My family used to take our pets to Dr. Zamora (also listed here under his vet clinic, AEZR) up until I realized after losing several pets that the care was far from adequate. Pets with treatable conditions he didn't mention there were any treatments for, pets he managed to mess up while euthanizing, one he brought out post-euthanasia while she was still taking reflex breaths (when I pointed to her in horror, he just pushed the air back out), one died at home after being sent home while still totally unconscious from surgery with blood oozing from the incision (he shrugged that off when I asked)... Basically, he's fine if you want your pets to only get the veterinary care that was available back when any pet that couldn't be treated with prednisone, Clavamox or surgery was put to sleep. Though if that's the case, I'd still recommend going elsewhere so they won't suffer. read more

Sadly, I have to rescind my earlier review of this practice. It now seems that Dr. Zamora keeps very partial and selective financial records. A billing arrangement isn't a service to your client if records of prior payments are omitted. My elderly mom (who passed a few months ago) claimed several times AEZR was double billing her for our family cats and pug, and after paying the last bill out of my own pocket in 2014, there's still no record of any such payment, or any other payments for the past 4 years, which is totally untrue. The last time I paid a $100 installment in order to get a $15 glands expression for my pug, mom was really upset - claiming she'd already paid off the outstanding amount and that I should not pay them any more. When we had our second cat, Corky, put to sleep in 2013 (paid for at the time, I have the receipt still) I'd left her overnight to confirm her status as terminal and in the morning found her in deplorable condition, worse than when she was dropped off. Dripping - soaking wet, shaking and clearly miserable. Couldn't they have at least kept her dry and warm? To this day I feel I made a terrible mistake leaving her there, night before she was put down. Dr. Zamora has a cold bedside manner about euthanizing and actually whistled to himself during and after. They then tried to charge an exorbitant disposal fee and $50 PER NIGHT to keep her in their freezer while we decided to make arrangements for her burial. When I went to pick up her remains, I got back the same box I brought her in. I had to bury her little frozen body myself. Today, I brought in my pug with a tumor - waited about 30 minutes and after being admitted to the exam room, Zamora brought out his file folder with its incomplete records and said a remaining balance would need to be settled before he would treat my pet. Needless to say, he refused to acknowledge the prior payments, accused my recently deceased mother of lying and had a few choice words for her and myself. Unbelievable. Please, do yourself and your pets a favor and avoid this vet and his practice. The office staff (his family) are quite friendly and supportive but that can't make up for the horrible attitude and fraudulent/negligent billing. read more

I called at 6:30 am to leave a message and was shocked that the dr answered. He discussed my cat's issues and booked a same day visit. They took care of my cat and all of his problems that day, The recommendations were spot on. And apparently my cat got a girlfriend there (the resident hospital cat is adorable). I really felt that the staff really cares about the animals there. And everyone is very friendly. It's a family place. The 2 vets are Dr. Zamora and his daughter-in-law Dr. Zamora LOL! My family has been taking our pets here for decades and my most recent experience was fantastic. They're very fair on price and quite honest about what your options are regarding your pet's care. I find it odd that some of the reviews here went for the ad hominem approach. I can't imagine an experience further from what they've described (not to mention being genuinely curious about how they arrived at the "crack whore" conclusion -- takes one to know one, I guess?). I'm surprised Yelp has allowed that review to stand. If you're on the fence, definitely give them a try. Like preferences in the type of pet a person gets, expectations of veterinary care can be highly variable from pet owner to pet owner. If they're not for you, no big deal. If they are, you've found a nice, reasonably-priced family business that will be around for a long time, since I believe his son plans to take over, maybe along with some other siblings. I took my 60 lb mutt here after a failed attempt at completely removing a tick. The vet greeted us and then proceeded to express his unsolicited opinion of my dog's name. He very roughly dug at the tick's remnants with tweezers and some other instrument for a few long minutes, pinching at her skin and jabbing around. She started whimpering and getting panicky, so he grabbed an injection of local anesthetic and was able to finish the job after deriding her name a few more times. Since I was already there, I asked him for some advice regarding her anxiety when riding in cars on the freeway after an accident. He said to take her food away before trips. I told him she's traveled on an empty stomach before and is still fearful. She seems to have anxiety due to the accident, not motion sickness. He said maybe she just doesn't like her name. Whatever. The whole appointment cost over $100. So much for cheap. I would hate to have to deal with his unprofessional and unhelpful remarks during a more serious matter. read more

