The cueing was so fluid that as we repeatedly moved from Star Pose into Goddess, I disappeared into the rhythm of Levo (Club Edit) by Recondite. (Completely immersed.) They've found the Goldilocks of hot yoga: The heat, the lighting, the pacing, the music, the movement. Everything feels just right. (If you're curious about hot yoga, this is an easy studio to recommend.) The Tribe: Presence in Practice During my short visit, I noticed people holding doors for one another, making eye contact, and smiling. After class, when I asked Áine about the music, she didn't simply tell me the song. She walked me through Spotify until we found the playlist. Space & Place: Modern bohemian Exposed brick. Skylights. I've been a Modo Yoga fam since 2018... After having some back issues, I decided to work on my mobility by taking hot yoga classes. I had tried a couple other hot yoga studios, but I became a member at this studio because of the facility. It's clean and did not have any lingering odors. I have major sensitivity to scents/odors... Although I cannot do anything about scents/odors coming from other patrons, most are mindful. The staff here are all great. I appreciate the inclusiveness and enjoy the different classes for different levels. The only negative thing I would say about the location is the parking situation. The paid parking lot isn't really ideal, metered and street parking is scarce. Parking seems to be slightly better in the evenings. Overall, Modo Yoga has a special place in my heart! read more

This studio feels uptight. Compared to other yoga studios I've been too it's big on rules, make sure you don't accidentally wear shoes into the locker room, no speaking once entering the yoga room. Maybe that's your thing but I don't get the genuine brightness and energy I do going to core power. Granted I live an hour and a half outside LA and that could be contributing. Living near the beach and slower pace makes people chill out more. It's just an uptight vibe with little genuine joy. Also it's expensive in my opinion. From the moment I walked in, Payton at the front desk made me feel so welcome. She was kind, warm, and made what could have been an intimidating experience feel comfortable. The instructors, especially Ms. T, were equally wonderful. Everyone was encouraging and created such a positive environment. Unfortunately, during class I started feeling lightheaded and my ears began ringing. I was embarrassed and honestly felt defeated. I ended up stepping out because I knew I needed to listen to my body. Instead of feeling judged, I was met with so much kindness and support. A gentleman outside gave me water with electrolytes and reminded me of something I really needed to hear: that I should be proud of myself for showing up. It was my first class in a long time, and he helped me remember that taking the first step is an accomplishment in itself. What stands out most about North Ray Yoga isn't just the workout--it's the people. The kindness, patience, and encouragement I received turned what could have been an embarrassing experience into one that left me feeling supported and motivated to come back. What an amazing experience. The staff was friendly and welcoming - ASK FOR PEYTON! - and the instructor was terrific. Even when a Karen surprisingly started some drama, the instructor kept her cool (not easy to do in a hot yoga class). It was illuminating, educational and relaxing all at the same time. I was also pleasantly surprised by their use of music, ambient sound effects, and - the instructor ACTUALLY SANG TO US - and it was BEAUTIFUL. They even have showers there, so you can IMMEDIATELY and CONVENIENTLY get to your next destination. I arrived at Modo Yoga today literally 30 seconds after class start time. I had a large bag, was clearly rushing, and was out of breath from running to make it. The time turned 12:01 as I walked in. Despite that, the front desk person, Rachael, refused to let me in. I fully understand the studio has a late policy, and I respect that. But what made this experience disappointing wasn't the rule -- it was the attitude. Instead of a