Lady was rude. Looking at me like I didn't belong there or didn't want to service me. Should've took that as a sign to leave. Other lady rung me up and overcharged me because the rude lady gave me a price. Asked for itemized receipt and it's lower than what I was charged. I just left because I got a flight to catch. My parking spot was near this bakery and I didn't feel like going to a typical fast food place. It was difficult to find parking as I left my spot before looking for a place for a drink. The bakery stuck out for me and of course I found some baked foods I wanted. The style of food and decor is Portuguese. The lady working there was so nice to translate things and she thought I was local. When I was thinking if I had enough small bills, she said if I didn't have enough, I could pay her next time . Well, I wouldn't purposely have taken freebies like that. It also shows you how proud she is of her bakery and that she is doing reasonably well being a bakery staple of the neighborhood and working hard for me to be able to go on a Fri night around 7 PM. read more

I usually get my Portuguese bread here, the best bread in New Jesery. Although, Teixeira's Bakery is the most popular but, this hole in the wall puts them to shame. The service is quick and awesome. The Portuguese cappuccino is to die for, they also have sandwiches that are amazing and delicious. The bakery is always full of customers from the great food and baked goods. If you're ever near Newark Airport, do yourself a favor and pick up some fresh bread, coffee, cappuccino, go wild everything is great. They're opened early, I believe 5am or even earlier. I'm very passionate about this place because the quality of their product never changes, I've been going to this place since 2003. We went there an hour before closing. The staff are very nice and easy going. The pastries are very reasonably priced. The tres leche was a bit dry on the top, and could do without the caramel layer. The chocolate cake was actually in pretty bad shape. Hardly edible, we had to throw that one out. Took my daughters to Elizabeth, NJ to get some pizza and Italian ice. When the Italian ice place was closed, I jumped on Yelp and scrambled to find a place for dessert. North Avenue Bakery made me feel like an NFL quarterback that called the correct audible. The woman working in the bakery was extremely helpful and proud of their products. She recommended the tres leches cake and my daughters selected sugar cookies and meringues. This is the best type of bakery because it has a wide range of single serving selections. I've been coming to this bakery since they opened, which was at least 15 years ago. I was still a kid when they opened after the previous bakery (which was not Portuguese) closed. As a Portuguese person, you can say I've had quite a few Pastéis de Nata in my 29 years of living. I've had plenty both in the US and in Portugal. The Pastéis here are one of the best you'll find in NJ, maybe even the east coast. The buttery flaky crust with the amazing custard filling will surely have you wanting more. Others may know these as egg tarts which are also popular in places that were former Portuguese colonies. This bakery has way more to offer than just the natas. There's plenty of other tasty cakes that you'll find. They also do custom cakes for any kind of occasion. I especially love getting a custom yellow cake with ovos moles. If you're in the area, definitely give this bakery a try!!! read more

I tried two of the dessert type of breads there ... one was carrot cake which was delicious and the other I can't remember the name but it tasted like corn bread :) I ordered serradura ... which is really just Like a heavy whipping cream with crumbled cookies .. Nata for nothing am I currently obsessed with Portuguese Egg Tarts. Yeah, it's true. I am hooked on Pasteis de Natas. Furthermore, I only recently discovered these rich, custardy, flaky-crusted treats, having been sorely underwhelmed by the I *think* Hong Kong-style Egg Tarts I'd tried at Chinese Bakeries. Thus am hell bent on making up for a lot of lost years. So much so that I recently planned a Jersey day trip with the primary intent of indulging my fixation: At any rate, though am clearly no authority, me likey! Hubby pointed out how heavy these things feel in your hand and he wasn't wrong. They are jam-packed with rich, creamy, not-too-sweet, or overtly eggy custard. Much more so than at Teixeira, my only Jersey-located point of comparison. If the custard is your favorite part of a Pastel de Nata, you will love these. But for me, Teixera edges this spot out just that little bit with their more proportional custard to crust ratio. This is still plenty delicious, though. When we were here, at around 12:30 or so on a Sunday, the bakeshop was bustling, but there was nowhere near the line, not to mention stupefyingly slow and inefficient service that we encountered at Texeira's a month or two earlier on the same day and at around the same time. I very much appreciated not having to suffer through an endless half-hour wait to get my Egg Tart fix this time around. In hindsight, I wish we'd grabbed some Empanadas and Chicken Croquettes to try too. Not to mention a Caramel Tart. Something to look forward to for next time.:) read more

This is the best kept secret in Elizabeth but I'm happy to share so that everyone could give this cozy place a try. I love coming here for breakfast and enjoy bringing these breads filled with cheese to every family event. They're always amazing and my family never stops talking about them. I have gone to other bakery's that sell these breads but when you open them they're filled with air. These are completely filled with cheese and they're absolutely delicious. They have other pastries as well that are held up to the same standards. Definitely give them a try but make sure you find parking because the cops constantly give tickets to those who double park in front. The place is really small so you can't really dine in without bumping in to those who are ordering. read more

