Upon agreeing to the foster-to-adopt program, I returned home with my puppy thinking the North Bay Animal Service would follow through on all of their promises. How wrong I was!!!! I was told I would be called after two months and would be asked to bring my puppy in for her rabies shot and to be neutered. Heard nothing at the 2-month mark. Called at 2.5 months and asked if I should bring her in for her neutering and rabies shot and the deflections started. Finally, this phone conversation ended with the receptionist stating "an appropriate person would be giving me a call. I asked if the appropriate person was named Bella. "Yes" was the answer. Waited a week for a call. Got nothing. Called back and repeated the above conversation with the added "Bella seems incapable to return phone calls so please find an appropriate person not named Bella to return my call and answer my questions." Waited a week and got nothing. Repeat the above 4 more times in the space of two months. No return calls. No neutering. No rabies shot. No information at all. Since that time it has become clear the staff at North Bay Animal Services have little to zero communicative ability, zero customer service, zero people skills and actively encourage potential adopters to NOT use their services by not answering questions, not fulfilling their stated responsibilities toward un neutered and vaccinated dogs, not returning phone calls, not informing potential adopters the actual waiting time for neutering and shots, lying to potential adopters on the time frame for North Bay to finalize the process. It turns out that at the same time they were telling me it would be 2 months after starting the foster-to-adopt for the neutering and rabies shots, there were several people who have been waiting for over 1 year!! I ran into another adopter at the local dog park who had the exact same experience and informed me that the only way he got all of the promised services was by calling and complaining DAILY and after 1.5 years he FINALLY got his pup neutered. Another patron of the dog park had the same experience but, in his case, it only took 8 months. So, in conclusion, if you are looking to adopt a pet and if that pet does NOT need neutering, shots, or any medical care not already administered, you might do alright at North Bay. If on the other hand your desired pet requires some additional shots, neutering or ANYTHING at all DO NOT USE NORTH BAY AMIMAL SERVICES unless you enjoy being treated like dirt. There is no shortage of shelters with a helpful staff to aid potential adopters with the process. Forewarned is Forearmed. Adoption date April 21, 2023 and still waiting to hear when North Bay will do their job.

Nothing but love for these people. I adopted a kitten from there she is a cutie they helped me adopt her and get her fixed when it was time. I got to hang around and watch them work and oh my they are very busy trying to do good deeds so please be patient with them they really have there hands full.

This shelter murders animals and hides it from the public! They let somebody who was not the owner bring my 2 dogs in, claim they were the owner, requested euthanasia and they were killed the next day. My name was on their paperwork and their microchips, the staff didn't bother to check it. They didn't bother to examine my dogs and question why someone would want to put down 2 sweet dogs that love people. The person who brought them in claimed they killed chickens the day before. By law they were supposed to be held for 10 days to check for rabies. So now this turns into a public health concern. Brandner was the vet who euthanized 2 perfectly healthy and sweet dogs. How can 2 organizations who are supposed to be protecting our animals be so cold hearted and ruthless? This shelter is run by someone who should never be around animals, he does not care, he only cares about power and money. I worry daily for the well being of every animal that goes into that shelter. I have raised my concerns with the city of Petaluma and the animal advisory committee and nobody will listen. NBAS needs to be investigated! My dogs were not the only ones who were illegally killed.

Meet Dog 2. Giving the please adopt me look.

The first time I came to this facility I was about 8 or 9 years old & I adopted a cat but that was a looooooong time ago, basically when dinosaurs roamed the earth. So now, close to a half a century later I'm online looking for dogs all up & down Mendocino, Sonoma & Marin county as well as Contra Costa, San Francisco, down the peninsula all the way to Santa Clara County. All the dogs are cute but none of them have that "you must adopt me" look. And then on 08/20/2020 there he was "dog 2" with an intake date of 08/19/2020 just the day before. He had that adorable look on his face that said "you know you want to adopt me!!" So after filling out the application and calling Bella practically every day for 2 weeks I finally got to meet dog 2 whose name was updated to Rocko. I will tell you that the online application is a bit incomplete as there was one question asking how long "you" are out of the house and how long the dog would be left alone. There was nowhere to put down that the dog would not be left alone as the dog would got to work with me. So with that question and a few others I had to call Bella and explain my answers on the application since there was no place to explain or comment. So with Covid, you're not allowed into the kennel to browse, etc., hence all photos & info (as much info as they have) is online, and you can call with questions. I got to meet Rocko, outside in a gated area that had chairs, artificial grass, a table, etc. This was a nice area for dogs to roam and get use to individuals and/or families looking to adopt. After about 30 minutes or so of playing with Rock in the visiting area outside, Bella asked if I was still interested in adopting Rocko. Well duh! So with that she brought all the paperwork to me, told me the adoption fee was $90 plus an additional $20 for licensing, took my credit card to charge the $110, then brought out my receipt & paperwork as well as a bag of stuff for Rocko. In the bag was dry dog food, a can of wet dog food, various toys, dog treats, a harness with a matching leash, a collar, everything a dog going to a new home could want. Bella did tell me that Rocko was a transfer from Santa Rosa and once I started looking at the paperwork I noticed he had been in Santa Rosa from 06/20/20 until he was transferred to Petaluma on 08/19/20. Not sure why he'd been in 2 shelters for over 2 months (they don't tell you why or what the situation might be) but at just a year old this explains some of his separation issues. All in all, this was a pretty painless from start to finish. I will say that if there is an animal that you see that you're interested in adopting, fill out the application immediately and then contact them by phone so they know and you can start scheduling a time to meet your possible future pet.

I adopted a kitten , 6 mo old, from North Bay and they must have treated and coached her well! She never scratches and is so affectionate! She is 18 months old now. I am SO very grateful for Northbay

My first rescue from North Bay Animal Services!

The first time I visited North Bay Animal Services I found my dream rescue dog thanks to the team members onsite. They let me foster her for the weekend in order to ensure a stable and sustainable match. After the weekend, I brought her back to get spayed and formally adopted her! NBAS offered a leash, harness, food and crate as well. Thank you, Bella and Mark Scott for your genuine efforts and passion to save animals.

What are the accreditations that staff have? I can't seem to find ANYTHING on the California veterinary medical board webpage for any of NBAS staff

North Bay Animal Services outsources veterinary care, that's why you won't find this information.

We adopted our dog there and Gabe is one of the most caring, knowledgeable and kind professionals that I've met. His first priority is the wellbeing of the animals in their charge. He is worth his weight in gold and a wonderful source of animal behavioral knowledge. Secondly, our cat disappeared in May of 2017 and after doing everything we could to find him, we feared the worst. Months went by and we relocated from Sonoma County to the Central Coast. We were shocked to receive a call from Gabe, letting us know that our cat was found, and he was able to locate us thanks to a microchip. FOLKS, MICROCHIPS WORK! But remember to always have your information current! Because we live much farther away, the staff, and especially Alison the AMAZING Shelter Director were all very accommodating and patient about us getting to Healdsburg to retrieve him, because it fell on a Holiday weekend. In the meantime they kept communication ongoing, and because our cat was underweight, they were especially concerned for his health and did everything they could to find something palatable to help him eat. Our kitty is now home and thriving again. Healdsburg is SO fortunate to have such a beautiful afacility and such a caring staff for the local animal population!
