowed the drinks and food so that it something to note. I definitely plan to come back next summer!
