Dr elloway should have his licence pulled. He's made an utter mess out of every filling I've had done. He's rough and heavy handed. After my last session at his office I was spitting blood for the rest of the night. His bedside manner is beyond atrocious. I asked him to use a topical anesthetic before applying the novocaine and he denied me. I have an anxiety disorder and I'm especially threatened by needles. He scoffed at my suggestion and threatened me, saying if I didn't "appreciate his work" that I should go to the dental clinic instead. Dr. Norman Elloway's office is a real trip. Initially, I couldn't find the office so I went on Yelp to look for the adderess. I came across some reviews.. as you can see, I became hesitant. But I knew, I needed a filling and it would be FREE with my insurance. Walking in, the place smelled strange and I headed straight to the receptionist. She was very friendly- also, missing a tooth. There were many pamphlets about Jesus and Sirius XM "The Message" a Christian Rock station, was singing to me about the Blood of Christ. Really made me feel great... Didn't wait long, they called my name. I was next. I got escorted into the room, and I kinda of dug the 1990s dental decor. Paintings of ducks and songs about Jesus, I was entertained by this place and the atmosphere. Then he entered the room. Dr. Norman Elloway. He had arrived. I was stoked. I watched him put on his gloves before he began his masterpiece. He had this syringe thing, and I thought he was going to shoot me up with nocacaine. I asked, "Whatcha doin'?" He said, "It's not a shot." My troubles were eased. He began his work, and then his phone began to buzz. Every time it vibrated, I felt it. He answered it. He had a brief conversation with a man, who I could hear clearly, about corn and soybeans. Once he hung up, he continued his work. After my filling was filled, they showed me my new look in the mirror. Everything looked great, except I felt a serious lump on the back of my tooth. So- I took up all the courage I had- and said, "Dr. Norman Elloway, there's a lump on the back of my tooth." He looked at me, maybe he had never been talked back to before, but he knows teeth and he knows a job well done. He fixed the lump and I checked out the mirror once more. The front of my tooth was not sanded down properly, and I was scared to ask for more help. I saw him, about to leave the office. However, all of Jesus music made me feel courageous and strong. I used my voice and asked for more help. Begrudgingly, he turned back before he walked out of the office and came to my aid. Leaving the office, I know I'll never go back. But I'm so thankful that it was free, and that Dr. Norman Elloway was there for me and all of the residents of Northern California who don't have health coverage from their employers. I'm sorry to say this because while Norman was very nice I am in no way trusting him with my dental procedure. My cleaning was done by one of his staff members and it was very good, no problems there. Although I am Christian, I was made very uncomfortable by all of the catholic and other religious pamplets everywhere, bible study solicitations and the jesus music playing.... I will be paying through the nose to have a proper oral surgeon do my extractions but I'd rather be safe than sorry. read more

I was referred to this dentist to get a crown. I can't believe he is still in business with these reviews. 20 years ago I was sitting in his chair and he started work and then started yelling and screaming about his wife divorcing him and how Medi-Cal people never Pay enough, he went on and on. I reported him to everybody I could! I can't believe that he is allowed to practice. I have since been told the root canal he did was not finished all the way to the bottom of the root and will someday have to be redone! After going to Fourth Street Dental Clinic in San Rafael, I realized how unprofessional the doctor is and the assistants are as well.