simple, friendly explanation, I was met with condescension and a dismissive tone. Rachael shook her head at me and acted like I was trying to get away with something, when I was clearly doing everything I could to arrive on time. A little empathy goes a long way. Policies are policies, but kindness and professionalism matter -- especially in a wellness environment. I love yoga, and I believe in grace and compassion. I recently became obsessed with hot yoga after trying it for the first time in July 2023. I had an incredible experience at Modo hot yoga studio, and I can't help but praise it. I'm on class pass and recently had the opportunity to practice in many yoga studios, such as CorePower Yoga, Sweat Yoga, y6, and more. Modo yoga is my top priority when I book a hot yoga session on ClassPass. I live in Santa Monica, and since they closed the Venice location, this is the closest location to me. From the moment I stepped in, the cleanliness of the facility stood out. The well-maintained space added to the peaceful ambiance, making it a welcoming environment for a rejuvenating yoga practice. What sets this studio apart is not just the ambiance but the expertise of the instructors. Their deep knowledge of yoga and its nuances is evident in every class, ensuring a fulfilling and practical session. Additionally, the convenience of renting mats and towels makes the experience hassle-free. The cherry on top is the spacious showers and bathrooms with everything you need post-practice, enhancing overall comfort and satisfaction. Nothing is like a cold shower after a sweaty, hot yoga session. If you're in Los Angeles and looking for a top-notch hot yoga experience, this studio should be at the top of your list. Parking- during the AM, you can park on the side street; it's free for two hours even if you don't have a parking permit. Modo is now North Ray Yoga. I have been going here since 2018. This is the finest yoga studio in Los Angeles! I have been doing yoga since 1998 and this is the place! Why? The best teachers in Los Angeles! Expreienced, caring, kowledgeable abou the body and yoga and care about the students. The classes are curated and the teachers que the class so you know where you should be and they contune to keep and eye on each student to help puch you to be better... Not that it is a compeltion, but I alwsys need remdining to improve the poses. The room is hot, there is ZERO pretention in this place. The community vibe is real here! No competition, no Hollywood type of tick tock people being seld indulgeng, just a down home experience focused on people DOING YOGA- FULL STOP! I started practicing here a long time ago. Like, way-before-the-pandemic years ago. Perhaps this review is long overdue, but any changes the studio made over time have only improved the student experience. So, five stars then, five stars now. It was my first hot yoga studio (in LA). I was regular for a while, and then life got all complicated, so I wasn't. I went to other studios here and there, but I knew if I were to ever be regular again, it'd be at Modo Yoga La Brea. Today, I went back for the first time in years, and I realized it was home. This is home to me. I didn't know, but so it has been. When either my body or my spirit is in knots, I sweat it out in Studio A under the moon-like paper pendant light over my head, and things are OK again. I might not be able to hold an eagle pose for all of the counts, but I can hold myself through the day with the peace I found while tangled in my own limbs. I feel like that's the core of any yoga practice--and I learned it here. Caroline, Anita, and Diane are all amazing instructors. I'm sure the others whom I haven't had a chance to meet are also incredible people. The studio is warm, welcoming, and generally well-kept. Never really had issues with rentals, either. That all said, yes. Parking is a sh*t show, especially for the evening classes... Where in Los Angeles is it not, though? I heard the studio is working on a solution. So, in the meantime, give yourself enough time to arrive early, and you'll find spots around the neighborhood. read more

