We just flew in from LA, and this was our very first stop before even checking into our hotel, and we could not have picked a better spot! From the moment we walked in, the staff and overall team were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. The ambience and aesthetics are gorgeous, creating such a great vibe to unwind after a flight. To top it all off, the food was absolutely delicious. I don't think the chef has any taste buds... because how else could food this bland make it onto a plate? Every bite tasted like seasoned cardboard. I'm still trying to figure out where the flavor was supposed to be. It was so bad I had to stop for chili afterward just to reset my palate. Otherwise, I might've died of culinary disappointment. The New Delhi restaurant is one of the more interesting places to dine in San Francisco. From the outside, it seems a bit non-descript, but inside, you're welcomed into a cavernous restaurant with high ceilings. I believe it was a former ballroom. The menu is extensive, with over a hundred items. On a typical night, Chef Dey, who's the owner of the restaurant, can be found going table to table, conversing with diners. Talking with him, I learned more about spices than the time when I travelled to India. They also sell special spice mixes for you to take home. I'll have to check out his TV series on Indian food and catch up on my Indian cuisine and historical knowledge, too! If you're out with a group that has different tastes and dietary requirements, this is a great place to go. He was very accommodative of the meat-eaters and vegetarians at our table, coming up with variations of items that were not specifically on the menu. read more

New Delhi is the oldest Indian restaurant in the city, and it is magnificent. The space has ornate decor with large detailed pillars and art showcasing maharajas. I went for an event with Saikat Chakrabarti and they provided an amazing lunch. Chef Ranjan Dey spoke with such vivacious energy and his food was fantastic. I applaud him for showcasing classic Indian dishes rather than just chicken tikka masala. The spice level was perfect. The yellow dal was seasoned perfectly, and I loved the sag chunna! Everything was delicious, not greasy at all. He puts a lot of love in the food. I highly recommend visiting! read more

I just dined there by myself. While it was a bit pricey, I enjoyed every bit of the food. The service was great. The servers were attentive but not intrusive. The very, very handsome young man delivering the food was incredible. He was graceful and deliberate in how he gently moved things around the table and then set down the dishes of food. He announced each dish as he set it on the table. He made a respectful bow before leaving the table. He was impressive to say the least. I felt like royalty. Ambiance is really nice! It felt like a hole in the wall from the street but deceptively big & welcoming. Made a reservation but didn't really need one for an early dinner on a Sunday. It was quiet & we got a lot of attention from the waiter. Easy to get to. Quite a few public parking options within a block. Food was a little disappointing for an Indian family. They tried little twists to traditional dishes that didn't work for us. Butter Chicken wasn't boneless like the kids expected. Garlic naan had an "interesting" chutney on it... again not what we were expecting or enjoyed. All the entrees come with rice & naan on the side. Surprisingly the flavored rice was my favorite. The Tandoori Prawn & Onion Kulcha were good. Overall the experience didn't live upto the hype. But if you are new to Indian food & have no expectations, it's not bad. read more

We were visiting SF from Tennessee. We went there on a Friday night when we couldn't find a reservation anywhere else nearby. The restaurant wasn't busy so it was pleasantly quiet. We were greeted promptly and guided to our table. The service was very good, and the food tasted good. I don't remember what I ordered unfortunately as I'm writing this over one week afterwards. The most pathetic service I have ever experienced. 100% attitude and 0% empathy. One of the servers literally said, "We have been working since morning, that's why we are slow and have attitude." We were never informed that items were out of stock, and when we politely asked, all we received was rude behavior. To make it worse, the server responded with, "I'm not the owner, so how would I know the chai is out of stock?" Basic communication and respect towards customers should not be this difficult. read more

