I always have great experiences with meaderies and whenever I sit down to write a review for one I always give it high marks. Moonlight Meadery is no exception to this at all and the mead we had with them was excellent. The mead Steve and I had was the Kurt's Apple Pie. As the name implies it was apple oriented and despite that it didn't taste much like a cider. It was mead all the way which made it all the more fabulous. So glad I stopped in again, Sheldon was very knowledgeable and patient as I asked questions to learn about the process of making mead. The science of fermenting is just that science. I had a basic knowledge but he was so informative I walked away smiling that my 30 minutia there were well worth the time. I definitely recommend a stop here even if you're only mildly curious. Most meads are available for a small tasting fee of $3 for a one Oz. pour. I purchased three bottles which were priced at $22 - 25 per bottle. This is the best mead I have ever had in my life! It is worth every penny! They also make hard cider that is fantastic!! The tastings are fun and informative! We've only been to the Londonderry location but are looking forward to going to their farm and experiencing all that has to offer! We've gifted these meads and our gifts have been very well received! The staff have always been fun, kind, informative, and helpful! The Londonderry location tour was great! The huge vats (is that what they are called?) are impressive! Delicious!! We stopped by after tasting Moonlight Meadery's Little Apple cider at White Mountain Cider Co in NH. The cider was delicious and left me wanting more. I booked a reservation online and ordered a small flight for tasting upon arrival. Seating is provided in the back near the brewing equipment which was cool to see. Having never tried mead before I was unsure of what flavors to start with, but the gentleman behind the counter was knowledgeable and helpful. The mead was absolutely delicious! It has a slightly think texture that lightly coats the tongue. It was much sweeter than expected for the abv of around 14%. From my limited experience with alcohol the mead reminded me of a desert wine; fairly sweet and not something to binge. Overall, they offered tons of flavors, each delicious. read more

This place started branching off and making both beer and ciders too, so theres a ton of different things to try when you come here. I recommend Kurts apple pie mead, monkey bread mead, red dress mead, fling, coffee in bed, and the thirteen-5 cider. Definitely worth grabbing a couple of bottles here before you leave. Moonlight Meadery - Flight of 9 1oz pours for $14. - Meaderies Near Me - Pittsfield, New Hampshire

This wasn't at all what I expected - but still very interesting, and more importantly, tastey. I came here after picking up a living social deal - it included a tour and tasting along with a store credit. But, you can take the tour and have a tasting for $5 without it. What to expect: This has the feel of a store front, and is housed in a commercial block of office/store space. You walk in to a very clean store front with a bar on one side, and lots of little bottles of meade on shelves. You won't be blown away at this point - especially if you had let your imagination run away, thinking of a big bee keepers farm and knights and fare maidens... The tour takes you to the back of the store into a giant garage (he actually expanded and took over the next door garage knocking out to the wall to make a huge garage) where the brewing takes place. You get an overview of the history of Moonlight Meadery, how meade is made, and he shows off the equipment along with a few anecdotes about getting the business started (not knowing how to use the lable maker is my favorite). It's amazing how fast they've grown. At the end is the tasting - and this makes the drive worth it. You choose a half dozen or so of their meades to try. These range from dry to sweet, straight meade (just honey and water) to Mojo (a must buy) which is mojito inspired. He even has a $50 bottle of meade that is aged in an oak caske originally used by Sam Adams to make there Utopia brew. As a tip - make sure you have a piece of paper or a great memory to keep track of which ones you like - cause I doubt you will leave without at least buing a bottle or half dozen, even though they are not cheap (he uses a bottle about half the size of a wine bottle, and I think they start at about 12 bucks. It is stronger than wine, so the small bottles are probably a good thing) its hard to resist. If you like meade, haven't had meade before, or are in need of a bunch of creative gifts - moonlight is worth the drive. The place could use a bit more personality - but the sheer quality of the meade more than makes up for this. read more