The class itself was a hit. Street parking is metered, I was able to snag a spot directly in front for my class at noon. Checking in was a breeze. I arrived a few minutes early as instructed , and most of the patrons seemed to be regulars. Caroline who was working the front desk (not the instructor) was pleasant and although I came prepared with my own gear, was reluctant enough to provide me with the works for my first experience at MYLA. That included a mat towel, sweat towel and yoga mat. The facility appears welcoming and cleanly, that doesn't seem to be up for debate. (There was a subtle hint of funk in the studio. I couldn't decipher if it was coming from somebody, or somewhere. I imagine it comes with the territory.) Shoes come off at the door, there are cubbies available for use to ensure a tidy surface. I noticed a cold plunge room on my own as I wasn't exactly provided with a tour of the facility. There are refillable water stations and I overheard someone request a water, so I do believe they also have some for sale. Lockers are available in the dressing room along with what I am lead to believe are showers. The class itself was well paced, heated what felt like accordingly and instructed smoothly. I felt satisfied throughout by Caroline (the trainer). Given the overall aesthetic, I was hoping for a more personable experience. Modo Yoga wasn't giving warm, or community based which I'm not mad at. Nevertheless off the strength of that, I personally wouldn't go outta my way to recommend or return. The instructor was hanging out by the front desk once class concluded. She interacted selectively, even graciously greeting an arrival and departing. I sat there gathering myself and my belongings hesitantly thinking. Maybe someone will discuss options with me, or throw some type of acknowledgement my way. I thought wrong. First time here and didn't get to take the class. Based on past reviews, they don't seem to care about first impressions and also don't seem to want any Class Pass patrons. I was looking forward to this class all day. Stuck at home with a toddler waiting by the door for my partner to get home. And I arrived and felt so very unwelcome and uncomfortable which really is the opposite of how anyone should feel at a yoga studio. I arrived at 5:31 for a 5:30 class (and yes that is definitely on me) but when your yoga studio is on a super busy traffic street (Glendale blvd) and ALL the open spots for parking were coned off then maybe you should give a 5 minute grace period maybe even 3, like EVERY other studio in Los Angeles. They did offer a pass to come back but I got charged for this class and they made sure that I knew it was my own fault. Also I didn't actually receive the promised pass that I was informed would expire in 30 days but at this point I won't use it anyway. There are so many beautiful welcoming yoga studios in LA. I was excited to try this one out but I'll go back to my regulars fave spots. Kinship, still, One down dog, Silverlake. So many amazing places. read more

I was a regular at the La Brea location before the pandemic. However, I cancelled my membership when they only allowed vaccinated people to attend classes once they started them again after the shutdown. Bummed me out for many reasons, especially because of the "Everyone Welcome" stickers they had posted in the windows at the time. Apparently, that wasn't the case, but...bygones. I noticed they've since been removed...lol. Now that we've passed the pandemic, I've started dropping in again for a class here and there. I do like the studio and the changes they've made since I was here in 2020, like not having the lines for the mat placements so close together, self-locking lockers, etc. The place is very clean, and since I've been frequenting the studio again, all the staff I've interacted with have been courteous and welcoming. read more

Wow, what a negative experience. I signed up for a class here for a class a week ago through Classpass. It was a 7:30am class and I got there at 7:28am. The front desk seemed agitated with me and said I could do the paperwork after. I said that was fine and asked them if being parked in the lot beside them was okay. Another girl taking the class parked there, so I figured as much. They told me no and that I could "run" to find other parking and if I could make it in two minutes I could stay in the class. I did. But wow, ick. Bad start. I get in and the teacher waits for me, aggravated. I thought this was bizarre. My usual yoga spot is Center for Yoga LA in Larchmont and they have a ten minute grace period, because they don't provide a parking lot, LA parking is tough, and you don't want to be super stressed out coming into a yoga class.It's welcoming and inclusive. Center for Yoga feels like the type of spot a mom could drop her kid off and run over five min in and de-stress in class. That morning I just had a meeting during what would be my usual class, so I decided to try out Modo. Mistake. Anyway, I go into the class, and it's packed wall to wall. It's hot. Not the 90 degrees I'm used to. Because so many people are crammed, the humidity is UP. I realize quick that because I was rushed in, I have little water and am going to struggle through this class. I do the class. It was fine, very athletic for yoga. Think Corepower. Not for me. Anyway, around 40 min in I go outside to grab water and take a break. The heat was just a lot for me. Someone from the front desk approaches me in a culty way and asks if I'm okay. I say yes. She grabs me some electrolytes. This was very sweet, but felt odd. I go back into class and the teacher, April does a little monologue about how we shouldn't leave class because it's good to stay in the heat. I'm pretty agitated at this point considering her first class monologue was about how we should trust and listen to and honor our bodies. So this went against that logic. After class I finish filling things out and April and I were awkwardly standing together for some time. She didn't do a single check-in with me about class. I said bye and left. I went to my car and immediately wrote a 2-star Classpass review. Cut to: 5 days later I receive a notification from Classpass that I wasn't in attendance to the Modo class and I was charged a $12 fee. Now, I don't want to be paranoid, but, it seems really convenient that if you list someone as not having been to a class, then they can't leave a review, and April was in charge of checking me in, and not only knew I was in attendance, but knew very well. I call the studio. Peyton agrees to send me an email confirming that there's no way I wasn't in the class, because I had never been and had a profile set up. She said to send it to Classpass and they'd refund me, because Modo has "nothing to do with Classpass." Lol, that's just inaccurate. They allow class attendees from Classpass, but okay, I'll do your work for you. The email Peyton sent me was deeply insulting. I won't even go into it. You can just read it for yourself. I call back an hour later. THANK GOD, CHRIS answers the phone. He sends me a helpful email confirming I was in the class. You can read that as well, it's attached. Anyway, what a mess. read more