Fantastic food, ambiance and great service. San Francisco's longest running Indian restaurant. They are standing tall for a reason. Chef Ranjan Dey treats every guest with a warm welcome and recommends his well crafted dishes that you can only find at his restaurant. The entrance is very unassuming, as you enter you will be surprised by the grandiose bar and dining room. Decorated walls of Maharajas. Beautifully folded table napkins and plate setting. The whole experience was filled with so much warmth and thoughtfulness. The food was absolutely DEYLICIOUS!!!! We had the keralan pepper chicken, tandoori platter, black dal, garlic and plain naan, lamb, pullao, assorted appetizers with pakora, chutneys and many more. And the BEST gulab jamun! We visited this restaurant around 6:30 PM while walking by and decided to stop in for chai and some snacks. The restaurant was nearly empty, with only one person at the bar, yet the service we experienced was unexpectedly poor from the start. The host seated the four of us and provided menus, but when he returned a few minutes later and I began ordering--starting with three chais--he interrupted and told us that if we were only there for snacks, we could not stay. This interaction was both surprising and unprofessional. When we asked for clarification, he stated that unless we were having a full dinner and spending at least $20 per person, we wouldn't be accommodated. We hadn't even finished placing our order at that point. We explained that we intended to order food, but regardless, guests should be able to come in for chai and light bites without being treated this way. We went ahead and ordered an assorted vegetable platter, paneer pakoda, samosa chaat, and an assorted tandoori platter. Unfortunately, the food quality did not meet expectations. The vegetable platter included mini samosas with barely any filling, and we were told they are sourced externally rather than made in-house. The paneer was quite hard, and the items in the tandoori platter were overcooked and rubbery. The samosa chaat was average at best. When we shared feedback, the poor service continued. The server was dismissive and made an inappropriate comment suggesting that we didn't like the food because we are Indian, which was both unprofessional and irrelevant--especially given that this is an Indian restaurant. Overall, the combination of consistently poor service and subpar food made for a very disappointing experience. Given the quality and attitude we encountered, it's not surprising the restaurant was empty. I would not recommend this place. read more

This place is great! Fast service, excellent food, fun atmosphere. I really like the wide range of options and the brief history of some of the styles of food available on the menu. The mango prawn was a real treat and that was some of the best tandoori salmon I've had. The spiced rice was especially delightful and I'd have ordered more if I wasn't so full from my dinner. I highly recommend this place. I also really like the attention to details this place takes. The food plates are warmed before being placed and place setting plates are removed just before food is served. Food is served simultaneously for each course and at the perfect temperature for each dish, admirable work at this price point. And you can tell the prawns have been properly prepared for optimal texture. Really lives up to the fine dining classification in a way that other restaurants at a similar price do not. read more

If you're looking for delicious authentic Indian food, and amazing customer service then New Delhi is the spot!! I truly enjoyed all the options they had to offer on their menu. I love how they cater to all diets such as vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, you name it! We arrived during their opening time and found street parking close by, and seen there was a bar at the front of the restaurant. The bar was a vibe too! Worst Indian food!!! Terrible food and bad service. The salad wasn't fresh, chicken seemed to melt frozen ones, not tender at all. And metal smell from the veggies on the hot plate. They just warmed up the nuns from bags. read more

I had been in conversations with the restaurant to have a dinner here planned for about 14 people for a long time. I was really looking forward to a good experience with my group. However, as soon as I arrived with two colleagues, we were pressured to order an expensive set menu in which we all would share (about $38 per person). Additionally, we were told if we did not get this set menu we would have to wait 1.5 hours to get the food ordered a la carte, and we would put pressure on the kitchen and on the restaurant as a whole. This was not a good experience as I had told them from the beginning we were interested in a la carte ordering. When the food arrived it was not really enough for everybody and it was not the quality I expected for $38. Overall, I hope they can change their approach to large groups as we felt pressured to take an approach we did not want and that was not worth the price. I thank the staff and the host for taking care of us during the night, but I wish the approach was different. The place is really cozy, there is a nice ambiance and the bar is a very nice place to hang out. read more

New Delhi was such a treat! When you walk in, it looks like an unassuming narrow hallway, a classic hole in the way. Then, the room opens to a beautiful space with columns, art and awards. Chef Ranjan intentionally designed this space that way, harkening to many historical sites around the world. The food was all really yummy. Chef Ranjan encouraged us to order outside of the usual tikkas and try his specialities. There's a page that explains his 6 unique spice blends and the history/inspiration behind each of their creations. My favorite was the lemon mustard fish curry, but they were all really unique! The tandoori mix was my second favorite as all the meats were delicious and perfectly cooked. When I eat Indian food, I usually feel like all the spices hit me at once, but the food here is more delicate and layered, where the flavors come through slower. It was a real treat to try something different! This is a great place to get drinks as well! At $10-14 a piece, the drinks are easily some of the best deals in the city. There are classic drinks and slight Indian twists on others. Overall, a really fun time. Finally, you should come for the people. Chef Ranjan personally came by every table, was so joyous and knowledgeable and fun. Our servers were super attentive and even helped us before we knew we needed help! We have come here a couple of times before our SF Playhouse show, and the ambiance here is amazing. The ceilings are high, the tables are set up beautifully, and the service is splendid. We enjoy our dinners here. We've had a few things here now, including the Rogan Josh, Mattar Paneer, naan, rice, chicken tikka masala, a couple of other veggie dishes, and dessert. I think my biggest thing here is that the food is not served super warm, but instead closer to lukewarm in the times that I've had food from them. The food has good flavor, but I think it could use some more warm heat or something. But everyone always enjoys what they get from here, as well as the kind service. I'm glad this place exists and it seems popular for its cocktail bar too, since sometimes the food side is not so busy but the bar side is. read more

