If you've ever worked with contractors, you'll find an entire spectrum of personalities and workmanship. It is always a risk to take that leap of faith, and we're grateful we found Michigan's Best Deck Builders. Our story: Aaron came over to give us an estimate and scope of work. He was incredibly meticulous and methodical with his quote and sketch from the start. He answered all of our questions with confidence and he was very calm (not salesy/pushy). We continued to take several weeks to obtain 5 additional quotes from other deck builders in the area. There are some great ones out there with big names, flashy marketing, and superstar type-A personalities, and competitive "we'll beat any quote" pricing, and they all made us feel very comfortable, no complaints. Here's where Michigan's Best Deck Builders stood out: Aaron runs a tight ship and doesn't outsource his work to a 3rd party team. He was on our job every day and built our deck himself, with his own dedicated crew. There was never a time that he didn't return a text or a phone call within a few hours and was on top of the schedule. We never had to ask or question anything. That said, his quote was not the cheapest, but we unanimously chose him as he was incredibly reliable and the service quality was meticulous from quote to finish. We called ahead and spoke to Parker who kindly pulled step color samples from the yard. This was so helpful as we are matching a competitor stone color to Unilock. Afterwards, we walked through the front parking area which has loads of paver combinations. Helped us see color combinations, textures, and shapes in person versus the catalog. Absolutely worth the two hour round trip drive.

We had our landscaper bring samples to the home to match our brick, and make the final decision. Once Unilock sent their product, we were concerned with the color, stopped the project and were told to deal with Unilock Manufacturer Rep, who advised us that the stone would change colors once exposed to the elements and the initial residue removed. We started the project again on the good faith that Unilock represented. Unfortunately, once the project was done, it was not Desert Sand, even though Manufacturer Rep sent us pictures of other projects using Desert Sand (which did not look like ours at all), and someone came out to see our project and advised us it would change colors in 6 months or so, but would not put that in writing. And at that point, they did not follow up with us even though we were unhappy customers. Their claim is customer satisfaction, but they did absolutely nothing to satisfy us, and we are now left with very very gray pavers, against our orange brick, instead of the beige ones we thought we were getting. #1, #2, and #3 pics are Unilock Desert Sand -- See picture #4 and #5 to see end result of our project.

They wouldn't have this high of a rating - and I definitely wouldn't have hired them if the reviews were a reflection of what it is like to actually work with this company. It's been an over a month and they are still calling me to try to bully me into removing my review. I had to block them. Update 5.24.26 - our deck is peeling and needs to be completely redone. Hiring this company was one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made as a homeowner. They didn't show up when they said they would -- multiple times. Not only did they fail to arrive as promised, they also didn't bother to call and let me know. I rearranged my schedule and even took two full days off work so I could be home for them to complete tasks that required my presence, and they didn't even do the work. That alone shows a complete lack of respect for their customers' time. When they finally did show up, the quality of the work was horrendous. Instead of taking the time to tape off or remove hardware from our deck, they just painted right over it. They left paint on my windows, killed plants, and left overspray on multiple surfaces that should never have been touched. To make matters worse, the product they used on the deck allows the natural knots in the wood to bleed through, leaving the finished result looking blotchy, unfinished, and downright atrocious. I've had to call them back several times to fix sloppy mistakes, yet issues still aren't resolved. Their crews clearly rush, cut corners, and show no pride in their work. Customer service has been dismissive, unprofessional, and completely unwilling to take real responsibility. After all of this, their idea of compensation was a measly $200 credit for the damage and disruption -- an insulting gesture compared to the cost, stress, and time I've lost. This company lacks professionalism, accountability, and basic respect for customers. If you value your time, your property, and your sanity, do yourself a favor and avoid this company at all costs.
