We have had North Solar Shades for 9 years to cover a SW facing wall of glass comprised of 6 panels. The shades we have are battery powered and are no longer in production. This last week we had a motor that was starting to fail. PANIC!! I called North Solar Screen to see if I could track down a new motor and spoke to Carla. No worries, the motors are available on Amazon, the difference is they are rechargeable. Carla sent me the link and after swapping out the flanges to fit my screen, which were included, the installation was simple. Great to have a US company and thanks Carla!! Was expensive but for my situation this is the only thing that would work. And assuming it lasts many years it will be worth the money. All my transactions from 2017 to 2021 with North Solar Screen has been disappointing. I originally bought 3 motorized shades but it came with missing cords, plugs, remote controls, and wrong type of cables. The remote controls weren't programmed in advanced, as advertised, because it was shipped later. I had to reset everything from scratch and there were no instructions from anyone at North Solar Screen. I had to find other sources for assistance and it took me hours. I had hired a professional contractor for the installation and because of the error in missing parts, the contractor had to come twice and it cost extra hours. Then recently in 2021, I had to replace the fabric on the 3 shades. This is no more than shipping properly sized replacements. But in took them over 2 months. First, they double charged the freight until I complained. They never contacted me to keep me updated. I always had to contact them to ask for the status of my order. One of their excuse was "this got marked as read in my email". After repeated calls and emails from me, the package finally arrived. But the fabrics were cut 20 inches short! Once again, my contractor was here with scaffolding ready to install and we were disappointed again. Aside from the terrible services, I found out a major problem is that North Solar Screen are only fast sales people at best. It does not seem like they even have an office. They use a supplier in Arizona named SW Sun Control Shade Systems. I have no dealings with them but I imagine they are part of the problem with all the errors. I would not recommend them to anyone. I wouldn't have gone back to them in 2021 except it was to replace their screens. And now, after spending money and time, I still have the old broken shades. Lesson learned here is to do business with local reputable companies and not companies like North Solar Screen. The explanation from the owner of North Solar Screen is rejected. The owner has never once reached out to me for a resolution. This person has no clue on how much extra money I had to pay my contractors for their mistakes. Nor has she valued the time and headache that they had caused me. She has no perspective from the customer's view. She only cared about making a profit. Even if I had gotten the product at cost (my suggestion), I would have still come out losing due to all my extra costs. Her comment on "remake with accelerated turn around time" is false. An exact email from their sale rep is "I expect we would be able to accommodate you in the late fall". North Solar Screen should also be upfront with all their customers that they are only independent sales representatives instead of pretending to be a complete company. read more

We ordered 3 large motorized blackout blinds in 2014 that we use daily. Someone staying at our house this past week accidentally caused some damage to the guiding wires and caused one of the blinds to begin telescoping (the blinds roll up on one side more than the other so it's tilted). I called North Solar Screen to see if they knew a technician in LA who we could call to fix it. Karen helped me this time and suggested their technical support try helping before I called someone to come here. She connected me with the factory where a gentleman named Ray assisted. He couldn't have been more helpful in walking me through the steps and sending the manual for the remote again. I got it fixed all by myself probably saving a few hundred bucks from calling a local blind company. My wife and I were just talking about how good of a quality these blinds are since we only had this 1 issue (that we caused) in 9 years, and the company still helped us out despite the blinds being way out of warranty. I ordered 2-13' and 2-7' Somfy motorized clear vinyl Baby Grandes for an inside application in 3-season screened porches. Leadtime was 12 weeks from the manufacturer in Arizona. Shades arrived in good shape, packed well in sturdy, custom-made boxes. I did the installation myself which went as expected thanks to good video documentation and personalized help from Carla at North Solar Screen. PROS 1) Excellent customer support from friendly, knowledgeable people. 2) Good documentation, and what wasn't available on the website was provided over the phone. 3) This is a quality product, no cheap materials or surprises in that regard (except what's mentioned below). CONS 1) Tolerances on cutting the vinyl could be better. They quote 1/8" tolerances, but one of the larger shades had a 3/4" difference in width top-bottom, and one of the shorter ones had a 1/2" length difference left-right. On that shade the factory installed a shim to compensate, but put it on the wrong side so, when rolled up, it hung 1" lower on one side than the other. I was supplied with instructions on how to remove and replace the shim so at least it is level when rolled up. 2) Because the material is not held along it's edges, the vinyl curls out, away from the wall surface by, in my case, about 6". They say this is normal, but nothing is mentioned about it so be prepared. 3) The order came with one small can of Plexus vinyl treatment which is required so that the material doesn't stick to itself while rolling. For what I paid, they should have supplied one can per shade, not one can for over 300sf of material which is not nearly enough. I had to order more just to get them operating smoothly, and this stuff is not cheap. SUMMARY This was a major purchase for me. I spent over $8,000 and I think I got the quality I paid for. I went with North Solar because I believed their customer service would be good and they far exceed my expectations on that score. My only suggestion is to get the manufacturer to tighten up their cutting tolerances and/or quality control, and provide online access to documentation to troubleshoot installation problems, adjustments that can be made to the product in the field and how to do them. read more

