I've eaten here several times mainly because it's close by. The service is usually very good, which I appreciate. Unfortunately, the ground beef is very bland and the queso is thin and watery, so I'd recommend ordering items that don't include either of those. I was there last Tuesday for Taco Tuesday, and although the tacos are discounted, the meat still lacked flavor. That said, the person who appears to be the owner is very friendly -- I've spoken with him a few times and he's always been pleasant and welcoming. Finally, the Ambiance is outdated and warn down. It really doesn't have to be that good since it's both in a college and tourists town. read more

We tried El Jimador on a Friday for lunch. The food tasted fine and the portions were of standard size. The drawback was the speed of the kitchen. An order for two standard lunches shouldn't take 45 minutes. The front staff was fine and could be perceived at the flow issue in the kitchen and were helpless to fix it. read more

When we went to find a table the waitress coming from the back looked at us like we had committed and sin, rolled her eyes when we told her what the sign read and said "whatever that's fine". May have been 5 families and we waited about 45 minutes for our food which is unusual for Mexican food. Also asked for cheese dip twice and never received it. Had the waitress take it off the bill. We were in town for the Bear on the Square festival and were looking for a sit down restaurant . The reviews almost turned us away, but I'm glad that we had lunch there anyway . I had the combo quesadilla and tamale while my wife had the quesadilla . The chips and pureed salsa were good and fresh, the service good and food enjoyable . Been going to this place off and on for years. It was always pretty good but they have really stepped up their game in recent months in spite of the challenges rested by Covid (including a labor shortage). Our waitress (Mary) was nothing short of incredible while handling a big workload. The food was excellent. I had the shrimp and tilapia. Be warned that the large cheese dip is silly expensive, but other than that it was also affordable. I have it 5 stars for many reasons. read more

If I could give a zero star in a negative I would. Last night on my son's birthday we had been out all day, we all were tired and exhausted. Went here for a quick snack we are locals never been here. First of all we are fairly large people but extremely active they put us in a booth that was ultra thin we ask to move to a table. Well a couple other people came in they were ask for their orders were given their drinks. We are still sitting there no one's paying any attention to us but the waitresses are looking at us and walking around us. My son asked )who's it is his birthday) can we have someone help us waitress (who said later she is the manager) said yeah in a minute. We waited even longer. I got up later and went to the front and ask to have someone to help us. Again ... we will get to waitress soon. My family had enough and got up. I ask the girl at the register for the manager. She was like I don't know.... What! The first waitress that ignored us all along said she was the manager (with an attitude). I ask for Manager, she said ROBERTO. Should be called 'El Estafador.' I have never written a Yelp review before but this place seems to demand it. Our server was polite, friendly, helpful, attentive. She did everything right. Everything else was disappointing. To be fair, every fast-food Mexican place fries up a bunch of diced beef to put in their beef burritos. But a beef burrito in this place is only a handful of this diced meat rolled up in a tortilla with a bath of sub-par red sauce. Nothing else; no sides of any kind included. That's disappointingly lean for a plate costing more than $9 and if you want to add cheese (actually a cheese dip sauce) it's another $1.29. Another plate, the Vaca Loca is billed as "beef steak with rice and cheese" for $11+ but don't expect steak. Instead you get a handful of that same diced and fried beef on a bed of rice drowning in that same cheese sauce. Ironically, Taco Bell is much better tasting, with larger portions at half the price. read more

I wish I could give this place 0 starts. I am a college student a UNG so I come here pretty often but every time i come they are terrible. For example, we came here for my friends 21st birthday. I called about 45 min to put my name down. They put my name on their list. 45 min later we came in person and I told them I had a name on the list and they said that they couldn't take us and we would have to wait another hour and a half. Service was amazing. The waitresses seemed new, but that was okay. First walking in, you notice a dark, wooden atmosphere. Tables are unsturdy. A smell of either moist wood or "urinal rice cakes" and urine fill the room. (I only noticed this smell with a male guests comment.) I thought it smelled like moist wood, myself. After ordering a beer a small bit was spilled on the table and a Texas margarita was..honestly terrible. Either too sweet, pre made or too much triple sec. The management and the servers were great at cleaning our table from used napkins and plates. Very good at sweeping as well. My rice was soggy, though I did add queso cheese to top it. My beef taco was slightly burnt and the "beef" in question was more like a meatloaf texture than I am used to in a taco. My only good give away from here is the service and amazingly crispy chips and beer deals. I gave El Jim a second chance tonight and I was just as disappointed as the first time I came. Tonight the service was horrible, there were only a couple servers in the whole place. I ordered my food and I asked if I could get some lettuce on the side, and she said it would only be around $1, so she brought me some lettuce for my burrito and when I got my check I was charged $7 for a "guacamole salad" which I couldn't even find on the menu. You know what was on the menu, a side of lettuce for $1.50, I asked about this and she told me she could only drop the price to $4. Very unsatisfied yet again. read more

Friendly staff, the owner very involved in the restaurant and will treat you like family. Food is great, taste homemade unlike a chain restaurant. They also are open to suggestions, they have a comment/suggesting box that they check and implement. Have been a long time customer of this establishment since college in 2007. Stopped in with my father-in-law and best friend neither of whom drink alcohol. They had a bottle of "24k gold whiskey," that had been sitting on the shelf collecting dust.The bartender didn't know the price so when he asked the owner he said $7.50. If you like booty shaking club music with your chips and salsa, this is the place for you! We stopped in for dinner after riding mountain bikes at Jake Mountain and the place was cranking and thumping. The restaurant was full of young faces, college kids sure do look young these days... Our server came over and was very friendly, got our drink orders and chips and salsa right out. I had the 16 oz. margarita on the rocks, served in a pint glass, which I liked, and there was plenty of horsepower in it, another plus. If I wanted Kool-Aid, that's what I'd order.. . Big draft Dos Equis amber came out with a slice of lime for those inclined towards the big beers. The waiter kept the tea and water glasses filled for us too. The menu is crazy. My go to at most every Mexican restaurant is combo #17, its the same everywhere. Well, at El Jim, they don't have the traditional combos. When you open the black binder menu, you are assaulted with two pages of pictures. The name of it is dish is printed but no description. Its very in your face photography so of course we had to order off it. I pointed at something because, being an Ugly American, I had no idea how to pronounce it. Wound up being some straight forward steak tacos served on corn tortillas with cilantro, onion and spicy sauce. There was a picture of something called El Clark so of course Clark had to get that. He seemed to enjoy it. There was some more pages in the menu that actually had words without pictures but how could you not order from the picture menu?