I went to Norman Elloway because his office takes Medi- cal, however I would much rather pay out of pocket for a different dentist. The office is dirty and dark and the chair that I was examined in did not look clean. The ladies working there were very nice and were dressed in proper PPE. When Dr. Elloway walked into the examination room he was not wearing a mask!!! I was very uncomfortable he then came very close to me and put his mask on did not wash his hands or put gloves on and starting poking around in my mouth after just touching his clearly re used dirty mask... not to mention he did not even introduce himself when he walked in. I got a covid test a few days after my appointment because I was so nervous. Overall I would not recommend this office. The ladies who work there are very nice and I hope they are treated well. read more

So this is the exact opposite of the previous review. I find it interesting that the previous reviewer was complaining about what Medi-Cal would pay for and blaming the dentist for it. In fact Dr. Elloway is the ONLY dentist in Marin county who will even take Medi-Cal at all! And I'm sure he loses money on it, but he considers it his obligation to help the poor. So complain about the service if you like, but it's not his fault what Medi-Cal pays for. She certainly could have taken her grandmother to her own dentist and paid for it, but perhaps her ire should have been directed towards the state or even all those other dentists in town who don't want to lose money on poor patients. I went to Dr. Elloway precisely because he does take Medi-Cal patients. I have good dental insurance I feel that those of us who are fortunate to have that should patronize those providers who help the poor so they don't lose money on all their patients. My first visit was about 6 months ago for a cleaning, no big deal, then yesterday, at lunch, I split my back tooth wide open! So I called Dr. Elloway's office and got his receptionist (who was quite nice) and they agreed to stay late and fix my tooth. I got a temporary crown and will go back in a few weeks for the permanent one. Everyone was very pleasant, especially Dr. Elloway. He also does LASER surgery (first dentist in the county to get the license) if you need serious work done. I'm sorry the first reviewer had a bad experience with her grandmother and the state insurance (Medi-cal) but her other options were to pay for it herself or go out of county, where she still would have had the same experience in reimbursement and blamed that dentist. Dr. Elloway is a good dentist, a good man and didn't 'preach' to me at all. I live in Santa Rosa and I only came here because my insurance would only cover this dentist for a root canal. So they arrange an appointment for x rays and a quick exam to make sure I need a root canal. The receptionist and the assistant were nice, and I told her how my tooth was in alot of pain. So I am waiting for the dentist to come in, and this elderly man walks in, looking disoriented. One of his assistance calls for him to another room, and he walks back out. I thought he was a wondering customer. A few minutes later, the man comes back into the room, he's wearing a hawaiian shirt, and sits down next to me. Doesn't say a word to me. The assistant explains to him I do need a root canal, and that I am in alot of pain. He then looks around, and she says "The Novocaine is over there" He then turns around and grabs the needle with the novocaine, and comes right at me with it. Doesn't even explain to me what is going on. I am confused and nearly jump out of my seat. "I ask what is going on?" The assistant then explains to me that he's going to numb my mouth, and then cut into my tooth, and put pain killer on the root, then put a cap on that until they get approval from my insurance to do the root canal" I tell them "It's ok, I will just take pain killers" The dentist then says "OK' then walks away. I am still in shock about the unprofessionalism of this dentist. The assistant said she would write me a prescription for antibiotics, and that should help with the pain. When I got home I felt uneasy about this dentist and decided to check out the reviews on yelp. The reviews showed me my gut instinct were correct. So even though I would have to pay out of pocket I decided to go for a local dentist with great reviews. I couldn't be happier with my decision. read more

After seeing six dentists, I was referred to Dr. Elloway by Dr. Peterson, DDS of Petaluma Health Center. I was laid off and am on Medi-Cal, and my teeth are crumbling and rotting. Before I was laid off, I saw my longtime dentist who easily figured out the problem, but it would cost $55,000 to remedy the problem by crowning all the teeth. So in a way it was a blessing to get Denti-Cal and a double blessing that they have restored some adult services in January 2018. The cap is $1,800, but they sometimes make a waiver for exceptional cicumstances. Before January I saw SIX dentists who would do nothing for me because at the time Denti-Cal was not making laboratory crowns and no dentist would apply temporary crowns because they are so fragile and short-lived. What was the problem? I am addicted to sparkling mineral water and, unbeknownst to me, the carbon dioxide rots the teeth. All six dentists agreed with this diagnosis, but said I had to see an endodontist. So off I went to Dr. Elloway, where the hygienist cleaned what is becoming stubs of teeth when I had asked if Dr. Elloway could just take a look first. He took a 30-second look after the cleanin and told me I ground my teeth. I told him, no, and the reason the teeth were rotting. He said it was impossible for carbon dioxide in mineral water to rot teeth, and I drink a quart or more a day! I had already looked it up online and there were articles all over the place confirming this was true, and told him I even read it in a dental journal. He said, prove it: Well, Dr. Elloway, it was the Journal of Dentistry and the recommended solution if the gums and roots are intact, is to crown all the teeth. I see many Yelpers have been going here for many years; is this guy 100 years-old and senile? I told him he should do some reading and catching up with dental techniques and stormed out of there. I had to go see another dentist and got inspected today. He said the crown was close to the gums. tried twice to get it fixed with Dr. Elloway. He said It looked ok. I am not someone who has ever done a review but i feel this one is very important. 