Be sure to like up well before they release at 12:30pm. It's nice and air conditioned inside and very roomy. The food is trash, but it's free and you don't exactly come where for fine dining haha. The park itself is cool. It's good for outdoor parties and events. I remember coming here as a kid and picking up a $5 bill (which was a lot for a kid in the 90's) that a lady dropped and got hella ice cream from the ice cream man haha.

The lawn is spacious, giving room for the little ones to run and play. There's a play structure they can play on too. A sidewalk skirts the perimeter of the lawn, making it a bit more accessible for folks with wheelchairs, canes, or walkers. Speaking or wheelchairs, I did see one round table that has room for a wheelchair. The restrooms, while not the cleanest in San Diego, were far from the dirtiest. It would have been nice to have toilet paper in the stall. Fortunately, it was not needed as I know this happens a lot in San Diego parks and I plan accordingly. There were dog walkers, and Frisbee tossers. I didn't see any kite flying though there is space for it. Over all a nice park to bring the family.

They have bingo games on Monday (which I used to attend with my mother), movie day, and bridge games. Plus, they have other fun things like fund-raising raffles and ice cream socials. I've had situations where a driver who relies on MAPQUEST printouts for navigation was unable to find the correct address for drop off and LEFT THE PATIENT at the wrong address. More recently, there is a driver who rushes elderly patients. He honks his horn multiple times and doesn't wait more than 2 minutes before leaving the patient. I've had a patient forget to close their house door and even risked falling on cement to chase after the van. When I reported this to the staff at horizons, nothing was done and no attempts for follow-up was made. I've joined the OB Historical…read moreSociety, helped form OB Crime Watch and CSI OB (Clean Streets Initiative) and now I've joined the Woman's Club. You always think of little old ladies when you hear Woman's Club, at least I do, and actually, that is what this club used to be like many years ago. Now, it's filled with woman of all ages. Most just realize how cool it is to live in our little beach community and it's another way of communing with others and helping your hood out at the same time. The club has been in OB for almost 80 years, but has struggled as of late, due to lack of membership. But they have a new young VP, Mel, who has fired things up and there have been a lot of new members just in the last few weeks. The place is rented out for church groups, yoga, wedding receptions, parties...at very reasonable prices. Think about them the next time you need a place for your function. Really reasonable rental prices. What most don't know is, they have this awesome community garden that surrounds the place and anyone can pay $50 for the year and grow their own veggies in their own little plot! For $35 a yr, you can share one! With the whole farm to table movement, it's very au courant!! They meet twice a month, first and third Mondays and always have a lot of fun things planned. They just had their first annual fundraiser and lots of gifts were donated by local merchants. There was a good turn out and many won lots of cool prizes in their raffle and auction. Bigger and better next year! They will be helping out at the Halloween Carnival on Oct 26 at the Rec Center on Santa Monica Ave with cupcakes, they will be at all the cool little craft fairs on the Veterans' Plaza lawn at the end of Newport on Oct 19, and on Dec 7, 14, and the 21, we have our Thanksgiving Pot Luck on Nov 4, and we will be in the OB Christmas Parade which is always a wonderful family night. All this for only $25 a year! LIfetime memberships are $1000. Here is some cool history about the WC....The Ocean Beach Woman's Club has been a "Hub of Activity" in OB since 1934. We are one of the oldest civic groups in San Diego. Senior Community Centers occupies a full city…read moreblock in between 9th/10th/broadway/C St. I believe that is occupied entirely by older welfare/fixed income recipients- even though it has a totally bitching location, the residents I view every day walking up and down broadway do not look like the wealthy seniors who've been moving into condos downtown. I've never been inside, but it seems to me like the center city is the perfect place for seniors to live, what with the higher population density and greater access to public transport, retail, etc. etc. I think it's a token of our shortcoming as a culture that seniors themselves often spurn urban environments, ending up stashed in rural/suburban wastelands where they can't do anything or go anywhere without help. They ought to take some of the many unsold condos downtown and put fixed income seniors in there. That would be sweet.
