Vintage Books has been a haunt of mine for decades. As a teenager three decades ago, I used to frequently buy and sell fantasy, sci-fi and RPG books, cycling through new D&D campaign material as needed. Prices were always excellent, the selection surprisingly robust, and the staff friendly and helpful, if a bit timid. Happily, not much has changed in the last thirty years, and this is one of the few instances where I would say that is absolutely a good thing. In the age of Amazon, eReaders, audiobooks, and every other conceivable method of circumventing the written (and more importantly, *printed*) word, it's almost shocking that little backend bookstores like this are able to survive...but I am thankful that they have. read more

I love this store. Mostly used books, fairly priced and in good condition. The place is a maze of aisles and half aisles filled with a delicious array of volumes on all subjects. Great mystery section, and the kids' section looks good. Literature section is big and genuinely intellectually satisfying (there are two cases of poetry!). I love the religion and philosophy sections as well. Don't forget the sidelines--cool cards, buttons, t-shirts.... I actually found a Tennyson button there! And there are two store cats, one friendly and curious, the other shy and more reclusive. Did I say it already? I LOVE THIS STORE!! read more

What a great little bookstore nestled in one of my favorite neighborhoods in Vancouver. Friendly staff greet you as you walk in and feel like you are stepping back in time into a bookstore from an old movie. The layout, the look of the store and how the aisles are laid out, a maze allowing you to wander and explore. A virtually stimulating experience that might be overshadowed by the warm smell of clean vintage paperbacks. All my life growing up in the general area, Vancouver and Portland, I really regret not going to this store more often. Now that I live 2500 miles away, I miss this store. read more

What was the first book you ever remember reading all the way through by yourself? Mine was Grover the monster at the end of the book by Golden books for children I remember being afraid that there was a monster under my bed but once I read the book poof that was gone. I left Grover in Sesame Street, and there was something really cool about holding a book just like my mom and dad did and reading all by myself. I'm a firm believer that the ability to read is a gift that we should treasure and whether it's on a tablet or phone a computer or in a book we are privileged, it would be great if the whole world was as lucky as we are. But in the few days of horrible weather that we have been without power, I have been twice blessed to know that I had candles, a warm, blanket, and a lovely place to grow up and continue reading books that did not require anything, but the basics that I had around me. This bookstore has been an icon to this town having special events and honoring local writers among many other things with you write or read or both this is a place to be. It's much more fun than the library and you don't have to worry about return fees. Plus if you have books that you're done writing you can turn them in for credit to go towards books that you want. It's a win-win situation I support the lovely local business. It is in chanting and fun. read more

I love Vintage so much. The booksellers are incredibly helpful and kind. They are my safe place, even in a global pandemic. They're a local bookstore, so of course if you're buying new books - you're not going to get Am*zon prices... but you will be able to sleep better knowing that you're shopping ethically and a supporting local businesses. They have an awesome new-book point reward system that really adds up. Plus their trade-in for store credit is amazing! In the time of COVID, you are required to wear a mask. We are 10 months in, this is not new news. If you're unable to wear a mask, they offer a wonderful curbside pickup service and low-rate shipping! So please respect these business in wearing your mask. C'mon. I couldn't recommend Vintage Books more. Go find your safe space within these stacks and stories too! read more

I love the ambiance of this store. It feels like stepping into another world. They gave a great assortment of new and used books.

I called this company to offer them the opportunity to purchase an extremely rare and collectible 1805 Holy Bible. Not only were they rude but the first time I called a lady had the nerve to hang up on me. my Bible is listed for over 20,000 dollars on a rare book site on line but I felt that a struggling business could use the help so I was going to ask for two hundred and let the business keep the rest of the profits. This is how you repay kindness. No one should shop at a place that believes this is how you do business. I am sorry for who ever has gone here and the trashy reception you have to give to even a customer over the phone. that was a 19,800 mistake read more

My first trip here, they had decided to close early for a school group who wanted to take pictures in the store, but they did give me 9 minutes to look around, so there is that. The second trip to the store, and they were closed already. The hours listed on Yelp are not accurate. To be fair, after the second failed trip I did more research, and their website has different hours posted, which I didn't do before attempting the second trip, my bad. I recommend that you do your research on store hours, or better yet, call the store to verify hours before you go. Yelp, their website, Facebook, and the front door all have discrepancies for the days/times they are open. It appears, as of the writing of this review that you might be safe if you go before 3 or 4 PM at the latest. The reasoning for the 3 star review? My current review earns 3 stars because it appears they have a good selection of some nifty items, basically the 3 stars are for the appearance of the store and the hope it inspires I would find something there that interests me enough to buy. I will update this review if I ever go back and get a better impression of the customer service and inventory. read more

One of Vancouver's only book store to sell used and new books in exchange for store credit. For a local, I think this place is useful for trading and browsing through books. I brought in 3 books, was only able to sell 1 for $2.50. I think it was fair, considering I got it for free and I've had it sitting on my shelf for quite a while now. The books they sell do seem to be a bit pricey. I don't think I'll ever buy new books here, but used books at a reduced price? Sure. Don't forget to say hi to the book cat. She lurks somewhere in the back where the mystery fiction books are. read more