Came here with Groupon on a Saturday. They were understaffed and told us so, but they managed alright. Fun to learn about how mead is made since it's not a common alcoholic beverage. We got to try 7 samples each. Delicious unusual ones like the sour mead Curiosity were my favorites. Mead here starts at 12% abv and then increase from there. Keep in mind their mead is pricey and you'll be paying $15 (and up to $24) per bottle for a 375 ml bottle (which is exactly half the size of a wine bottle). We made the 1 hour drive from boston here after having a sample of the delicious mead (honey wine) at a tasting. Just couldn't get e-'nuff. It's slightly in the middle of nowhere and once you get inside, it's slightly awkward. No music. A little bit of an uncomfortable host, but once you get tasting some of the 40 meads they have, all the anxiety drips away... The owner's son led us through, allowing us to sample as many as we wanted. He answered all our questions and also slapped some mead knowledge upon us (with a smile o' course). Some of our favorites: Mischief, Kurt's Apple Pie, Almond, Utopian (aged in Sam Adam's Utopia barrels!). **though i have to say some of the names are a little ridiculous- i.e. sensual, fling, desire? ** Then we went on a brief tour of their facility. They just moved in Nov' 10 and are rapidly expanding. It was exciting to see a local business doing so well! The half bottles are $15-20 because of the higher alcohol content (13-16%). All and all, three of us bought 5 bottles and really enjoyed our trip out! They're open 11AM - 7PM Wednesday - Sunday if you're having a whim of honey and road trips... read more

Visited Moonlight Meadery this past weekend for a tasting. (We each did the large for $8 per person - you get 6+ samples.) It's a unique experience. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and is obviously passionate about their craft. You will find everything from lightly sweet blends to a few that would rival a sugar level of great grandma's pies... Whatever your preference, you'll find it. My favorite was their "Indulge." It's a vanilla, Cinnamon, orange blossom-flavored mead - not too sweet, but a perfect dessert-esque treat. Seriously, it blew my socks off. Pair that divine substance with some tasty, savory cheeses, and you could do some epic culinary damage... Only con to our visit was that the location is a wee bit hard to find... you'll likely drive past it. Perhaps a lovely and large sign could be considered by the proprietors in the future. :) Put this one on your list. read more

I've done mead tastings at a number of spots in a few states, but these were by far the best I've had. We got a private tour for just our group of three, and then got to continue through the whole tasting experience with that same guide. Really a lot of personalized attention, which made a big difference. Each of us got a tasting, which was organized in categories of four, which let us choose 3 of the 4 in each group and try a sip of most of their meads. Really astounding selection, with some great flavors. They're also producing two ciders now as well, which they poured us tastes of in addition to the meads. I've gotta say - my review is right in step with everyone else's. I found out about Moonlight due to the Living Social deal, but will definitely be going back again. The tour is short, but interesting. We learned a lot about the history of mead, and got to hear about some of the different processes they use to get flavors in their mead. And then the fun part - the tasting! Honestly, I never knew that mead came in any other flavor besides sweet honey. I ended up buying 3 bottles, and my friend bought 2. Grabbed a Groupon for 6 friends to check out this meadery for a little day trip and well worth it! It's a small place, which oftentimes is more fun for tours since you get a more personal experience with the staff. While we were waiting for our tour to start, we tried the honey samples along with the cheese and crackers and jam (made from mead! Definitely bought one to-go). It was amazing to see how many different types of meads there were. Going along with the "Romance by the glass" catch phrase, they have fun, 'racy' names to go with the variety. The tour itself was brief but informative. Meads are not very popular - most people don't really know what it is, so the tour was helpful to grow an appreciation for it. Afterwards, we were able to sample a LOT of different meads (there is a section for notes in the pamphlet for a reason. Use it! You'll forget what you liked if you don't make note!) The location was a little confusing to find since it is in what appears to be a industrial park but we found it without too much trouble. We were given a really informative and interesting tour by the owner/founders son which was much appreciated. Had a great time at this hidden gem after snagging a Groupon for Moonlight Meadery tour. I had seen the brand in grocery stores, but didn't realize the location had tours, tasting room and a store front. You can pick up anything they offer in the store- bottles and bottles of honey gold. So what to expect: this place has mead. Not 1 or two kinds, but over 30 kinds of mead. Its amazing and almost overwhelming. This completely changed my perception of mead. The tour was definitely an education ( I assumed all were sweet) Moonlight had spicy mead, flowery mead, apple, blueberry- the list just goes on and on. They provide you with a healthy sampling of their flavors. It was a great way to spend the afternoon and I will go back to purchase more bottles due to the awesome variety. read more