15 years ago i went to dr. Elloway. He did a root canal and left a stainless steel crown on. A month ago i went to my dentist and he replaced the crown. My whole right side of my face swelled up including my right ear, i couldnt lay on it, it hurt so bad, so i went back to my dentist and he sent me to a entodontist who immediately performed surjury on my gums as i lay there thru this horrific surjury i couldnt understand why i was going thru this until i was later told he pulled a drill bit out of my root that dr. Elloway had left there without even telling me. The doctor also said it wil take up to 6 months to completely heal. He also did one other root canal 15 yrs ago and the gums got infected and so i lost my tooth. In all its cost me close to 10,000 dollars for needless work. Please be aware of this dentist. I lost a tooth because of a root canal Dr. Elloway did. Some time later I experienced pain and swelling. I went to a dentist in Petaluma who looked at the x-ray and said that the root canal had not been done properly, and that the tooth had become reinfected. I am also having to replace a crown which Dr. Elloway put in. The other dentist showed me on the x-ray where Dr. Elloway had put a small patch UNDER the crown, which went bad, and which, this dentist said, was NOT a good thing to do. Dr. Elloway does NOT wear gloves OR a mask. So his ungloved hands are going in my mouth, and he is exhaling directly over me.When I mentioned this to the other dentist, he was horrified. I was shocked to receive a bill for $1,300 from Dr. Elloway, with the handwritten note, 'please.' I had not been informed of these charges. I had insurance coverage. He performed procedures without first informing me of the cost! In reading reviews, I notice numerous others have had similar experiences. So I am filing a complaint with the Board of Dentistry, and may file a lawsuit for malpractice as well. I was shocked to see that Dr. Elloway has recruited people from his church, his tenants and friends, to write favorable reviews in order to make him look good. I went to this dentist yesterday afternoon. After having the whole night to reflect on my experience I decided to write my first negative review. I'm the type who if I don't like the service, I will let them know privately, and I won't go back. Not this time. In this case I didn't read the reviews before going. I have been lucky enough to live to regret that decision. And I mean lucky after almost bleeding to death in that dentist chair. Ok I'm being a bit dramatic about it. If I can spare just one "dentalphobe" from this chair, I have served my purpose. But, in all seriousness, I don't know that all of these past reviewers saw the same man that I saw. The only similarities I had to any of these experiences were the negative ones. I haven't gone to the dentist for years. Probably since high school. I mean, way too long. To me the dentist is like going to the Dr. If something is wrong, I'll go. I haven't had any dental issues at all. I floss daily and brush at least 3 min a day, blah blah blah. Finally the day has come when I have dental insurance. Hallelujah! It just so happens I have a slight swelling on my gum. Not painful at all but noticeable. I would like to make sure it's nothing bad and while I'm there I might as well have a check up. I mean, who hasn't woken up one day with a slightly swollen gum? Right? This seems very minor to me. Getting an appt to see the dentist was easy. I called, got a same day appt. Perfect. The lady who took my x-rays was ok. She was all business. But if i said "ouch" she'd adjust the film so it wouldn't poke me as much. I appreciated that. Then, the Dentist came in. He never introduced himself to me by name so, I can't say for sure it was this "Elloway" character. When the receptionist answered the phone she said this was Dr. Something, Dr. Something else, And some other Dr's office. And I was never informed who was who and which one would be seeing me. Who cares as long as they know their stuff. So, this man comes over. Takes a look. I'm scared already just sitting there. I know I'm going to get my ass beat by this guy for not going to the dentist for so long. I'm ready for it. I'm expecting it and I have no excuses. He said this swelling and irritation in my gum is due to stress. Ok, I know that's what dr's say when they don't know what causes something. And they may be right. So, I have no choice but to accept it. He says I need to brush my teeth real hard. To massage the gums. I maybe totally ignorant about dentistry, but it doesn't make sense to me that I should scrub real hard on a skin irritation. Wouldn't that make it worse? Anyway, I said "ok". So he does this "measuring procedure" on my teeth. OMG that was painful. I bled so much. He gave me a mirror and told me to hold it up to my mouth so i can see. I couldn't look. My mouth looked like a damn crime scene. I was expecting that but he was so rough. I cried. I literally had tears streaming down my face and he said to me "If you don't stop that I'm gonna quit!" Wow. I couldn't believe that. But of course, I'm in no position to argue so I said "I'm sorry, I don't know what I'm doing that is making it more difficult for you but if you tell me maybe I can stop doing it." I know sometimes when you're in pain you tense up certain muscles unconsciously. Well, he didn't answer me. He just put his instruments of death back in my mouth and went on. Then when he finished this "procedure" he puts his hand in my mouth and squeezes the swollen gum real hard. I contained a scream. I know I'm a baby. But, I'm also terrified at this point. He tells me I have