Caleb and North Coast Surf School made our vacation so great! We were lucky enough to meet Caleb early in our trip and he and an assistant taught our entire group how to surf. Everyone was able to get up and enjoy the waves and we went back the next day for another lesson! Caleb was excellent with our children, working with them on safety and insuring they had a great time. My wife saw how much fun the kids were having and he had her out riding the break the next day! We only had three days in Mendocino, and my 14 year old daughter said she wanted to take surfing lessons. I really didn't think this would be possible -- we are from Chicago and I thought surfing lessons would have been easier to find in Southern California. So I Yelped "surfing lessons" and North Coast Surf School came right up. I read the reviews and immediately called Caleb. He answered and we were able to set up a lesson for that afternoon! My daughter was so excited! (Caleb said that often, the cell reception isn't so great, so if you don't get through, text him and he will respond right away) I knew right away that this was going to be great. He fitted my daughter with a wetsuit, gave her a thorough safety lesson on the beach, and they were off to the water. She was a little nervous, but Caleb's enthusiasm was infectious and she stopped being nervous. The first wave came, and Caleb gave the board a little push, and she was off and made it up on the first try! She was so excited, and Caleb was too! He is a wonderful teacher -- giving just the right amount of instruction, correction and genuine positive feedback. Kids know when adults are giving empty praise, and they can also know when someone is the real deal. And Caleb is the real deal!! I wish we could have spent longer there. We came back early the next morning for a lesson, and then we had to return to the Midwest. But when we come back, you can be sure that Caleb will be one of the first people we call!! read more

My fiancé got us a surf lesson for my 35th birthday in Mendocino through Zozi. I couldn't have been happier with our instructor, Caleb. He was kind, clear with his instruction, and I felt safe in the ocean the entire time. A truly personable fellow, Caleb went the extra mile for us as we learned to surf. The pop up technique that he taught us and the safety falls made me feel confident even before I left the beach. He was able to modify the techniques he taught based on our range of ability. Even before we left the parking lot, Caleb was responsive to our requests. It was a windy day and we needed to buy caps, he not only told us where to go to buy some but he got us a half off deal on one. The caps and gloves (1 pair for my fiancé) were high quality too. I'd give ten stars if I could. I decided I wanted to go surfing last minute when we were in Mendocino-the weather was perfect and I wanted to get in the ocean. Only problem is I don't know how to surf! I found Caleb's page and had a surf lesson confirmed for the next morning within minutes. Caleb is such a joy to work with-we talked about our lives, careers and our values in between him helping me catch some great waves. With his help, I actually got up multiple times. It was so fun! Caleb's not only a great guy, he's a great teacher and coach. He also knows all the spots, and took the time to listen to what I wanted with the lesson before driving to a beautiful cove. A spiritual experience with professional, and cool surfers. As first timers I couldn't have imagined a better scenario... we got Waves, Waves and more Waves! The family loved the patience, instruction and the suits that kept us toasty at Jug Handle today. Caleb and Sarah took care of us. My son and I (he's 15/I'm in 40s) got lessons and help from Caleb. My Daughter 8 and the Mrs. got love from Sarah. Before we started, Caleb told us that my daughter was going to be the first priority that made me even more impressed with his instruction. Scenario: We met in the late afternoon. Surf was dead at first locale so 10 mins up the road we got suits, instruction, and our baptism into the Pacific. Perfect in every way. "No joke" waves according to Caleb met us in force and I only wish I was in better shape because surfing is not only a blast but what a workout. I was so wiped at the end of our lesson I couldn't stand up on the board. I would surf again tomorrow if I could. Have fun and tell Caleb I said Hello. I'm already wishing I was you.