Last year for Valentine's Day, I bought my boyfriend the Groupon for the Moonlight Meadery tour and tasting. Well, thanks to a busy year of working and traveling, we weren't able to take advantage of the deal until Valentine's weekend of this year. We ventured up to Londonderry to check it out, and when we got there, we were just in time to join another couple for a tasting. Lucky for us, our tasting and tour were guided by the owner of the meadery, Michael. He was able to go into detail on some of the meads and give us the backstory on how they came to be. All of meads we tasted were delicious, and we even got to keep our tasting glasses. The tour wasn't extensive, but seeing as the business continues to grow, I'm sure there will be more to see in the very near future. Michael told us about the mead making process and showed us how he makes it, stores it and bottles it. I was very appreciative that Michael was willing to honor our Groupon even though I bought it a year ago. We took home a few bottles and have already gotten in to them! Moonlight Meadery is an overall okay experience. We made reservations for a Friday at 10AM as we had other places we wanted to visit on the same day. When we arrived we went into the tasting room and waited, and waited, nobody was anywhere to be found. We yelled hello still no one. We then had to call the business and finally got ahold of someone and stated that we had a tasting reservation at 10 and nobody was anywhere to be found. Someone then came down the stairs and said "oh I didn't know anybody was here, we normally don't have people this early". If this is the mentality they are going to have then they should adjust their hours to noon to not have morning reservations. The mead was okay, nothing spectacular. The outside area is in a parking lot so nothing extravagant, however they are dog friendly and there is outdoor seating which is a plus in COVID times. I am not sure if they have food, as they did not offer us any. If you are in the area it is worth checking this place out, but I wouldn't make a special trip. read more

My wife and I do a lot of brewery tasting. Moonlight is certainly one of our favorite. The tour is quaint (it' s a very small space) but the people who run it are excellent and make the whole thing worth it. Their mead is just out of this world. Went here with my wife for the tour/tasting. The meads are great - a few dozen different kinds to choose from so everyone will find something they like. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. My one small complaint is that it's a little disorganized. We came in (no reservations needed according to MM) for the "romantic package" we found on a Groupon deal. Had no idea what to expect really, but it seemed that there was no difference between this and the regular tour. No one ever asked us what tour we were doing, etc. People joined the tour late which was a little annoying when the guide stopped and caught them up. And When we got to the tasting, the 6 people who got the spots at the bar pretty much controlled the tastings, conversation, etc. These are smaller issues but they seem easily resolved - starting tours at specified times (or having reservations) and having different tasting stations or at least have the guide ask people to cycle in and out from the bar. Bottom Line: Great tour, great mead. Aside from the small annoyances I would highly recommend this. read more

If you are a Maizer and live/visit near Londonderry, you NEED to come check out Moonlight Meadery. Michael Fairbrother was their and personally gave us a tour of the operation. He tells a very inspirational story of how he got to be where he is in the business. You can tell this guy is passionate about what he does. His mead is great, my favorites were Temerity and Fury. I would reccomend trying the Utopia for a little extra $. Chances are you wont come accross anything like that anytime soon. It's a traditional style mead fermented to 18% and aged for 4 years in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels. GOOD STUFF! I actually liked the presentation. Mead has a very small demographic, when you walk into the meadery its a very personal experience. And at the rate Moonlight is growing it may not fell like that for too long. So get there while you can. And buy a case of mead! read more

Terrible presentation. The meadery is a small unit in a business plaza. When you first walk in walk in you come to the common room where they serve the wine and where the next tour waits to begin. When our tour time came we were escorted to the back, where with all boxes and labeling and bottling and barreling equipment were stored. We were given a decent sized menu of wines ( 25-30) but were told we could only have 6 of them. The tasting was the funniest part though. Each time we chose a wine to taste (1 out of each of 6 groups), we were poured less than a sip of wine, so little you could barely get used to the taste. And get this, they didn't even clean out the glass or anything between drinks to wash out the taste of the last wine / mead. As for the wines, I really cant complain. Most were sweet/semisweet. They have a nice blend of flavors including honey, vanilla, fruits and berries. My favorite was the apple pie. There is one wine with ghost peppers. Good but in small does. Probably torture at the dinner table. read more

Wow, that was unexpected! Visiting NH over Labor Day, my sister found a groupon for Moonlight Meadery. "Well I can't say I've ever actually seen a Meadery. Let's check it out..." They do brief tours (because there's really only a couple rooms to show), and then great tastings! We probably tried 25 different flavors of mead. We also ended up buying a few bottles! The staff there was great. Super friendly & really just seem to love hanging out there making mead. It definitely made the experience that much better! However, it is a small, intimate operation with staff that is very passionate about their craft and attentive to customers. We received a personal, 20 minute tour followed by a tasting; it is not a big facility nor a big tasting room. However, Chris was very engaging and knowledgeable, going through a lot of interesting detail. Definitely has a boutique, personal feel. Enjoyed it for a morning excursion. Never been to a meadery before. I have been living in California for 5 years and have lived in Napa valley, Lodi and now Ramona valley wine regions so this was a new thing for sure. There is a lot of variety of meads they produce from sweet to floral to spicy meads. I would definitely clear your palate in between taste because some can tend to overlap and because of the sheer amount you are tasting I'd definitely keep notes so you can find what you truly liked. The best was the apple variety for sure for me but then again I am partial to ciders. It is a small quaint tasting room so if you're interested in having some elbow room I'd try going during the week. Be careful you don't drive by, it's in an inconspicuous area with industrial building fronts. read more