We ordered the fish tikka, mango prawns, and the mango lassi. The mango lassi was delicious and I couldn't get enough! The fish tikka was amazing and paired really well with the table sauces. The mango prawns was a very unique dish that I really enjoyed, and it came with naan and rice. The rice was unbelievably good, and you could really taste all the spices. Overall it was a great meal. We had an amazing dinner there this evening and our entire party of 11 was delighted. We were there early and got to go to the kitchen to see how the breads are made. "zero Stars". Never had such taste. We ordered 3 vegetable entries but after taking the order were told they dont have them. We ordered Vegetable curry and it had foul smell in it. We complained of the smell but the waiter made the excuse that "nowadays the vegetables have the bad smell" . San Franscico is known for Great Indian restaurants- but not this one. The portions were also much less then the standard size they serve at the restaurant. They were almost half. The nan size was also not good. New Delhi Restaurant's curries were the best of the best when it comes to what's satisfying for the dinner night. Leave it to the owner of the restaurant who created family recipes with love. Want to know how good his restaurant was? Keep reading. I started off with a warm glass of masala chai. I had chai latte many times in each café, and the best one happened to be Chai Cart's masala chai. Here in New Delhi Restaurant, this spiced milk tea was less gingery, more boldly as I went down to the last sip. Its green salad still had my attention due to having onion strips blended in. I'm glad I never had too many onions since they're enough to make my breath stink. Onto the special entreé! Setting between the accented seasoned basmati rice and four pieces of plain naan bread was the most ancient curry that had been eaten for ages, Benarasi Mattar Ghugni. Its spicy level was just right and the presentation was impeccable. I broke a sweat already after a few good spoonfuls, but it's a lot of fun tasting such a great dish! Money's worth likewise. Plus, I got to finish my plain naan bread compared to not finishing them last year at another Indian restaurant. For dessert, I ordered four deliciously sweet and fragrant milk balls. One bite, and the rose syrup came out like a sponge. Customer service in New Delhi Restaurant was good and pleasant. The interior looked grand and magnificent. The background songs and music kinda take me back in time where I sit on the carpet and watch belly dancers live. Loved their paintings on the wall. If you were to make it to the first area of Tenderloin, then you'll likely make it to the most famous Indian restaurant in our big city. Namaste! read more

I walked into this place while taking a stroll around the neighborhood and I'm so glad I did. There were so many vegetarian options it was hard to choose. I decided to get the vegetarian dinner since it had an appetizer and desert The waiter was really sweet and fast and even brought out the owner when I had a question about the food. The owner was so cool and excited to talk about the dishes at his restaurant. He was making the rounds to a lot of the tables sharing stories about why he liked certain things on the menu, and he mentioned making a documentary about food too. The food was really good! The fritters were especially delicious Prices were a little on the higher side - with tip my dinner was about $45 for one - BUT I got a high ticket item. Ranjan Dey is the owner and master storyteller of New Delhi Indian Restaurant. He is a community leader, has helped countless people in the community, and always had a smile for everyone! His restaurant career has spanned multiple countries and cities around the world! He has his Netflix and book projects in the works! Stop by and pick up his personal Indian spice line too! I have been here a few times. The garlic naan is light and tasty, the chicken tikka masala is a tad spicy without being overly strong, and the chai as well as Taj Mahal beer was on point. The desserts were a bit on the sweeter taste for me, but my friends loved it! There is a bar at the front and if you stop by after 9/10 PM, you will run into many of the local staff members from the industry. He goes around to each table and greets all his guests with such warmth. And his staff is so attentive. Okay, so what I've learned about this restaurant. This is a legacy restaurant meaning it was in business for over 30 years and has to be approved by the board of supervisors and mayor to get that title (def a really big deal). The restaurant is beautiful and when you walk in; there's definitely a wow factor. This restaurant is considered a fancier Indian spot and rightfully so because it's beautiful. Now, let's talk about food. We've tried so dishes with chef's special spices (that he aso sell) and everything was delicious! My favorite has to be their eggplant and samplers. I would love to see the support from this community To help support this legendary restaurant.
