Just got off my plane and this was my first time in New Jersey, so I decided to try this bakery: The bacon egg and cheese ($5.99) was honestly really good. It came on a mollete roll that was crispy on the outside, and everything worked well together. Definitely my favorite thing I got. The pastel de nata was also solid -- nice light, crispy crust with a smooth, creamy filling. The Brazilian cheese bread (3 for $1) wasn't great though. It was chewy but it didn't taste fresh, so it wasn't crispy and ended up being kind of dense. Same with the beef empanada ($2.99) -- I'd probably skip it. The filling was dry, crumbly, and didn't have much flavor, just plain ground beef. Overall, I won't be back in New Jersey anytime soon, but coming from California it felt really cheap for a local spot. If I do come back, I'd probably try a different place. read more

Came in on a thursday morning and got lucky with parking as well as being there at a non-peak time. Lots of seating and space inside but kinda cramped up together. There are also a lot of freshly baked goods and sweets to choose from. I love that they have a menu list for sandwiches and soups which made ordering easy. I had their ham and cheese panini and it was so delicious despite being so simple. Their soup of the day is not to be overlooked! During our visit they had chickpea and veggie which was so hearty and satisfying! Thats what fresh homemade food tastes like! Staff was very patient as well with my questions as i was not familiar with their items aside from the egg tarts. I really wish they put names up or descriptions on their items for sale though. Anyway, we also got their Galao (Portuguese coffee-espresso and milk) which was satisfying and loved their Molete aka Portuguese bread. We were craving food that tasted homemade and we came across this place. It was Saturday morning and this place was poppin! We quickly secured a table and then got in line to order. The cashier was very friendly as she took my order. I ordered one pastel de nata, one empanada de pollo, and a cranberry juicy. My friends' orders consisted of another chicken empanada and a chicken soup. Everything I ordered was delicious! The pastel de nata was flakey and custardy - super yummy. My empanada was flavorful, crispy, and the chicken filling was seasoned well.. The inside was clean and there was a worker going around cleaning the tables as they opened up. It was about 5:30 am and I wanted to go out and get some breakfast with my girlfriend and I happened to find this place on Yelp and I am glad I did too. It's a very nice bakery on the corner in a very busy area of Newark close to the airport. The place was packed at 6 am so that speaks volumes in regards to their products and service. The service was friendly and fast and everything we had was good. It was lively and well lite bakery. They have a multitude of products here too. Including cheeses and drinks in the cooler. I was super excited to try their fresh Neta Belem's since I'd never had one. Oh my were they good! Was waiting to meet up with friends at EWR Penn station. Decided to take a stroll through little portugal. Came across this bustling portuguese bakery. Large cafe space. My friend and I were in the area for an authentic Portuguese dinner and dessert. I found Teixeira's on Yelp and knew immediately where dessert would be. We walked in to the flagship Teixeira's of the few they have in the area. It's large, modern, and a nice place to sit and relax. The ladies working behind the counter were all friendly and patient with a couple of guys that didn't know what we wanted to add to the obvious pasteis de nata that we would be having. We got a pastel de nata each, split a slice of dulce de leche roll, and added a chocolate covered Napoleon looking dessert. A double shot of espresso each and we were in business. The chocolate Napoleon dessert was better than most Napoleon's I've had, texturally a bit easier to eat. Dulce de leche roll was also quite good, softer than expected it also had a bit of sponginess to it in a good way. The star of the show was the pastel de nata. Crisp and buttery on the outside and decadent egg custard on the inside. Kind of dessert that makes you fantasize about living in the neighborhood and being the kind of guy that rewards himself with a daily pastel de nata and espresso. What a gem of a bakery! This Portuguese bakery serves all sorts of pastries, lunch item, coffee drinks, and fresh bread. Service is nice, but sometimes you will get services by employees who mainly speak Portuguese (but just point to the pastries you want and try pronouncing from the menu, so no problem). They have a nice dining area where we saw enough neighborhood people getting coffee and pastries in the morning. Aside from this, their prices are amazing wonderful! For a large loaf of multigrain bread it was $4; Portuguese egg tarts are about $1.75 each, but if you get 1/2 dozen it'll be $1.66 each. You can get steamed milk coffee for slightly over $2, and for a pork sandwich $6. Everything tasted wonderful! We will definitely be visiting this bakery every time we are passing by Newark! read more