A few weeks ago I purchased a living social deal for a tour, tasting, glassware and $10 store credit for the Moonlight Meadery in New Hampshire. So on Saturday, I decided to take the road trip to Londonderry. We arrive around 6pm and are immediately ushered into the production area for a tour of the Meadery with the assistant Mead Maker. He gave us a very in-depth history of Mead, the process of making mead, and the specific history of this meadery, all of which I knew very little about. Here are a few facts: The head mead maker of Moonlight, Michael Fairbrother, started brewing beer at home about 20 years, and mead about 16 years ago. A few years ago, he decided to start a small operation out of his garage, using 5 gallon carboys, and started selling out of bottles immediately. Two years ago, they set up shop in their current location- which they have renovated several times- and now have two large warehouse spaces and a really nice tasting room. They get their honey from a distributor in New Hampshire- but not all the honey is local from NH because the Meadery actually uses more honey than the state of New Hampshire can produce. But honey comes first from NH, then from the Northeast, then from elsewhere in the US. Most of the honey is wildflower honey, which means that the bees pollenate all sorts of different kinds of flowers. But some of their honey is single varietal honey, which means of all the flowers the bees pollenate, 70% of the flowers have to be the same kind of flower. The honey gets shipped in huge containers and then gets pumped into the fermenters, add water, any desired fruit flavors and then yeast. After fermentation, it gets pumped to the bottling tank and is bottled- basically by hand with the help of a few not very high tech machines. Moonlight also has purchased 20 bourbon barrels from Sam Adams's Utopia beer series and some from Allagash' Curieux beer, are aging some of their meads in them. (and selling them for $50/bottle!) After the tour, we head to the tasting room, where we can each taste 6-8 meads of like 30 that they had available to taste (obviously no one was counting because we ended up trying 19). Here they are all lined up ready to be tasted: So we got our glasses filled and drank a lot of delicious mead. Here are the lucky ones that got graced by my palette: Wild- wildflower honey and blueberries- sparkling, good/light blueberry flavor, dry, delicious. 1.25 Blissful- honey, black currant, blueberry, black raspberry- port-like, very sweet, but not to syrupy. 2 Fling- (from the description- "menage a trios between honey, strawberries and rhubarb"), made with orange blossom honey- very good, can distinctly taste the strawberries and the rhubarb. Reminds me of Cape Ann's Sunrise Saison. 1.75 Red Dress- honey and red currants. very tart flavor. 3 Sumptous- honey and mangos. amazing mango flavor, delicious, refreshing. 1.5. Desire- honey, blueberries, black cherries, black currants. nice fruit flavors, again sweet but not too syrupy. 2.25 Kurt's Apple Pie- made from local early harvest apple cider, madagasgar vanilla bean, and Vietnamese cinnamon (the best quality cinnamon apparently). definitely tastes like apple pie, I can almost taste the whipped cream on the pie. 2.5 Coffee in Bed- honey and coffee. way too strong of a coffee flavor for me, very bitter. 3 Paramour- honey, blackberries, blueberries, black cherries, currants. light and sweet, very good. 2 Madagascar- honey and vanilla. woody vanilla flavor. Would be delicious with a creamy dessert. Has a coconut/oaky flavor (almost like Kentucky bourbon barrel ale) 1.25 Flutter- honey and ginger. light ginger flavor, little tingly like ginger, floral scent, just a tiny bit sweet. 2.5 Blossom- honey and apple cider (early season apples). light crisp tartness. 2.25 Deviant- honey, apple, ginger- like a ginger beer- very gingery, and nice apple flavor. 2.25 Mischief- honey, black raspberry. like an after dinner liqueur. very flavorful. 2. Fury- made with 3 different kinds of peppers sweeter and nice spicy flavor. tingly on tongue. very interesting taste. better than spicy beers I've had. 1.75 Mojo- orange blossom honey, mint and lime. modeled after a mojito. Tastes too sweet, like simple syrup in a margarita. 2.75 Frisky- blueberries, maple syrup. tastes like an oaky wine. 2.5 Utopia- made in the utopia barrels. oaky flavor. crazy aftertaste. very flavorful. 2. Virtue- appley deliciousness. 1.5 All in all, I had a lovely experience here.
