Loved our experience at the birth center! It was exactly the birthing experience we were hoping for. Kathy and Jenna were amazing, we always looked forward to our visits. Everyone at the office was very nice and helpful, they always answered all of our questions and we were never rushed. The birthing day was very smooth and easy, loved getting to use the tub for pushing! The midwives are there for checking periodically on progress and for the birthing, but not constantly in the room with you, so it was nice having a doula for extra support. (Cherish Peacewalker was great!) They had birth classes available which were nice for mental prep. Everything went well, we felt very comfortable throughout the whole process and felt very well taken care of. Would definitely recommend for a personable and natural experience and would definitely come again for our next baby! So I I delivered my second child here 3 and a half years ago. I never felt the need to write a review before unless it gives me free stuff lol but I read a lot of these negative ones some I agree with some are unfortunate but most are speculative. Just like any other office I've ever been too not everyone on the staff has a personality that blends with everyone but overall they are polite and helpful. As far as Ms Kathy is concerned she's an older woman with years of experience with that being said she is here to assist with a natural delivery (pushing process only) which is why most people have to get doulas and take classes that they offered back then and now which are mandatory. I see why because it seems people are having a hard time during labor due to lack of self knowledge and placing blame. That's unfair. This process is also your responsibility otherwise you'd probably prefer a doctors office where they provide you with little to no choice in your birth plan, labor you there and deliver or induce you or intervene with what is supposed to be a natural process. Having Ms Kathy assist you through this is not gonna be for the weak and she is not going to baby you because it's not her job to do so but she does care about getting your baby here safely and not just your baby...there are multiple woman who come to her with similar due dates not to include surprise babies so unfortunately you can't take up the rooms for long periods of time if you guys labor anything like me it took my son 36 hours before things kinda got active the office just doesn't have that type of space or man power. With knowing all of this make sure that having a mid wife is the route you want to take do your research weigh your options I know I didn't have any control over my birthing experience with my first child from being induces the feeling the epidural and pain meds gave me and how out of it I was to being pre cut to avoid "tearing" which I didn't have at all with my second. I couldn't feel only one person was there it was not a good experience and I told myself I'd never go the hospital way again. Kathy is my only option and I'm back pregnant with baby number 3. Despite reviews, and due to being on Medicaid, birthing here was my only birth center option. The pregnancy experience with this birth center was very pleasing! They were very minimal, per my preference, on labs and checks and such. Kathy was very informative, supportive, and made me feel very at ease with any concerns I had. My birth went beautifully! My only issue was that i was hoping to actually get to birth in the tub like my first birth, but I did not feel like I fit at all, so I was only able to labor in a certain position. She was very hands off, and provided minimal checks which I appreciated! I was able to labor my own way, without feeling rushed. She delivered my daughter, and our golden hour was very uninterrupted and perfect! She explained everything needed for the next few days, and MADE SURE I understood which I appreciated, because I was pretty out of it without sleep at that point. We were there for 3 hours after I gave birth, then we were able to go home. I would def recommend this center for mommas, and I'm so thankful places like this exist for mommas on assistance. I'm thankful for midwives like Kathy. Do your research for your natural births ladies, birth center or not. Know your options in every aspect. I gave birth here for both my babies and I absolutely love the ambiance here both for my checkups and when I give birth. it's a very peaceful environment and it's the closest thing to a home birth if you can't afford one. No unnecessary interventions while in labor, always checking in to make sure you're hydrated, and honestly each individual at the birth center has your best interest at heart. As soon as you have your baby, there is immediate skin to skin action between you and the baby. No interrupts that intimate time you have with your baby. The midwives are there with you through the whole laboring process reassuring you and offering different positions you can do to alleviate some of the discomfort that comes with your contractions aka surges. I recommen this birth center to anyone who is looking to have an all natural birth. I had my first baby here no complaints then and no complaints with my second baby. They gave a good experience both times around. I plan on having all of my kids here honestly! read more