I first came to Modo back in 2015 or 2016 and did a trial and loved it! A few years later I finally joined their membership and practiced at the East LA studio and really enjoyed the sense of community there. Once the pandemic hit I sadly had to end my membership but recently joined ClassPass and was so happy to see Modo was on there! I took my first class in 2 years at the La Brea location with Maddie and it was just as great as I remembered. Hot yoga isn't for everyone, but it's always been something I've thoroughly enjoyed. As a more anxiety ridden person, I find this type of flow to really help me be conscious of my breathing which is a reminder I need in my day to day life. I've taken 2 classes of Maddie's and really enjoyed how she led their modo flow. I'm excited to keep coming back and hopefully soon I'll be able to join their membership program again! read more

Based on past reviews, I agree that the customer service here is lacking. I've called ahead of time to mention that I was running 5 mins behind as a courtesy and it's ALWAYS ON VOICEMAIL. Once I arrived at the La Brea studio, they canceled my attendance and said they don't answer phones during check ins. Well, that's not fair. I can't say enough good things about this place. I moved to LA on my own 2 years ago and this place has been there for me through it all. I come here to quiet my mind, heal my body, and cry in peace. Emily has created such a healing sanctuary, and been there for me through the hardest of days! I'll never forget her coming to me in savasana as I cried and she quietly told me "you got this." I needed that more than ever that day. Diane's class is chicken soup for my soul, and feels like a heart and soul massage. She is the best guide to get out of your mind and into your body. Shundreyas pilates and or yoga class is empowering, energizing, and uplifting. I am sure every teacher is amazing, but these are the classes I have tried. :) Modo yoga is truly a spiritual place for the mind body and spirit, so much more than a workout to move your body. read more

If you're going to contract class pass you should learn how the system works. There is no grace period given to people who purchase the class (even if you are 1-3 minutes late). Understandably, I know that policy is policy (although a 1-3 minute grace period would be appreciated). Andre informed me that he could not let me into class and that he was "taking me out" so I would not get charged. When I asked for confirmation of this ( which class pass asks for), he said he could not provide that for me. Going forward if this is a strict policy, you should consider sending customers an email or text when booking through class pass so they are aware of the rules prior to getting there (most studios do this). A "comped" class as a favor for not allowing me into a class that I paid for, that I will now get an extra 17 dollar charge for "missing" is not doing me a favor. Please do your due diligence and inform your customers so they are not wasting their time and money. I will not be coming back here. read more

The experience was unforgettable. I recognize many parts of my body that were less than strength and now know how much strength I need to build. People were graceful and very friendly there. What more can I say about this staple of LA healthy living? I remember getting my free first-month pass when Modo Yoga La Brea first opened more than a decade ago. It was my delicious alternative to Bikram's (oppressive) and Golden Bridge (shutdown). I haven't been a fulltime member the entire time, however, EACH time I come back and visit the studio I am beautifully reminded how cleansing and therapeutic the sessions are for my (inevitably) aging body. You don't realize how important yoga is for your body until you reach your 40's. Ugh! Nevertheless, Modo Yoga is hands-down the best medicine for my body that I have found in LA, and my body never lies to me each time I walk out feeling rejuvinated, limber, and feeling 20 years younger.