to squeeze the blood out of my gums as hard as I can. I have to make my gums bleed when I floss. Wow. I have heard that if your gums bleed when you floss, eventually they will not bleed anymore when they get healthy. Well, my gums don't bleed when I floss. I think I'm pretty thorough with the floss. I mean really. So, I flossed twice since then and there's no blood. I think I'll be seeking a second opinion before forcing my gums to bleed. I felt kind of abused when I left from there. I wondered if I was discriminated against because I have CMSP insurance or my skin is brown or because I hadn't been to the dentist in such a long time that he was gonna show me! Either way, I hope I was discriminated against because I wouldn't wish this kind of treatment on anyone else. Ever. I have to say that perhaps Dr. Elloway is accepting CMSP insurance, not to service the community but because he needs patients. There's a huge difference. I have been to and worked for Dr's who accept county insurance because they DON'T discriminate. To them there's no difference between poor/rich. I would also like to think that when I go to the dentist, the staff & the dentist alike, will be more supportive of me doing the right thing at this point, now that I have the means. From now on I will check the box next to "Extremely" instead of "moderately" on the question about my level of nervousness read more

There are two different Dr Elloway so you'd better make sure you don't get the wrong one. He stabbed me and my son like we were pigs, he was rude and hurt us both. I am a patient here currently because I can't go anywhere else. This is the only dentist I've found in Marin that takes medi-cal (denti-cal). Well, the community clinic takes medi-cal as well, but the average wait time for a dental appointment is 6 weeks there. I have severe pain around my molars and couldn't wait that long. I have not been to a dentist for a very long time because I didn't have health insurance. I believe that the pain around my molars is from cavities. I apologize if this sounds gross, but I can see the decay. There is black staining in the crevices of my molars. As tooth decay gets larger, the symptoms will include: -Toothache -Tooth sensitivity -Mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold -Visible holes or pits in your teeth -Pain when you bite down (I have ALL of those symptoms) I've been here 3 times already and they haven't done anything to fix my teeth. I made appointment after appointment and they rush me in and out without doing any work. On my second appointment, the employee taking my x-rays was incompetent, to say the least. She was unsure how to take my x-rays and when she was struggling with them, her co-worker said that the mistakes were okay because they will just retake my x-rays the next time I come in. I made that appointment specifically asking to have my cavities filled, to get my teeth cleaned, and to receive advice about dental sealants. But when I came in, Dr. Elloway spoke with me for about 1 or 2 minutes and told the hygienist to clean my teeth and that the cavities would be filled next time. After Dr. Elloway left, the hygienist simply told me she doesn't have time to clean my teeth and that I would have to make another appointment, then she left for lunch. I came in again today to have the cavities taken care of, but Dr. Elloway said that I didn't have any. They didn't redo my x-rays, they didn't clean my teeth, nothing. If I didn't have cavities, why did he ask me to come in again at all? On Thursday, Dr. Elloway said I have cavities, and today (only 4 days later) he's saying I don't have cavities. They were also late 20-30 minutes for every appointment I've had so far, yet they charge $50 if you miss your appointment. And they've spent about 5-10 minutes max looking at my teeth and "working" each time I've come in. I was still stuck there for 1 hour waiting to see someone though. read more

Update: Reported this crook to CMSP (Blue Cross). When contacted by their investigator, he had no choice but to admit he'd (fraudulently) billed them for a permanent, cast metal partial, instead of the cheap, plastic, temporary "flipper" he'd given me. Significant cost difference! Also admitted to having (fraudulently) submitted the claim (and accepted payment) two months PRIOR to my even having my 2 teeth pulled!! Did my heart good when they called me with the results of their investigation.....and I learned that he had to refund every last dime of what CMSP had paid him. Yay! (Goes to show that cheaters never prosper!) After all that, he denied the part about berating me for being on "Medi-Cal/low income". Denied I'd been forced to leave his office, still in pain, because he'd refused to make the necessary adjustments. This was my first and last visit in Norman elloways office. And if you don't read the whole review. Let me just say. He put the numbing solution in my arteries. Leading to my face totally swollen and bruised. And not being able to breastfeed my baby. Enough said. Don't go.... here's the story : I had 2 cavities that needed filling. Norman elloway never introduced himself. And started by sticking his NON-GLOVED hands in my mouth. I then asked who he was. That followed by his phone which was in his shirt pocket then started vibrating and ringing VERY loudly right on my head! He didn't bother appologizing. He took out his phone procured to answer the text. And then stick his still NON-GLOVED hands back in my mouth. This is discusting. And he should have his license taken away right then. This is not the worst part. After putting the numbing solution in my gums he started drilling... it didn't work. It hurt. So he put more numbing stuff in. Total of 3 shots! I asked him is my face swelling up? The assistant nicely was going to respond "well uh" but was soon cut off by Norman "no no no you arent swollen.". After the procedure I looked in the mirror. My whole left side was totally swollen! I didn't realize at the time this was not normal so when I got home I looked into it more. Then called the dentist