We initially installed a sun screen about 10 years ago, it worked very well but needs some repair and maintenance by now. We contacted the sales office and spoke with Karen H , a sales associate who was very knowledgable and helpful. Karen located our purchace order, explained patiently the replacement process by pictorial illustration. She worked with the factory to ensure all the necessary replacement parts are mailed to us. It is unbelievable that they found our purchase order and provided excellent customer support in great detail without any cost. They deserve ten stars in today's business world !!! read more

I have high resolution video to proof their screen and remote arrived programmed reverse and now blaming me 3) super rude staff. From their website, I assumed they made the shades. It sure sounds like it. Not true. They are just an internet company the reps shades from different manufacturers. You'll need to do a lot of the work yourself, which I am not able to do. I was told they had access to installers in my area, and they would take care of everything. The shipping cost seemed really high, and it took me 4 calls to get them to admit their was a mistake. They did issue me a credit promptly. They call UPS to get a quote. I did not order casings to be included, they told ups I did which increased the weight of the package. Since they have nothing to do with the production and never see the product, they would never know if anything was wrong unless the customer complains. I knew there was no way it could cost $289 to ship 2 shades. I hired an installer which I found through a third party website they recommended. I paid 85 for him to measure. He said I needed extra boards installed and he wouldn't do that. I got a neighbor to do it. I couldn't figure out why I needed that but he said I did. When he came to install he said they didn't include the screws needed so he left. And, he didn't need the boards after all. He hadn't bothered to look in the box to see what the shades looked like. I called northsolar and they blamed the installer. They said he should have looked at their website to see what he needed. He said they always blame the installer. A case of he said she said. Whatever. I had to pay him another charge to come back. Almost 300 for a job that didn't take long. So long story short, there are too many hands in the pie. If I ever need shades again, I would purchase from a local company who is responsible for everything. If there are mistakes, they will have to deal with it. read more