Terrible service! I called for a appointment, after being rushed off the phone and being directed to email my personal confidential information of insurance card and photo ID no one got back to me. I called the next day inquiring about why no one reached out like I was lied to about, the young lady stated they still needed to verify my insurance. As someone who worked in the medical field for 3 years, the bullshit lies of it taking 1-2 months to verify is up most laziness on their part!! It's a simple web search on the insurances portal. On top of that the lady was very aggressive and speaking over me. I will be contacting another office that actually cares about patients/pregnant people! So happy I got to see the terrible service before becoming a patient, I would have been devastated to find out later in my care. Definitely don't recommend this place!! read more

I had my son Oct, 2022 and my experience was absolutely amazing! I woke up from having contractions around 7 am and i arrived at the birthing center at 11. My baby was here by 1:30pm! Im so glad i chose this place the midwifes were amazing and so supportive and i loved my doula Ms. Shay! If you're thinking about coming to this place. DO IT! My experience with the North Houston Birthing Center was wonderful ! Despite the reviews I gave it a try , which I'm so grateful I did. I moved to Houston the last 2 months of my pregnancy. The first time I met Kathy I loved her. I felt like it was going to be a wonderful experience , she was so welcoming and you get the grandmother feel from her. I went into labor on Christmas Day ! She had guest and despite it being a holiday she came right in and I labored in the tub for 5 hours. I ended up having my baby on the bed. She gave us our time for skin to skin then we took care of everything . I recommend this birth center to anyone who wants a beautiful labor & a great experience during pregnancy overall. read more

This review is for the midwife only. The facility is clean and nice. The people there were nice. But they're all not very honest. STAY AWAY! We chose this place because I wanted a Vbac. When we went to the consultation we told the midwife my history and how I wanted to try for a water birth and that this would be my second baby. we told her I had a previous c section. She said she did vbacs there. She showed us the tub, the place and the birthing balls she had and she showed me everything I could use to labor there. I was excited. All my appointments were fine and baby was super healthy. But on my third trimester appointments she brought up "so have you decided what hospital you're going to give birth at?" I was in shock and I answered "um here? That's why we chose this place." And she said "well I can't have you laboring here. You have to be at least a 9 or pushing already so I can let you have the baby here" I was in shock and in tears. That is not what she had told me on the first day of our consultation. She said she can't have me labor there because she doesn't do vbacs. Not only had she lied to me but she gave me stress towards the end of my pregnancy. I wanted to labor there. With the birth balls and in the tub. But all of the sudden she dropped that bomb on me. We agreed that she would let me go if I was at least a 7 and if I had the baby in 2 hours or less. If not that I had to walk outside until I felt like pushing. The day of my labor came and I had hired a doula so I could labor at home and she could tell me sorta when she thought I was close to a 7 so we could head to the birthing center. After many hours I felt like going so my husband called the midwife and he said that I felt ready to go over there and she said " she has to be pushing. Does she feel that pushy feeling?" And my husband said no. So the midwife said "I don't think she's quite there yet. I'm not gonna go over there to open the door for her until she feels like pushing" my husband was so mad. Because we had agreed that she would let me in when I was in active labor. He called her a few more times and she kept saying no. So we just head to the hospital and I had my baby boy. I didn't go back for my postpartum care anymore and I never answered their calls anymore. I'm so upset at them and I can't believe they sleep knowing what they did to me and who knows maybe other women! They need to close this place or put that old lady in jail. She's thirsty for money. I would've rather her told me the truth from the beginning instead of lying to me! read more

I'm writing this review because I am honestly very surprised by all the negative ones and I don't feel enough credit is given to them. Kathy, her Doula and staff were amazing to me. The front desk staff was always polite, professional and informative. The Doula (I really hate her name slipped my mind) alot of patience, very kind and down to earth, she is very easy to talk to. Kathy was very straight forward and also very informative about everything, she explained everything to me on my appointments and always let me know the process of things. One thing I can say as a reminder to other mothers looking for a birthing center is you are getting exactly that, an intimate private experience birthing your child with little to no interventions and Kathy reminded me of that my first appointments. My labor was the best experience I could've asked for. I followed Kathys instructions of calling her once I felt I was in real labor then meeting her at the birthing center. She checked me once I arrived, got me and my husband settled in a room and told us to make our selves at home. She put on a hypno-birthing disk (I think that's what got me through my labor so peaceful) then left us alone. Which I felt was exactly what I wanted, I had that security blanket that she was just in the other room if I needed and I got to labor in private with my husband. It was very intimate for us. Soon after her Doula arrived and assisted with anything needed she was very attentive the whole time, we didn't have to ask much she knew and did what was needed. I later got into the bathtub and had my baby in there. After she cleaned me up checked my baby and weighed him, we relaxed for about 3 hours then we headed home! Literally the best labor i've had out of my 3 children. I would go here again if I have another and recommend anyone looking for something like a home birth experience. read more

