There is no justification for putting the cream cheese in plastic container and using a plastic knife to put the cream cheese on my bagel. That plastic will exist for the next 450 years. What a sweet spot right off the highway! I have no idea what other reviews are talking about with unfriendliness; this place was overflowing with welcome. I was greeted right away when I walked in, even though I was clearly an out-of-towner who had just pulled off the highway. Everyone else in the spot were locals; the servers knew their names and anticipated their baked good preferences. For me, I ordered the omelette sammy and a diet soda. The omelette sammy was delicious and perfectly cooked. Got a lemon bar to go which was also fantastic. There's almost nothing like this right off the highway, anywhere. We've been going to Norma J's for the past two years and as much as we love supporting local businesses, and Norma is nice, it's just the service has gone down hill. I've been a server in NYC for IHOP, busy upper east side clubs and restaurants and understand the struggle, but this is a far cry for help. We understand everyone suffered from the pandemic and prices everywhere have gone up- but at least be kind to your customers. The store is beautiful and clean, and everything is actually pretty good, except the service. Today we walked in and on the menu they have smoothies- now they do not have any just a coffee shake for $7! The lox is $12, the stuffed French toast is $13, they even charged extra for a cream cheese- you need to communicate with your customers and stop nickel and diming us. I bought a pumpkin spice iced coffee this afternoon and the cup broke as I was putting cream and sugar in it and it broke and spilled everywhere- instead of paying attention to your customers, the girls were playing with the other children- then when asked for napkins to clean up she said "Don't waste those!!" We were only trying to help. Either way we've tried bringing our friends and family here but we are consistently disappointed every time. Every penny, and clearly napkin is counted and it ALWAYS feels like we're doing THEM a favor by coming in. Small businesses should be glad they're still open post pandemic and grateful that we're supporting them than a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts. If you want to over spend money for donuts, sugar cookies, toasted lox bagels, mediocre omelettes and French toast- Come here- or go down the street and go to Stewart's or Dunkin Donuts- they at least service you with a smile. Norma Js I still have hope for you and we do want to keep supporting you, but you got a lot of work to do, hire more servers, cooks, bakers, communicate with guests, use alternative high grade sugar and ingredients and smile more. Bakeries are supposed to be fun and enjoyable, have more events for the community and local individuals. Even give extra goods, breads to the homeless community in our neighborhood. Good brewed coffee of different roasts. Don't be fooled by the classic diner machine, the coffee doesn't sit around long enough to burn. We tried the maple nut and blueberry muffins. They do have a gluten-free rack, but it was empty in the afternoon. We hear the pancake is the size of a plate and pretty great. read more

We had a simple breakfast/brunch (bagel egg sandwich with meat omelette and home fries) and although they were closing their kitchen, as a courtesy still made us some pancakes! Have driven past the restaurant a few times, but never stopped. Today we decided to go in, and it was crazy busy. There were two waitresses. Ours was the skinny brunette. And let me tell you I was less than impressed. I would tell you her name but she never told us. She was NOT friendly, and frankly gave poor service. I realize they were busy, so I don't expect to be waited on hand and foot - but atleast smile and seem like you were happy to be there. The food was ok. Nothing to write home about, just your typical diner food. I'll give this place another try in the future, but their first impression was not very good. read more

My brother and I went to Norma Js today. He had a grilled cheese sandwich. There was only cheese in the middle of the sandwich and the outside of the sandwich it was very dried out. He only ate 1 bite of it I had what they called a Thanksgiving turkey melt. The turkey was like 2 sm chicken patties. The turkey was very dried out and I considered it unpalatable. I ate 2 bites cause I had already taken my insulin and I left a negative review on the restaurant and noticed my review was deleted We both ordered French fries. They were not freshly cooked. They were very dried out, like it was the bottom of the fries. I ate 1 bite and was not impressed. They were very dried out We called Norma over to our table. She stated we got what we ordered She did give us 1 meal free and 10% off my meal. I pd over $16 for a meal that was probably the worst meal I've ever ordered out In addition, there was a table with chairs. We asked to sit there because my brother just had back surgery and would not be comfortable at a makeshift table with poor bar stools. We were both very uncomfortable with this seating arrangement esp since there was an empty table which we were told was reserved. I Really want to rate this place higher. The food is actually pretty good when you get it hot. I feel like this is a training issue. As the place isnt ever that buisy. It just simply doesnt hold enough seats for the cook to get backed up. theres seating for 20 people tops realistically, i mean you can fit more but it would be crammed and its rare that ive ever seen more than 10 people there at one time. The menu consists of quick short order items so theres really no excuse. Im not sure if its a matter of training or under staffing where the cook is also responsible for washing the dishes and the prep work. But i have done years of short order cooking and something just doesnt add up. Ill order a stack of pancakes, eggs toast and bacon and my girlfriend will order and omlet and toast and it'll take 40+ minutes for it to come out to the table. At any given time the cook is only working on 3-4 orders at a time and thats nothing really. Its all about managing your time and multi tasking. also i know the watress's try hard and i dont hold it against them. but a lot of the times i wont even see a refill for coffee during my meal. this isnt an isolated incident. it pretty much happens every time we go to eat there. my gf loves the place, so i go with her. I really want to love this place. I really truelly dig greasy spoon, mom and pop breakfast places. those are the places i love to eat. But the time between ordering and getting your food is just too long most of the time and like i said a lot of the times it will be completely cold or half of the items will be cold. Some times are really better than others. So i suggest only going here if you have a few hours to kill and arnt too particular about your food. Im just saying i shouldnt be able to order Perkins breakfast through door dash living 15 minutes by car and get my food quicker and warmer than my usual order from normas. read more