Well, my whole definition of egg tarts was transformed after trying these Teixeira's bakery pastel de nata ... Portuguese egg tarts. The pie was ... the pour crust was sooooo good ... as if biting into multi-layered croissant. The texture was so pleasant that I couldn't stop at one tart. I saw the great reviews on the pastelitos de nata and stopped by during my trip. Parking is difficult to find. I parked a few blocks away. The bakery is on a corner. It's big and has many different options for pastries and drinks. It smells like bread once you're inside. It was busy on the night that I went. They have a number system. You wait in line, order, pay, and then go sit down until they call your receipt number to pick up your order. The cashier recommended the cheese croissant and the pastelitos de nata. I ordered one of each. The wait was not bad. It took about 10 minutes to receive my order. The pastelito de nata was great. It was crispy and flaky. The cheese croissant was tasty as well. The cheese was nice and melted. I would stop by again once I'm back in the area. Definitely order a pastelito the nata if you stop by. read more

My parents have been going here since they first moved to The Ironbound. You could walk into ANY of their locations and feel the love and comfort in the air the moment you step in. I haven't been to the Ferry St. location in a while but growing up? Mamá and I would walk all over Ferry and we would always stop by there to share a nice bowl of soup together. I remember hearing the chatter full up the whole place, hearing the espresso machines going and the ladies steaming the milk for the galão (similar to latte, it's just the ratio that's different 1 part espresso to 3 parts foamed milk). It felt like we were at home whenever we were there. There was a beautiful system in place the last time I was there. Theres a clear line to guide you to the counter to order, if you have any question about something or are curious about what something is? Ask!! The ladies are lovely and they give such helpful suggestions. You move along the path and you reach the cashiers counter! This is a staple in thr Ironbound section of Newark. One of the first Portuguese bakeries to open in this area, a stop in the Ironbound isn't complete with getting a pastel de Nata (custard cup) and some type of coffee...I usually opt for an espresso or latte! Aside from the pastel de natas there are tons of other sweets and cakes they offer. I see people one in and typically order about a dozen or so custard cups to go because they are so popular. They also serve small sandwiches and soups. My mother usually orders the caldo Verde which is a Portuguese soup served with kale and optional chouriço (smoked sausage). I built a sandwich and had chicken salad on a French croissant with onion, tomato, and mustard. It was packed full, fresh, and soo delicious. The pastries are also some of the best in the neighborhood. Very satisfying. I tried some coffee, too, and while the espresso was a nice pick me up, the cappucino is a special treat if you want a sweeter drink. One of my favorite morning haunts in New York City area - although technically it's in New Jersey, and past the lifeless Jersey City (at least in the mornings), where Ironbound by Harrison, NJ is bustling as people are picking up pastries, getting coffee or fresh-squeezed orange juice. The things to get here are the Portuguese and Brazilian offerings - do skip the bland, sugary macarons, and whatever passes as cake of any kind (carrot cake, pound cake, etc) and go instead for the typical Latin or Iberian breakfast offerings of empanadas, shrimp rissoles, chicken coxinhas, all of them which are amazing. And of course, the Portuguese standard pasteis de nata (egg custard tarts) as well for your sweet tooth - and with great coffee coupled with fresh-squeezed orange juice, this would be a tasty and affordable breakfast that is hard to beat. If you're looking for some pasteis de nata, Teixeira's has got you covered! I've been here plenty of times as it was usually the main reason for stopping at Newark penn station. It's about a ten minute walk into the heart of little Portugal and I usually find a line upon entering. However, service is quick and it usually only takes a few minutes before someone takes your order (in Portuguese, Spanish or English). My order always includes a fat box of pasteis de nata and I've also picked up some empanadas, coffee and other baked goods (you really can't go wrong). The pasteis de nata have a delicate flaky crust and a delicious egg custard filing with just a hint of spice. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and pick up a box of these baddies! Great stop in the Irondbound section of newark for some coffee, pastries and bread. The ladies here were so nice and helpful. I seen all the pics on Yelp of the custard cups and omg they didn't disappoint. They were the best custard cups i ever had. Not too sweet the custard was creamy and the cup was crust and flaky. They were addicting and I couldn't stop eating them. Not to mention i was full going there. I got a dozen ate half and gave the rest to my family. Don't hesitate to get them custard cups. And wash it down with a perfectly made cappuccino. No sugar. There was also fresh baked bread they served behind the counter. The bread looked delicious. The bakery space is very spacious. Reminds me of a cafeteria set up with plenty of seats and tables. There are plenty of Portuguese pastries and delights. It's good to ask the staff what the names are and what's in each pastry. There aren't many signs or descriptions near the food items so if you have allergies or dislikes just ask. We didn't eat the sandwiches or the soups but they did look hearty! The cappuccino was nice, sweet and strong. We didn't eat all the pastries yet, we saved some for later. I wish I had a picture to share but it was inhaled by these ungrateful passengers of mine. I got the egg tarts. I was only able to get one bite out of the dozen that I bought. THAT I BOUGHT!