I had an amazing experience at this birthing center. I had my second child here. I received so much information and support during my pregnancy and after. My entire pregnancy was filled with so much care that I hadn't previously received with my first child (who I had in a hospital). The entire staff was loving, welcoming, and supportive. I had my son after about 3 hours of labor and my body was so prepared and relaxed that he came out on his own right in front of the birthing center! After he was born, I felt so at home at the center and had no pain or complications. I would recommend this experience to anyone! read more

This woman doesnt care about her patients. Dont go here. She is rude snappy and hateful. She will send u home until your about to give birth so forget about a great experience. By the time I got in there I was throwing and stressed and my birth plan was out the window and she came last minute. I have had 5 pregnancies back to back and 3 have been with Kathy and her amazing team. Once I found them I knew I would never go back any where else. THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, I LOVE THEM ALL. They make you feel so at home and comfortable. They take the time to listen and actually get to know you. And when it's go time, they got your backs no matter what! I loved Everything about NHBC. From my appointments being very well timed to the information that was giving before and after pregnancy. The birthing class that' was available also prepared me and taught me some exercises to work on and knowledge about labor the hospital will never share . I was so scared to do everything natural but this was everything I could imagine plus more . I went into labor with Shayla as my doula ( LOVE HER SHE IS AWESOME !!!! ) and it was peaceful relaxing and the perfect environment and tone for me and my partner to welcome in our daughter . I called Kathy and let her know I was in labor and we delivered my healthy daughter in three hours no complaints . I would definitely recommend and encourage every mother who is able to - to do it ! From the room to the tub to the bed it was comforting I'm so glad I was able to share this experience with them . Thank you !!! read more

My entire family and I had such an amazing experience. I can honestly say as an EMT and a board certified emergency room RN that this is absolutely the way to have a baby in today's day and age. Thanks to Kathy and her dedicated staff, I delivered a healthy baby boy after being in labor for only 2 hours! This is my third pregnancy and second birthing center experience. We just left our 6 week follow up appointment today feeling fantastic (and already back to my pre baby weight thanks to their guidance I might add). Baby boy and I seriously couldn't have had a better experience and the staff supported us the entire way through no matter what silly questions we had to ask them. As a medical professional myself, I recommend Kathy and her staff for all women wanting to have a normal birthing experience without the risk of all the medically unnecessary risks that accompany stringent hospital protocols and procedures. Kathy knows what she's doing and it's totally a safe and life changing experience. We need more providers like Kathy who want to care for babies and their mommies. I could speak so much more on the subject but seriously, you are robbing yourself of a great joy in this life if you try to have a baby in the hospital by an ob/gyn who usually went in their practice to be a $surgeon. Don't be ridiculous and undergo more than you need (unless of course you're experiencing a legit complication that warrant surgery or you just like being unnecessarily traumatized). Birth is a normal experience unlike a pathological heart attack or brain aneurysm that warrant invasive interventions. So be brave, see what your body is capable of, experience an amazing birth, trust Kathy, and be happy! I had a water birth here with my son almost 10 years ago, and I only recall wonderful memories from the whole experience. Ms. Kathy and her staff were very attentive, knowledgeable, and kind. Ms. Kathy was very compassionate and gentle; the environment felt like home, and I knew I wanted to deliver any additional children here, as well. I recently returned for my first visit with my second child, and Ms. Kathy is still as sweet and knowledgeable as I can remember. However, I almost did not see her because the receptionist's lack of professionalism. Prior to my visit, I spoke with, I believe, 3 ladies, one of which was not as friendly as the others. My former obgyn office repeatedly attempted to fax my medical records over with no success, so I retrieved my records and attempted to fax them myself. After trying 3 fax numbers (each time I called, I was given a different number), I emailed the papers, and was told they were received and that the manager would contact me to answer the concerns I had. I was not contacted, so I still had concerns the following week when I arrived to the center for my visit. On the day of my visit, the unkind receptionist was in the office. After signing in, I reminded her about my questions, and that I was not contacted by the manager. She spoke to me very rudely, and when I asked to speak to the manager, she (without making a call or going to check) said the manager was unavailable. She said I would have to email her and wait for her reply. She was unable to answer many of my questions, possibly because she repeatedly interrupted me and began talking before I could ask my questions. I asked several more times to speak to someone other than her, and although the receptionist refused to let me speak with anyone, Ms. Kathy eventually came to the front desk to hear my concerns and reply in a calm, professional manner. I had one other question that the receptionist could not answer, so she told me she would email me the information. I have not received the information, and we are now more than a week after my appointment. This post is long enough already, but I want to say that I do not have the same warm and fuzzy feeling I did with my first experience at this birth center. Ms. Kathy and the Doula that was there treated me kindly. However, I do not know if the stress I felt before, during, and after my visit (because of the receptionist) is worth returning to this Birth Center. read more