I took my Alaskan Malamute to this vet on the third of July, when no other vets had open appointments. It was obvious that my dog had an ear infection and needed medicine, since this had happened before. They kindly took us in during lunch. Upon looking in his ear, the vet told me that the only way he could treat it would be to sedate him, take a blood sample, and send medicine home. I was very unsure, but incredibly worried because he was in a lot of pain and all vets would be closed for fourth of the July, after being persuaded, he put my dog under. I suspect he was afraid of my dog because he didn't want the pinch collar off, something I only use for walking corrections. This all cost about $500, again, I was incredibly worried. When I arrived back my dog was still sedated and the vet had a friend help lift him by his pinch collar, practically dragging my 90 pound dog to the front. This scene alone was traumatic, it took him a few hours to come to. The medicine was a powder in a non labeled bottle, very odd. I instantly regretted taking him in, because it seemed as if nothing had been done. On the sixth, I took him to East Petaluma Vet, where they petted him, got on the floor to check on him and gave me a simple, recognizable, medicine to administer! They told me all that we had done was unnecessary. It couldn't be more true, especially since I never got any blood work results back, even after repeated calls. I have taken a number of my pets here and am very disappointed in the care provided. The place is not clean and the animals are handled very rough. It's very inexpensive so if you need a shot for your pet it's probably a good cheap place to go - but if your pet requires any type of care beyond a vacine, I would suggest anywhere else but here. read more

Last night when I got home from work my female cat Zelda did not meet me as she usually does. When I found her upstairs I immediately realized something was wrong. I called Dr Zamora right away and he was willing to meet me at the hospital in 10 minutes at 8:00pm in the evening! He knew right away what was wrong (an abscessed wound) by being able to smell it when we took her out of the carrier! Abscessed wounds can get very nasty quickly so I am very grateful that he is available and willing to take care of such things so quickly. I had a really good experience with Dr. Zamora. I was traveling through the area on the Sunday before the Christmas holiday when my four month old puppy ate something off the ground and got really sick, at least enough to get my wife and I very concerned. We tried the Petaluma vet hospital first but they were closed, so we called Aezr and Emilio answered the phone. He was speaking from his home, but when I politely described our situation, he offered to meet us at his facility to help our pup. The office was not the most updated that I've seen, but they had the essentials and that was plenty enough. Dr. Zamora was very kind and gentle with Obi, he brought us all into the exam room and checked him out while we answered questions. Then he helped induce vomiting with an injection, called his son in to take blood work, took and interpreted the blood work for us, and gave us some medication all while providing a kind and gentle energy throughout. The entire bill was less than $300, and we were grateful for that. We could've been really taken for a ride on a holiday Sunday like we have at some of the larger corporate vet hospitals around. I would recommend this place to any pet owner who isn't too uptight, racist, or uncomfortable with an older doctor, that wants good service at an affordable price. We've been taking out dogs to Dr. Zamora for years, and we've had a generally good experience with them. However, the other day, when we took our cat, they lost her. She ran right out a side door and we still haven't found her. They did nothing to try to help. Their attitude was indifferent, and they didn't offer to (in the future) actually help our cat for free. She has an abscess on her bum, and she needs to have it closed. Right now, she's lost with an open sore on her body. All because someone at Aezr didn't shut the door. I'd think twice about their compassion and handling before taking your pets there. read more

I brought my dog Missy (20 months, 70 lbs, female labrador) into AEZR due to concern that she may have a foxtail in her nose. It was a Saturday and I do not live in Petaluma, and he was one of the few places open according to Yelp. I explained to the vet (Dr Zamora?) that Missy had started sneezing violently just an hour earlier after playing fetch in a field that had foxtails in it (this was May - the height of foxtail season). While Missy did not sneeze in front of the vet, I explained in detail the symptoms I had witnessed. He told me that he was confident that she did not have a foxtail in her nose because "there was no blood" and "her nose was not tender to the touch." He did not look inside her nose. He looked inside her ears, took her rectal temperature, and said she had "allergies" as well as an "elevated temperature." He then prescribed amoxicillin. I questioned him over the logic for prescribing oral antibiotics for a mild fever and sneezing, but he reassured me this was the treatment. He then asked if I wanted heartworm and Lyme's disease tests, but I declined (we live in San Francisco). His prices were relatively inexpensive ($39 for appointment, $25 for antibiotics). We got back to my parents' place 10 minutes later and the sneezing resumed. Then blood started to trickle out of Missy's nose. I remained suspicious that a foxtail was stuck in her nose. I then drove to the VCA in Rohnert Park and they agreed with my suspicion. They sedated Missy and located/removed the foxtail within 10 minutes. Sneezing resolved. While the vet at AEZR was a pleasant man with competitive prices, I would not trust him to treat my animals. I feel he demonstrated complete incompetence with Missy; he did not listen to my subjective report (the sneezing started immediately after diving into a pile of weeds/foxtails) and I feel he was looking for symptoms that may take a few hours to appear (blood/tenderness). Another thing I found odd was that he asked me to put my 70 lb dog up on a high table. I've never been asked to do this by another vet (they usually bend down and care for my dog on the ground). I found this to be incredibly unsafe - a risk to both my husband (who obliged and lifted Missy up) as well as my dog who could have easily fallen. read more

