I recently visited this restaurant with my family, and we had an excellent dining experience. We ordered the Dal Tadka, Chicken Tikka Masala, Shrimp Tandoori, Vegetarian Biryani, and Naan, and every dish was absolutely delicious. The flavors were authentic, the ingredients were fresh, and each item was prepared perfectly. The Chicken Tikka Masala was rich and flavorful, the Shrimp Tandoori was tender and well-seasoned, and the Dal Tadka was comforting and full of taste. We thought walking into downtown SF, the restaurants would be great, and ended up at North India restaurant. There could not have been a bigger mistake. We ordered paneer tikka masala, matar paneer, baingan bharta, mix veg curry, and garlic naan. Paneer tikka masala was super watery and flavorless. When we asked them about it, they added a lot of black pepper and brought it back. Baingan bharta was runny and had no taste. The other curries were also completely tasteless. Good Indian food, we went on a weekday and they were pretty empty so we got seated right away. The food was decent, the service was fine, so it's a 3.75 for me. The food is alright, but the service could be better, especially when picking up takeout. When I entered to pick up my order, I told one of the staff members there that I was picking up an order and my name. He didnt say anything and just sauntered off to the only to go bag sitting on one of the tables. After inspecting it, he handed me the bag still without a word. And that was it. No greeting, no thank you, no enjoy your meal or hope to see you again. I didn't feel like my business was welcomed. Who knows, maybe it wasn't. read more

TLDR: 2.75/5 Came here because of the reviews and was a bit disappointed. Maybe it was just an off night but the food was very average for me. I ordered their lamb biryani, chicken tikka masala, and their garlic naan. The food came out fast and was a decent portion but overall was very bland. There wasn't a whole lot of flavor and the chicken was definitely a bit over cooked. Felt like they were hard blocks of meat. The naan was slightly cold but also burnt when it came out, so that tells me it wasn't freshly made and was probably just sitting under a lamp. The biryani was a bit better with a bit more flavor but still nothing to really write home about. Typical Indian restaurant vibes with average service. I maintain a healthy skepticism about buffets. While the idea of all-you-can-eat food with plentiful choices is appealing in theory, I wonder about the quality, when it is available in endless quantities, and how I will feel after getting my money's worth in practice. It seems like the advice that Subaru dispenses in their owners' manuals of not overfilling the gas tank and listening for the click should apply to filling our bellies as well. That said, driven away from my desk and onto the streets of the FiDi by intense hunger, I succumbed to the idea of immediate, serve-yourself food when I wandered by North India Restaurant. I'd been to their buffet at least a couple times pre-pandemic and maintained a positive, if vague, association. When I arrived for an early lunch on a nothing-special February Monday, I was the first guest and had the privilege of opening the still-covered pans and serving myself from untouched trays. At first glance, I was excited by the bountiful display. I quickly lost my enthusiasm after tucking into the lukewarm dal and rice. The buffet got the job of sating my hunger done, however, the food was mediocre in taste, temperature and freshness. Since I was there at the start of the buffet, I expected that the quality would be better since presumably it was newly prepared. As for the service, although there was no one else in the restaurant during my time there, the server did not take the initiative to do any more than show me to a table. Throughout my meal, I problem solved on my own or got out of my seat to ask for assistance when I noticed that my water glass had lipstick stains on it, wanted chai tea or to pay the bill. (The chai tea, by the way, was not included in the cost of the buffet, so beware when you order beverages.) This level of inattentiveness was surprising at a cloth-napkin establishment. As well, when I arrived, I noticed the server attending to pre-service side work of stuffing some kind of green leafy herb that looked like, but did not seem to be, mint, into water carafes. Although this practice led to an attractive water service, it made me uneasy drinking as the herbs that were now soaking in my beverage had, just minutes ago, been sitting in a pile on the counter and handled with bare hands. The North India Restaurant buffet was a meh experience, made more disappointing since, before committing, I checked for a high overall rating on Yelp. Lunching there left me concerned about food poisoning, feeling like I squandered coin and disinclined to return. If I did go back, I would steer clear of the buffet and order off of the menu in the hope that cooked-to-order food in smaller portions would be higher quality. read more

