This cozy little bookstore is right on E 2nd in The Dalles and is a throwback to the friendly, neighborhood shops of yesteryear. The bookcases date back to when the shop opened, adding to the charm and warmth. Books of all categories (fiction, mystery, cookbooks map, gardening, thrillers, travel, brewing, baking, sci-fi, classics, children's) with new releases and even some out of print items represented. So fun to peruse through the various titles as time disappears and I get lost in the magic of printed words and stories. In addition to the varied book collection, the shop has some beautiful puzzles, gorgeous journals, pens, unique stationary, lovely cards, gifts and some toys for children. The staff is passionate about books and it's evident. The gentleman working there the day that I stopped in was so friendly and helpful, offering suggestions on books after I told him my preferences for a summer read on a lazy day. Maps are key to finding anything, sadly no used board games. The kids section is great for how to draw books, love used books stocked next to new. The catalogue computers (just like a library) were helpful - told you both what section, shelf to find your both, and number of both new and used copies available which is fantastic (just make sure to write down more then section number if that exists, it still took a while to find a specific book - a obtuse and somewhat arbitrary categorization (ie a book we wanted was under mental games) Their summer reading program was amazing for $5 coupon to be used on purchase of anything.

Powell's City of Books is HUGE. The Burnside location takes up an entire city block and has SO many different sections. There are new and used books, gifts, and basically every genre and random little category you can think of. The different rooms even have their own names, and the whole place feels like a giant book maze. You could easily spend hours just wandering around. I loved browsing through everything. Even when I wasn't looking for anything specific, I kept finding things that caught my attention. The color-coded sections and maps definitely helped because otherwise I probably would have just gotten lost somewhere in the shelves and never been seen again. Definitely one of those Portland places I'd recommend even if you're not a huge book person. It's just really fun to walk around and explore, and I can totally see why Powell's is such an iconic part of Portland.

Vintage Books has been a haunt of mine for decades. Prices were always excellent, the selection surprisingly robust, and the staff friendly and helpful, if a bit timid. Happily, not much has changed in the last thirty years, and this is one of the few instances where I would say that is absolutely a good thing. In the age of Amazon, eReaders, audiobooks, and every other conceivable method of circumventing the written (and more importantly, *printed*) word, it's almost shocking that little backend bookstores like this are able to survive...but I am thankful that they have.