My ancient Pug, already blind and deaf, suffered a severe seizure and was unable to move her legs. New to California and Petaluma, I chose the vet closest to me. By the time we arrived (and it was a Saturday afternoon late), I knew there was nothing we could do for my old girl. The doctor was so kind. He sedated her and let me hold her and talk to her until I felt comfortable enough to let her go. Then he give her the euthanizing medication as she lay happily in my arms, licking my face. Afterwards, he gently placed her on the table and said a prayer for her. I am not a Christian, but I was touched by his obvious caring. The bill was ridiculously low. Over the years I have had to euthanize a few old or sick animals. This was the best experience under these sort of circumstances that I could possibly ask for. I worship this man. I have already sent two new clients to Aezr, and they both came back raving about the gentle and affordable care their animals received. This place is not fancy or high tech, but I trust these people with my pets and thank them for their gentle spirits and customer service. read more

I have owned MANY pets, and been to many different veterinarians in sonoma county.. The first time I took my chihuahua here was when she got sick from a posinous flea medication. I called the vet around 4:50 p.m. and they told me they close at 5:00 p.m. but to come anyways and they will wait for me. I was surprised that they were so understanding and willing to keep their doors open to see my pet. I was also surprised when they billed me. All they charged me was $30 for the visit. This is almost THREE times less than what another vet had charged me for just a visit. (of course that does not include medications, etc.). Anyways, I could not beleive that this vet was so kind enough to see my dog at such late notice, and let me get away with the proper care my dog needed without going poor. The second time I went to this vet it was because my dog ate chocolate. They took care of my dog, gave her the proper meds and my dog is doing great. I feel that they were reasonable with the charge of the medications, and that had I gone somewhere else I probably would have been in and out in 10 minutes with a bill over $500. Also, to me, its not just the cost that matters when you are looking for a great vet - it's 100% the attention and care that they give your pet - at all times, no matter what the reasons are. I feel that everytime I have taken my dog to this place they had my dogs best interest at heart, and I am greatful for that! read more

Dr Emilio is a wonderful vet, very old school but attentive to your animal's needs. He's a straight talker but I love that about him. The entire family is great to deal with from the front of the house to the tech who was so very kind to my pet when he was scared and not happy. This place is the best we have 7 pets and we take them all to Dr. Zamora and staff/family are so kind and professional. We adopted a baby kitten from a friend and took her in right away to get tested before we took her home to the other cats. Dr. Zamora thought that she was so cute that after he did her exam he drew a picture of Emmy ( the kitten ) with a pencil and paper, he then gave it to me to take home...What vet does that? They have been there for us in good times and in bad and always you leave there feeling like your animal was well cared for and the prices are so good. I have been bringing my dogs and my cats to this wonderful hospital for several years now and Dr. Zamora is my favorite vet I have ever had. I am 63 years old and I've had animals my whole life. Dr. Zamora's great experience is equal to his deep compassion and love for animals and for their humans as well and his fees are reasonable. Sometimes he even allows payment plans. His son and daughter-in-law are vets too and work alongside him.Today I brought my dog Teddy (a rottie/pit mix) who has a painful mouth and although I was not able to get teddy to open his mouth, Teddy trusted wonderful DR. Zamora and who found that Teddy has an inflamed tonsil. So Teddy will be taking antibiotics and I have every confidence it will help him. I am so very grateful to have found this treasure, this healing place in Petaluma and I want to let others know about it and about Dr. Zamora! read more

Good vets, I guess. But I showed up here at 1:58 pm to buy some meds for my cat and found the doors locked. I looked down at the hours of operations and saw they are closed 12p-2pm m-f. Really?? A two hour lunch every day?! They open at 10am, work for 2 hours, go on a 2 hour lunch break, then come back and leave at 5. Stupid, stupid hours. So I thought, "Ok I'll sit in my car for a couple minutes and they'll open the door." Wrong. 25 minutes later the doors were still locked so I finally called to see what the hell was going on. They answered and said they "were on the way." That was 10 min ago and I'm still sitting in the parking lot waiting, and passing the time by writing this review. Not pleased. (Later...) The owner finally showed up and was super casual about the whole thing, as if showing up that late and making me wait was no big deal. No apology or explanation, just an "oh well, too bad for you" attitude. I guess my girlfriend still likes these people, but if it were up to me I would never come back here. There are a too many other great vets in the world who actually give a shit about their customers/patients to keep dealing with these people. read more

We recently moved to Petaluma. Before we moved I read the Local Vet reviews and knew we were going to give Aezr Pet Hospital a try once we moved. Shortly after our move our Pug became seriously ill. Our daughter was home and rushed her to Aezr. Our daughter was very distraught and the entire Staff was so kind to both her and our pug. We have had our pug under their care for 5 months. To say we ADORE and are indebted to Dr. Elmar Zamora is an understatement!! She is fabulous, calls to check on our dog's health and Well Being and is in constant contact with Specialists, doing additional research. Rex is AMAZING, Kind and Dr. Emilio Zamora is full of knowledge, insight and wisdom!! We do not know how they do everything they do, always with such compassion, understanding and patience!! We Appreciate them more than words can say and we are smitten by the entire Family. They are shining stars in Petaluma!! read more