I really like this place that I found a couple of months ago and I have been going back because it's authentic desserts and coffee. It's a small place but the desserts and endless So I enjoy buying different variety and sit in there sometimes to drink some coffee which is brewed when requested. I go there a lot for the tres Leche because it's just so delicious I'm here to find any other dessert place that can beat this. That's usually just one person working and the desserts are mostly already made for pick up. They do have a few sandwich options as well which looks good but I have not tried them. We bought tres Leche chocolate cake and cookies and cream they were all really good. The coffee is also very good because you can ask the lady to make it how you want it. There's street parking watch out for the signs so you don't get a ticket. If you're only picking up you canAlso pull up in their driveway and put your hazards on. It's a nice place to sit outside and enjoy a glass of coffee and watch cars. I would recommend this place to anyone. read more

This was my first visit to a Portuguese bakery, and I regret that it took until this stage of life to experience one. The North Avenue Bakery sits on its namesake street in Elizabeth, New Jersey, surrounded by other ethnically interesting shops and restaurants that were not yet open when I needed strong coffee and a nosh to help me on the drive back to the office. It is a small shop, but there was a steady flow of customers requesting the produce of the gifted baker's hands. Most discussions were not in English, but it was easy enough to understand the Spanish, Italian and Portuguese I heard, especially with fingers pointing. I went for a fresh buttered Portuguese Roll from a bin behind the counter, an Egg Custard Mini, and a large Java. This was not a big sampling, but it was enough to know that these folks knew what they were doing. I have spent many years visiting the Italian bakeries of Trenton, NJ, and this place had the same vibe and degree of excellence. The roll was still warm when I reached for it in the bag. The crust was firm and the meat of the roll airy and pliant. The mild flavors of the flour and yeast danced wonderfully on my tongue, and the sweet butter was like icing framing a perfect cake. I immediately wished I had purchased a dozen for later consumption. The coffee was strong, but not bitter. A good complement to the roll. The Egg Custard had to wait until I made the office and could spread out a little at my desk. The first bite was enough to make a grown man cry. It was cool and creamy, mildly sweet and oh so smooth...It clung to my tongue, teeth and gums like a gentle blanket. Only the coffee could wash it off. It was truly amazing and way beyond satisfying. It was a gift from a DaVinci of the baking ovens. One of those foodie moments that make you kvell and thank the divine for this moment of rapture... There are a few tables sitting outside North Avenue Bakery. On a nicer day, that would be a great place to kick back and nibble on a tray of these awesome treasures. read more

Here's the scenario. Last week, Xmas Eve to be exact, we drove my wife's parents from Philly to Newark Airport. We got here early for their flight and we wanted to find a place nearby to have coffee or tea. I whipped out the Yelp app, and found this bakery was a few blocks from us. Well, upon getting here, I realized that this place wouldn't be our choice. The few tables they had were full. So we'd have to go elsewhere. North avenue bakery is located on busy North avenue, about three blocks off of Rt. 1 and 9. The portuguese bakery is small, but the rolls and pastries are always fresh. It's very busy in the early morning hours. The coffee is great. I usually opt for the coffee with warm (steamed) milk. The Portuguese rolls are great, as well as the ham and cheese roll. Since it's busy, everything is always fresh. The bakery is open for almost 24 hrs......they close for a few hours in the early morning. They have some outdoor seating and a few seats inside. If your looking for a cooked breakfast or lunch, the deli next door to the bakery( same owner) is a good option. I usually grab a bacon and egg on a nice, fresh Portuguese roll. read more

The guava cheese pastry is really good. It is a must. Actually I recommend trying everything. I had three different pastries and all were good. The cappuccino is also very good. If it is a nice day out, sit outside and enjoy the neighborhood. I rate this place 5 because the pastries are quite good and fresh and the service was great. I was really excited about the egg tarts but they were mediocre. The inside is supposed to be eggy and these were more like custard you find inside a donut. Not my preference. The crust was flaky and delicious. A bit disappointed. Customer service was lacking in the bakery, but the people next door at the sandwich shop were nice. Next door, which is the same company, has a griddle and makes the sandwiches. The bacon egg and cheese was pretty delicious but the bagels are not NY quality at all. They taste like a grocery store bagel which was disappointing. The value was good, two bagel sandwiches and 2 bottle waters for around $11. Remember, cash only at both places! read more

I have yet to add some pics but I will soon! I was visiting some family over the weekend and was so pleased with this family run bakery. It has a neighborhood feel to to it, a local bakery that specializes in Portuguese and American pastries. The Pastel de Nata was so yummy. I began eating my nata after walking a block and was already on the NJ transit bus when I felt like jumping out to get another one. What a shame! It's on my list of a must return! read more