It has taken me awhile to write this review because I wanted to believe that I was being too sensitive. I had my first baby at this birth center so I had nothing to compare it to but I wanted to warn everyone. Don't buy into the midwife's act. She came off very genuine and caring prior to the birth. She had a few rude comments but then she corrected herself so I didn't think too much into it. During the birth she was not attentive and didn't seem to care. She no longer seemed caring. She clearly was going through the motions. I decided to go to back to her for postpartum care and to get help with latching. Her staff was more helpful. The final straw was when she tried to shame me for choosing to give my baby formula after a few months. I understand everyone has their views but as a health professional, you should never try to shame someone for their own personal choice. read more

If I could rate zero stars I would. The entire experience was very unprofessional and a bit unsanitary. The furniture and equipment is outdated. The nurses are, medical assistants, and unprofessional. The receptionist Brenda is not the friendliest. They have one black employee, the rest are Hispanic and white. The black employee is worked like a mule. Kathy is the head midwife and Intercept all patients from the other midwife Rowan. My appointments leading up to the birth were uncertain, all Kathy did was bash conventional hospitals, doctors and nurses to ensure I would let her deliver my baby. I lost my job during the pandemic and had no health Insurance, therefore I had to get pregnancy Medicaid. This is the only midwife in Houston that accept Medicaid. I used a Doula during my birth, which Kathy despised. When I requested to use my doula, she immediately became defensive and began to talk about her lawyers and signing disclosures. That was a red flag but I was too close to delivery to back out. At least I thought I was. Fast forward to the night of my labor. I labored at home for several hours, at the point of unbearable contractions I called Kathy to let her know we were heading to the birth center and her exact word were "no ones going anywhere until I say so" then she asked me a Series of questions, and at this point I let her know, that my contractions were close and I was in pain. Once we arrived to the BC she was very impatient and didn't want use to use any of the extra pillows that she has in the room. She actually took them away from us in a hostile way. I labored for several hours. My delivery was complicated, pushing was difficult. She got frustrated at how long I labored and told me that I wasn't pushing in a very aggressive way, at this point I asked for the paramedics to be called and then she began to change her attitude. I delivered my beautiful baby boy. The medical assistant did all of the duties after a baby is born. Kathy immediately left the room and moved on to the next patient. My baby went into distress because of lack of oxygen and he wasn't warm enough, they used an old heating pad to warm him, which didn't work. His distress became so bad to the point of me calling the paramedics and being rushed to the ER. Once the paramedics arrived Kathy became "concerned" and asked that I keep her updated! I intentionally never spoke to her again. The paramedics informed me that this BC is sketchy and that they always receive calls. I am so grateful that I made the decision to call the paramedics and get my baby to safety! Beware of North Houston Birth Center. Really Vet your midwife and the staff. This place preys on low income individuals, who are looking for a natural birth experience. I recommend African/ African Americans find a midwife that is for our people. Kathy is a cold old white, traditional southern lady. My baby could have lost his life because of her negligence. She was very rude to my black Doula, and said that she was banned from her office. Run away from this place. There are several black midwives and doulas in Houston. I'm so blessed to have overcome this experience! In Jesus name Amen. read more