Came here on a Sunday late morning before going to SF MOMA (walking distance away). Staff and Service: - This area of SF is a little deserted on the weekends, so we were able to sit right away (we had a reservation as well just in case) Food: - Saag Paneer: always a good curry as it has lots of flavor - Butter Chicken: this wasn't on the menu, but we weee able to order it. And of course, it didn't disappoint. Flavorful, rich, and creamy. - Rice: this was a little on the smaller side, so we ended up ordering two (one is good enough for one person's meal, or a shared small portion amongst two people). FYI that there are peas in the rice in case anyone is allergic. - Goat cheese naan: I haven't seen this before, so we had to order it. It was tasty! If you like Indian food, this place will definitely hit the spot. The food comes out fast, the portions are generous, and perfectly spiced. We ordered several appetizers and entrees but the Tandoori Chicken stole the show. They serve it in heated cast iron dish so it comes out steaming hot. The samosas were also a big hit as an appetizer. My only critique is our waiter didn't seem to speak English very well which made communicating a little tough. This is a very solid north Indian buffet auction in San Francisco. I brought a lunch group here recently with a few dietary restrictions and the ownership was happy to offer a walk-through of the buffet to highlight items that were suitable as well as offer the menu to the guest and point out items that were also suitable from there. Most of us, of course, offered for the buffet, which had a wide variety of delicious items some of which were unexpected to me given my experience with other similar buffets. The fish pakora was really delicious, and I typically expect that dish to be a bit dry and not so great in buffet settings. I was happy to see goat curry too, which was tasty. I also enjoyed the mini samosas and their tandoori chicken was also quite delicious with a nice Rich marinade and char flavor. But what got me going back for more we're not so surprisingly the vegetarian dishes, especially the lentils and everything was even better with a little bit of their house, min chutney. Service was kind of what you expect quiet efficient and direct. But I liked that I noticed staff keeping the buffet refreshed and lots of new dishes coming out during the entirety of our visit. If you like Indian food, I need a quick quality lunch option. This is certainly one that I would recommend. read more

Probably one of the worst restaurant experiences we've had in the city. Something went wrong at every step. Within 5min of sitting down, a waiter dropped a tray of plates and one of the pieces hit my toes, okay that can happen. We placed our order and my friend got a mango lassi. The mango lassi came out right away which she was excited about but it was luke warm so was probably sitting out on some counter. Then our food started coming out and we didn't recognize the items. We tried to communicate to the waiter but he didn't seem to understand English so we had to hunt down another server. Then our actual food came out, one of the dishes being Chana masala. The serving spoon had disappeared inside and when flagging it to the server, he suggested we just take it out before replacing it after seeing our reaction. They also mixed the garlic and goat cheese naan together and we had to look closely to distinguish between the two. Then at the end, when we were ready to exit, we asked for the bill and were given the WRONG bill that we almost paid for. The food was okay but the service was atrocious. It's good! The curry was savory and tasty with the right amount of kick. It feels they put effort into everything: the water was mint water, the rice had peas in them, the garlic naan looked gorgeous in presentation and color. Lots of south Asians at the restaurant so you know it's authentic. The decor feels sightly fancy but the food isn't too pricy. I called them beforehand and they were very friendly. The service was good. There were a few times the server couldn't understand us well. We had a large group and it seems he assumed we were doing family style, but we sorted it out. While the price was ok, the lunch buffet was mediocre at best. The paneer in the sag paneer was way to small, soft and it was hard to find any. The Nan was left on the counter to take what we wanted, but many of the pieces were dried out. And dried out seems to be a theme as many of the other items were also dried out. The only stand out dish was the (butter) chicken. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to this place. Too many other quality Indian joints in SF and South Bay (where I live). read more

I have Seen North India restaurant pop up in my feed when looking at food places in SF for a while, so I knew I had to try it out sometime! We were in the area about to go home and I saw reviews that this was also a nice spot to order takeout. I thought why not - this will be a great addition to my dinner tonight! For food we ordered the chicken tikka masala to go and I must say this was delicious. The gravy here is creamy and delicious and worth every single bite! I want to call out the guy who helped give me my order because I did not order any rice but he still packed some for me which I thought was very generous of him. Overall the food was an 11/10. When I went to pick up my order I do want to call out that the ambiance was very nice. Definitely also a good spot to sit and order food, which I will be doing next time! read more

I came by on a Sunday evening and was one of the few groups of people in the restaurant. From the start, I was surprised by how ornate the cutlery and glassware were. Everything looked really fancy and nice. We ordered the whole tandoori chicken, lamb biryani, daal, and naan. The biryani, daal, and naan were wonderful and I have absolutely no complaints. The tandoori chicken tasted great too. However, what we got consisted of a few drumsticks and two breasts. I felt misled by the description of whole chicken. Been NEEDING to PRAISE this place for a week now. I stumbled in at 9:15pm by myself after work. They're open until 11! Had the most excellent vegetable pakora I've ever had with a delicious sauce. Then ordered Tandoori Chicken on a whim (can't say I've ever had it.) It came out SIZZLING on a platter and was legit PERFECTLY cooked, tender pieces of chicken with just the right amount of smoke flavor and seasoning with onions. I only had the half order, and I saved half of it for the next day stir fried with rice and it was still bomb.com! Finished off with Gulab jamun - which was also superb. Massive kudos to this place. This place was absolutely delicious. This is by far the best chicken tikka masala I've ever had in my life. The doahl is delicious and the mango drink was phenomenal.. I came here based on the great Yelp reviews, but unfortunately the food was pretty average. The curry lacked the aromatic depth and balance I expected of a good Indian restaurant--saltiness was the first thing that hit my tongue. The chicken dishes featured large, bland chunks of white meat with little texture or flavor. In general, I find that even mediocre Indian or Thai restaurants in the U.S. tend to get rave reviews because Americans love rich sauces and gravies, regardless of the quality. As long as these are slathered onto a dish, it'll get five stars :-D read more