She seems to forget who she's emailed, called and confuses topics previously discussed. Product over priced, and product tolerances not worth the price paid. Fantastic product, fantastic customer service, fantastic company! My husband and I are trying to cut down on energy costs and keep our home cooler without jacking up the AC this year. Aside from that I was so tired of the old icky cellular shades we had hanging in his office. His office faces west, overlooking our backyard, and gets direct sun. I was on the search for solar shades. Something I had admired in other friends homes, but had no personal experience with. I stumbled upon North Solar Screen, and am so glad I did! I filled out their online form, asking for a few free samples of their products. Wow, was I surprised when the president of the company, Debby Miller, contacted me herself! She sent an email explaining that if my main concern was keeping heat out of the house, I might have chosen samples that might not be as effective as other products her company carried. So she included some of those in the package she was sending. Amazing customer service! (side note: a woman president of a company? YES!) The samples arrived and we looked them over and took a few days to decide upon what would best suit our needs and taste. When I called to order the blinds, again, I was impressed by the level of service I received by the salesperson who took my call. She walked me through the process and explained everything along the way. The blinds arrived, and my husband said they were easy to install. Actually he said he was impressed by the mountings (he's an engineer, so he knows about that stuff). All I know is that they look fantastic, and his office seems cooler in just the few short days we have had them. So impressed by everything about this company! I have mixed emotions. Staff and service were great until the screens were delivered. I had ordered seven motorized screens. They are not as easy to install as one would think. As a builder, I had several skilled tradespeople work on installing. Several screens would not work properly as the zipper would roll over the fabric half way up and then come out of the guides when putting the screens back down. North Solar put me in touch with customer support in Arizona. The rep in Arizona sent me a new screen. Shame on me but I thought as a MA company they had a local service rep. When we could still not get the screens to operate correctly I asked North Solar for someone local that was experienced in installing their product. They said they could not help me, call AZ. I have found someone local that installs powered screens and when they came to look at them they couldn't figure out why the zippers role as well. They called tech support and were told they need new screens. We have now missed a full season and are no closer to getting these screens to work as two of the seven, including the one with a screen already replaced, continue to have rolling zippers and come out of the guides when they are put down. Starting to think the product is defective and my client in their new home is very disappointed. North Solar was fine to deal with at the purchase, but just pointed to AZ when there were issues and I still have no answers. I purchased 10 of their fortress blackout shades for my gazebo that houses an above ground pool. I'm up on a hillside that can get pretty heavy winds. I've had them for a couple years now and I'm still happy with them. They've been amazing for insulating my pool. I'm not spending exorbitant amounts of money keeping it heated in the winter; plus, I can actually use the pool and not freeze my butt off when I get out! They are a bit pricey. I had quite the sticker shock when I first got the quote. To be fair, I couldn't find any other product with the same set of features so I don't have a good comparison quote. Installation was also, interesting. I highly recommend you find a contractor that is experienced with them. Mine was not and I ended up getting heavily involved in getting them to work. Luckily, their customer service was highly responsive and helpful. Overall, I'm very pleased with their product. read more

We had a bad experience with purchasing shades online. The shipping carton failed in shipment and all the hardware and installation instructions were lost and one shade damaged. North Solar blamed the shipper, but we found the packaging grossly inadequate for the value (more than $900) and fragility of the order. The shades were packed tightly together with no wrapping or cushioning between the shades. There was no inner packing material between the shades and the outer single-walled cardboard triangular tube. The only remedy North Solar offered was for us to purchase the hardware again from them. We were shocked that the packaging was so poor and disappointed that North Solar did not offer to replace the hardware as a courtesy or at least let us buy it at cost. read more

I can't say enough great things about my experience with North Solar Screen and their staff. We knew nothing about shades. I only knew that our house and patio were ridiculously hot and I couldn't deal with another year of it. These people truly know their products. After listening to my tales of woe, they took incredible time and patience to explain the appropriate shading systems that would work for me and why. They asked me to send pictures of where I wanted to put the shades so they could better help me. They sent informative brochures of the various shade types with nice samples to test. We did not purchase everything they recommended at once. Truthfully we were cautious about the internet and wanted to make sure we didn't run into any problems. I am happy to report we just had our third and final batch installed and once again it all went great. My husband is not handy. We used the Find A Pro page on their website to find an installer in our area. They reminded us that those installers are bonded and insured but not employees of theirs so we followed their directions and had the installer look at their website and installation videos so he knew what the job was going to entail,especially for the outdoor shades. They told us they also have a tech advisor who could help him if he ran into snags on the job. We ordered a specialized unit for our kitchen slider. The installer did have some questions. Within five minutes they sent a video to his phone so he was able to complete the install without a hitch. I would recommend this company in a heartbeat to anyone. We have already had some real hot days and the difference in temperature in my home is real. We have also finally been able to use our patio at dinner time without wearing sunglasses and sucking on ice cubes to cool off. read more