All of 18 reviews, eh? Small wonder some people still call us Vantucky. Anyhow, this is probably the only place on this side of the river that has any kind of variety. They do have a small section devoted to new releases, coffee table books and whatnot but this here is yer used book HQ around here. I was looking for something to keep as a time-filler whole waiting in my van. Something I could put down, then pick it back up a month later. I didn't have much time but I was able to take a quick circuit around the store. The layout is yer typical organized quasi-maze. It's no Powell's Books but on the other hand, I didn't feel like they were lacking anything. Like I said, it was just a quick circuit. So anyhow, I found some 800-plus page biography on Ben Franklin that was written in 1939. If nothing else it can serve as a sleep aid either through reading it or hitting myself in the head with it. Their prices weren't cheap but having said that, it's been an embarrassingly long time since I paid for any book. I believe they offer a store credit for trade-ins. Might want to double check on their hours before you go. read more

Tried this place again and was unpleasantly surprised. The price on the book I wanted was almost full price when on Amazon it was almost 1/2 that. The lady at the counter didn't greet me as I came in, in fact she looked away, and I didn't feel welcome at all. If you are a neighborhood bookstore you should give people the warm reception that a neighborhood store usually delivers. I will go to Powell's next time. read more

Had my eye on this little book store for a while but it's not so little, I couldn't leave the store, and my eyes were wandering nonstop for a couple minutes because of how much amazing books and selections they had. Amazing staff, good prices, a lot of books and best of all they have little step stools to reach for books that are high up, which is a bonus. Do not sell your books here! You are better off making a drive to Powell's bookstore in Portland. Books are slightly overpriced. Came in and sold some books for store credit(around 13$ dollars). Found a book(priced 8$) so I wanted to apply my credit to the book, however they only deduct half(policy)so you end up paying the other half in cash. At Powell's you can apply the entire credit. Just to save you guys time, you are better off selling your books at Powell's (they pay a bit more as well). read more

My granddaughters live near this store and I always make sure to allow extra time to drop in for a while when I visit. The people working there are knowledgeable and clearly love books. There are all sorts of books to see and book-related items are available, too. A great place to spend an hour or more just checking out it out. And the bookstore cats are a bonus! read more

Great used bookstore. They have some new, have neat gifts (bags, cards, notebooks, socks), and in-store cats to love on. What more could you want? Sometimes a bit messy and cluttered, it adds to the mom and pop charm and ambiance. Super friendly staff, very helpful and truly love what they do. Vintage Books has a wide selection and an entertaining cat, but if you want to sell your own vintage books to them, they require trade or a monetary donation only. I've never experienced a store that asked for a monetary donation for my own valuable books! I love this book store. It has been up and running for many years, I remember going there in my early teen years and I'm now 28 years old. The store has a very welcoming feel to it, the staff is very nice and the store feels like it's your own when walking through it. The selection is great! They have everything you could want to find in a book store, from D&D books that are old and hard to find to the newest heart throb romance. Prices were good and the location is great too. Great place to go for a walk or a bike ride on nice day. The cat that lounges around is priceless. read more

In a shopping area where plenty of businesses have come and gone (RIP RadioShack), Vintage Books has benefitted from this great community. One only needs to walk into the store to see all the used books and literary treasures sitting inside. These have all come from individuals in the area who'd like to have a local book store not named Powell's or Barnes & Noble. Considering the Vancouver Mall used to have two book stores long ago, Vintage Books's staying power is a testament to the city's intangible support for local businesses. Many other reviews have noted how unorganized the entire store feels, but they seem to be forgetting the fact that there are lots of books in such a small space. There are, indeed, different labeled sections for fiction, religion, economics, and mystery... lots of mystery books here. So the problem is not necessarily that the store is disorganized or even messy, but I believe that the store is trying hard to accommodate every product they get, which has its pros and cons. I can't imagine more than two people comfortably walking down one of the crowded book aisles. In the times I've browsed through Vintage Books, you don't get a nice greeting every time you walk in. The front desk either does greet you, is busy with something to do so, or briefly glances at you as if to silently congratulate you for finding this store. But to clarify, they do help if you're looking for something in particular. I once asked for a few computer science books, and they took the time to search for it both within the store and in their online database. Speaking of which, their website is severely outdated. It's even more perplexing, seeing how its supposed developer, chrislands.com, has a much nicer, organized site. The online database also doesn't seem to match everything that's in the store. For example, I came across a few technical books within the store that weren't listed online. Overall, though, Vintage Books does seem to live up to its tag of selling rare books not sold elsewhere in the Portland-Vancouver area. I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for such items, or if you'd like to trade in books for some fairly modest store credit. read more

Would rather go here than Powell's any day. An amazing collection of rare books. Entire shelves of authors who you might be lucky to find 1 or 2 books of elsewhere. This local, independent family owned bookstore is one of my favorite places to be and to shop. (There are comfy chairs to use.) The owners and staff are pleasant and helpful. The pre-owned book selection is amazing and the new titles are carefully selected. Need a gift? There is an intriguing select of unique gifts, sox, and cards. And the gift that is always on my list - gift cards. These folks also support many local events that get reading material into the hands of children who may have never owned one. I'm a happy customer of Vintage Books and like knowing that when I shop locally much more of the revenue stays in the community read more

The best bookstore in the greater portland area, and yes that includes the "other" one downtown, a great selection but more importantly all of the people who work there are so very nice and helpful. It only took me going there a few times until I felt like I was friends with the owner and all the wonderful people who work there. Just a great atmosphere and welcoming store. They have events all the time and author reading and signings, and let us not forget the bookstore cats, while you may only catch a glimpse of Dickens if you are a super regular you will always see the new aloof kitty Emerson. This family-owned and run (for the most part) bookstore is warm, welcoming, and chock full of great finds on books new and used, journals, calendars, magazines, and so much more. There is so much more than meets the eye, and the variety keeps you browsing and wanting to return for longer and longer visits.
