This beautiful, well-maintained gym is home to many talented and passionate Brazilian jiu-jitsu…read more(BJJ) practitioners and hosts a team of great coaches and mentors to continue improving your skills and techniques and also growing your passion for the sport. Although the name nor location stands out much at a glance as a gym for BJJ, it is well known among locals and visitors of their excellence and commitment to expanding the roots of the sport in this area. It's been heard near and far about their ability to bring in top practitioners for seminars and guest visits. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to come in for a couple sessions taught by Eric and his team. With multiple sessions a day, multiple days a week, it was flexible to find a time that worked for me and with people of all levels, it was a great opportunity to learn from some talented folks. They do host gi and no gi sessions so if one's more your cup of tea, consider checking their schedule to determine the best days and times to attend. With a private parking lot, it makes it also convenient to come in at any of their sessions and be able to hop in and out without worrying about finding parking or getting stuck in traffic while trying to navigate the constantly construction-ridden streets of Solana Beach. The first impression walking into Studio 540 was the immaculate training area which included the main area of mats but also the side areas, staging area, and bathroom/showers. Eric and everyone who came in were extremely welcoming and made the session a great learning environment. The training was balanced with warmups, drills, and open rounds and had a good pace to keep bodies warm and flowing. I only wished I had more time to come by more often! Overall, Studio 540 is an exceptional gym for those looking to get into the sport of BJJ as well as for those who are a bit more advanced and looking to level up your game. Their facilities are extremely clean (they expect team members to wipe and sanitize the mats after each session) and well-maintained. Their footprint in the community has quite a reach and brings in folks from afar to come train so you may have the opportunity to meet a great group of people. If you're looking for a gym to call home or simply a visitor interested in keeping up to speed and in shape, give Studio 540 a look!

It's been a minute since I've taken boxing lessons and I generally dance or do ballet barre, so I…read morewas in pretty good shape. Boy, was I wrong. This class is challenging. By the end of the course, I was drenched in a gallon of sweat. I had Andrew the owner as my instructor. We probably had altogether 1 or 2 minutes of water time. All the other minutes were burpees, jumping jacks, push-ups, and one-on-one instructions, and the remaining periods were all on the punching bag. Andrew is friendly and knowledgeable. He'll go around each person offering corrections to ensure you're doing it correctly and lessen the likelihood of injury. He also tailors the workout based on your conditioning, which is nice. The facility is nice and clean, Andrew even showed me a backroom that's like a workout room which is reserved for private lessons. I came in here once and will definitely return. Andrew promised that he'll get me into a summer bod and get rid of this dad bod; so someone will one day love me too!! This is a crazy good workout, you'll definitely feel it the next few days. But I feel the amount of strength and endurance and calorie burning in this class is insane. I'll definitely be back, 5 STARS!!!

From the owner Andrew to the instructors, you get great instruction from great people. If you just want to burn calories or if you want to improve your boxing technique/IQ, they have classes that have you covered. They also do HIIT classes if you want to change it up. This is not your cookie cutter boxing gym, it is a unique boutique boxing experience. I love Kina for technique, Andrew for a kick ass workout, Anthony for real world fighting instruction and Lenzi for an amazing calorie burn. You need to try it:)

We signed our daughter up for a trial lesson and she loved it!…read more Was worried the class might be a little too fast paced for her as she appeared to be the youngest in the group (3.5) but she kept up well enough to not be discouraged and the instructors were attentive to give her additional support whenever she appeared lost or confused. We're excited to bring her back for regular lessons. Great location, and classes take place in a very clean and open facility.

SWEET! so my daughter has had a rough time deciding what she wants to do...soccer, baseball, ballet, gymnastics...so...why not get her started in Tae Kwon do??? She agreed to do it on the condition that I do it with her....well, if you know me, i am anything but athletic. To me exercising is going dancing with my friends in Hillcrest, where i probably take in more calories than i burn. But part of being a good Mom is encouraging my children and being a good example, so I agreed to join with my baby girl. Although I feel like a bit of a fool out there...all the 5 years olds are doing better than me...I am so happy (don't tell anyone) that I am working out with Master Church. Master Church and his wife Trish are so incredibly sweet and nurturing. Not only are they like that with all the children, they are treating me...the clumsy adult with the same attention. Thank you guys...it means alot to me =) i really hope my kiddos stick with this forever...and hopefully I get the hang of it soon. oh ya ladies...and it is a really good workout!!!

I am writing this (perfect timing) after a 45 min run, with zero knee pain, and all the running…read morehighs! I found Alex in January of 2015. I had just come from a weekend away in Palm Springs, where I had planned to relax, run, and engage in as much fitness as possible. I headed out for a run on New Years Day; new shoes, new lululemon pants, new Garmin watch, and after about 20 min. my outer knee was in so much pain I had to basically walk the rest of the way home. I was devastated and confused. Not only had I run for about an hour for 2 days in a row prior, I have been an avid runner since High School. Even with icing my knee for about 3 days straight, nothing was helping and I knew I had done something more serious. My history of running - I have run a total of around 4 or 5 half marathons easily, no knee pain since 2012. Completed many 10K's and casual runs on my own at least twice a week for years. It was something that happened so out of the blue, I am just thankful that Alex entered my life when he did. He started out with the basics, which at the time seemed a little out of context. "What other workouts do you do? What has changed in your exercise in the last year". I couldn't really come up with much, other than lots of YOGA. Becoming a certified Yoga teacher and basically doing yoga everyday for the past year only seemed like it was helping my running. Of course. Alex saw this as a red flag right away. With the types of exercises that I was engaging in on a weekly basis, I was only extending ligaments and asking parts of my body (my knee) to over compensate. This then effected my IT band, more weight in my calfs, soreness, you name it. It's a vicious cycle. After about 5 sessions with Alex - he not only identified the root cause of my pain, but trained me to run in a different pattern so I could alleviate the pain, without having to give up what I love. We took everything in phases, added in weights, combined static movements with real time workouts and in no time, I was back. To this day pain or not, I have shifted the way I run bc he has taught to me always look ahead. Alex sees prevention of injury like no one else I have ever met. I am not a very optimistic person when it comes to my body, bc I am very in tune with how it wants operate, or not operate for that matter. I was completely in awe when I made it through my first 30 min. From January 25th, when I tried to run a 5K and made it 5 min, to about mid February, I was running about 25-30 min. and now, I can run over an hour with no knee pain. Alex sees things and connections that no one else I have ever see does. I went to 2 different knee specialists who were runners themselves and left with very little optimism, and zero improvement. Alex has a holistic approach to the body that cannot necessarily be taught. It's in his intuitive nature and he sees the way in which body connects. This knowledge that he has is why he can not only guide people to overcome their injuries, but can advise on how to avoid degenerative tendencies that come with age, overuse, and in my opinion... a passion for your sport. I couldn't be more thankful for his knowledge, expertise and precision when it comes to the human body and protecting it for the rest of the active I life I have. Thanks Alex! :)