immediately. They told me he accidentally put the numbing solution in my artery! I told them I was breastfeeding and if I should not feed my baby. As the stuff would probably be in my milk. "Oh it should be okay you can feed your baby later" they responded. I told them I need to feed him now. Should I not give him breastmilk? "Well it should be OK to feed him now.". Thankfully I had bottles pumped because I'm sure they had no clue or interest in checking if it was really okay. My face now 2 days later is still extremely SWOLLEN and BRUISED. I never once got an apology. I never got a return call to check of I was doing better. I never got anything from them. They clearly did not care how bad they screwed me up. Save yourself the money. Update: 1/20/16 -- Due to bleeding gums that began two weeks ago and becoming progressing worse, I called Dr. Elloway's office late Tuesday and was fitted in the following day. I arrived and was warmly greeted by Lana who runs the front office. After waiting a few mins., I was escorted to one of the dental chairs by Macy (dental assistant?), who was friendly and professional. Soon thereafter, Dr. Elloway arrived, slipped on gloves, and gently examined the area of concern. Dr. Elloway asked Macy to hand me a mirror and explained that the crowding of two teeth made it challenging to floss, which has led to accumulation of bacteria and inflammation of the gums -- hence, the bleeding. Dr. Elloway demonstrated how he wanted me to floss below the gum line and reassured me not to be deterred by the bleeding. He also instructed me to brush harder in that area. Dr. Elloway sat with me for a while and patiently answered a few more questions. After two days of following Dr. Elloway's advice, my gums already feel much better and the bleeding has diminished considerably. The day after my appointment, I received an email notification that my account had been updated, I logged onto Dr. Elloway's web site and learned that there was no charge for the visit. I actually called the office and Lana confirmed it. Dr. Elloway saved me an expensive trip to a periodontist. Much gratitude for his care, advice, and generosity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- May 29, 2015: I just had my second appointment for cleaning at Dr. Elloway's office; the first was a year ago. Betty, the hygienist performed the cleaning both times and was excellent. She is congenial and explained what she was doing throughout the procedure. The appointment process via the office's web site went smoothly. The office is clean, the staff are all friendly, courteous, and professional. My previous dentist pointed out that I had numerous gum pockets that needed to be treated. At my first appointment, Dr. Elloway examined my gums and reassured me that everything was fine. This year, he examined me after the cleaning was done, informed me that the four x-rays taken today did not indicate any cavities, and no other concerns were noted. Norman Elloway is an excellent dentist. He strives to please each and every one of his customers. He continues to further his education with the modern technology that comes out today. I have been going to his dentistry since i was a little kid. i have never had a bad experience at his office and his staff is very friendly and helpful.I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out last year several dentists would have told me i need to have surgery to take them out. Dr. Elloway being the professional dentist that he is was able to take my teeth out with no surgery and just a little bit of numbing. It was done within a half an hour and I was very happy after the fact. The wounds healed very quickly and did not cause any pain. I recommend everyone i know to go there because he does such excellent work! read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS DENTIST!!!! We recently changed insurance and needed to find a new dentist. I confirmed with Dr. Elloway's office that they accept our insurance. I went a day ahead of time to meet the staff and look at the office. I should have known by the peeling paint on the door and generally "dingy" appearance of the office to beware but the staff seemed generally friendly and assured me that they practice pediatric dentistry on a regular basis. Since my 7-year old was nervous about switching to a new doctor and generally anxious about a dental visit, I purposely went the day before to meet the Dental Hygienist and confirmed several times that the Dr. Elloway himself would perform the exam. When we showed up for our appointment on Friday afternoon no one was in the office. There was one Dental Hygienist waiting for us... not the person we met the day before. She explained that it was the "end of the day", the other hygienist asked if she would do the cleaning so she could go home for the weekend. The dentist - who I was assured more than once would be there - "was in a rush to get out of the office to spend the weekend in ...I believe - Calistoga"! While the hygienist on duty did her best to make good of a bad situation, I have never experienced such an unprofessional office. Upon further inspection of the carpeted exam rooms and dusty boxes, etc. laying around the floors, I was nervous about the general cleanliness. When we left, I asked that Dr. Elloway call me directly when he returned from his 'pleasure over practice' weekend. The next week, the dentist called and left a message - he was very out of breath and left an odd message...that it really wasn't necessary for him to see my daughter but if it would make me feel better, we could still come in for another appointment. REALLY?! To top it off, I got a bill for our service because there was some confusion with the insurance company. When I called to follow up on billing - I was told that "you are just talking now, there is nothing we can do unless you call your insurer. You are responsible." I am happy to pay the bill for services rendered, but I could have gone to our regular pediatric dentist, where the actual dentist performs an exam, and paid less out-of-pocket.
