You have the option to take the stairs or elevator to the second floor to reach the arena. There is plenty of seating with cool A/C. Today I was here to attend my daughter's graduation ceremony. The arena was a bit difficult to find, but luckily I found someone who was nice enough to direct me where to go. There is a parking garage just walking distance from the arena. The rainy weather could not dampen anyone's spirit as the graduates of South Broward High School, Class of 2025 received their diplomas. It was a proud moment for myself and everyone in attendance.

Essentially North Miami's version of that "food truck park by the Miami Riverfront named with a 'W', the NoMi Village is a good spot for a casual get together. There are a couple of food trucks / carts; when I went there were about 5 including pizza, Chinese & Caribbean dishes. The centerpiece is a bar with a few tables on a wooden deck. There was also a mobile bowling truck and a DJ. For the food, I ordered a prosciutto and mozzarella pizza. The truck - Piacere - had a brick oven and my pie was made fresh to order with perfectly salty and generously portioned prosciutto, a big ball of mozzarella. The crust was nice and chewy, with a light char. The chicken empanada I tried from a friend's order was also well seasoned. Drinks-wise, I enjoyed their Bacardi silver mojito. It was well blended although I did have to remind the bartender to actually add liquor as the pour was a little on the weak side. This happened with various cocktails of other people in my group. For at least the first part of the night, there was only one bartender (on a Friday night) and the line tended to build up.

Land for the stadium was once owned by the Matheson family who deeded it over to the City of Miami for the creation of a stadium that would be used as the world's first power boat racing stadium. When the stadium was poured in 1963, its 326-foot, fold-plate roof was the longest span of cantilevered concrete on earth. Sadly, on the stadiums opening day, December 27,1963, speedboat racer James Tapp was killed. The Miami Marine Stadium would go on to see more fatalities when Hank Bowman was killed on January 8, 1966 and Skip Walther died on June 2, 1974. The Miami Marine Stadium is considered a masterwork of civic architecture and modern construction. Miami Marine Stadium has been the setting for countless boat races, concerts, and even religious services, In 1967 it was used as the backdrop of the Elvis Presley movie Clambake during Elvis's speedboat race. Memorable concert performances held here include Queen, The Beach Boys, Steppenwolf, Dave Brubeck. Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, Miami Philharmonic, Ray Charles and many more. Phil Donahue once did a show here. After Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the Miami Marine Stadium was deemed unsafe. Today it sits fenced off and covered in graffiti. Plans to demolish the stadium in 2008 sparked the creation of the Friends of Miami Marine Stadium (FMMS) who formed on February 20, 2008,to develop a feasible plan for the restoration of the property. FMMS was able to secure a historic designation by Miami's Historic Preservation and Environmental Board. in 2009 the stadium was added to the National Trust for Historic Preservations 11 Most Endangered List. The National Trust of Historic Preservation has listed more than 300 sites and has been very successful in galvanizing preservation efforts to save all but a handful of them In 2018 the stadium was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One year ago Cuban-American architect Hilario Candela, who designed the iconic stadium, died at age 87 from complications with COVID-19. Urgency to save the stadium in his memory continues. Last year Miami had plans to hire to a contractor to see where the stadium needs restoration. Bond money is expected to be used to fund the project. Local celebrities like Gloria Estefan and Jimmy Buffet have been vocal in their support for restoration. Right now the area in front of the stadium is being used for the Magic Mike show. In the past the city has staged Covid testing here. I have been keeping an eye on this Miami landmark for years without seeing much going on. Hopefully 2023 will be the year real work begins.

Hard to believe not too long ago, in the 60s, this stadium, and the body of water it faces (we call it basin) was the center of attraction in Miami. As Miami hosted speed boat races featuring the likes of Ms. Budweiser, the stadium was filled with spectators, and later on in the evening, the was a giant raft, which was still around a couple of years ago, which they used to equip with a bar and a DJ, and dozens of people would dance the night away, floating in the basin. As those days faded away, the stadium was left to rot away, and now it has become what it is. Marked as a Miami historic site, it cannot be demolished, and no company is willing to take the responsibility of fixing it up, as the damage to its core is pretty significant. The stadium is closed to public, but you can get a good view of it from the basin. If you paddle a small boat, you can go under the stadium and see that it is covered with graffiti. I see the stadium several times a week, and every time I look at it, it makes me sad, thinking about how beautiful it once was, and now it is left to rot

This past Saturday February 8th, my friend and I had the chance to attend Hialeah's first Food & Wine festival. Held in the historic Hialeah Park Racetrack & Casino, the venue provided an awesome setting for this event. The string lights over the tasting area, the classic cars & historic clubhouse for photo opps (and the practicality of potty) along with photo booths & set pieces along the food tasting area made for a fun night. But let's get to the main part of the title - food & wine! Pretty much right from the start we were greeted by a mix of chains and local Hialeah eateries. Our first bites were a spicy garbanzo and short rib made in the famous "Caja China" by Trigo. La Bodeguita (another fav) showcased their both their manchego as well as a spicy chicken croquetas, as well as vino of course. Fresa Francesa, Hialeah's first trendy retaurant had a yummy risotto. The Outback "en la 49" treated us to a delicious sampler plate of steak, Mac and cheese and of course, wine! Oh and Hialeah institution Molina's Ranch had moros and lechon. For those of us who grew up in the area, it was great to try Hill's Cafe. Why the nostalgia? Well Hillary the owner used to be a manager at Miami Lakes' institution Beverly Hills Cafe. From what I understand, the plan is to bring back some of the nostalgic favorites. The caprese skewers I tried were fresh, and provided a great tease of their salads and other dishes. Can't wait for them to officially open! Of course, there was plenty of wine, cocktails and a commemorative wine glass. Rum, Reds, Whites, all you want! There was even colada and cortaditos. Upon arriving to the venue, a big random man in a store bought neon vest stood outside blocking the entrance to the public parking. He would not let people pass him unless you paid him money first. Then we still had to pay the meter for said public parking. Others once inside had the same complaint and it's a darn shame. Many of the people for The Moth had never been to this theater and would likely not return. I hate being hustled and this left a sour taste in my mouth. The money I would have spent inside supporting the bar, I was nickled and dimed outside. I really would not want to return to this location.
