Honestly, I'm having a rough time with the bad reviews but as a native New Yorker who is a southern transplant, maybe I'm missing something. The turkey platter was delicious, I loved the collards and the Mac and cheese - in my opinion - was pretty great. The portion was healthy, included a drink and for $16 to end up with leftovers besides is right up my alley. My mom got the bbq salad with chopped chicken and was thrilled with both the portion and quality. $10 and she only got through half of it! I stopped by North GA BBQ for lunch on a Sunday. This wasn't my first visit, either. I've eaten here several times over the years because I keep hoping it'll finally click. Unfortunately, after this visit, I'm left with the same conclusion I've had before: they just can't seem to get it right. The service isn't bad enough to complain about, but it isn't memorable either. It's the kind of service where everyone does their job, but nobody makes you feel like they're glad you came. Maybe that's the expectation at a barbecue joint, but it would be nice to leave feeling like there was something worth remembering besides the receipt. The real issue is the food. I'm a brisket person, so that's usually my measuring stick for a BBQ restaurant. Unfortunately, the brisket here consistently reminds me less of smoked brisket and more of the pot roast your mom left in the crock pot all day. That's not necessarily a bad meal... it's just not what I'm paying BBQ prices for. The last time I visited, the brisket was dry, lean, and lacking much flavor. Today was somehow both better and exactly the same. About half of my brisket sandwich was actually pretty good--some fat, some tenderness, the kind of bite that makes you think, "Finally, here we go." Then the other half showed up and reminded me why I keep leaving disappointed. It's almost impressive how consistently inconsistent they are. I've had mixed experiences with the sides before, so this time I figured I'd play it safe and order fries. Surely fries are the one thing that can't go sideways. Apparently, I was feeling optimistic. The seasoning was actually a pleasant surprise, but the cook was all over the place. Some fries were crispy, some were undercooked, and somehow they all came from the same basket. Fries aren't exactly culinary gymnastics, yet they managed to turn them into a guessing game. At these prices, inconsistency shouldn't be the signature flavor. I'll end on a positive note: the sauces are genuinely good. They add flavor, variety, and are probably doing more heavy lifting than they should have to. Unfortunately, good sauce can complement good barbecue--it can't replace it. I genuinely want to like this place because good local BBQ is worth supporting. But after several visits over the years, "maybe next time" is starting to feel less like optimism and more like the restaurant's business model. read more

I stayed the week down in Dahlonega,GA. and I wanted some BBQ. I ordered the pig melt and the brisket sandwich with collards and baked beans! The pig melt was really good! Texas toast, cheese, pulled pork cooked right...how can you go wrong? The brisket was tender, smoked, and a great fat to meat ratio! But for me the star of the show was the baked beans! Those were some of the best baked beans I've ever had! I wish I'd have ordered 2 servings!! I've had BBQ from the Carolina's to Kansas City to Memphis and these folks are right up there! I will say this was some of the juiciest and yummy pork I've had. First of all we ordered a Pig Melt! This is the signature meal. They take Texas toast, cheese and chopped pork and grill it. My only complaint was that it was barely grilled and I expected more like a grilled cheese sandwich. The pork was chopped instead of shredded or pulled and again it was yummy. We used the sweet barbecue sauce so we had sweet and savory. You do order at the counter but then they do bring your meal out. Service with a smile by all staff. I ordered the 3 meat combo and the pulled pork was moist and had excellent flavor, the brisket was done to perfection, however the Turkey was less than stellar, it was dry and seemed aged in a sense. I had the brisket with coleslaw and baked beans. Also their vinegar, hot sauce, beautifully cooked. The sauce was perfect. The baked beans are seasoned with bell peppers in them, which I had never had and it added that little bit of something that makes it special. My husband had the barbecue sandwich and potatoe salad he said it was wonderful as well. I couldn't taste the potato salad because it has onions in it but that's OK. We both drank tea. Ordered the "Pig Melt" which is supposed to be a grilled cheese with chopped pork inside. The pork was good, but when I order a "grilled cheese" I expect there to be a good amount of melted cheese in it. In the photos one can observe there was a slice of American cheese that wasn't melted. I am not sure why it wasn't melted because my bread was burned on the outside as illustrated in the additional picture provided. The staff was nice. The floors were so sticky that shoes were sticking and one could hear every person's shoes making noise as they walked thru the dining room. An absolute steal for what we got with a family pack! We called ahead and ordered what was a pound of pork, one quart side of collards, one pint of baked beans, one pint of tots and one bbq sauce (we chose tangy), and the order was remarkably reasonable for the quality and quantity of food that we received! It was ready right when we walked in to pick it up and it was hot and fresh. Only small complaint is maybe offer several BBQ sauces in smaller containers rather than one out of a choice of 6 or 7 different kinds in a large container. I would've liked to have had a variety and not just a lot of one that we didn't need nearly that much of. The collards were loaded with little surprising pockets of pork pieces! I could've made a meal out of them alone! The tots were great. Baked beans are little on the goopy sweet side for my taste. The service I received when placing the order over the phone was pleasant, and the restaurant's ambiance would've been nice for a meal out; however, we elected to eat in at the rental where we were staying for the weekend. Almost like a loaded grilled cheese and toasted perfectly. I got the bbq salad and needed help finishing. The bbq ranch dressing was to die for!!! I ordered the Pig Melt with a side of Macaroni and cheese and Coleslaw as well as Banana Pudding. The food was honestly so boring and bland. The sandwich was a typically BBQ sandwich nothing remarkable about it. The coleslaw and Mac and cheese were so boring I couldn't even finish it. Both had very little taste. We frankly can't understand some of the reviews that have been posted here. This is our third trip here and the food is always delicious. We had the beef brisket and pulled pork and both were wonderful. The meat was tender, moist and flavorful. The mac and cheese was perfectly cheesy while the fried okra, baked beans, and green beans were flavorful and seasoned perfectly. If you want great GA barbecue, try it! read more

We waited in place while other customers entered. When the customer in front of us was finished, the young man taking orders kept his back to us & ignored us. Three Strikes, You're Out! I don't know how this place is still in business. Three times--yes, THREE TIMES--I've gone here craving some good barbecue ribs, and every single time, they've been out. This is a barbecue joint, right? How do you keep running out of your most popular item? It's like going to a pizza place that's always out of dough. Complete and utter incompetence. The staff didn't even seem apologetic. Just shrugged it off like it was no big deal. If you can't keep up with the demand for ribs, maybe you shouldn't be in the barbecue business at all. And it's not just about the ribs--if this is how poorly they manage their inventory, I can only imagine what corners they're cutting in the kitchen. There are plenty of other barbecue spots that actually understand what it means to serve their customers. I'll be taking my appetite (and my money) elsewhere from now on. Save yourself the disappointment and do the same. I'm a local! You may be able to fool the tourists but not me. I will not be recommending this place to friends and family!
